Massive Duck-Billed Dinosaur Found
2007-10-07 07:49:00 Share on StumbleUpon: The "Arnold Schwarzenegger" of duck-billed dinosaurs, representing a bulky, toothy new species, has just been identified from fossils excavated at Utah's Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, where a team of scientists today announced the find. The 30-foot-long dinosaur, which stood about 10-12 feet tall at the hips and weighed several tons, is believed to be the largest specimen recovered from the site's 75-million-year-old Kaiparowits Formation. A description of the dino appears in this month's Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society.Larger dinos existed in other parts of the world, but few duck-bills — named for their duck-shaped heads — had as much heft."This was a monster dinosaur," said Utah Museum of Natural History paleontologist Scott Sampson, who worked on the dig."It's like a duck-billed dinosaur on steroids, given its bulky bone structure and weight," he added. Robert Plant: No Led Zeppelin Tour
2007-09-29 23:15:00 Share on StumbleUpon: Robert Plant has confirmed there will be no Led Zeppelin tour — or at least, he’s not planning on one (“Not for me but I can’t speak for anyone else,” he told the U.K.’s Daily Express). After news broke that Zep would reunite with Jason Bonham on drums for November 26th’s Ahmet Ertegun tribute at London’s O2 Arena, the inevitable speculation began that the band would follow up the gig with a tour — the fervor for tickets to their one-off gig shut down two Web sites affiliated with the show, and 20 million fans applied for a chance to nab tickets. “We need to do one last great show, because we’ve done some shows and they’ve been crap,” Plant told Express. The Zeppelin frontman went on to say that he worries the touring life doesn’t suit him now that he’s getting older. “When I do come back from touring I’m shocked to find a lot of my mates tend to be going to bed far too early and that means I should probably be doing the same. Radiohead Post More Cryptic Messages, We Break Out Our Decoder Rings
2007-09-27 22:11:00 Share on StumbleUpon: When we last reported on Radiohead ’s cryptic messages, lovingly dubbed “Worm Buffet Code” by the diehards at RH fan site At Ease, the band had revealed that the song “Bodysnatchers” would likely appear on their seventh album, due out in 2008. Since then, the arrival of more codes has become a daily occurrence, with the translations shifting from the vague (“Considering Dissemination”) to the confusing (“Xendless”). Today’s post, however, might be the most revealing one yet. The characters seen above, when decoded, spell out the words “MARCH WAX.” We interpreted this to mean that in March, there will be “wax,” which is semi-hip vernacular for a vinyl record, but in the CD era, the term “wax” is commonly used to denote any medium of music (see reference: OutKast's “The Rooster”). Neighbor Galaxies Just Passing Through
More articles from this author:2007-09-21 22:25:00 Share on StumbleUpon: Our closest galactic companions are not companions at all — just strangers passing us in the night. New measurements of the speeds of the Magellanic Clouds show that the cloudy apparitions of Southern skies may be zooming past the Milky Way and not its little siblings after all.New 3-D measurements of both the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Small Magellanic Cloud put their speeds at close to the escape velocity from the Milky Way. That suggests they're rather new arrivals and may not even stick around. The speeds of the lesser galaxies were worked out by first establishing the precise positions of very distant and powerful quasars in the deep background sky behind the vastly closer Magellanic Clouds. With the quasars providing an unmoving frame of reference, observations with the Hubble Space Telescope allowed astronomers to directly measure changes in positions of stars in the Magellanic Cloud.
