The TV Addict Podcast: Brutal
2009-09-24 05:00:00
This week, Daniel (the TV Addict) and co-host Ariel wait for it… actually talk TV. No really! With the fall season now officially upon us, we press pause on our pointless banter in order to squeeze in some genuine honest to goodness TV talk. As per usual, please don’t hesitate, and by ‘don’t hesitate,’ we of course mean… let us know what you think by leaving us a comment, reviewing us on iTunes and/or sending us an email at info@thetvaddict.com or ariel@thetvaddict.com. Today’s TV Addict Top 5: Questions with MODERN FAMILY’s Jesse Tyler Fer
2009-09-24 00:36:00
Many (including your very own TV Addict) have called MODERN FAMILY the funniest new show of the season, but so to was THE CLASS (Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s short-lived CBS comedy). Which is why we have to start off this interview by asking the obvious, albeit slightly awkward question. Just how nervous are you to be kicking off the Fall starring in the ‘it’ show of the season, again! Jesse Tyler Ferguson: Oh God I’m thrilled about the buzz, but I’m trying not to think about it too much because of course it’s terrifying. Not as terrifying as being on a badly buzzed about show mind you (See: Ferguson’s mercifully short-lived FOX ‘comedy’ DO NOT DISTURB), but there is a lot of pressure. Especially among the cast, who were kind of nervous that subsequent episode wouldn’t live up to the quality of the pilot. Thankfully, I can assure you that the episodes we’ve been shooting thus far have been equally as good and the quality we...

We Review HANK, THE MIDDLE, MODERN FAMILY, COUGAR TOWN & EASTWICK
2009-09-23 20:30:00
By: Aleks Chan You’re probably going to hear a lot about how this fall is the year of the comedy: of all the fall pilots, comedies are heading the pack in terms of buzz and praise. And ABC, who’s been a stranger to a hit sitcom for quite awhile now, is betting on a full-on Wednesday night blitzkrieg, scheduling five new shows back to back without any ratings support from an established hit. It’s the kind of high risk, big rewards gambling that seems so relevant given the…state of broadcast sitcoms. Too bad the Alphabet Network’s opening salvo threatens to ruin the whole thing: HANK (debuting next Wednesday September 30 at 8PM), where Kelsey Grammer plays his umpteenth iteration of a blow-hard, seems so out of touch (with the national sentiment, what’s funny, what’s stupid, you name it), you’d be tempted to give up with it and just call the whole thing off. The premise – Grammer’s title character moves his family back to Virginia after he’s booted from hi...

Exclusive: GLEE Star Chris Colfer on Kurt’s Coming Out Party
2009-09-23 17:59:00
As much as it may be in-vogue to snicker about the death of broadcast television thank-you-very-much-Emmy-telecast, we sometimes forget what a powerful medium it is. In the blink of an eye, the small screen in your living room has the ability to get presidents elected, turn unknowns into idols and, perhaps most importantly, alter people’s perceptions. Just ask DAWSON’S CREEK alum Kerr Smith, whose portrayal of openly-gay high schooler Jack McPhee quite literally changed lives. “I remember this one kid, he watched that one episode where Jack comes out of the closet to his father, and he told me right after that he walked in the next room and told his parents that he was gay.  I don’t know how to feel about that, you know what I mean?” Smith told journalists recently. ”That character was quite influential on a lot of kids that were going through the same kinds of issues as Jack. I remember some of the letters I used to get that just made me cr...

Channel Surfing with CT: THE FORGOTTEN, GLEE & MY ANTONIO
2009-09-23 15:27:00
Don’t be surprised if ABC’s THE FORGOTTEN is one of the just-begun season’s first casualties. Not because it’s a bad show — which it’s not, particularly — or because it’s basically COLD CASE: SPECIAL VOLUNTEER UNIT — which it is, basically — but rather because it premiered last night with almost no buzz. I’d be willing to bet that most of you are sitting there right now saying, “I never even saw an ad for that! What’s it about?” This happens every season… network’s decide early on which shows to throw their advertising budgets behind and, in doing so, basically allow others to become… well, forgotten. So while you’ve seen a barrage of ads for COUGAR TOWN, FLASH FORWARD, EASTWICK and MODERN FAMILY,chances are THE FORGOTTEN managed to sneak onto the airwaves without you even being aware of its existence. (I only happened to see an ad yesterday for the first time.) Plus it had ...

The Morning After: THE GOOD WIFE
2009-09-23 13:59:00
By: CT Sometimes, what you see is what you get. In the case of CBS’ new drama THE GOOD WIFE, what CBS showed us in the endless promos leading up to its debut wasn’t at all what actually aired last night. The promos sold WIFE as a story about political scandal and its impact on a marriage when, in fact, the show is little more than a female-empowerment legal procedural. To be sure, it is a well-written, strongly-cast procedural, but a procedural none the less. The political scandal which took center stage during 95 percent of the ads took place in the first minute — which, by the way, many people missed if not tuned in for the preceding NCIS: LOS ANGELES, in a move CBS should be ashamed of — before we fast-forwarded six months to find Julianna Margulies’ Alicia starting work at a law firm. She is, of course, competing against a younger attorney (GILMORE GIRLS’ Matt Czuchry) for a spot, and the firm is ruled over by a strong woman (Christine Baransk...

First Look: William Bell Returns to FRINGE

If you were one of the many FRINGE fanatics who found the lack of William Bell and the lack of answers in last week’s season premiere, well illogical. Get ready for a double helping of both thanks to the October 8th episode entitled “Momentum Deferred,” which includes the return of Leonard Nimoy’s mysterious William Bell when flashbacks reveal more about Olivia’s visit to the alternate reality. Today’s TV Addict Top 5: Questions with MELROSE PLACE Star Michael Rady
2009-09-22 22:53:00
Between SWINGTOWN, GREEK and now MELROSE PLACE I think it’s safe to say that you’re having quite the year! Michael Rady: I’ve just been going from job to job pinching myself, first SWINGTOWN which the optimist in me didn’t think someone would let die, then GREEK which was a dream job and gave me the opportunity to work steadily pretty much for a season, and now MELROSE PLACE. I really have been so fortunate. Was there any trepidation about stepping into such an iconic apartment building? I didn’t really think about it. It really does nothing for me at all thinking about that kind of stuff. Our show is an entirely new show, set in the same place. Were you a fan of the original series? Only to the extent that my older sister watched it and I’d always be sitting on the couch asking, “What are you watching?” Pretty much all I remember is Heather Locklear and beautiful people sitting around the pool. Is Jonah the new Michael Mancini, the a...

Channel Surfing: HOUSE, HEROES, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER & THE BIG BANG TH
2009-09-22 19:18:00
Call us crazy, but last night’s two-hour season premiere of HOUSE that had the good doctor (not to mention us viewers) stuck in Mayfield Psychiatric Hospital for what felt like an eternity alongside some very talented guest stars (including Franka Potente, Andre Braugher and Broadway’s Lin-Manuel Miranda) was an epic fail. Okay sure, Laurie now has the pre-requisite ‘Very Special Episode’ for next year’s Emmy reel already in the can. And yes, the show, which does tend to become somewhat repetitious did switch things up from the standard mystery illness of the week. But for our money, last night is not how you start off a season. Personal character journeys that leave supporting favorites such as Cuddy, Chase and Cameron in the wings should be reserved for mid-season or at the very least, sweeps episodes. Not a season opener where viewers have waited very patiently all summer long for the return of their favorite differential diagnosticians. While Rober...

Heather Locklear Returns to MELROSE PLACE, History Repeats Itself in More W
2009-09-22 16:08:00
After saving the original MELROSE PLACE from the brink of cancellation almost two decades ago, history is about to repeat itself thanks to this morning’s announcement that has Heather Locklear set to reprise her role as scheming vixen Amanda Woodward on the CW’s fledgling MELROSE PLACE re-boot starting November 17. And while our inner-teenaged TV Addict — you know, the one that was so obsessed with MELROSE PLACE that we actually had this poster (pictured above) on our wall is really really excited — our slightly older and far more realistic inner-adult TV Addict is worried. Especially when you take into account the CW’s press release that touts Heather Locklear joining “original castmates Laura Leighton, Thomas Calabro, Josie Bisset and Daphne Zuniga in the updated version for The CW.” Note the absence to any next gen tenants such as the deliciously manipulative Katie Cassidy or our favorite hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold Stephanie Jacobsen. It’...

Breaking: GLEE Will Not Be the Next FIREFLY!
2009-09-21 23:02:00
Or for that matter — the next REUNION, THE TICK, DRIVE, WONDERFALLS, PROFIT or THE LONE GUNMAN — thanks to Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly giving the critically acclaimed GLEE a full season pick-up. “The response we’ve received to GLEE has been remarkable,” said Reilly. “It’s already got the makings of a cultural phenomenon. I’ve seen all 13 episodes, and Ryan Murphy, his team and the talented GLEE cast have knocked our socks off with their incredible work. We’re happy to pick up this gem of a show, and can’t wait to see what they’ll do with the rest of the season.” Needless to say, neither can we. Congratulations all around to this remarkable cast and creative team.

Today’s TV Addict Top 5: Questions with THE BIG BANG THEORY’s Simon Hel
2009-09-21 22:49:00
At what point does it sink in that you’re a part of something special? Simon Helberg: It’s funny, because when we’re shooting the show, it’s just about five people who love each other and hang out which you might not get when you’re watching at home. But things like seeing the cover of TV Guide, or attending Comic Con, it’s moments like those where you’re like “Oh My God!” That’s surreal. Do you think we’ll ever see the day when Wolowitz gets a steady girlfriend? It would definitely be possible, but it would have to be a very specific type of girlfriend. Especially when you consider that if Wolowitz had to choose between his mother and a girl, he may choose his mother. Speaking of which, will we ever meet Wolowitz’s mom? I don’t think so. I don’t think you’d ever want to see the face behind such a shrill and shredding voice. It’s much better to leave it to the imagination. One thing fans...

Our 2009 Emmy Winners & Losers
2009-09-21 17:12:00
WINNER: NEIL PATRICK HARRIS Not only did the legendary performer cement his reputation as the best host in the biz by making good on his promise to deliver a highly entertaining and well-paced award show, he managed to get that pesky (read: obligatory) Kanye West joke out of the way within the show’s first five minutes. “It’s my job to make sure things run smoothly. So let’s hope that Kanye West likes 30 ROCK.” [See Opening Video] LOSER: NEIL PATRICK HARRIS Literally. For losing a much-deserved Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Emmy to the far less funny Jon Cryer (TWO AND A HALF MEN). Begging the question, where is Kanye when you need him? WINNER: RICKY GERVAIS Who in presenting an Emmy for Outstanding Variety/Comedy Series once again nailed his audition for any future hosting gig with a side-splitting riff on how in a roomful of television stars like Steve Carell, he’s probably considered handsome. Or at the very least, above-average. LOS...

In anticipation of Sunday’s EMMY Awards airing on CBS at 8PM, theTVaddict.com is proud [or not-so-proud depending on how things turn out] to once again present our GUARANTEED EMMY WINNERS 2009* NOMINEES: BIG LOVE, BREAKING BAD, DAMAGES, DEXTER, HOUSE, LOST, MAD MEN. SHOULD WIN: BIG LOVE For what BIG LOVE lacks in TRUE BLOOD levels of buzz, it more than makes up for with big drama and a big talented cast. Particularly, Margene (Ginnifer Goodwin), who incidentally was totally snubbed with a lack-of-Emmy nod. WILL WIN: MAD MEN Hamm, Slattery, Moss. Yup, it’s a mad mad world, and we’re just living in it. SNUBBED: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA *theTVaddict.com does not guarantee his “winning picks.” Do not, I repeat, Do not bet the house, kids or family pet on them!

WILL WIN: 30 ROCK Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Exclusive Interview: THE BIG BANG THEORY Star Jim Parsons on his Emmy Chanc
2009-09-18 21:54:00
“Flabbergasted,” is how Jim Parsons summed up his reaction to his 2009 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series. Our theory: Parsons clearly has yet to actually watch THE BIG BANG THEORY. How else to explain his “God No!” response when this TV Addict casually suggested he might wish to consider jotting down a few thank-you’s. “It’s hard to accept that I’m actually going to go to the Emmys, let alone nominated,” explained Parsons in a recent one-on-one with the TV Addict. “It’s something I’ve watched on TV for so long and now to be attending… I know that I have to wear a tux and that’s really about as far as my brain has gone!” Something else the actor has trouble wrapping his head around is what can fans expect when everybody’s favorite theoretical physicist returns this Monday September 21 at 9:30PM on CBS (’A’ Channel in Canada) “They don’t tell me...

Oh No They Didn’t! Lance Reddick and Blair Brown Discuss Last Night’s F
2009-09-18 16:40:00
Since shape-shifters and serial killers are practically par for the course in the wonderfully wacky world of FRINGE, it should probably come as no surprise that scribes J.J. Abrams and Akiva Goldmsan found an entirely different way to shock us during last night’s second season premiere of FRINGE: Meet Nina Sharp cougar! Yes, last night’s episode may have given fans plenty to talk about, including the return of Olivia from over there (”I went somewhere … He told me something … I don’t know, but there’s something I have to do. I think that our lives may depend on it.”) and a new and improved Peter (Telling Broyles, “We’re done reacting. We’re not gonna be ‘too late’ anymore. After all, somebody’s gotta save their asses, right?”). But the biggest surprise was reserved for the unexpected kiss between two of the show’s most mysterious and elusive characters: Blair Brown ’s Nina Sharpe a...

We Interrogate FRINGE Star Lance Reddick
2009-09-17 21:54:00
Similar to that of his small screen alter ego, FRINGE star Lance Reddick is a man of few words and not surprisingly, fewer answers. What are FBI Agent Phillip Broyles true intentions this season? Where do his loyalties lie? And what’s it like on the other side? Well, these are just a few of the questions Reddick does his best to elude in this exclusive one-on-one with the TV Addict at this weekend’s FOX Fall Press Junket. Is this the season we finally learn where Agent Broyles loyalties lie? Lance Reddick: I’m not sure, but I can tell you episode six is basically a ‘Broyles episode,’ where we’ll find out more about his backstory, his relationship with his ex-wife and his relationship with Fringe Division prior to the current team. Will a closer look at Broyles backstory include some flashbacks that might flesh out the character’s motives? You’re not the first person to ask me that question. No flashbacks, but you’ll definitely le...
