Winter TCA Press Tour 2012: ALCATRAZ Live Blog
2012-01-09 03:53:00 10:22AM: Once thought of as a dumping ground or burning off point for shows that simply weren’t good enough for the Fall schedule, ALCATAZ’s January premiere may have been the best thing to happen to the series since the casting of Jorge Garcia. Explained Executive Producer J.J. Abrams, “One of the advantages of being a midseason show was that instead of just saying, ‘You know what would have been cool?’ you actually have the time — and if you’re lucky the ability — to make changes to this thing.” First and foremost among those changes, according to Abrams, was a far strong and more easily identifiable connection between the show’s lovely leading lady Sarah Jones (Detective Rebecca Madsen) and the infamous prison itself. 10:24AM: But just what makes what in essence is a police procedural different from the vast array of the police procedurals currently on the air? Simply put, Alcatraz housed the worst of the worst. What’s mor... More About: Winter , Press , Blog , Tour , Live
We Preview the Magnificent 2nd Season Premiere of DOWNTON ABBEY
2012-01-09 00:01:00 The first season of DOWNTON ABBEY invited viewers back to the Edwardian times at an aristocrat estate in England just as the Titanic sank in 1912. The subsequent story followed the ripple-effects of the loss of the estate’s current heir and the rise of an unknown succeeding heir – as lineage and the question of “who would inherit” were absolutely vital. When a young barrister, Matthew Crawley, was discovered to be the next in line to inherit the vast estate of Downton Abbey, the current occupants, the Earl and Countess of Grantham as well as the rest of the Crawley family, were surprised and unsure how to welcome their newly discovered cousin. Because the Earl and his wife had only daughters and no sons, it was thought that the estate’s heir should marry their eldest daughter to keep the estate in the family. But, as this was 1912 and the world was on the verge of a new era, women were no longer content to be bartered as chattel and were exploring the worl... More About: Preview , Season , Premiere

Winter TCA Press Tour 2012: Fox President Kevin Reilly Dishes on the Future
2012-01-08 21:39:00 11:07AM: Before submitting himself to the firing squad that is a roomful of tired and cranky television critics, Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly announces plans for a new late night animated comedy block (Think: Adult Swim) that will air Saturdays at 11PM – 12:30AM starting in January 2013. 11:14AM: Despite going on record during the previous summer’s TCA Press Tour that the Network would be making a decision on the future (or lack thereof) of HOUSE sometime in the Fall, Reilly fesses up to failure to communicate. “To be honest with you, it’s hard to imagine the Network with HOUSE so we kind of agreed to mutually put off any decision until the first of the year and we still have yet to sit down and see where we are,” Reilly says, being sure to add for any anxious fans who may-or-may-not be reading this. “We haven’t had the big meeting yet, but we are not going to be unceremoniously handing out pink slips. THE FIRM Review: We Throw the Book at NBC!
2012-01-08 19:48:00 In the opening scene of THE FIRM, NBC’s latest legal thriller premiering Sunday January 8th, Mitch McDeere breathlessly calls wife Abby and alerts her to the fact that, “It’s happening again.” Suffice it to say, truer words have never been spoken. And while we’re not about to spoil what exactly “it” is within the context of the show, what is happening again — at least in the greater scheme of things — is yet another disappointing attempt by a television network to capitalize on an already popular brand in an all too transparent effort to make a quick buck. Which is why, rather than bother explaining the convoluted plot that picks up 10 years after the events of the popular Tom Cruise film that sees Mitch McDeere (Josh Lucas) once again inexplicably find himself caught up with yet another law firm that is.. brace yourself… up to no good (!), we thought we’d take this opportunity to throw the book at NBC by asking: Did the unmiti... Winter TCA Press Tour 2012: SMASH Live Blog
2012-01-07 02:01:00 3:33PM: The SMASH panel kicks off with a video greeting from executive producer Steven Spielberg who NBC Entertainment President Bob Greenblatt promises has been incredibly involved and passionate about the show. To the point that he has personally edited musical sequences. Not-so-fun-fact: Spielberg did not send a similar video prior to Fox’s TERRA NOVA panel last fall. Read into that what you will. 3:38PM: Just to give you an indication as to how good SMASH actually is. A roomful of tired, hungry and soulless television critics actually “Aaaawwwwwed” when there was a momentary technical difficulty with the video sizzle reel for the show. 3:44PM: Greenblatt teases that Marilyn’s road to Broadway will be a rocky one, with the first season culminating in the show’s out-of-town try out, and the second one — should the show be lucky enough to see a second season — revolve around how the show fares in the Big Apple. 3:46PM: Contrary to reports in a rece... Colin Morgan Dishes on MERLIN Season 4
2012-01-07 00:24:00 After an epic battle with the evil sorceress Morgan a and her sister Morgause to reclaim the throne of Camelot at the end of the 3rd season, MERLIN returns with the promise of more adventure, subversive plots, and continuing the amazing journey of the legendary Prince Arthur and Merlin as they step into the roles they were destined for – King of Camelot and the greatest wizard of all time. Taking a few minutes to talk with the press in a recent conference call, star Colin Morgan talked about the challenges Merlin will face in the 4th season and whether there is any hope for the increasingly unhinged Morgana. What can you share about MERLIN’s fourth season and how it’s going to be different and what we can expect? COLIN: I think one of the first things people will notice is that it looks very different. It’s got a different tone to it this year. We’re shooting on 35 mil, which is what movies are filmed at the minute. So it’s got a real movie-look to it, along with a ... More About: Season
Today’s TV Addict Top 5: Questions with SHAMELESS Star Cameron Monaghan
2012-01-06 22:57:00 Just how much fun is the scandalous and sex-filled second season of Showtime’s SHAMELESS premiering this Sunday at 10PM (Monday at 9PM on TMN in Canada). So much so that we feel the inexplicable need to forgoe lunch at today’s action-packed NBC portion of Winter TCA 2012 to bring you a few words with last season’s break-out star Cameron Monaghan. Despite the rising number of gay teens on television, a character like Ian on SHAMELESS still remains somewhat of a standout. What type of reaction have you gotten to your role on the show? Cameron Monaghan: It’s been awesome. I like to focus on the social media, Facebook, Twitter and I speak to fans as much as possible. I get tons of tons of messages and comments saying that they’re a gay teen watching this or they were a gay teen growing up and this is their story. They feel like they can really relate to this and they’re glad that someone is portraying it honestly, fairly and without insulting their i... More About: Questions , Star

Winter TCA Press Tour 2012: The 5 Biggest Stories to Come Out of NBC’s Ex
2012-01-06 20:29:00 COMMUNITY Fans: Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid. While NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt was quick to reinforce the fact that COMMUNITY has (a) not been canceled, and (b) will return to the air at a date to be determined in the Spring, he was slightly less forthright when asked about the potential of a fourth season. Translation: Fans of Greendale Community College should pretty much expect to hold their breath until the last possible moment (Read: the annual May Upfront) when a decision on the show’s future (or lack thereof) will be made based on NBC’s scheduling needs and pilot development. “Sexytime” is coming to SVU In a not-so-subtle attempt to re-energize the waning interest in NBC’s once dominant LAW & ORDER franchise, Greenblatt enthusiastically introduced a clip of SVU series star Mariska Hargitay expressing excitement for the show’s latest guest star Harry Connick Jr., who will be joining the show for a 4 episode arc as an assista... Witches and Warlocks and Wizards Oh My! We Preview MERLIN’s Magical Four
2012-01-06 17:40:00 Fans of the fantasy series MERLIN have had a long wait since the dramatic finale of the 3rd season last year. But the long hiatus is finally over and it was worth the wait. Returning with its 4th season, things start off with a bang – or rather a nasty tear between our world and the netherworld and creepy crawlies soon swarm over Camelot. One icy touch and a person is not simply frozen in fear – they are literally frozen to death. Unleashed by Morgana and her evil sister Morgause, the Derocha are not simply ghosts in the night. They are supernatural creatures that will steal your soul, the very breath from your body, and worse yet – Merlin’s magic is impotent against them. It is the moment that every wizard fears, when you look into the face of your enemy completely helpless to defend yourself against them. Until this point, Merlin has been able to stand steadfast in the knowledge that he can always use his magic to protect himself and everyone he cares about... More About: Preview

The TV Addict’s Top 10 TV Shows of 2011
2011-12-30 20:00:00 While they may not have been the year’s most critically acclaimed or the country’s most popular, each the following shows made this TV Addict’s Top 10 of ’11 for the simple reason that each week, they left us jonesing another fix. You know those people who say “less is more?” Yeah, they’re totally wrong. As the following programs prove, too much is never enough. THE GOOD WIFE (CBS) Since previous “Best Ofs” have already seen us shine the spotlight on the crackling chemistry that comes hand-in-hand with THE GOOD WIFE’s all-star ensemble and roster of guest stars that reads like a “Who’s Who” of Broadway, we thought we’d take this opportunity to highlight something slightly less sexy about the show that good doesn’t even begin to describe. Once thought of as the show’s achilles heel, this year saw the legal drama raise the bar on the courtroom aspect of the series thanks to sharply written and thought provoking case...

The Top 10 Television Shows of 2011 (A Second Opinion)
2011-12-29 22:24:00 With the vast array of astoundingly good TV shows currently airing across the television landscape, it is incredibly hard to point a mere Top 10. In an effort to single out what I thought reached the Top 10 for 2011, the following are 10 shows that excelled in writing, casting, characters, cinematography, direction, production and publicity. Interestingly, 4 out of 10 of the shows are British TV shows, which just goes to show that America cannot claim exclusively to be the “best of the best.” DOCTOR WHO First and foremost, DOCTOR WHO takes the top crown. No matter what other critics say, it is a remarkable achievement for any TV show to continue to enthral viewers after 48 years – of which it aired over 33 televised seasons in more than 50 countries around the globe. The genius in recasting the lead character every couple of years adds to the renewed interest in fans and the writers in creating new stories; but, by far, the current broadcast run under the helm ... And not just because an Australian set visit is incredibly high up on our bucket list. DEXTER! WORK IT! ONE LIFE TO LIVE! COMMUNITY! The TV Addict Week in Rewind
2011-12-23 15:01:00 Best Fan Shout-Out: Soon-to-end ONE LIFE TO LIVE used its soap-within-a-soap, FRATERNITY ROW, to do a story in which a fan (the fantastic Ilene Kristen as Roxy) tries to save her favorite doomed soap. Oddest Move: So GLEE has cast REAL HOUSEWIVES OF ATLANTA “star” NeNe Leakes? Huh. Anybody else think the casting couch over there reeks of desperation? And speaking of desperate measures… Lamest Hail Mary: With the clock running out, Sunday’s DEXTER finale had the writer’s room doing their best Tim Tebow impersonation by delivering the single biggest twist longtime fans had been clamoring for. Too bad, what should have amounted to a moment of epically cool proportions came off as little more than a sad attempt to save what has universally been deemed as DEXTER’s most disappointing season to date. Biggest No-Brainer: So scandal-ridden Alec Baldwin won’t be running for Mayor of New York City? Not since Donald Trump announced he wouldn’t be s...
