CBS confirms two TAR cycles in 2008-09 season
2008-05-14 18:10:00
CBS executives confirmed on the record today that two different cycles/runs of "The Amazing Race" will air during the 2008 -2009 television season. The confirmation (reported by TV Week) occurred as part of a Q&A during the yearly upfront presentation to advertisers. As already announced, "The Amazing Race 13" will air this fall 2008 in the Sunday 8 p.m. ET slot. "The Amazing Race 14" will air this winter to spring 2009, likely (though not officially) in the same timeslot. Two cycles of the series (TAR10 & TAR11) aired Sundays during the 2006-2007 television season. Because of the "Viva Laughlin" fiasco, only one cycle (TAR12) aired during the now concluding 2007-2008 television season. Considering how destructive the writers' strike was to CBS' ratings book, the network really could have used an additional run.----Relevant link: TV Week

"The Amazing Race 13" kept in Sunday slot for fall 2008
2008-05-14 15:31:00
"The Amazing Race 13" has been officially set to air this fall 2008 in its usual Sunday 8 p.m. ET/PT timeslot. After learning from last year's "Viva Laughlin" fiasco, CBS officially slotted TAR without further delay for a regular fall debut. As usual, the program will be subject to delays resulting from extended National Football League overruns. In large measure because of the football overruns, "The Amazing Race " has found a comfortable home in the Sunday 8 p.m. slot. The past two editions of TAR that have benefited from football overruns (TAR10 & TAR12) have each scored more than acceptable ratings. The other CBS Sunday slots will be unchanged with one exception. "60 Minutes" will remain at 7 p.m. as TAR's lead-in, fellow Jerry Bruckheimer-program "Cold Case" returns to be TAR's lead-out at 9 p.m. The exception was legal drama "Shark", cancelled and replaced in the 10 p.m. ET time slot by veteran military-based drama "The Unit." ----Relevant link: CBS Press Express

"The Amazing Race" renewed for 14th season!
2008-05-13 22:08:00
"The Amazing Race 14" is a GO!!!TV Week reports that "The Amazing Race " has been officially renewed for a 14th edition of the series. The renewal guarantees at least two more TAR runs including the one now wrapping up production, both likely to air during the 2008-2009 television season. The ordering of TAR14 now means that "The Amazing Race 13" will likely not be delayed to midseason as speculated elsewhere but should instead air on time during fall 2008. "The Amazing Race 14" should then follow in quick order for airing in winter/spring 2009.Casting for "The Amazing Race 14" had already started several weeks ago on CBS.com in anticipation of the expected extra run of the program but the official confirmation of run #14 only came down today. Congratulations to the "The Amazing Race" go out from TARBloob again for yet another deserved renewal.----Relevant link: TV Week

"Oprah's Big Give" cancelled by Oprah
2008-05-13 21:37:00
When this blog went on unplanned hiatus, ABC reality charity competition series "Oprah 's Big Give " was readying to premiere. As of today for TARbloob's return, "Oprah's Big Give" is officially dead.ABC officially cancelled "Oprah's Big Give" today but the impetus of its demise was from Oprah Winfrey herself. ABC president Steve McPherson stated at the netowrk's upfront presentation to advertisers that Winfrey simply did not want to be involved with another edition of the program. ----"The Amazing Race" co-creators Bertram van Munster and Elise Doganieri had been brought into the show development early on to help craft a hybrid between the reality competition format and Oprah Winfrey's sense of personal charity. The fusion proved difficult though with reviews for the program decidedly mixed. Controversy also attached itself with a lawsuit from a Boston woman who claimed original ownership of the series concept.Nielsen ratings for the show were not great past the first few episo...
ABC fall 2008 schedule
2008-05-13 20:55:00
Aside from the unexpected cancellation of "Oprah's Big Give" which would have been renewed had Oprah allowed it, reality programs faired well in the new ABC fall schedule. Returnees "Dancing With the Stars," "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," "America's Funniest Home Videos," "Wife Swap" and "Supernanny" all made the fall lineup along with new game/reality hybrid "Opportunity Knocks" from Ashton Kutcher."The Bachelor" won't air this fall but will be back in winter/spring 2009. The fates of "Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann" and "Here Come the Newlyweds" remain undetermined. Welcome to the new TARbloob
2008-05-05 02:51:00
Where to begin? No, your friendly neighborhood webmaster is neither dead nor stuck perennially awaiting the long ago premiere episode of "Oprah's Big Give." And I certainly have NOT been a secret racer on the taping "The Amazing Race 13," as great as that would have been. (Seriously, I'd love to do an ongoing blog while doing a TAR race, hint, hint.)The simple and far less dramatic reality is that the frustrations of trying to get posts up on this blog while under home time constraints and a blogging system gone perennially wrong caused me to take a step back. So while "The Amazing Race" dove into the longest scheduling hiatus in known memory, I concentrated what free time of my own still existed on developing new features for my other blogs. It was always my hope to be back here on TARbloob at some point when things could get rolling more fully again. Now we are, where we are. While "The Amazing Race" remains on an official hiatus awaiting its next scheduled airing, this blog ret...
"Oprah's Big Give" premieres charity as competition
2008-03-02 22:41:00
"Oprah's Big Give " (9 p.m. ET/PT, ABC), the most dramatic attempt ever at crossbreeding the nobility of charity with the intensity of a reality competition, premieres this Sunday night. The project is notable here in that Oprah Winfrey brought "The Amazing Race" co-creators Bertram van Munster and Elise Doganieri on board to help develop and produce the series. The show concept is that Oprah Winfrey will give the competitors money, not to use for themselves but to help people in need. Competitors who are judged to have done the most "good" (however the judges define that) with the money will advance to future episodes, the competitors who were not so effective in their good works will be eliminated. ----The main concern over the show which has plagued television critics and may plague potential fans is the clash between the inherently unselfish nature of the charitable work and the inherently self-centered nature of the reality competition. The two facets of the program would not se...

Emmys may add reality host award category
2008-02-28 02:21:00
The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences is expected to a category for outstanding reality show host, according to a report in Variety. While "The Amazing Race" has won numerous Emmy awards, neither TAR host Phil Keoghan nor any of his brethren on competing reality shows have been individually honored for their on-air roles. The Amazing Race's Phil Keoghan, Survivor's Jeff Probst and American Idol's Ryan Seacrest would all figure to be perennial candidates. The eventual sameness may actually be the one problem unless Keoghan ends up as the perennial winner, the list of outstanding host candidates would likely change little from year to year. If there was some kind of way devised to make all on-air reality participants, not just hosts, eligible for such an Emmy then it would make for a more interesting category.Relevant link: Variety

Kynt, Vyxsin at Reality Rumble 2008
2008-02-28 01:35:00
Kynt & Vyxsin of "The Amazing Race 12" will be among the reality television stars to appear at a reality tv/pro wrestling charity fundraiser called Reality Rumble 2008 . The April 5, 2008 event is intended to raise money for special needs students at Spotswood High School in Penn Laird, Virginia.Survivor's Jonny Fairplay and Billy Garcia will wrestle on opposite tag teams in the semi-main event of the wrestling card. As someone who sympathizes with special needs students for reasons that you likely can't imagine, I fully support any effort towards their benefit. For those same reasons, I wish that a certain "Big Brother 9" contestant's new housemate would be a Northern Irish wrestler who loves to fight. Unfortunately, we can't always get what we want. The full press release for the Reality Rumble is on my sister pro wrestling blog, WrestlingBloob.
WGA writers' strike officially over
2008-02-13 04:53:00
The Writers Guild of America approved a new contract with the television and movie studios by an overwhelming margin, officially ending the writers' strike. The WGA essentially won in its attempt to gain residuals for programming streamed via new media including the Internet. Where the WGA failed was in its drive to organize reality genre and animation contemporaries into its union fold. The reality television demand in particular was always problematic considering that so-called reality writers function more as editors on the more legitimate genre programs. The abandonment of that demand helped allow the writers to win on their other points of contention. The end of the strike will allow most scripted television programs to return to network schedules with original episodes over the next several months, traditional sitcoms first over the next month followed by most dramas towards April or May. New "Survivor" Fans vs. Faves premieres
2008-02-08 01:48:00
CBS hopes that a lack of quality competition due to the ongoing writers' strike can boost the latest edition of its granddaddy "Survivor " series. "Survivor Micronesia: Fans vs. Favorites," premiering tonight, is being marketed as matching obsessed fans of the "Survivor" series against a cast of famed "Survivor" characters. The 16th run is notable only in that producers actively sought people with knowledge (or a belief that they have knowledge) about the series. The obsessed fan part of me can certainly relate to the concept, though obviously of a different program.

Poll results (episode 12.10)
2008-01-21 19:52:00
Two thoughts about the next to last episode poll results...a) Nathan and Jennifer really didn't make many fans. We were glad to see them get Philiminated and weren't sympathetic as to how they left. b) Among those of us who avoid spoilers, we correctly handicapped the race final as being between the Ronald & Christina against the TK and Rachel teams, with very few of us pointing towards Nicolas and Donald. TK and Rachel winning TAR12 was a reasonable result if not the most likely one, the collective prediction went slightly in favor of Ronald and Christina.----What team do you predict to win "The Amazing Race 12"? TAR12 finale ratings take hit from playoff football
2008-01-21 19:36:00
What football gave for the TAR12 premiere, it took away for TAR12's conclusion. Nielsen ratings for "The Amazing Race 12" finale took a hit across the board from the overwhelming assault of pro football's NFC championship. TAR12 drew a preliminary 3.1 demo rating in the 18-49 age group for its conclusion, with about 9.7 million overall viewers, well down from the standard established by previous "Amazing Race 12" episodes. Despite football, "The Amazing Race 12" still built significantly off of an approximate 1.8 demo lead-in from a global warming news special. While the Nielsens were still acceptable, the unfortunate scheduling of the finale made drawing a wider audience impossible. Football drew an estimated preliminary 17.8 demo rating with 45.9 million viewers for Fox during the 8 p.m. ET hour against TAR. No show can maintain its usual ratings against such off the charts competition.Final Nielsen ratings should be available Tuesday, later in the week if delayed by Martin Luth...

TAR 12.11 recaplette, TK and Rachel win "The Amazing Race 12"
2008-01-21 04:06:00
If nothing else, it's nice to have "Amazing Race " champions who don't have to be spun to make them seem palatable. Completing a revitalized season of the series, new daters TK Erwin and Rachel Rosales won "The Amazing Race 12." The serene team arrived first at Girdwood Airport outside Anchorage, Alaska. The Roadblock task proved key for the victory as Rachel completed the task of gathering the correct combination of ten objects representing the ten previous TAR12 legs ahead of fellow competitors Christina and Nicolas. ----Most of the final episode consisted of competitors attempting to catch father/daughter team Ronald and Christina. On finding out that the team would travel to an outfitters store in Anchorage, Alaska, the pair looked online in advance to discover the outfitters' street address for their eventual taxi driver. The insightful maneuver gave Ronald and Christina a jump on the other teams. The team functioned in almost complete unison, in marked contrast to most of thei...

"The Amazing Race 12" finale tonight!!
2008-01-20 23:52:00
After waiting several months longer than necessary while reruns and the "Viva Laughlin" fiasco played out on CBS, "Amazing Race " fans have had to wait only an additional eleven weeks to determine a winner of the series' twelfth run. Tonight , we will learn if this battle of generations for a shared million dollar prize goes to the redeemed father Ronald with daughter Christina, laid-back younger daters TK and Rachel or the ultimate upset of politicially incorrect grandson and grandfather Nicolas and Donald. ----"The Amazing Race 12" has easily been one of the most successful runs of the reality series. After a lackluster received All-Stars run last spring, this fall and winter's return to new players and new relationship dynamics has revitalized the program. Outside of two holiday weekends, TAR12 ratings have rivaled or exceeded ratings for all other runs except "The Amazing Race 7." Generating the same ratings for tonight could be an extra challenging endeavor against NFC Champion...

An unexpected TAR12 finale field
2008-01-20 19:42:00
I am a member of a team, and I rely on the team, I defer to it and sacrifice for it, because the team, not the individual, is the ultimate champion. - Mia Hamm----Without spoilers, I dare anyone to have guessed that the field of teams for the eleventh and final leg of "The Amazing Race 12" would have been the particular configuration that we will see compete tonight. In the early stages of TAR12, it seemed as if none of these particular teams would have had more than a ghost of a chance. A three-way contest involving teams like the early dominant siblings Azaria and Hendekea, the athletic daters Nathan and Jennifer and the fan favorite goths Kynt and Vyxsin came off as a much better bet. While those teams strove to excel so long ago, daters TK and Rachel were too laid back and made too many navigational mistakes for their own good. Grandson and grandfather Nicolas and Donald were too slow at every step. Of course, Ronald and Christina had many problems... okay it was just Ronald wit...

2008-01-20 19:32:00
LIVE BLOG!!! REFRESH FOR UPDATES!!!----7:37 p.m.: Welcome to my totally unofficial live blog of "The Amazing Race 12" finale. Accurate spelling is optional. :)CBS is airing rerun "60 Minutes" stories dealing with global warming / climate change under the title "The Age of Warming." This is an old Nielsen ratings trick, Since it's not actually being called "60 Minutes," the ratings hit opposite championship football won't be counted against the show's season average. Cute, huh?If "The Amazing Race 12" takes a ratings hit against championship football though, it will count against the show's season average. Not so cute, huh.----7:41 p.m.: In all seriousness, having a global warming lead-in is a heck of a choice. To my knowledge, TAR has never referenced this issue. It's just as well considering questions would be asked about the carbon footprint left by the global production of the series.---- 7:46 p.m. As a degreed meteorologist myself though, I know just enough to be scared to...

TAR12 by the numbers
2008-01-20 18:30:00
While analyzing the future prospects of teams for "The Amazing Race: All-Stars" so many months ago. I came up with a little measure that I called the Leg Percentile Average. It was an admittedly crude attempt at trying to quantify the previous records of race teams to try to gain a sense of how they would perform in the future. To explain the concept briefly again, we start with a percentile rank.... As Wikipedia put it in an example, a test score which is greater than 85% of the scores of people taking the test is said to be at the 85th percentile. Applied to "The Amazing Race," a team that finished a leg better than 90% of the competing teams would score at the 90th percentile. The Leg Percentile Average (my invention) for a team would then be calculated by simply averaging each of the leg percentile results generated by that team over the course of the race. An LPA index of 50 would be an average score, 100 would be perfect.----By the statistics, which team has performed the best o...

TAR 12.10: Nathan and Jennifer
2008-01-20 00:33:00
Athletic daters Nathan and Jennifer came into "The Amazing Race 12" as an ultracompetitive team, primed to be one of the top contenders on the program. For a time, their inate athletic skills and sheer determination helped them stay in the race and even contend for the top placement on multiple legs. On the tenth leg of TAR12 though, they would find not a first place leg finish but a final elimination. This leg began with Jennifer extra jazzed up since it was her birthday. She wanted to avoid the fighting that had plagued the team on some prior legs. The daters hoped to keep ahead of TK and Rachel and ensure themselves entry into the final. After Nathan and Jennifer were boxed out of the first flight from Osaka to Taipei, the couple started getting snippy with each other.----Frustration built up for Jennifer in particular once in Taipei as Nathan and Jennifer would be seen equalized with the previously delayed TK and Rachel again. Jennifer inadvertently misdirected her team to the wr...
TAR 12.10: Nicolas and Donald
2008-01-19 21:37:00
Grandson and grandfather Nicolas and Donald may be one of the most unlikely finalist teams on "The Amazing Race" ever. By his own admission, grandfather Donald is a step slower physically than the other competitors on the race yet this team has survived being on the brink of elimination in multiple legs including last episode's tenth leg. While the storyline focused on Nathan & Jennifer trying to fend off TK and Rachel, Nicolas and Donald remained centered in the pack of competitive racers. Again too slow to catch taxi to Osaka's airport, the grandson and grandfather found the best flight to Taipei unavailable to them. Instead, they competed at their own steady pace through the Roadblock, finally gaining an advantage over the TK/Rachel and Nathan/Jennifer teams in finding a taxi with a superior alternate route to the Taipei tea shop. While having to walk the jagged stones Detour cost them a placement behind the running TK and Rachel, the good fortune (from their vantage point) of N...

TAR 12.10: Ronald and Christina
2008-01-19 21:18:00
Father/daughter team Ronald and Christina all but coasted to another leg win on the tenth leg of "The Amazing Race 12," their relationship together at its absolute height on the race to date. The winners of leg nine took advantage of their opening position to secure tickets on the early flight from Osaka, Japan to Taipei, Taiwan. Christina then pulled out an old low-road trick of asking the ticket agent to tell competitors Nathan and Jennifer that the flight was full, a tactic that the agent agreed to follow through. I'm no fan of such trickery but it does say something that Christina now felt more freedom to use such a tactic without worrying about her father's reaction. After arriving by themselves in Taipei, Ronald and Christina had no more reason to worry. Making no mistakes along the way, the father and daughter kept ahead of the equalizations that were evening out all other teams. Past a certain point, there was never a doubt that Ronald and Christina would finish first again....

TAR 12.10: TK and Rachel
2008-01-19 21:00:00
Serene, mellow daters TK and Rachel became comeback kids on the tenth leg of "The Amazing Race 12," rising from a nonelimination penalty to make the final cut of race teams. The ongoing theme of the whole tenth episode was TK and Rachel's attempt to catch up to the other teams after being left hours behind on the previous nonelimination leg. TK and Rachel were lucky in the sense that the leg allowed many opportunities for equalizations. The closed Umeda building allowed the daters to make up part of the time gap, the wait for the airport ride to Taipei, Taiwan made up the rest...at least temporarily. We did have one moment of human concern, the closest thing to dissension that we've seen in the leg as TK and Rachel came to almost words on whether to go up the Umeda building in Osaka, Japan to find the Hanging Guards. TK's judgment proved more valid but fortunately, the momentary freak-out wasn't an issue.Thankfully for them, they played a mistake free leg the rest of the way. TK ...
