TCA Live Blog Day 6: V
2009-08-09 03:06:00 5:25PM: Although V executive producer Scott Peters is quick to joke that his secret plan is to try and attract every single Sci Fi fan by turning V into what one critic calls the LOVE BOAT of science fiction courtesy of a cast that includes alum from FIREFLY, THE 4400 and LOST, he promises he really did go with the best actors we could find. 5:27PM: Elizabeth Mitchell reconfirms what every LOST fan already knew: That she is indeed returning to the island (the island, of course being Hawaii, where the show shoots) — more than once — and naturally cannot speak to the fate of Juliet, “I can’t say whether Juliet is alive or dead, but as with all things LOST, it will be tricky.” 5:29PM: Another reporter notes that Morena Baccarin was perfectly cast as the V’s idea of what earth people want to see. Well, duh. 5:32PM: The cast, which we should mention seem to genuinely like each-other, announce their series premiere date in unison (Tuesday, Nov. 3 at 8PM.) A dra... More About: Blog , Live
TCA Live Blog Day 6: EASTWICK
2009-08-09 02:20:00 4:41PM: The EASTWICK promotional reel is using the TRUE BLOOD ‘Bad Things’ theme for their clip package. Not cool ABC, not cool at all. 4:43PM: Luckily for Rebecca Romijn, husband Jerry O’Connell is currently in Hollywood pergatude courtesy of the train-wreck that was his short-lived FOX ‘comedy’ DO NOT DISTURB taking some time off to take care of the twins she gave birth to mere weeks before shooting the pilot. 4:46PM: In response to a reporter calling EASTWICK “DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES with Magic,” executive producer Maggie Friedman responds, “Not at all.” Which we’re gonna have to agree with. After-all, Wisteria Lane featured four lovely leading ladies, whereas EASTWICK only features three. See, totally different. 4:48PM: Unlike the movie, which was very much a product of its time (that time being the 80’s), Friedman promises that EASTWICK is contemporary, where three ordinary women are dealing with being given extraor... TCA Live Blog Day 6: FLASHFORWARD
2009-08-08 22:54:00 1:00PM: Just how enjoyable is the FLASHFORWARD pilot? I’m freezing cold, exhausted and hungry, yet still loving it. 1:01PM: Good News: Executive Producer David S. Goyer promises that “by the end of the first season, most of the questions raised in the pilot, including the one you see at the very end will be answered.” Bad News: The overarching mystery surrounding the cause of the blackout won’t come out until the end of the series, which Goyer hopes will last three seasons to really do the show justice. 1:05PM: On the lessons learned from LOST, Goyer shares that, “LOST taught me that you can do a show with a large ensemble cast and tell a big cinematic story.” Tell that to the creators of THE NINE, INVASION, SURFACE, JERICHO, KIDNAPPED etc… 1:08PM: Executive Producer Marc Guggenheim teases that while the first season will tell the story of April 29, 2010…. April 29 isn’t necessarily the season finale. 1:10PM: Star Dominic Monag... More About: Blog , Live
TCA Live Blog Day 6: THE MIDDLE
2009-08-08 20:50:00 10:39AM: The panel for the Patricia Heaton laugher THE MIDDLE starts off on a very SCRUBS-centric note, with co-star Neil Flynn setting the record straight with regards to the fate his fan favorite character. “There’s a good chance I’ll pop up maybe just once… but we were done, the show ended, we were free to go and they [SCRUBS] started up again. Which is fine, but I’m very glad to be here… is that what I’m supposed to say?” 10:42AM: Really big stalker fan of series star Patricia Heaton? “You can see me at Ralph’s three times a week at Vine and Melrose,” reveals Patricia Heaton when asked what it’s like to be a working mother with four kids. “I buy my clothes in the boys section of Target. That’s what I wear, often three days in a row. Green Polyester sweatpants, hoodies, that’s me.” Jokes Flynn, “Target’s, America’s store.” 10:46AM: FYI: Nothing says funny lik... TCA Live Blog Day 6: MODERN FAMILY
2009-08-08 19:08:00 9:10AM: Watching clips from MODERN FAMILY, also known as the Fall’s funniest new show. 9:11AM: Spoiler-Alert! The three separate families portrayed in MODERN FAMILY are actually all related. A plot point that critics are now allowed to share with you ever-since ABC research indicated that one of the strengths of the show is that everybody is related. 9:13AM: Even though it works brilliantly, Executive Producer Steven Levitan admits to being initially wary with regards to employing the documentary style now ubiquitous across NBC’s comedy line-up. 9:15AM: “What people don’t understand is that DO NOT DISTURB [last season's short-lived incredibly unfunny 'laugher' on FOX] was really a three-part miniseries and we told the story we wanted to tell,” jokes star Jesse Tyler Ferguson when asked what it feels like to jump from a really awful show to MODERN FAMILY. 9:19AM: Attention right wing — with regards to 33% of the MODERN FAMILY cast (Jesse Tyler Fergu... Kathy Griffin Talks Emmys, Paula Abdul & Sarah Palin
2009-08-07 22:27:00 Despite a 2 million dollar book deal, two Emmys for MY LIFE ON THE D LIST and a Grammy nod for her shameless, albeit very funny comedy CD “For Your Consideration”, Kathy Griffin still considers herself a D-Lister heart. So much so that the headline-grabbing queen of hilarity still deemed it necessary to bring along a sign (see above photo) to Wednesday night’s NBC Universal TCA Party in an effort to ensure she wouldn’t get lost in a sea of famous faces that included stars from THE OFFICE, CHUCK and more. An effort that paid off, with said sign catching your very own TV Addict’s eye, allowing us to join a gaggle of TCA reporters for a quick Q&A. What brings you to tonight’s TCA party? I’m campaigning for an Emmy. I’m nominated for two of them and I want to win more than anyone on the ANTIQUES ROADSHOW. Having already won an Emmy, is campaigning not beneath you? TCA Live Blog Day 4: LIE TO ME
2009-08-07 03:20:00 5:03PM: On the reason THE UNIT/ THE SHIELD creator Shawn Ryan joined LIE TO ME, creator Samuel Baum offered up the following not-at-all-rehearsed comment, “At the end of last season I tested positive for HGH.” 5:05PM: It only took three minutes for Ryan to get in his one-and-only dig at CBS when explaining his reason for jumping on board LIE TO ME. “Not only did I really enjoy the show, after THE UNIT was unceremoniously dumped by CBS, I found myself with a little time on my hands.” Ouch! 5:07PM: Mekhi Phifer, who appeared on two episodes last season has joined the cast as a series regular this year as Special Agent Ben Renyolds who Phifer describes as “the guy with the gun and the badge in an effort to bring some of these cases home.” Added Baum, “We needed someone who wouldn’t get blown off the screen by Roth. A man, who had gravity.” 5:11PM: Star Kelli Williams promises a great start out of the gate with the season’s fi... More About: Blog , Live
TCA Live Blog Day 4: FRINGE
2009-08-07 01:12:00 2:26PM: Those worries that FRINGE’s self-contained easy-to-follow episodic adventures are about to jump into mythology-heavy LOST territory, fear not. According to executive producer Jeff Pinkner, FRINGE is only going to tell the story of two universes — our own — and what the writer’s refer to internally as “over there.” Adding, “No time travel!” 2:27PM: “Leonard [Nimoy] will be back as much as he wants,” revealed Pinkner. That said, [Spoiler Alert!] having seen the the show’s second season premiere — we’ve got some bad news for you. Nimoy while alluded to, does not make an appearance in the premiere. 2:30PM: Did you know that the average television viewer only watches 3 to 4 episodes of a show per season. No really! Which is why season one seemed to re-set itself every three to four episodes. And also why co-creator/writer Alex Kurtzman promises that season 2 will have a more prominent mythology. TCA Live Blog Day 4: GLEE
2009-08-06 23:51:00 1:43PM: “Rachel Berry is similar to how I acted when I was eight years old,” admits star Lea Michelle when asked if she can relate to her GLEE character. “Singing and performing was my passion.” 1:46PM: A reporter — who clearly hasn’t seen the show — asks if GLEE is simply an attempt to cash in on the HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL phenomenon. Co-creator Brad Falchuk reveals that he hasn’t seen HSM, but believes the success of the Disney franchise may have created opportunities for a show such as GLEE. Adds executive producer Dante Di Loreto, “I think the world’s a better place if there are more people singing and dancing.” 1:47PM: In response to a GLEE fan’s worst fear, that the show is too smart for a country that finds TWO AND A HALF MEN funny, Falchuk says matter-of-factly, “that would suck!” 1:48PM: Apparently, creative genius/producer Ryan Murphy is absent from the panel because he is in New York shooting a movie... Today’s TV Addict Top 5: FRINGE Season Two Spoilers
2009-08-06 20:14:00 1. While the first episode of FOX’s FRINGE opened with a plane-related incident involving a group of dead strangers, the second season begins with an automobile crash which while smaller in scope is larger in impact, especially where one of your favorite agents is concerned! 2. Fans will be relieved to discover that Olivia does, in fact, return from the alternate universe in which she last was seen. But of course, there’s a catch or two. For one thing, she returns with key pieces of her memory regarding the events that transpired there compromised. Worse, she’s not the only one to come through that mysterious doorway. 3. Don’t believe everything you read about Agent Charlie Francis — even if it was said by portrayer Kirk Acevedo, who posted on his Facebook page that he’d been fired. Or rather, do believe it. Kinda. Cryptic enough for you? 4. The season premiere is very newbie friendly thanks to the introduction of Agent Jessup (played by Meghan Markle), whose dialogu... NBC Too Dumb To Sell Smart Ideas?
2009-08-06 16:45:00 By: CT In the classic flick The Big Chill, Jeff Goldblum’s character, who labored for People magazine, worked under an edict to not write any article longer than the average American could read during the average crap. Apparenty, NBC is now going to be operating under orders to not try and sell the average American on anything that can’t be easily summed up in 30 seconds or less. So says, basically, Angela Bromstad, NBC’s president of primetime entertainment. Yesterday, she told the Television Critics of America that KINGS basically failed because it was “a little too high brow and too difficult to sell in a 30-second slot.” She went on to say “It doesn’t mean we’re not looking for big ideas. They have to be big ideas that the audience can grab on to.” For the record, let us fill Mr. Bromstad in on the real reason KINGS failed. While the big problem was marketing, it wasn’t the concept of the show or the inability of the audience to understand so big a con... More About: Ideas , Smart , Dumb , Sell

TCA Live Blog Day 3: STARGATE UNIVERSE
2009-08-06 01:02:00 2:57PM: “Something new and different,” is the theme of the panel and what co-creator Bob Wright promises STARGATE: UNIVERSE [SGU] is all about. “Other than the ‘Stargate ,’ which is very much at the core of the show, a whole lot is different from the original series.” 2:59PM: David Blue comes out of the closet… as a huge nerd/ geek. Explains the actor, “It’s a great role to play because I get to come onto the show, watch the Stargate turn on, and like anyone of us in the same situation be absolutely flabbergasted.” Adds co-creator Brad Wright, “David Blue is our on-set focus group.” 3:01PM: Still apprehensive about this nerdy Sci Fi SyFy show? Perhaps co-creator Robert Cooper’s taste in television can entice you, “I’m a huge fan of FIREFLY, which kind of set the bar for modern day science fiction for us. TCA Live Blog Day 3: TRAUMA
2009-08-05 22:12:00 12:12PM: TRAUMA is not going to be blowing up the world each and every week. Which sadly, doesn’t come as much of a surprise since NBC President Angela Bromstad just spent the morning railing against the increasing cost of production and fancy explosions + shutting down a major San Francisco highway for five days sounds really expensive. 12:13PM: Executive producer Dario Scardapane promises that while the explosions will grab your attention, what hopefully grabs your heart are these characters. Aahhhhhhh 12:18PM: Just learned that TRAUMA star Cliff Curtis is a New Zealand native. Futher proof that anyone with an accent sounds cooler than me. 12:22PM:“TRAUMA is what happens during the twenty minutes before you hit the double doors,” elaborates Scardapane in what’s turning out to be the catchiest elevator pitch of the day thus far. “This is the stuff you didn’t see on ER.” Well, except for the time that helicopter landed on Dr. Romano, or the ... Our Take on UGLY BETTY’s Extreme Makeover
2009-08-05 21:07:00 Did Betty Suarez just get an extreme makeover? Or is the above photo ">(Which may in fact be part of a rumored test balloon floated by the proverbial powers that be) simply a brilliant marketing ploy by ABC to remind fans that, “Hey, we only moved BETTY to Friday, we didn’t cancel her!” That’s the question we find ourselves asking this afternoon after taking a look at the new and improved Demi Lovoto not-so-ugly Betty. The other question — again, assuming that this ‘leaked’ photo isn’t simply an ingenious marketing ploy, single episode stunt, or dream sequence, is — has Betty’s makeover gone too extreme? I mean sure, we’re the first to admit that we’ve scratched our head for years now as to how and why such a seemingly smart, self-confident and driven young women could fail so spectacularly to pick up even a few fashion tips whilst toiling away at Mode these past three years (Eyebrow pluck, contacts, anything!) TCA Live Blog Day 2: CW Prez Dawn Ostroff Gets Grilled
2009-08-04 21:56:00 Like a dead man woman walking, CW President Dawn Ostroff tried her best to delay the inevitable. But alas, at the annual press tour, it’s surprisingly difficult to avoid the firing squad that is the Television Critics Association as they anxiously await their opportunity to unleash a flurry of questions, most of them revolving around the current status of Mischa Barton’s health. So after distracting the audience with shiny beautiful things (namely Elle Macphersen’s sparkly sequined jacket during THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE panel), the smoldering Robert Pattinson-esque looks of new VAMPIRE DIAIRES bad boy Paul Wesley and promo after promo after promo for the network’s slew of new shows that the CW swears — you’ll be like totally blogging, tweeting and im’ing about — it was time. Time for Ostroff to answer for her crimes against humanity (Read: EVERWOOD’s cancellation!) Okay not really (and yes, still bitter!). But here’s what she did have to... 2009-08-03 22:40:00 Source: Alan Sepinwall’s Twitpic Is it pure happenstance that mere days after sending a roomful of hungry TV critics free pizza (see above photo) Craig Ferguson ’s TCA panel was filled to the brim, so much so that there was overflow in the hallways? Okay, probably. After all, Ferguson is one of the sharpest and funniest comedians (or, as he refers to himself “middle-aged white guys”) on the dial, as you’ll quickly discover upon reading his no-holds-barred responses to questioned lobbed his way by a room full of fans. Err… I mean, TCA members. On his upcoming book: It’s reasonably priced and available on September 27. It’s an autobiography and I’m looking forward to reading it. I hear it’s great.
