Prunus Girl Manga (????????) Guest Review by Tomo K.
2012-01-07 01:19:00 Today is an extra specially lucky day for all of us - we have a new Guest Review er! Tomo K. has graciously offered to write up a review of Matsumoto Tomoki's Prunus Girl . You may remember that Tomo told us about this manga, which runs in Square Enix's Monthly GanGan Joker last month. I hope you'll all extend a warm Okazu welcome to Tomo! Kind words in the comments fields will be appreciated. Prunus Girl (????????) begins on the day when the result of Maki's senior high entrance exam is posted. He meets a cute girl and it looks like a fated encounter, but the girl, Aikawa, later turns out to be his classmate and an ??? (otoko-no-ko: a male who looks/dresses/acts completely female). I found it amusing how quick the other students adapt to Aikawa, with the girls treating him like a female friend, and the guys accepting him because he's cute. Even the teachers let him wear a girl's uniform at school, because what he is wearing is a school uniform after all. Aikawa seems to li... More About: Manga
Comiket and New Year's Swag
2012-01-06 00:44:00 For fun, we unbagged/boxed all of our stuff this time, even the wife's piles of stickers and postcards. Click on the picture for a larger image. Warratte! Sotomura-san (????????) Manga, Volume 1
2012-01-05 16:09:00 I jokingly refer to a certain set of magazines as "Manga Time Kirara (and all its little wizards)" around my house. When, mere hours ago, I stood in a store and faced down the many, many Manga Time magazines, I was reminded why. There are a truckload of these, ever so slightly dissimilar magazines that, when looked at as a whole are all pretty much identical. And because Yuri is on the list of acceptable fetishes for this particular set of just-slightly-dissimilar 4-koma manga, many of the series found in the pages of these many magazines have some Yuri. For instance, Morita-san ha Mukuchi, which effectively has one joke (Mayu doesn't talk) and two possible Yuri characters. I picked up Warratte! Sotomura-san (????????) by Minamori Minamo, expecting one joke and no Yuri, and was right about one of those things. Sotomura Natsuki is a very nice girl, who likes typical girly things but, has a very unfortunate smile. Unfortunate in the sense that when she "smiles," she's l...

Comiket Day 3 and New Year's Day
2012-01-02 00:00:00 Comiket Day 3 was a short, to-the-point shopping day. Day 3 at Comiket is always ero-day and, as a result, the lines are longer, the crowds are bigger and more claustrophobic. I tend to think of it as a ride made out of people. ^_^ Pro tip: At winter Comiket, the smell is less AND winter coats provide padding to ward off bruising. We headed straight for Atelier Myabi, because a year without a Fujieda Miyabi calendar is a sad year. The wife commented that the dining room just wouldn't look right without one. We threaded our way through the East Halls until we reached our only other objective, Junk-Lab and Raku-gun. This year's Junk Lab doujinshi is, according to the note in the back, the last. With three pro gigs, Takemiya-sensei just doesn't have time, I bet. Good for her. And we stopped by Himekawa Akira's table in order to meet the artists for the Arabic-language manga, The Gold Ring. That was very lovely. We lunched with Ana and Kazami Akira-san, a very nice gentleman who f...
Top Ten Yuri List of 2011
2012-01-01 00:34:00 As always, this list is a conglomeration of people, things, companies and random items of note. This list is not subject to sense or sensibility, it's just whatever pops into my head as being notable. Honorable Mention) Princess Knight - This story isn't Yuri, but it created the enduring and popular Girl Princess trope, and for that, we really need to thank Vertical for publishing it in English. Without Sapphire's two hearts, we would not have had Haruka, or Utena, or Oscar or Erminia. Thanks Vertical for giving us a chance to read this manga classic! 10) MangaTime Kirara/Comic High/IKKI - Not Yuri magazines, but more and more supportive of Yuri (or Yuri-ish) narratives and sometimes, even a lesbian or two. To some extent, the popularity of Yuri is driven as much by these series, as by anything in one of the all-Yuri manga magazines, because these magazines may well reach a wider audience. In any case, without these, we would not have Poor Poor Lips, GIRL FRIENDS, Sasamekikoto... More About: List
Winter Comiket 2011
2011-12-30 08:44:00 In a very sudden last-minute decision, the wife and I ran off to Tokyo to be here for Comiket and New Year's Day. This afternoon is the first chance I've had to play catch up to let you know where I am or what's happening. I took a very few pictures already that I want to share: In the parking lot next to our hotel is this Type-Moon itasha. The sigil lines are painted in silver, but the flash made them pop out. We woke up the first morning and came downstairs to see the line for Comiket running right past our hotel: When we got in, we headed straight for the JESUS DRUG table and for the first time, I was able to meet Hayate x Blade creator, Hayashiya Shizuru-sensei. I fangirled all over her, poor thing. We found a little Marimite section, and then just threaded our way around all the halls. The wife found some doujinshi she liked and we headed back to the hotel to crash and burn. In a crazy coincidence, my commanding officer Ana is staying in the hotel around the corn... Top Ten Yuri Manga of 2011
2011-12-25 23:43:00 In stark contrast to last week's top ten anime list, I liked doing this one...and never before have I liked doing it as much as I have this year. The ONLY downside was having to whittle this list down to ten entries (and, as you'll see, I didn't really.) Of course as always, you may all feel free to add your additions or subtractions in the comments. ^_^ It is with great pleasure that I present Okazu's Top Ten Yuri Manga of 2011... Honorable Mention) Collectors - Nishi UKO's delightful series about Shinobu and Takako, two women who share passion for collecting completely different, mutually exclusive, things. This is the after happily-ever-after story I'm always looking for and I just adore it. Shinobu and Takako do not have a perfect relationship, but they have a good relationship. They and their friends are very real, and people I would totally have over for lunch. When it gets collected into a volume, it's Number 1. Right now, it's just disparate chapters in Rak...
Okazu Letter to Santa
2011-12-24 16:42:00 Dear Santa , I don't believe in you as such, but I believe in other fictitious beings, so I thought I'd write a letter to you and see how it works out. I think I've been a pretty good girl all year long, and deserve a few special things. You don't have to give me these by tomorrow, I'd be happy enough with any of them announced in 2012. So, no pressure. Here's what I want for 2012: Sailor Moon Anime Re-release - What I *want* is a full reboot of the series, with a rewrite that allows Haruka and Michiru to be more overtly together, but I'll settle for a simple US re-release. One with proper sound, and the LD extras, including the interviews with the VAs and the Christmas special. Also, the movies and two specials. You don't need to give me physical extras, but if a company reallllly wanted to, I can tell you what the perfect extra would be. Each season box set should come with a piece of the Eternal Moon Rod. If you buy all 5 seasons, you have the most elusive o... More About: Letter
Yuri Drama CD: Ame-iro Kouchkan Kandan (????????) Blue Christmas
2011-12-24 05:43:00 Christmas is coming and the Ame-iro Kouchakan is filled to the brim with cheerful, energetic young women. Not that anyone is complaining, but...where did they all come from? Sarasa really wants to know what the deal is, but in the meantime, she and Seriho are doing everything they can to keep up with demand. More important than the mystery of why their tea house is so popular all of a sudden, is the much great problem of Christmas. They did a special for Tanabata, and another for Halloween, and Sarasa is torturing herself trying to come up with a super-special special for Christmas. But first, before all of this, we have yet another thing that must be dealt with! Sarasa's college roommate, Saiyuki, is visited by an old friend, Shuuri. There's some tension between them and it seems awfully likely to blossom into something more, if they can just get a push. EVERYONE in the series gives them the push they need. Which allows us all to deal with the issue of where the hell are all ... More About: Christmas , Drama , Blue
K-ON! Anime, Volume 4 (English)
2011-12-23 14:29:00 My day started a little rough, so I thought that I more than deserved a moment to wallow in the pure fun of the K-ON! anime. Volume 4 was the perfect thing to put me in a good mood (although I think I'm a little tired of "Fuwa Fuwa Time" for a while...) In Volume 4, the girls perform for the second time at the school festival, and we learn that Yui's flakey-ness is a lifetime achievement. And we get two bonus episodes in which they spend some random winter days and perform their first show outside school. I've said it before, if you don't like K-ON!, there's nothing I can say to change you to suddenly liking it. If you do like it, there's nothing I can say that you haven't already thought for yourself. "Gosh, Yui's a flake," "Azusa's cute when she's all blushy," "Why has no one killled Ritsu yet?" "Why is Mugi not the Governor of Tokyo?" I have no doubt that you've thought these things as well. Well...okay, maybe not the last thing. If you've thought anythin... More About: Anime , English
Yuri Manga: Rakuen Le Paradis (?? Le Paradis), Volume 7
2011-12-22 01:26:00 Hrm. So, if anyone asked me how to build a Josei magazine that men might also read, I'd say, get lots of top names to draw stories that are refreshingly different in that they are pretty much the same as everywhere else, except that the women are slightly more in control of their lives. Add in some Yuri, in the form of already-proven artists, and then mix in some stories about guys. I'm not saying that's what Rakuen Le Paradis (?? Le Paradis) had in mind, but that's what it's doing. Volume 7 hits the Yuri fandom hard right at the front of the magazine, with Nishi UKO's "Collectors," which begins with a backstory about Takako in high school. The bridge between these two chapters made me extremely happy, with frames of Shinobu and Takako playing with each other's hair in a beautifully intimate scene as they talk. This is exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for - adult intimacy, without it being porn. This series is pretty much the series I keep talking about wanting to read... More About: Manga
Yuri Manga: Poor Poor Lips (????LIPS), Volume 3
2011-12-20 23:27:00 At the end of Poor Poor Lips , Volume 2, we left Nako and Ren living in poverty. At the beginning of Poor Poor Lips (????LIPS), Volume 3, nothing has changed. Except that with summer being so terribly hot, and them not owning a refrigerator or even a fan, much less an air conditioner, life is becoming intolerable. When they get a bonus from Fukui-san, they are at least able to buy a second futon for Ren...but immediately realize that they've grown comfortable sleeping together. The year passes with small victories and small losses, but that's not what's bothering Ren. Yes, Ren is physically uncomfortable, but what's really gnawing at her is the debt Nako seems to be eternally paying off. What could possibly be the reason? When she can't take it any more, she finally asks...and is told a truly terrible story. When Nako was a teen, her parents died, leaving her with nothing. A man approached her after their funeral to let her know that he paid for the funeral. When she got olde... More About: Manga
K-ON! Manga, Volume 3 and 4 (English)
2011-12-19 21:47:00 Volume 3 and Volume 4 of K-ON! primarily deal with the girls' second and final years in high school. They perform at the school festival, spend lazy days avoiding practicing and drinking tea, busting each other's chops, and having fun together. They hug Azusa, they pick on Sawako-sensei, they sometimes even study a bit or practice a song. I said of the Japanese volumes that they were, like Mugi's tea and cakes, light afternoon refreshment, not meat and drink. There is no substance here, no wisdom for the ages, except perhaps that high school days don't really change much when you look back at them, no matter where you're from. I mean, yes, I must have done a ton of homework - I remember having homework to do every day. I remember filling out college applications too. But when I think of high school, the things I remember are not homework, tests and papers, but things like memorizing Little Riding Hood's dialogue with the Big Bad Wolf...in German. Top (?) Ten Yuri Anime of 2011
2011-12-18 19:27:00 I hate doing this list. Have I ever mentioned that? Yuri and anime don't mix well too often. The best Yuri manga will never, ever become anime and the anime that is popular that includes Yuri is so...blecch...most of the time. This year I give up. This isn't a top 10 list, it's 10 series of interest - for one reason or another - to the Okazu audience list. I'm not even saying they are Yuri series. It's just things that some Yuri fans might care about, or not. As always, feel free to tell me how wrong I am in the comments, you always do. (^_^)b 10. Koi Hime Musou - This is on the list to round it out to 10 and because there is a smidgen of Yuri in it. It sucked in every other way. 9. Sound of the Sky Yeah, there's pretty much no Yuri here that we didn't make up in our heads. So sue me. Moe fans liked it, wrote and drew lots of pictures and stories that paired characters up and it made them happy. So shut up with your sensible objections. 8. K-ON! Same as with So... Yuri Network News - December 17, 2011
2011-12-17 15:37:00 Hello Yuri Network ! Some fun news ahead. Yuri Drama CD Katherine H. wanted to remind you that, should you buy the second volume of Ame-iro Kouchakan Kandan, with the Drama CD, Blue Christmas, (which was great! Review forthcoming) there is a second bonus Drama CD, Maple Carol (which was also great!) *** Yuri Anime Namori's Yuru Yuri is getting a second anime season. I'm not surprised and again note that this was, clearly, exactly the right series for Comic Yuri Hime to pick for it's anime debut. The manga has gone on 8 volumes, so clearly there are people who like it. Nothing else in Comic Yuri Hime has run more than 3 volumes. The English dubbed trailer for the Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica anime release is up for your viewing pleasure. *** Yuri Manga Tomo K writes in to let us know about Matsumoto Tomoki's ???????? Girly Comic, Volume 3 (English)
2011-12-17 00:30:00 Volume 1 was getting Otra and Winter sorted out as a couple and Volume 2 was them dealing with being a couple...so what on earth could Volume 3 of Girly even be about? That's a darn good question and the book itself had a really hard time getting around to answering it. Volume 3 starts with 4-color pages, that probably took a very, very long time to draw, and the art is actually quite decent. But you know, I don't look at the art in a comic, except as an afterthought. (I know, I know, reading the words first, then looking at the pictures is a really strange way to read a comic, but it's what I do. So sue me.) So the art is sort of wasted on me when the story is focused, basically, on there being no story. Or, no story as far as we, the readers are concerned. There *is* a story of course, and eventually we get around to being told it, then it ends and we all have a good laugh and move on. Volume 3 has some of the best individual comics Josh drew for Girly. I probably laughed ou... More About: Comic , English
Batwoman Comic, Issues 1-4 (English)
2011-12-15 02:53:00 As a present for being a good girl all year and working hard at my three jobs, I bought myself a tablet as a replacement travel computer. Objecting as I do to Apple's content-censoring decisions, I chose a Samsung Galaxy Tablet, which is now named Tabibito. I spend the first few days getting the hang of the interface, downloading a few apps and rearranging the screen the way I like it. You know, normal stuff. Once I got myself up and running, I loaded up with a bunch of books - first things first. (Over My Dead Body by Nero Wolfe and The Calculus Diaries by Jennifer Ouellette, in case you care.) Then I decided that, if I had the chance, I'd try my hand at reading Batwoman as a digital download. As I've said before, I never was a DC comic reader. And I've been out of American comics for a very long time now. This was as much a way to test out the tablet as to read the comic, but what the heck, while I went through all the steps, I might as well get a review out of it. ^_^ Comi... Revolutionary Girl Utena Anime Box Set - Volume 2, Disk 2 (English)
2011-12-13 23:02:00 Revolutionary Girl Utena, Volume 2, Disk 2. This is where it gets really good. Up to this point, the Black Rose arc has seemed superficially similar to the first arc. Kanae's rage against Anthy seems overreacting, but we really don't know much about Kanae or Anthy, and hey, we're all creeped out by the portrayal of psychoanalysis in the form of Mikage's Freudian elevator. And Kozue...we've written her off multiple times already. She's not jealous of Anthy, just of her brother. Bro-con, ho hum. But. Now. Shiori is here. Shiori, who sought to hurt Juri, to tarnish her shine, because she was too perfect, too shining. Oh yeah, fandom loves to hate Shiori. But look at it from her side for a moment. Haven't we all had a friend who is popular, talented, attractive and haven't we all wanted, just once, to be better than them in something? Remember this particular moment of jealousy and pain. It will be back. In the meantime, we suffer as Juri tortures herself over feelings ... More About: Anime , English
Lesbian Short Stories: Hanagaran (???)
2011-12-13 01:52:00 Last up of everything I picked up in Tokyo in September was a short story collection called Hanagaran (???), by Nakayama Kaho. In the collection are at least two stories about lesbian or bisexual women, but they were so unsatisfying that I stopped after the second. The characters were broken, slightly sypathetic, but were making decisions I just couldn't empathize with. In the first story, a lesbian meets and sleeps with a married woman on a summer festival night. Although they promise to get together again, they don't until a chance meeting brings them in contact with one another. They have an affair, but the lesbian wants more. She wants to be able to spend a long life with the other woman, and gets a tattoo of a crane to symbolize her wish. Probably terrified by her lover's intensity (although we never see any reaction at all) the married woman returns to her life. The lesbian stalks her a bit, then walks away from the whole thing. In the second story, two women breakup ugly... More About: Stories , Lesbian , Short Stories
Yuri Manga: Renai Joshika (???????), Volume 2
2011-12-12 00:25:00 In Volume 1 of Renai Joshika (???? ???) we were introduced to Arisu and Saki, two women who work at a bridal services company. Arisu and Saki fall in love, as one of the two major plots in the first volume. In Volume 2, they are still going out, and things are looking very rosy for them both. Until Saki's former girlfriend comes back into her life. Kimiko is a manga artist and, so overwhelmed was she by deadlines, she simply stopped communicating. Now that her project is done, she's ready to pick up where she and Saki left off. Only Saki, after hearing nothing from Kimiko for so long, has moved on. In the middle of the book, we turn to a side story about two other staff members - Ai and Sae. I really liked Ai, because she was the most genuinely grumpy, ill-tempered character I'd ever read in a manga. But then she falls in love with Hato-chan and got less grumpy and less interesting. We then turn back to Saki and Arisu. Arisu offers Saki the option of seeing both of them, but S... More About: Manga

Megami Lily Magazine
2011-12-10 02:38:00 So, I'm not sure if you know about Megami magazine or not. It's pretty much a full-color anime-focused magazine, carefully crafted to serve the needs of the creepiest LFBs, with lots of full color pictures of rosy-cheeked school age girls presenting their animated asses, crotches and whatever breasts they have to full view of the readers who, presumably really enjoy looking at pictures of cartoon characters' crotches, etc. Megami also includes large, full-color posters of pantsless cartoon characters, cartoon characters in wet, clingy skimpy bathing suits and with whipped cream on their faces. To be blunt, Megami is not to my taste. But when they put together a Yuri-focused Megami Lily , I had to at least give it a look. Not surprisingly, it's the /u/ of magazines. The first 30 pages is filled with Yuru Yuri, and then it's a pretty predictable series of moe-focused Yuri; Strike Witches, Saki, Tamayura, Makenki, To Aru Kagaku no Railgun, A Channel, Hidamari Sketch of cour... My Little Pony - Friendship is Magic Cartoon (English)
2011-12-09 01:55:00 Today, we're talkin' ponies. At New York Comic-Con several people I consider to be good friends insisted I simply must watch the new My Little Pony - Friendship is Magic series. These are people whose opinions and sanity I trust so, when the opportunity presented itself, I began to watch the first episode. While I watched that first episode I live-blogged on Twitter, which was pretty hilarious all on its own, as people started to react to my comments. Zac Bertschy of ANN called it spot on, when he said that everyone would tell me that I had to watch at least 6 episodes to really get into it. (Meta commentary FTW!) I admit that a few episodes in, I was begining to question my friendships with those aforementioned people. But indeed, around Episode 6, something happened. The dialogue, which always had a bit of snark, turned extra snarky. When they trotted a Pinky and The Brain reference out, I realized that we had been given a series as close as were are gonna get to the old Bugs ... More About: Cartoon , English

Kaname no Etoile Manga
2011-12-06 22:09:00 Kaname saw Miki-sama perform ballet and immediately decided that she would try to enter that refined, beautiful world. So, with only a few years of ballet classes under her belt, she transfers into the elite school at which Miki-sama trains. This is the setup for the title story of Kaname no Etoile (????????) Inexplicably, Miki-sama encourages Kaname, which causes her to be bullied by the second-best student Sugiura-san and her fans. To make matters worse, when Kaname is suddenly (and also quite inexplicably) assigned to dance in the competition with Miki-sama, Sugiura is (rightfully, I think) enraged. But Miki-sama continues to encourage Kaname, despite the other girl's lack of confidence. They are assigned to dance a pas-de-deux from Swan Lake, Kaname as Odile, with Miki-sama taking the role of Odette. (Which is an interesting idea.) Everyone, even Kaname, is shocked at this choice. Sugiura-san challenges Kaname to a danceoff, which Kaname wins. Sugiura backs off, but the worst... More About: Manga
Girly Comic, Volume 2 - Girly & Friends (English)
2011-12-06 01:54:00 I'm still making my way through Josh Lesnick's collection of Girly and find myself closing the pages of Volume 2 of the new collection with some reluctance. In Volume 2, Otra and Winter's adventures become more epic, and involve way more people in town than they did previously. In good chapters, this has the effect of giving Cutetown a more 3-D feel. In less good chapters, it feels like a Benny Hill routine. Luckily there are more good than bad chapters. Highlights of volume two are: the rather inexplicable appearance of Collette, Winter's half-sister, the resolution of the Chupacabre story (which turns out to be kind of unpredictably sweet) and the beginning middle and end of HappyCo, the manufacturer of arch-enemies. As I write these down, I'm having a hard time finding things to say about each one...but they were all entertaining when I read them, honest! Well, except for Collette, who I still don't know why she's in the story. Some of the side characters are intriguing... More About: Comic , Friends , English
Once Upon A Time...Or, How to Make a Great LGBT Comic (and Contest!)
2011-12-05 13:46:00 Today I intended to write a review of an indie comic I supported through a crowdsource program. I thought, well, even if it wasn't to my taste, there ought to be some good qualities right? Well...no, there weren't. I was appalled through and through at how utterly sub-par the conception and execution were. Obviously, I won't be reviewing (or even naming) the book, because that wouldn't help anyone. What I can do, though, is talk about why I felt the comic was so underwhelming. Because that can be generalized into a discussion of representation of lesbians and gays in comics and manga. And that is certainly worth discussing. The more I thought about it, the more I thought today we might - together - start to create a tutorial for not only independent comic artists, but also large companies on some things to consider when approaching diversity, and LGBT representation in comics as whole. So, with that, let me talk first about creating a really good story. A really good story do... More About: Contest , Comic , Time , Great , Make
Yuri Network News - December 3, 2011
More articles from this author:2011-12-03 16:00:00 Yuri Anime ANN reports that Universal Studios Japan is hosting the K-ON! cast accompanying an installation of life-sized (but not realistically proportioned) statues of the characters. The K-ON! movie debuted today in Japan yesterday. ^_^ I'm pretty sure I heard the screaming over here.
