WWDC 2008 AKA The Day the Earth Stood Still
2008-06-10 00:47:00
The title of this post is somewhat overblown and pretentious! It's not entirely without some merit as an in-joke; Twitter has been electric with, witty, sci-fi references regarding announcements beamed from the Apple mothership, I only needed to mention that Exeter was thundery and my Twitter peeps were inspired to alude to ID4 amongst others. My initial reaction to Steve Jobs keynote is mostly positive, mostly! The new iPhone 3G looks most compelling. I'm sold on the 16GB model (in limited edition white) and will be contacting my O2 Shop in short order: as soon as tomorrow. Assuming O2 can offer a good pay-as-you-go plan, alongside the £269 price tag, for an iPhone 3G, July 11th can't come soon enough and an iPod touch purchase is redundant..mac is to morph into MobileMe and e-mail addresses can be transferred, if desired, to @me.com. However, a free service would've been welcomed! Apple's e-mail solution looks like a poor investment against highly featured, and free, services ...

2008-06-06 21:21:00
The halo of geek chic is in full effect and WWDC enjoys a public profile comparable to Macworld! The buzz surrounding next week's WWDC 2008 is bordering on the feverish! Only a brand with Apple's mindshare could garner such frenetic excitement, from the mainstream mass media, for what is, arguably, exclusively a 'developers delight'!Not only is there incessant talk of the iPhone 2/3G, there's Mac OS X 10.5.4 (didn't we all just download 10.5.3 last week?), Mac OS X 10.6 codenamed 'Snow Leopard', and a much-needed .mac makeover. The latter holds the most compelling secrets and may convince me to renew my subscription in October!Everything hinges on the iPhone 2 and whether or not O2, the exclusive UK network carrier, offers Apple's second generation mobile device at a compelling price point alongside pay-as-you-go deals! If so, I'm sold and it'll be goodbye Orange! Readers who watch Channel Four's Dispatches series will appreciate the pay-as-you-go bias!Further to the iPh...

Apple Discussions has been flooded with myriad reports of iCal problems following last week's release of Mac OS X 10.5.3! I can concur that the latest update wiped all my iCal calendars after a .mac sync!Thankfully I had a usable backup from which to restore all my calendars! This is my suggested workaround:*Uncheck iCal sync (System Preferences/.mac)*Delete this folder: ~/Library/Calendars*Restore all iCal settings via your backup planHey presto! A working copy of iCal. Your mileage may vary, but I hope that this simple tip will help some (if not all) affected users. Further to this, I'm seriously considering purchasing Time Capsule 1TB at the conclusion of WWDC08!

2008-05-28 23:29:00

Talking Twitter, The Double and Princesshay nail bomb
2008-05-22 23:42:00
This past week much has been made of Twitter 's recurring service outages! Clearly Twitter is suffering scaling issues, escalated, in no small part, by mainstream media conglomerates adopting Twitter as part of their online channel offerings. In a somewhat reactionary move, some self-appointed 'opinion leaders', on Twitter, were calling for a boycott of the young service yesterday - prophetically dubbed - Twit-Out!I chose to boycott the boycott! Ironically, Twitter, itself, was 'out of it' for a while; although I doubt that this was intended to express solidarity for Twit-Out. I was aggrieved due to my unabridged delight at Manchester United securing The Double against Chelsea FC, whom I'm loathe to ever like, under dramatic circumstances! On a most serious note. This afternoon, Twitter, yet again, proved its intrinsic value with regards 'breaking news', when a nail bomb exploded at Exeter's Princesshay Shopping Centre! I had, literally, only driven by Princesshay minutes pr...

Twitter adores ASUS Eee PC
2008-05-14 23:02:00
Last night (GMT) Twitter was awash with excitement regarding the award-winning ASUS Eee PC range of portables! Of particular note was the all-new Eee PC 900; the latest weapon of choice for discerning bloggers-on-the-go everywhere (and that includes Mac Users too)!A few weeks ago The Gadget Show, shown on five (a UK-based commercial television network), tested the Apple MacBook Air, Sony VAIO TZ31 and ASUS Eee PC, to ascertain which product offered the best value for money in terms of both ease of use and wireless blogging for all members of the family.Inevitably the MacBook Air achieved merit for its eye-catching beauty and build quality. The ASUS Eee PC was victorious due to its multimedia flexibility (an aspect woefully overlooked in the MacBook Air), ease of use and compelling price point! What blogging-on-the-go consumer would bemoan £200+ against a bank-breaking £1000+ for either the MacBook Air or Sony VAIO TZ31? Unless you need to undertake any heavy lifting...I've yet to p...

Candy Girl
2008-05-07 22:36:00
I have to profess that Hard Candy is my favourite Madonna album since Ray of Light (1998)! That said, she's pretty much guest starring on cool cuts produced by Timbaland, Neptunes and friends! At times Madonna sounds like Timbaland muse Nelly Furtado and one-time rival Paula Abdul on Candy Shop!Hard Candy is more a sequel to Justin Timberlake's awesome Future Sex / Love Sounds, which, in my view, is a good thing, even if it doesn't push the envelope and Madonna is a trend follower in this instance! Is Hard Candy as good as Mariah Carey's blockbuster E=MC²? I'd suggest not!

Switching Sony for Onkyo!
2008-05-04 13:21:00
A few weeks ago I was perusing the What Hi-Fi? forums to ascertain whether or not the Onkyo TX-SR605 was still available and if there were any bargains to be had?At a mouthwatering £399, the TX-SR605 garnered What Hi-Fi's most coveted Product of the Year 2007 award, and I sorely needed to replace my ageing Sony STR-DB910 A/V receiver, that had served me well for 8 years; a testament to the build quality of Sony's QS brand. Coincidentally Onkyo announced its 2008 product line, which includes the TX-SR605's replacement! The TX-SR606 at £399!The TX-SR606 builds on the award-winning success of its sibling and, unsurprisingly, Onkyo's latest marvel has received 5 stars in What Hi-Fi's online review. That's 5 stars with caveats! The Onkyo TX-SR606 isn't the most attractive, nor musical, multichannel receiver on the market. That said, it would be most churlish not to look beyond its functional exterior, especially as the Onkyo TX-SR606 boasts features only reserved for multichannel ...

E=MC² is a formula for single success
2008-04-19 19:48:00
The sequel to Mariah Carey's multi-platinum album The Emancipation of Mimi, E=MC², may become the diva's most successful release to date!Mariah Carey's 11th studio album is front-loaded with a dazzling array of potential singles and not at the expense of musical integrity! Following the coy Touch My Body, I'm That Chick is a cool cut that borrows heavily from '70s disco and even goes as far as directly quoting from the zenith of the era - Michael Jackson's celebrated Off The Wall album! Mariah's introspective dissertation on her failed marriage to Tommy Mottola, Side Effects, is another standout and evokes the paranoia of Michael Jackson's best material! For the Record is mesmeric, replete with Mariah's trademark vocal pyrotechnics.E=MC² closes with I Wish You Well. With its haunting gospel overtones, the song sounds incongruous against what has proceeded it! That said, it's a beautiful and rare opportunity to hear Mariah Carey's voice emote a cappella.I've been a fan of...
