TAR 12.8: Nathan and Jennifer
2008-01-05 19:50:00
Athletic daters Nathan and Jennifer ran an absolutely woeful eighth leg of "The Amazing Race 12," mired in at least two major arguments. Only Kynt and Vyxsin's own mistakes and preexisting time delay allowed Nathan and Jennifer to escape the eighth leg intact. The daters went at each other in the not fun way twice, arguing with each other over how to search through the newspaper for their clue and over the flower garland threading Detour. Nathan was upset at Jennifer's lack of knowledge on how to do the task while Jennifer was still holding Nathan's previous lack of rowing expertise back at him.A principal problem with Nathan and Jennifer seems to be that they are so driven that they can't willingly accept imperfections in each other. Of course, the fact that their judgments are also hopelessly colored by gender role identity issues doesn't help other. It shouldn't be expected that Nathan would know how to row simply because he's a man or on this leg, that Jennifer would be a...
TAR 12.8: TK and Rachel
2008-01-05 19:13:00
After a shaky beginning, the serene daters TK and Rachel had arguably their best leg of "The Amazing Race 12" to date to claim their second leg win of the series. TK and Rachel were initially behind the eight-ball, left waiting at the airport to make reservations from Flornece, Italy to Mumbai, India. While it isn't clear if the pair was actually fooled by Kynt and Vyxsin's self-described "performance art" stunt, what does seem clear is that the pair didn't match the aggressiveness of the other teams in seeking out alternative flight tickets, settling too quickly for the 1 a.m. arrival.----Fortunately, the arrival delay in Mumbai was equalized out, allowing the team to regain equal footing. The daters found the newspaper ad clue in the middle of the pack but Rachel's experience with floral garlands lifted her team up the standings on the Detour. The infighting that plagued the Nathan/Jennifer and Ronald/Christina teams would obviously not become an issue here.TK then subsequentl...

TAR 12 , LEG 8 DEPARTURE TIMES1) Nicolas & Donald (10:12 p.m.)2) Nathan & Jennifer (11:55 p.m., 1:43 behind the top team)3) Ronald & Christina (1:06 a.m., 2:54)4) TK & Rachel (2:11 a.m., 3:59)5) Kynt & Vyxsin (3:23 a.m., 5:11)ITALYThe five remaining teams on "The Amazing Race 12" opened up the eighth leg from Florence, Italy, discovering that they would need to travel to Mumbai, India (formerly known as Bombay). Grandson/grandfather leaders Nicolas & Donald made Internet reservations for an Air France flight the next day through Paris to arrive at 10:35 p.m. Ronald & Christina reserved for the same flight by phone. Other teams thought to buy tickets at the airport only to discover that it was closed for the night. At sunup, daters Nathan and Jennifer reserved tickets for the same Air France flight. TK and Rachel stepped up to the counter only to discover that said flight was now full. Kynt and Vyxsin went off on their own for a Northwest Airlines tickets through Amsterdam set to arriv...

"Survivor" new vs. returning players named
2008-01-04 04:41:00
Here's a quick blast from the past... the results of a poll created May 7, 2007 after the final airing of "The Amazing Race: All-Stars."TARBloob pollIn the long-term, how should former racers be used on any future runs of "The Amazing Race"?More teams should be returned for an eventual 2nd "All-Stars" run. (5)23%Teams from the past should be matched to compete against new teams. (7)32%Former racers should be used only in non-racing roles. (4)18%Not at all. Only new racers should ever be shown on the series. (6)27%Total Votes: 22 Why do I mention this very old poll declaring a preference for an eventual hybrid TAR competition? It's because producers of a certain CBS reality series were actually inspired for unrelated reasons to create such a hybrid edition with new and returning competitors matched against each other. Unfortunately, that CBS reality series was "Survivor ."Last month's postshow finale of "Survivor: China" revealed word about the existence of an upcoming hybrid for...

If the scheduled playoff football game runs long, TAR12 could be delayed still further. The schedule remains unchanged across all of Canada and the western time zones (Mountain, Pacific et al) of the United States. TAR will begin as usual at 8 p.m. Pacific Standard Time and 7 p.m. Mountain Standard Time in the contiguous western U.S.

TAR12's 8th episode scores top 10 ratings
2008-01-03 22:14:00
Despite lower than usual Nielsen ratings, the eighth episode of "The Amazing Race 12" scored among the top ten shows for the holiday week by all significant measurements! The Nielsen ratings for episode eight, according to CBS, are as follows:9.7 million overall viewers --- 9th place for the week3.7 rating in the 25-54 age group --- 6th place for the week2.9 rating in the 18-49 age group --- 8th place for the weekThe 2.9 rating in the 18-49 age group is a slight increase over the pre-Christmas episode's 2.8 mark. The 9.7 million viewers registered a more significant increase over the pre-Christmas episode's 9.0 million viewership. While these ratings are still lower than the season average, the lack of original content elsewhere helped "The Amazing Race 12" surpass all but a few programs for the holiday week anyway. Mitigating factors notwithstanding, "The Amazing Race" should be congratulated for its accomplishment.

Eighth episode TAR12 ratings continue in holiday funk
2007-12-31 18:56:00
The offhour football overrun again made getting any kind of exact preliminary ratings impossible but the inexact Nielsen ratings for "The Amazing Race 12" are roughly in the same lower range as the previous week. The 9 p.m. ET half hour (the only one not contaminated by readings from other shows) showed a 2.7 demo rating among age 18-49 viewers and an average 9.6 million viewers.I had thought that the New Years weekend would have been at least a little more advantageous for the show than the Christmas weekend. Apparently not. The obvious holiday audience combined with reruns surrounding TAR on both sides may have again dragged down the ratings numbers. Relevant link: PIfeedback.com

Next week's TAR (mostly) delayed by playoff football
2007-12-31 14:58:00
Updated television listings have the "The Amazing Race 12" unofficially set to start at 8:30 p.m. EST/7:30 p.m. CST on CBS next week, a half hour later than normal. A late NFL playoff game (Tennessee at San Diego) will delay "60 Minutes" and "The Amazing Race" in turn next week. If the game runs long, TAR's start time could be delayed still further. The original plan for next Sunday had been for "60 Minutes" to be preempted after playoff football to allow remaining CBS programs to start on time. However, "60 Minutes" was instead reinserted into the January 6 lineup after scoring an interview with embattled baseball pitcher Roger Clemens.----As of this point, "The Amazing Race 12" should still start at its regular time for viewers in the Pacific, Mountain, Alaskan and Hawaiian time zones of the United States. CTV will air the late playoff game football but its schedules still reflect its usual 8 p.m. Eastern start time for the ninth episode of TAR, with no buffer program between play...

TAR 12.8 recaplette, Kynt & Vyxsin eliminated
2007-12-31 04:10:00
Dating goths Kynt and Vyxsin faced the key question of whether they would be able to overcome the extra "speed bump" task to survive on "The Amazing Race 12." The team gave a noble effort but tactical errors combined with the speed bump to lead to its exit from the race. The first clue on this eighth episode of TAR12 directed teams to fly from Florence, Italy to Mumbai, India. Most teams booked tickets from Air France, Kynt & Vyxsin alternatively booked a flight set to arrive minutes later while TK & Rachel settled for a flight hours behind the pack. All the machinations would prove irrelevant though as their next destination of a newspaper stand would not open till the next day, equalizing the field.Teams were directed to look through advertisements in the Times of India newspaper for their next clue, to take an auto-rickshaw to the nearby Chauhan tailors. Most other teams found the clue in short order but Nathan and Jennifer's frustration at failing to find the ad resorted in more...

Rating adjusted upward for TAR 12.2
2007-11-14 03:23:00
The final same-day Nielsen demo rating for the second episode of "The Amazing Race 12" was adjusted upward to a 3.2 mark (from 3.1) among age 18-49 viewers. The number is still down from last week's football-inflated 4.3 rating but stands as a credible rating for the program. The adjusted result also more clearly showcases "The Amazing Race 12" as the top CBS Sunday night series among key viewers, scoring its 3.2 versus the 2.9 the following hour for "Cold Case." The preliminary estimates had shown TAR12 with only a 3.1 to 3.0 advantage.TAR 12 .2 reached an overall audience of 10.5 million viewers for the network.Relevant link: PIFeedback.com

TAR12 ratings downturn to normal levels
2007-11-12 21:18:00
Fast national Nielsen ratings were decidedly more mixed for the second episode of "The Amazing Race 12 " as the show was unable to sustain the strong ratings of its season premiere. This week's airing hit a preliminary 3.1 Nielsen demo rating in the 18-49 age group, well down from last week's football-inflated 4.2 but still notable as the top CBS mark for the night. The show's overall audience level was down to a preliminary 10.5 million, well off from last week's record setting season premiere.----One wishes that the TAR12 episode had been able to retain more of its large debut audience. It is somewhat disappointing that the 2nd episode ratings came in closer to TAR: All-Stars levels than last fall's higher rated TAR10.TAR's ratings decreased in a year to year comparsion by about 5 to 10%, not great news but a fair dropoff in comparison to many other programs that have dropped by larger percentages. In that context, the numbers that came in were still likely on the positive sid...

TAR 12.2 recaplette: Kate & Pat eliminated
2007-11-12 03:19:00
One team's relationship took a surprisingly positive turn this 2nd episode of TAR12 episode while another one went stunningly negative for a time. The second leg of "The Amazing Race 12" split teams into two tiers for most of its run. The majority of teams made the top flight from Shannon, Irelanbd to Amsterdam without incident. Three teams (Marianna/Julia, Ronald/Christina & Kate /Pat) were left waiting for later connections. Marianna and Julia missed the first flight from Shannon altogether after taking an elongated drive to the airport, an error that could have proven fatal in other circumstance.----At the top, siblings Azaria and Hendekea reestablished their lead in Amsterdam but made a strategic error in their Detour choice. The siblings chose the "hunt it" task of looking for matching color patterns among a multitude of bikes then biking 5 miles. Other teams chose the "hoist it" task of tying and lifting furniture by pulley to an upstairs apartment room. Hoisting clearly seemed...

TAR12 resumes for second episode
2007-11-11 19:51:00
"The Amazing Race 12" resumes tonight for its second episode and second European leg, hopefully with enough juice to sustain the momentum from last Sunday's successful season debut. The key will be if the many people who saw last week's first outing have been convinced to return as regular viewers. With best friends Ari and Staella out of the picture, the second episode may give another TAR12 team the chance to step into the so-called villain/heel role. We'll also ee if either one of the veteran dating teams can recover their full bearings long enough to make a better go of the second leg. Tonight's start time is a regularly scheduled 8 p.m. EST/PST on CBS & CTV.

No confirmation of TAR13 renewal report
2007-11-11 15:12:00
Several days after the original USA Today, no other news sources have independently confirmed the renewal of "The Amazing Race" for run #13. It just seems doubtful that the word would come out as a throwaway in the last paragraph of a USA Today strike story with no other word from any other mainstream source. If someone put a gun to a head (please don't do that), I'd state that we will likely get a "The Amazing Race 13" renewal, eventually. From most indications though, that renewal hasn't actually occurred just yet. The application process search for TAR13, in the event that it does take place, is ongoing for most of this month.

CBS adds Race-based Facebook site
2007-11-11 14:52:00
In another positive sign for the future of the program, CBS is now utilizing social networking site Facebook to "develop an online community" for "The Amazing Race ." Just my personal opinion but Facebook seems an infinitely superior platform to MySpace nowadays, especially considering that MySpace is tied by its parent company to a rival broadcasting network. CBS is wise to embrace the Facebook alternative.Excerpts from the press release (via Futon Critic) are below:CBS today announced it is utilizing Facebook Ads to tap into an online community of "The Amazing Race" fans while attracting new viewers through targeted outreach, word-of-mouth referrals, and viral campaigns aimed at enabling fans to introduce the show to their friends, and their friends' friends. The building of the online community around "The Amazing Race" will be done via a "The Amazing Race" Facebook Page which will include interactive content tied to the program. The launch of "The Amazing Race" Facebook Page com...

TAR 12.1: Marianna & Julia
2007-11-11 00:49:00
While the sisters Maria nna and Julia did not have a real chance to use the sex appeal factor in their racing favor, their vaunted male-style aggressiveness was in effect in full force. That aggressiveness could prove to be their best racing trait. What seems to be interesting with Marianna and Julia early on is that while they've been led astray by other teams, the sisters have allowed other teams to ask directions then made the quickest on the course adjustments to jump ahead of the teams asking for directions in the first place. The sisters were the only pair to recover from that wrong turn down Sunset Boulevard and make the first flight out of LAX ahead of Azaria and Hendekea. The flights flipped flopped in order but that didn't stop the sisters from then aggressively moving out ahead of other teams seeking a cab at Shannon Airport.Their wrong way pedestrian sojourn (off bad directions) following Ronald and Christina to Teampall Bheanain knocked them onto the last ferry of racer...

TAR 12.1: Ronald and Christina
2007-11-11 00:26:00
As might have been expected, the father/daughter Ronald and Christina team is pulling straight for the heartstrings of TAR viewers. Ronald spent much of his working life away on business trips and now seeks to reconnect with his grown daughter Christina. For whatever problems any extended real-life absences may have caused in their earlier lives, the problems have not extended to the show.Surprisingly, the Washingtonians (state or city, take your pick) didn't have problems navigating to LAX airport itself but instead got lost getting bad directions while en route to the airport Park N Ride. The same problem hit later en route to the Teampall Bheanain church as another bum source led them astray. Hopefully, the father and daughter will get to learn which sources of info are more credible than other ones or just invest in better maps. Such incredibly bad luck knocked the team down into the lower tier, a risky proposition on other potential legs. On this leg though, a good donkey and ...

TAR 12.1: Nicolas and Donald
2007-11-10 23:59:00
The grandson/grandfather team Nico las and Donald had a mixed bag of an outing, a decent impression in terms of personality but clear difficulties in coping with the initial physicality of "The Amazing Race 12."Whether by a bizarre fluke or purposeful design, Nicolas and Donald actually ended up being the top team to leave the TAR12 starting site of Los Angeles' Playboy Mansion. Unfortunately, the team just as quickly lost its lead on the wrong way out on Sunset Boulevard. What is to the team's credit is that Nicolas and Donald were the team that first stopped to ask directions and correct their error. What was a problem here and could be a recurring one is the fact that they will always be at a physical disadvantage. The pair can't simply run out to meet a shuttle bus without missing the ride. or to a ferry sign-up sheet without the risk of a physical tripup. Donald's age is an unavoidable fact of life. The grandfather clearly has the fight and the fight words to push the race t...

TAR 12.1: Kynt and Vyxsin
2007-11-10 23:35:00
The goth daters Kynt and Vyxsin make a weird impression by their own purposeful design but for the first leg of "The Amazing Race 12," they made an initially successful impression. The Louisville, Kentucky pair's unfamiliarity with the Los Angeles area quickly put them on the wrong path down Sunset Boulevard and on the latter flight out. Thankfully, Kynt and Vyxsin will not have to cope with such home disadvantages in any subsequent countries. When on more equal terms with the other teams, the goths gravitated towards the top tier, making the top ferry in third place and eventually scoring a second place finish behind the surging Azaria and Hendekea. This team doesn't have the over the top athleticism of such others but does have the quality of persistence in abundance. An obvious concern for Kynt and Vyxsin would be whether their Goth lifestyle/look would isolate them from other teams. On leg one, it didn't impend them. Let's hope for the same in the upcoming legs.

TAR 12.1: TK and Rachel
2007-11-10 23:19:00
Whether or not they actually did win on the initial leg of the race, new daters TK and Rachel get my initial credit for avoiding the hysterics of some of the other dating competitors. The newest team to be labeled as "hippies" rode their more laid-back personalities successfully to a third place finish. To be sure, their initial start was not a good one as the pair misnavigated their wrong way out on Sunset Boulevard, missing the first flight out to Ireland in the process. With that disadvantage quickly nullified though, the daters raced most of the remainder of the leg at or near the lead. TK and Rachel took the lead upon leaving the top tier ferry after Lorena and Jason drover the wrong way to Cleggan Farm, then maintained the lead until getting lost themselves en route to the Pit Stop. Unlike Lorena and Jason though, TK and Rachel quickly recovered from their mistaken turn without any drama and followed the other teams into third place. The pair's clear advantage is that they shar...

TAR 12.1: Azaria and Hendekea
2007-11-10 22:55:00
In the very early going, siblings Azaria and Hendekea have come out as a strong fan favorite, a blessed team and well-deserved champions of the first leg. For a very brief time, the engineers held an early advantage out of the Playboy Mansion parking lot but lost it taking a wrong turn en route to LAX. The result was being nudged out of the first flight out to Ireland, what could have been a fatal error had it occurred in another race leg. Thankfully for the sibs though, the error didn't hurt them and gave them the opportunity to forge ties with father/daughter team Ronald & Christina. The calling ahead for taxis for both teams was a smart plan for a team just starting out on the race. The siblings raced midpack for a time but avoided the errors of other teams. The pair excelled on the athleticism of the tandem bike. Azaria and Hendekea were lucky enough to draw a hyperactive donkey but athletic enough again to keep up with it. Their initial prize though was based on Hendekea rememb...

TAR 12.1: Shana and Jennifer
2007-11-10 22:35:00
Surprisingly, the so-called fickle "L.A. Blondes" Shana and Jennifer team didn't have all that much to do (that we could see at least) on the first episode of "The Amazing Race 12" until its latter minutes. After a strong start negotiating the Los Angeles road and airport system to reach the LAX airport ticket counter in second place, the team never reached such heights for the remainder of the race leg. It wasn't crystal clear from the edit what problems the pair had on day one that dropped them down the pack but there was a brief reference to the team getting lost and needing directions on their second day in Ireland. Heading into the "donkey walk" task, the blondes had dropped down all the way to last place. At that point, fortune smiled down on Shana and Jennifer as a hyperactive donkey allowed Shana and Jennifer to pass five other teams and finish leg one in the middle of the TAR12 field. Drawing such a donkey was clearly lucky but the friends get some credit for being able to...

TAR 12.1: Lorena and Jason
2007-11-10 21:11:00
Daters Loren a and Jason had an up and down opening for their stint on "The Amazing Race 12," briefly holding the lead at times but also falling victim to their own inner disconnect on one key stint of the race. To their credit, the daters took advantage of their home knowledge of the Los Angeles area road system to be the first team to successfully navigate out to LAX airport. That advantage would prove short-lived for reasons beyond their control. Lorena and Jason would also later lead the pack of racers at Inis Mor, Ireland and maintain that advantage to sign up for the first of the next day ferries. It was the team members' own disconnect from each other though that would prove harmful to the team. Rather than go ahead with the agreed upon plan to cooperate with the other top tier racers to Cleggan Farm, Jason instead inadvertently lost the other teams and proceeded to continue driving in the wrong direction, despite pleadings from Lorena to stop and turn around. Jason had to la...

TAR 12.1: Nathan and Jennifer
2007-11-10 20:42:00
One can determine that daters Nathan and Jennifer ? are deep into the athletic culture when Jennifer makes a reference to her boyfriend's knowledge of her poor "long-distance sprinting" ability. The fact that either one of them would even know, much less be familiar with such an obscure athletic subdiscipline is jarring. Aside from that "long-distance sprinting" thing, Nathan and Jennifer did surely excell on the athletic aspects of the program, passing the Ari/Staella team on the tandem bike and the Kynt/Vyxsin team on the roadblock. What may be more jarring than the athleticism though is Nathan's lack of awareness that the "The Amazing Race" is as much a relationship test as an athletic test. Nathan's tantrum at Jennifer's struggles en route to Teampall Bheanain hit an obvious sore point. I'm no expert but even I know that a man who cheated on his girlfriend should never try to compare said girlfriend unfavorably to other women... in any aspect.Their collective loss of composu...
"Amazing Race" reported renewed for 13th run
2007-11-08 21:52:00
USA Today reported in today's editions that CBS has renewed "The Amazing Race " for a 13th run. The reported renewal news came in the last paragraph of an article about the effects of the ongoing writers' strike. What's strange about the USA Today reference to a TAR renewal is that hours later, I can't find any collaborating accounts from either major trade publication (Variety, The Hollywood Reporter) or from CBS itself to verify it. Even without the USA Today report, the combination of the impressive audience level for TAR12's debut with the likelihood of a long writers' strike have made a TAR13 run much more likely than not. It's just the official word that seems in doubt for the moment.
