HOT97 SUMMER JAM " WHO WAS THE BOSS"
2008-06-03 13:44:00 Summer Jam has built its entire rep on ridiculous moments, i.e. G-Unit starting a riot with chair-throwing in a downpour and Mobb Deep and Jay-Z getting into beef zone when Jay projected a flick of Prodigy extra dick-riding Michael Jackson's outfit, glove and all. But the Summer Jam stage has never seen anything as subversive, uncomfortable and totally bizarre as Lil Wayne's 20 minute set, apparently blasted on his own summer Js and a total amazing/scary rock star set, as in "DEAR GIANTS STADIUM, FOLLOW ME INTO MY K-HOLE, XOXO WEEZY." It started with "I'm Me," and traversed into a five-minute blues freestyle on electric guitar, which was customized with some sort of psychedelic overlay on the body. Here is an imitation of Weezy's guitar playing skills: ting, ting, ting, tonnnnnng. It was like if Daniel Johnston or Beat Happening or one of those other early '90s PNW guitar bands were allowed to play in front of 50,000 rap fans who were basically there in the first place to ... PROMOTERS SUPRISED BY BOUNTY KILLER AND MAVADO BANS
2008-04-30 17:44:00 Deejays Bounty Killer and Mavado, has been banned from entering the Guyana, the country's Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee, said yesterday. A report from the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC), quoted Rohee as saying that Bounty Killer, whose real name is Rodney Price, is known for his lyrics glorifying guns and bashing gays while Mavado is a security risk. With Jamaicans Bounty Killer and Mavado now banned from the country for security reasons the promoter of a show this weekend which was to feature the latter yesterday expressed his dismay and said the move was unfair. Mavado was scheduled to perform at an upcoming show this weekend in Linden which was being promoted by Ryan Apple but arrangements have since been made for another Jamaican, dancehall king, Beenie Man to be here instead. Apple referred to the ban as ?an unjustified and unfair move by the government that ignores the investment made?. He said government appears to be putting Mavado in a box by pointing to a ...

Bounty Killer Bottled in Guyana
2008-04-22 15:36:00 Gunfire marred the highly publicized Ignition Concert at the National Park early yesterday morning that featured a line-up of Jamaican artistes, among them the controversial Bounty Killa. The Jamaican, who has a record of homophobic tunes and glorifies guns in his music, was the closing act and he held true to form during the brief performance that was interrupted by two audio breakdowns, an unruly crowd and subsequent gunfire. Jonathan Beepat of Wildfire Productions which promoted the show told Stabroek News yesterday that police fired two warning shots to tame the crowd after Bounty Killa?s performance was twice interrupted by the audio cut-off. This could not be confirmed with the police yesterday. He said those are the only gunshots he was aware of. But gunshots rang out twice in the Park - a few minutes into Bounty Killa?s act and yet again when the show ended abruptly and patrons scurried to safety. On the second occasion, the gunshots numbered around four. Beepat said he w... More About: Killer , Guyana

Is Harry Toddler the new Ringtone King?
2008-04-16 14:16:00 Jamaican artiste, Harry Toddler has inked a major licensing deal with Bahamas Telecommunications Corporation (BaTelCo), the telecommunications giant from The Bahamas, to sell downloads of the ringtone for his number one hit, Don't Run In in that country. "They came here and shot a commercial with him as well to promote the ringtone. They were impressed with his voice, and the melody of his delivery, and so they signed him up to sell downloads of his music, this represents a potentially lucrative deal for the Blond Ras," Josef Bogdanovich revealed to One876Entertainment.com. The company also inked Tony Rebel to a similar deal. BaTelCo is a major sponsor of this year's Down Sound Records produced 'Millennium Countdown' show. Recently, in conjunction with the Swiss telecommunications company Swiss Telecom PTT, BaTelCo developed a digital satellite communication system between Switzerland and The Bahamas, two of the world's prominent financial center. Mavado Endorse Barrack Obama
2008-04-16 14:02:00 I just came across this song yesterday from one of Jamaica's biggest dancehall stars, Mavado. It's actually a remix of a huge hit he has right now. Truth be told, most of Mavado's music is gangsterish posturing but it just goes to show how deep Obama 's impact is. I also decided to included the youtube video of the Mighty Sparrow's 'Barack the Magnificent'. Now, the Mighty Sparrow is from Trinidad and regarded as the greatest calypso singer alive - he's quite at the other end of the spectrum from Mavado - he's 73, sings a completely different style of Caribbean music, lives quite at the other end of the Caribbean in the other main cultural power of the West Indies. I found it pretty amazing because you can't get two more different Caribbean artists than Mavado and Sparrow- they are also about two generations apart- Sparrow could literally be Mavado's grandfather. Not only that, music is social commentary in the Caribbean- especially calypso. When we sing about you - '... More About: Barrack Obama
Mavado free to honour his contracts
2008-04-10 13:46:00 Mavado lost his travel documents as they were taken by the court after his arrest a few weeks ago in connection to a shooting incident that happened last year. Mavado?s lawyer Antoinette Haughton-Cardenas made a submission to the courts for her client to receive back his travel documents so he can fulfill his contracted dates. We understand that among the items submitted were his contracts, a letter from his manager, and schedule for shows overseas. Mavado now doesn?t have to report to police station but his bail was increased from J$200,000 to J$500,000. Some of Mavado's upcoming shows includes The Return of the Gully Gad in Hartford CT, on April 11th,and the annual Best of the Best stage in Miami. Mariah Carey remixes "Touch My Body" with Sizzla
2008-04-09 13:54:00 Is this a match made in heaven? Mariah Carey has teamed up with none other than Sizzla Kolanji to remix her hit single "Touch My Body ." Although the remix did not find both artists together in studio, Sizzla's smooth sound rides the rhythm as he sings, ?Girl when you're feeling lonely and you need someone to touch you, to squeeze and rub your sexy body, girl I'm here to love you. When you're feeling all excited about something so special, girl I'm most delighted to give you all my loving sentimental,? before he breaks into his signature falsetto, offering a smooth listen for fans. Sizzla also had a recent collaboration with another international superstar, as he and Lil' Wayne now have a video out for their recent single together dubbed, The Only Reason. iTunes.ca pulls Buju Banton, Elephant Man and TOK songs for being Homophob
2008-04-08 13:53:00 iTunes Canada has removed several songs it claimed to be laced with anti-gay lyrics from its online store, in response to a campaign led by Egale and Stop Murder Music. The songs ? by Jamaican dancehall artists Buju Banton , Elephant Man and TOK ? contain lyrics that advocate the killing of gays. "iTunes is exercising its corporate responsibility by pulling this murder music and raising the bar for other retailers and distributors to do the same," says Akim Larcher, founder of SMM. He calls iTune's decision a victory for the gay community in Canada and in the Caribbean iTunes has also gone a step further by removing entire albums that contain the offending songs, not just the songs themselves. Elephant Man's track Log On contains the lyrics "Dance wi a dance and a bun out a freaky man" (Join our dance and let's burn out the queer man). The album of the same name can't be downloaded on iTunes, but all of Elephant Man's other albums are available. "We are extremely pleased wi... More About: Songs , Itunes

JAY Z scores $150 Million Deal with Live Nation
2008-04-03 05:32:00 In a move that reflects the anarchy sweeping the music business, the superstar rapper Jay-Z, who released his latest album to lukewarm sales five months ago, is on the verge of closing a deal with a concert promoter that rivals the biggest music contracts ever awarded. Jay-Z plans to depart his longtime record label, Def Jam, for a roughly $150 million package with the concert giant Live Nation that includes financing for his own entertainment venture, in addition to recordings and tours for the next decade. The pact, expected to be finalized this week, is the most expansive deal yet from Live Nation, which has angled to compete directly with the industry?s established music labels in a scrum over the rights to distribute recordings, sell concert tickets, market merchandise and control other aspects of artists? careers. But the arrangement would also position Live Nation to participate in a range of new deals with Jay-Z, one of music?s most entrepreneurial stars, whose past ven... More About: Deal , Million , Scores

Donovan Bennett, known to the masses as Don Corleon, has been putting his indelible signature on the top sounds emanating from Jamaica to the world, and is best known for crafting chart-topping tunes for dancehall icons Sean Paul and Elephant Man, but that's just the beginning of his realm. He's produced Billboard hits for pop princess Rihanna, and talented R&B mainstay Keyshia Cole, who regularly treks to Kingston, Jamaica to work with Don in his Vendetta Studios. In fact, Don reveals the track featured on Girlicious was first composed for Cole. "I made it for Keyshia's last album but it didn't make it, but Ron Fair at Geffen Records loved the track and wanted to save it for something good. So I got the call and went to L.A. Why Mavado wrote "On the Rock"
2008-03-17 15:00:00 No tune has loomed over 2008 for me more than Mavado?s ?On the Rock ? on Baby G?s ?Mission? Rhythm. Now, three months in I?m hardly breaking news on how big this tune is: the tune?s just so incredible I feel the need to publicly declare my total infatuation. ?On the Rock? has many of those qualities and more, and I guess it?s symbolic of a craving I have for more vocal, emotive, colourful music right now. The backstory to ?On the Rock? is that Mavado?s birthday party last year got raided by the Jamaican police and soldiers in helicopters. Angry, he turned to gospel to express his frustration. The result is something even the addition of Jay-Z bars can?t improve. Call it twilight, magical balance or dynamic tension, I?ve been drawn to Mavado since I first heard ?Amazing Grace? last year. What?s so remarkable about him is the sweetness of his voice and the bitterness of his message. No one else could sing about ?[bone] marrow flying? and make it sound so intense. While I haven?t ... MAVADO HEADLINES " SOUL REBELLION" 2008
2008-02-25 20:35:00 ...ANY WAYYYYYYYYY... David "Mavado" Brooks will be setting his sights on doing good when he headlines the 2008 Soul Rebellion event on March 11th in Negril, Jamaica. The recent success of his debut album "Gangsta For Life: The Symphony of David Brooks" back in 2007 (VP Records), Mavado has since shared the fruits of his labour within his community by launching his "Connect Jamaica" charity, where he donates computers to local schools. This made him the perfect candidate for the face of Soul Rebellion - the festival with a cause, where proceeds from each fund raising event are invested back into the local economy in Jamaica. By targeting the spring break crowd, Soul Rebellion hosts a number of unique events and concerts that are geared towards raising funds to help rebuild local schools and strengthen local communities, long after the tourists depart. An investigation led to the arrest of the entertainer, who was charged with rape. Deva Bratt as another charge of carnal abuse against him, also involving a 14-year-old girl. Will Munga Attack Deva Brat While in Prison ?
More articles from this author:2008-02-20 19:12:00 Over the past few months there has been an ongoing lyrical confrontation between the Gangsta Ras, Munga and Portmore Empire's first lieutenant Deva Brat . The feud got so intense at one point it even escalated into and all out fist fight at Stone Love's 35th Anniversary. The fracas almost turn fatal when a knife was pulled by Munga who was eventually restrained before both men were removed from the stage. Now that the new year is in full swing it seems there is no sign of a truce in sight as just recently both entertainers took a swipe at each other on the Night Creature Riddim with Munga accusing Deva of living in a 'lue' (a popular Dancehall slang used to denote someone living a fictitious lifestyle) and Deva without skipping a beat returned the favour and said Munga a cuss because he knows he going to bite the dust (afraid of being defeated in the lyrical battle, hence his reason for all the arguments). However, though the accusations by both men may not necessarily be true, ... More About: Prison , Attack 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 |
