Indian cricket bonanza is massive hit
2008-06-02 09:31:00 The great Indian summer blockbuster has ended with a nail biting climax. In many ways, Sunday night's final of the Indian Premier League (IPL), cricket's most expensive and hyped carnival, mirrored vintage Bollywood fare. An unfancied, cut price team (Rajasthan), led by an ageing, semi-retired spin bowling wizard (Shane Warne), beat a pricey, aggressive rival (Chennai), led by one of the highest paid players in the game and Indian cricket's poster boy (MS Dhoni). It was the triumph of the underdog over the rich and resourceful and it went down to the wire (a last-ball win). And like in those films, some high-wire entertainment preceded and interspersed the serious business of cricket. Kinetic kitsch Starlets gyrated in various costumes to showcase "various cultures of India". Fire dancers, acrobats, contortionists, and guitarists and violinists gave the show a 'global' feel. The pyrotechnics were spectacular. The entertainment was Indiana Jones meets home-grow... More About: Cricket , Indian Cricket
Onscreen smoking ban: Bollywood's disapproving stance
2008-06-02 09:25:00 The Indian film fraternity is yet to be convinced about banning scenes showing tobacco consumption. Filmmakers continue to express concern over Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss’ incessant furore over onscreen smoking the minister has been hitting out at the biggest of Bollywood bigwigs like Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan on the issue. Many feel such a ban will curb their creativity and that the government must seek other measures to dissuade people even though, according to some estimates, around 14% of students in India consume tobacco. ‘Heyy Babyy’ director Sajid Khan told: “I strongly oppose any ban that restricts freedom - do you really think people smoke because film stars smoke on screen and that people drink because we are shown drinking in films? Does terrorism happen because of films? I don’t think so. Films are meant to entertain, nobody takes them so seriously. I strongly oppose a ban.” Ditto for director Ravi Chopra who said: ... Long list of newcomers knocking on Bollywood's door
2008-06-02 09:23:00 It is raining newcomers with the list of wannabe cine stars growing by the day. After the likes of Mimoh Chakraborty and Sikander Kher, ready to bow in Bollywood this summer are Harman Baweja, Imran Khan, and Amita Pathak. While as many as three actors opened their innings on Bollywood Boulevard this Friday, the most significant debut was of Sikander, son of versatile and acclaimed actors Anupam and Kiron. Critics have given his acting prowess the thumbs up in "Woodstock Villa" that released on Friday. Sikander, who has been working in the industry since the age of 15, has also gone for acting workshops to hone his acting skills. A clear pointer that the industry is short of saleable stars and is flush with cash is that Sikander already has another film completed and ready for release. His next is "Summer 2007" by director Suhail Tatari that is likely to hit the silver screen in mid-June. The film also stars Gul Panag, Ashutosh Rana and Sachin Khedekar, among ... Bollywood turns obsessive!
2008-05-31 08:07:00 Being in love can be bliss. But what happens when the love of your life loves you a little too much for comfort? Seeking or showering constant attention from/on your partner can be quite suffocating. Either way, certain lines, under the pretext of jealousy or suspicion, are never meant to be crossed. Even the seemingly infallible Bollywood stars have their share of grey days and blunders. While the grapevine is abuzz with rumours of Saif Ali Khan getting a tad too close for girlfriend Kareena's comfort, Jannat heroine Sonal Chauhan is still recovering from the public humiliation she faced at the hands of her beau. Previously too, Salman Khan's violent escapades with ex-flame Aishwarya Rai Bachchan made headlines. Art imitates life in larger-than proportions. And so, on-screen possessiveness has been effectively exaggerated in several movies. Be it Raj Kapoor and Rajesh Khanna's jealousy-inflicted husbands in Andaaz and Aap Ki Kasam or Raj Babbar and Amjad Khan's bad-boy obs...
Who is the next Bollywood queen?
2008-05-31 08:05:00 A couple of years ago, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Rani Mukerji and Preity Zinta were the ruling troika of queen bees in Bollywood . Almost overnight, you have new favourites Kareena Kapoor and Katrina Kaif being labelled as the soon-to-be queens, thanks to their box-office successes in recent months. Rani, who’s had a bad innings last year ( Ta Ra Rum Pum and Laaga Chunari Mein Daag ), was tinseltown’s blue-eyed girl until her films crashed at the box-office. Rumours of her marriage to Aditya Chopra didn’t go down well with the audience either. Close rival Preity seems to have shifted gear to meaningful films and has become a franchisee owner of IPL, giving her no time for films. The Bachchan bahu has wrapped up for Sarkar Raj co-starring hubby Abhishek, walked the red carpet in Cannes Film Festival again and is exploring fresher avenues in Hollywood. In such a scenario, it is inevitable that filmmakers would move on to newer stars who can offer bulk dates, commitm... More About: Queen
IPL becomes Bollywood's latest blockbuster
2008-05-31 07:53:00 The stifling 95 degree heat in Mumbai this weekend cannot be purely put down to the onset of the southern Indian summer. The self-satisfied glow of the organisers of the hugely successful Indian Premier League must also be ratcheting up the temperature a degree or two. Built on a mountain of cash from some of India's richest individuals, the IPL began 44 days ago with a vision for the future that seemed almost as crackpot as the idea that India would boast one of the world's booming economies.Suspicion and scepticism greeted its beginning, but ever since Brendon McCullum set alight the opening match, the tournament has gathered strength and exceeded expectations. "It has been an unprecedented blockbuster," said one of the franchise owners, Vijay Mallya - and his Bangalore team bombed dismally. The tournament culminates in the IPL play-off weekend, ending with tomorrow's final, where the organisers will be desperate to show the world their gleaming new toy. VIPs gathered... I still learn from Shah Rukh: Rani
2008-05-30 07:48:00 Shah Rukh Khan tops her list of favourites. After a career spanning 12 years and 40 films, Shah Rukh is still the man who holds "a special place" in Rani Mukerji's professional life. "I was considered a newcomer in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, but Shah Rukh never let me feel like one. The treatment he gave in spite of his superstar status then overwhelmed me," Rani, who made her debut with Raja Ki Aayegi Baarat in 1996, said. She said Shah Rukh had always guided her in the right direction and she had gained a lot from him. "I respect his dedication and the extra effort he puts towards his work. I still learn a lot from him," Rani adds.. The two have acted together in several films, including hits like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Chalte Chalte and Veer-Zaara. They were also together in the critically-acclaimed offbeat film Paheli, which was based on a short story written by Vijayadan Detha. When asked about her rapport with Saif Ali Khan,... 2008-05-30 07:44:00 Katrina Kaif has just returned from Egypt after shooting a song with her favourite co-star, Akshay Kumar, for the keenly awaited SINGH IS KINNG. And while Katrina is delighted with the way the song has shaped up, she is even more charmed by Egypt and its culture. 'It's among the most beautiful countries I have visited - the pyramids, the temples and the landscape are absolutely exotic. I even enjoyed the barbecue dinner on a boat on the Nile. We shot in a number of places and I've come back with fond memories of my trip.' Ask her about the song she shot, Jee Karda, she smiles, 'Wait and watch. It should be on air later this month. We shot at 4am every day to capture the light and it was scorching. To keep cool we would stay in shades and sip fruit juice or mint tea.' More About: Watch , Katrina , Katrina Kaif

When Bollywood meets Hollywood
2008-05-24 08:06:00 This looks like a plot straight out of a movie: a multibillionaire, in his penchant to strike big in whatever he does, goes out to strike a billion dollars worth of deals with industry players who are world famous. And that too at the cheapest of prices when most in the industry are struggling for funds in a global economic slowdown. The twist is, it happened for real early this week when Reliance Big Entertainment, the integrated media and entertainment arm of the US$75 billion-revenue Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group owned by the sixth richest man in the world with a net worth of $40 billion said that it had entered into a slew of development deals with eight Hollywood -based production houses to make “at least” 10 films in the next two years at a cost of $1 billion. The CISF personnel handed Sahil over to Santa Cruz airport police. "Sahil snatched her mobile and tried to embrace her while she resisted. But a close friend of Shahid's clarified that, "while that Vidya his co star from Kismat Konnection and a very dear friend had dropped in to say hi after which they proceeded to catch a quick lunch during the lunch time which lasted for 45 mins. Dia replces Bips as 'sex bomb'
2008-05-22 08:03:00 It’s sad yet true. Sanjay Gupta’s much waited and hyped flick, Acid Factory, will showcase Dia Mirza as ‘sex bomb’ replacing its previously finalized diva Bipasha Basu. Thin is 'in' in Bollywood
2008-05-22 07:54:00 From Hollywood to Bollywood - the latest craze in the Indian film industry is being slim and sexy. Forget Sri Devi and Madhuri Dixit who with their curves and wholesome beauty were the epitome of the classic Indian diva. At the moment, winds are blowing in the opposite direction. The prerequisites of making a name in Bollywood - a big secret known to all - is to look slim and sexy. The situation has gone so far that if you're a 'roly-poly' then it's better you start searching for an alternative, for the watch word here is looking thin. Well, on a positive note, no book has mentioned that being in shape is bad. But, like everything else, excess of anything is always harmful! Anyways, so much so for the aspiring ones. Now lets cut to the B-world. The B-world is abuzz with actresses' dramatic makeovers. A very recent example of such a transition is that of Kareena Kapoor. The Jab We Met actress, who has found new love in the arms of Saif Ali Khan, has transformed herself from t...
Bollywood muscles in on Hollywood
2008-05-22 07:51:00 With India's entertainment billionaires seemingly blessed with limitless pockets, Bollywood is flexing its movie muscle, taking on Hollywood in unexpected corners of the globe and buying up theatres worldwide. "Bollywood now has the muscle and (Indian) corporates have big money," prominent Indian filmmaker Jagmohan Mundra told AFP. Mundra said Bollywood companies began the bid to buy into Hollywood cinemas and distribution networks after Indian films failed to get a wide showing in the West. The slew of major entertainment deals announced this week at Cannes, the world's biggest film market, underlined Indian cinema expansionism. Reliance BIG Entertainment, for example, the entertainment branch of India's mighty Anil Dhirubhai Ambani (ADA) Group, unveiled plans to spend one billion US dollars by the end of 2009. ADA plans to use the cash to produce a slate of films in nine languages while ensuring the movies make it onto cinema screens outside India as well as on home v...
Bollywood's 'blog wars'
2008-05-21 07:46:00 They are being described as the Bollywood blog wars. Some of India's top film stars have taken to blogging in a big way. But in a country where many fans accord their stars almost god-like status, not everyone is happy with what is being said. In recent posts, two of India's top stars have upset fans of the country's most popular actor, Shah Rukh Khan. Veteran superstar, Amitabh Bachchan, on his blog, first described Shah Rukh Khan's new television quiz show as a flop. Now he says his comments have been misunderstood by the media. "Shah Rukh has been and is a friend and a wonderful colleague. He has never ever crossed that very delicate line between familiarity and respect," he wrote in a recent post. "I will apologise to Shah Rukh a hundred times if there is an iota of doubt in his mind about my conduct and behaviour towards him," he said. More About: Wars , Blog
