De Niro and Pacino in Righteous Kill Trailer
2007-11-08 20:00:00
In May, I was pretty excited to share news that two great actors, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino , would be working together on a film – and that it would be more than a little scene tacked on at the end of a movie. Righteous Kill , which has Pacino and De Niro as cops hot on the trailer of a serial kills, is being sold with the subheading “The Most Acclaimed Actors of Our Time In the Film Event of the Year”. I will admit that this new trailer looks OK but that’s it – it’s OK. Sure it’s nice to see these two powerhouses together but the two superstars are hardly on screen together. I’m not sure this is what we can expect from the movie, it looks pretty rought, but it’s not a good sign. And the music for this trailer? What on earth were they thinking? NIN? Easily the worst use of music so far this year. I will give it this much: Pacino and De Niro look like they’re both ‘in the zone’. Thanks to Peter over at /Film for the heads up. Check out the trai...

Jonás Cuarón’s The Shock Doctrine Short Film
2007-11-08 19:39:00
Short films seem to be coming from all sides at the moment and this is only one of the few that’s appeared online over the least few months. Noted Canadian author, journalist and activist, best known for her best selling book No Logo, Naomi Klein, has a new book entitled The Shock Doctrine about The myth that the global free market triumphed democratically. Exposing the thinking, the money trail and the puppet strings behind the world-changing crises and wars of the last four decades, The Shock Doctrine is the gripping story of how America’s “free market” policies have come to dominate the world– through the exploitation of disaster-shocked people and countries. Shortly after finishing the book, Klein sent it to Alfonso Cuarón because “I adore his films and felt that the future he created for Children of Men was very close to the present I was seeing in disaster zones. I was hoping he would send me a quote for the book jacket”. But instead of just giving her a...

First Look at Thomas Jane’s Dark Country
2007-11-08 19:30:00
I first remember seeing Thomas Jane as Frank Castle in The Punisher. Sure the movie wasn’t great but it was campy fun and Jane kicked some serious ass as bad ass Frank Castle. Looking back at his filmography, he’s been in a lot of stuff I’ve seen but I can’t say I remember him from any of his other roles before The Punisher but I am really looking forward to his upcoming project The Mutant Chronicles which I drooled about a few months back. Neil over at Film School Rejects posted some information yesterday about another Jane project that’s in the works and wow, did this ever blow my mind a little. Turns out Jane is not only starring but directing The Dark Country about a couple who are driving across the desert from Vegas when they stumble on the of a guy who’s been involved in an accident that’s left him seriously wounded but things go wrong when the injured man attacks the husband. What’s most interesting is that the project is being shot specifically for 3D whi...

Butler’s The Game and Other Cool VR
2007-11-08 18:55:00
A few days back there was a lot of talk of a few posters that had made their way onto the net including one for Gerard Butler’s upcoming project The Game s. Somehow, this one came in totally under my radar but reading a little more about it over at /Film I realized that I’d seen a version of this film before. OK, so maybe exactly like this but similar. According to Alison Lohman who also stars in the film, it’s A sci-fi thriller about convicts who become the players in a video game, and the players are the ones who control them. And if they win 30 games, they are exonerated, and get out free. The prison system is overloaded so they have to find a way to fund it. Yeah, overtones of The Running Man but reading this jogged my memory about a few, two actually, other films that make good use of virtual reality. David Cronenberg’s eXistenZ got caught in a bad place. This story of a game designer who creates a VR game that literally taps into players minds, has all of the usu...

Fido Director Reveals Next Project
2007-11-07 22:32:00
Canadian director Andrew Currie made a heck of an impact with both festival and general movie viewing crowds with his zombie comedy Fido. Now the director is ready to get going on his next project and yes, it’s another comedy. The Truth About Lying is the story of Gregor, a compulsive liar and hypochondriac prone to spontaneous daydreams who had an epic battle with his mother who wants him to be more like his dead father. Sounds pretty funny but it’s actually another project by Currie’s production company that really has me interested. Currie spoke to the folks over at Dread Central and divulged that his production company, Anagram Pictures, is working on an upcoming horror movie called The Thaw which focuses on a group of four ecology students who have to destroy a prehistoric parasite that is released when a woolly mammoth is discovered in the melting ice cap. Now that sounds like it has great potential! No word yet on who will star and it looks like the project may still...
