Mix Taping 101

There are a few things to keep in mind while selecting songs for a mixtape. The Golden Rule isBalance.Of course, first you gotta know who you're making the mix tape for. More importantly, you gotta know their taste. If its your dad or mum or someone older, generally you'd fill it up with oldies, and not stuff like Primus(unless your dad is cool like that). If its for someone special, ah.. there's the tricky part. Research has got to be done about what songs that person likes, what bands. Mixtapes should have themes and not a random bunch of songs thrown in. They need to be purposeful. Which is where balance comes in. A typical mixtape will generally attempt to accomplish this(in this order):Have good songs so it'll stay in that person's CD playerCarry a particular message(s)Have distinct properties to remind the listener of who made the tapeWhich is where balance comes in. By far one of my favorite mixes, cause I prepared it pretty nicely. It had a properly designed cover and all. Its also a favourite with me because it was simple, and the theme was quite happy. It was about sunny days, not the kind with blistering heat causing heat strokes, but you know, happy sunny days, with puffy clouds against a sky blue sky. Today's excursion to Red Box Karaoke was pretty cool. first time at a karaoke... i normally avoid these places like the plague. But some interesting discoveries sorta impressed me.for one thing... the selection songs. Barry Manilow, Westlife, Backstreet Boys, Savage Garden, and other pop musics aside... I was pleasantly surprised to find stuff for... I SHIT YOU NOT... Feist... Rilo Kiley... Death Cab... Relient K... Athlete... Damien Rice... Something Corporate... and more. Wat the.... right?

~ The Girl I Can't Forget by Fountains of WayneIts pretty disturbing... that I listen to Futures and Bleed American more than I'm listening to Chase This Light. Bleed American is an all time favourite for a very easy reason. In this album, a number of tracks, My Sundown and Authority Song and heck yeah, Hear You Me. He sorta pulls off a Damien Rice here, blending his cool laidback vocals with frickin Rachel Haden. Rachel Haden, who's sister is Petra Haden. You just cannot go wrong when there are Hadens in your album and in your songs. Her vocals are just entrancing and just like her sister, just leaves you hungry for so much more. Its a pity Jimmy didn't continue this trend la. For now... I'm stuck to Bleed American's perfect mix of mengsengmangatkan songs, cheeky youthful anthems and of course, obligatory songs about life, love, hope... the future. ~ A Lack of Color by Death Cab for CutieProbably one of the most depressing songs there is, and a fitting end to the epic Transatlanticism. Its one of those songs in denial, that sound really upbeat and happy, but in fact are masquerading as melancholica. Jimmy's Chase This Light is out and thank God for torrents... First impression's are pretty bleak. They sound so forgettable and generic. But I'll give it more tries, for two things. One, they're Jimmy Eat World. ~ We Intertwined by The Hush SoundIts TV season and TV season is AMAZING. How I Met Your Mother has begun. And it is AWESOME. Watched I think like 6 episodes last night at Zach's, ended up staying till 2 to watch till the latest episode which was just released yesterday. i swear, the conclusion to season 2 will BLOW YOUR NUTS UP(or eggs assuming you're female). In terms of music, How I Met Your Mother scores with me.So far, it has won supreme BrowniBarney points for its showcase on music. They lack in quantity, but they compensate in quality. Don't expect music thrown in your face all the time ala Smallville or One Tree Hill, the music comes pretty subtly. Belle and Sebastian makes an appearance, Mozella shows up discreetly in one of the episodes, and for the fatality killer move, FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE. Oh and also Decemberists.Well thats that, and speaking of other shows like Heroes and Smallville, here's my thoughts on whats to come. Check it, we get nearly the entire Justice Lea...

~ Night Drive by Jimmy Eat WorldIs it just me or is everyone else helplessly anticipating Jimmy Eat World's Chase This Light? Together with Stars, these are my most anticipated albums this year. Night Drive is an awesome track to have around. It manages to sound sappy and romantic without being gay at the same time, which is one feat most bands need to learn. Easy to say hard to master. Yeah sure, some of the tracks on Futures are forgettable, but the excellent quality of tracks like this and Nothingwrong, omhydog, Nothingwrong is one nasty sucker of a rock song. Guitar solos and terrifying riffs abound!I guess I'm so bored with songs now... I really have such a limited pool of songs that can hold my attention for long. Mellow songs make me impatient, rock songs sometimes sound so much alike, indie manages to get on my nerves with their erraticity, melancholic songs are nearly nonexistent from my library and where the heck are all my happy songs!
