The move comes as the government is concerned about the unconventional means of advertising adopted by companies who lure customers into buying consumer goods, pharmaceutical and healthcare products and other services which are neither registered with any government authority, nor are they tested in any national or consumer run labs. Besides, many products advertised through SMSs and emails have no approvals for sale. No Indian rice, groundnuts in Russia
2007-06-06 23:10:00 Russia on Tuesday banned imports of rice, groundnuts and sesame seeds originating from India citing poor quality of its produce. "Actual ban was in force from May 1, but import was allowed on the basis of earlier issued certificates. Now a complete ban has come into force as Indian authorities have failed to take proper (quality) control measures," Interfax reported, quoting agriculture watchdog 'Rosselkhoznadzor'. Earlier, Moscow had claimed to have found several consignments of Indian rice, groundnuts and sesame seeds contaminated with pests. In January, it had intercepted 54 tons of Indian groundnut infested with pests dangerous for grain crops. In March, pests were found in 125 tons of rice imported from India, while a month earlier a consignment of sesame seeds contaminated with fungus, alpha toxin B1 and metallic impurities was stopped by Rosselkhoznadzor. The federal government suit, filed on Monday, says the children suffered various degrees of adverse effects ranging from deafness to muteness, paralysis, brain damage, loss of sight, slurred speech, while 11 died. The federal action follows a similar suit filed last month by Kano, Nigeria's largest state, which is seeking USD 2.75 billion from the pharmaceutical giant. Both lawsuits centre around the events of April 1996, when the World Health Organization (WHO) and Pfizer volunteered to help in Kano following an outbreak of measles, cholera and meningitis that killed more than 3,000 people. The hub would give the airline access to the entire Europe, besides allowing services to North America. It would focus not only on connecting Indian passengers, but also carry traffic fed by Brussels Airlines from Europe and Africa for onward journey to the US and Canada. Jet Airways has got ten pairs of slots at the Brussels airport, which is handling only about half of its capacity of over 30 million passengers annually.
