Shake Your Bollywood
2008-04-30 07:52:00 It's 7 o'clock on a Saturday evening. In a new dance studio in Dubai, a technolike beat begins playing, accelerating as a high-pitched female voice sings in Hindi: "You are my world. Such is my love." On the wooden floor, accountants, publicists, and other businesspeople dance with abandon. They shuffle their feet, twist and wriggle their hips, and flail their arms, taking cues for the Bollywood -style number from their dance teacher, Rinku, who until recently was working in Mumbai. It's common knowledge that the Indian film industry is big business the 800 or so movies released in more than 25 Indian languages each year bring in $1.5 billion in revenue. Bollywood technically Mumbai's Hindi-language-films business accounts for a third of releases and is the most visible and popular segment of the Indian movie industry. And as its worldwide audience, now estimated at 3.6 billion, grows, so does the energetic dance style which mixes folk, classical, and pop influences it...
Hrithik returns 30crore cheque
2008-04-30 07:34:00 The buzz about the multi-crore deal that Hrithik had struck with Adlabs last year is that it's off! Hrithik wants to return the full amount to Adlabs. But the company is not willing to take a no for an answer. According to a source, "Hrithik has given the cheque back. But they aren't accepting it. In fact they've asked him to keep the money and they'll make just one film instead of three films for that whole amount with him at a date convenient to him." Hrithik won't comment on the status of his deal with Adlabs. All he'll say about star prices is, "The corporate companies are looking at the movie market expanding in the next 3-4 years. I agree many recent films haven't done well. But Om Shanti Om and Jodhaa-Akbar reaffirmed the industry's faith in big films. Jodhaa-Akbar was a period film and above three hours long with no commercial trappings. Theatres across India could've just four shows daily. And it's done 150 crore-rupee business worldwide. I think everything that's happening at the IPL is being turned into a tamasha. Sreesanth being slapped is very unfortunate. I feel that the spirit of sportsmanship which makes every sport noble is now going out of cricket. Sad. Hema Malini: "Yes, cricket has become a big tamasha. The dignity of the game is completely lost. Cricket by itself is so engrossing. Why does it suddenly need women to cheer on the players and the public? There's absolutely no need for such distractions. The Indian public had no clue about such entertainment (cheerleaders) before this. And now there's slapping during the game! I am shocked. Urmila Matondkar: "I don't think cricket is turning into tamasha at all. It's just that cricket has turned more glamorous exciting and bigger. As for the cheerleaders I don't think t... Bollywood women get into business too
2008-04-29 08:11:00 If the men are doing it so are the women. From opening restaurants to starting hotels, actresses are also blurring the lines between the worlds of Bollywood and business. While actors like Mithun Chakraborty, Shah Rukh Khan and Suniel Shetty are thriving in the business world, their counterparts Sushmita Sen, Aishwarya Rai and Preity Zinta are also giving them tough competition. Sushmita was probably the first to turn entrepreneur when she set up her company Sensazione in 2006. Through her company, she plans to open a chain of hotels, lounges and spas. Besides, she has acquired 12,000 sq ft of space in Kolkata for a 'lifestyle zone', which apart from a huge open space will house a nightclub, a restaurant and a cigar lounge. She says frankly that she was tired of being an actor and business had always been a second career option. "Had I not been an actor, I would have been an entrepreneur. The lounge bar in Kolkata and my dream project, the spa, are all part of my effort to... More About: Business , Women

Yash Raj Films has lost it now
2008-04-29 07:56:00 The boom time for the Mumbai film industry is not translating into windfalls for top Bollywood production house Yash Raj Films (YRF), with its first offering of 2008, "Tashan", failing to live up to the hype. While in 2007, YRF's tally of flops outweighed that of hits, their first release this year has failed to charm critics and the audience response to "Tashan" has not been too heartening. Though heavy on formula and style, the film starring the reigning star of the box-office, Akshay Kumar, and media's favourite star couple, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, has no story to tell. Seems that writer-director Vijay Krishna Acharya was so busy packaging egos that he forgot what he wanted to say in "Tashan". The fact that "Tashan" did not release in several multiplexes due to a long-standing tiff with cinema hall owners over sharing of revenues has been a major dampener. The country's top production house has been trying to get multiplex ow... More About: Lost
A thing Emraan can't share!!!
2008-04-29 07:47:00 One look at Emraan Hashmi's filmography and you know that the young man loves to do films which aren't too crowded for comfort. With Vivek Agnihotri's 'Chocolate' as an exception which had Anil Kapoor, Suneil Shetty, Arshad Warsi and Irrfan Khan for his company, Emraan has mainly done two/single hero projects. While 'Murder' (Ashmit Patel), 'Gangster' (Shiney Ahuja), 'Good Boy Bad Boy' (Tusshar Kapoor) and 'Aksar' (Dino Morea) did have another male lead sharing screen space, Emraan still managed to tower above his contemporaries in most of the projects. Now his upcoming 'Jannat' is a solo hero project, just as 'Awarapan' and 'The Train' were last year. Is it a conscious move? "More than being termed as a conscious move, I would term it is a well thought move", says Emraan after a brief pause, "For me the film should work for me and I should be able to work for the film. It has to be mutual." Please elaborate. "I don't want to be a part o... More About: Share , Thing
Here's competition for Hrithik
2008-04-26 08:09:00 Watch out. Bollywood is turning super-athletic. Not only are we being treated to a series of sport-centric films like Shimit Amin's Chak De (hockey), Vivek Agnihotri's Goal (football) amd Nisha Chainani's forthcoming Mumbai Marathon, our heroes are constantly searching out new adventure-sports for Hindi films. In Dhoom 2 we had Hrithik practising water and ice sports that Indian audiences had never seen. In Anubhav Sinha's forthcoming Cash Riteish Deshmukh did Street Luge which is actually about lying down on a skateboard and chasing cars. It looks like Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan and all other super-atheletes of Bollywood have stiff competition. By practicing the bracing outdoor sports called Parkour Harman Baweja has just become Indian cinema's first certifiable Traceur. Explains Harman, "Parkour is actually urban free running. What it requires you to do is run across streets, building precipices, skyscrapers in one linear movement without breaking the momentum and wi... More About: Competition

'Honestly, Prachi is like a part of our family. My father, mother and I have adopted her. But as a producer I tortured the hell out of her. I made her work harder than any of my actors just because I was so close to her. Prachi feels that was unfair. But I didn't want to be accused of favouritism. Now she's moved on,' Ekta told. 'Other actors have to give a two-three months notice before they leave Balaji. But I made her give me five months' notice. I made her do extra work. At one time the poor kid was shooting for me, for her film with Farhan Akhtar 'Rock On' and for Sony's reality show 'Jhalak Dikhla Jaa' all at once. It's not easy to make yourself be heard like that. Q. What if the guy you like turns out to be a gay? A. He would still be a good friend of mine. Q. If you are going out on a date and someone makes a pass at you, would you want your guy to fight with that man? A. I have seen that happening in movies and have always been inspired when Shah Rukh Khan does something like that in Baazigar and Darr. Q. Among the current crop of Bollywood stars, who do you think is the hottest? A. Aamir is my favorite. I think Hrithik is also perfect in terms of looks, height and body. Q. Your first crush? A. Hollywood, Bollywood seek to stamp out piracy together
2008-04-24 08:11:00 The American entertainment industry wants to join hands with India to eliminate counterfeiting and piracy that costs Bollywood an estimated loss of $4 billion and 800,000 direct jobs each year. Leading entertainment companies from Hollywood and Bollywood came together at an India super-session show organised by the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) of America in Las Vegas, Nevada. "Now that we've quantified the losses, we're working with government and industry to eliminate counterfeiting and piracy at the source," said Greg Kalbaugh, director and counsel at US India Business Council (USIBC), an advocacy group seeking to advance India-US commercial ties. "The first step is supporting India's adoption of sensible legislation which regulates the production of optical discs. That will have an immediate impact on the rates of counterfeiting and piracy," he said. "The Indian entertainment industry is growing at a combined annual rate of over 18 percen... I should undoubtedly give the entire credit to my director for the ease with which the character of Piya has unfolded on the screen in 'U, Me Aur Hum'. Kareena's secret diet revealed
2008-04-24 07:39:00 There have been enough speculation on Kareena Kapoor's crash dieting and enough stories about her fainting on the sets. All these rumours are just that – rumours. Kareena's Nutritionist and Diet ician, Rujuta Diwekar, has revealed the true story of the actor's diet and eating habits. Kareena met Diwekar in May 2007, and the latter has been the actor's dietician since then. Apparently, Kareena gave Diwekar a brief about her character – that she had to be lean and sexy. Diwekar knew that Kareena is a pure vegetarian, and wondered if she could lose the required amount of weight by going on a vegetarian diet. She put the actor on a diet that consisted of healthy nutritious food. Kareena has been eating parathas, momos, cheese, pasta, bananas and other food that are perceived as fattening. "Contrary to reports in the media, Kareena did not starve herself, and neither did she subsist only on orange juice. There were also stories that she fainted on the sets, but that... Just another day in the life of Shah Rukh Khan
2008-04-23 07:46:00 Six matches in four days is not the kind of sample any self-respecting scientist would rely upon to draw Nobel-prize-winning conclusions, but the Spin is not a self-respecting scientist and its Nobel can wait. So far, the Indian Premier League has supplied two truly outstanding innings (Brendon McCullum and Mike Hussey), one world-class opening ceremony, one last-over finish (and even then the Bangalore Royal Challengers only needed two off six balls to beat the Mumbai Indians), one floodlight failure and at least one minor lathi charge (the Spin was almost caught up in the stampede outside the Wankhede on Sunday night but bravely fought its way out of trouble/stepped neatly to the side). The fiasco at Eden Gardens, where the embarrassment over the temporary darkness was made worse by a minefield of a pitch, has been the one obvious clanger. But you do not have to delve too far beneath the surface to discern more subtle discord. Top of the agenda in some quarters is the extent to wh... Afghan TV station defies Taleban and President Karzai and keeps Bollywood s
2008-04-23 07:43:00 Kabul’s biggest private television station has defied a government order to take Indian soap operas off the air, insisting that it was issued at the behest of religious conservatives trying to “re-Taleban ise” Afghanistan. More and more viewers are addicted to the Bombay-made dramas tales of family life with thin storylines, wooden acting and poor production values, but which have captured the Afghan imagination. The soaps have caused a huge debate. Prime-time viewing is a battleground between liberals and conservatives, with President Hamid Karzai backing the order to take the dramas off the air by yesterday’s deadline after months of dispute. At least one station complied, but last night viewers were able to watch Tulsi – its full title is “Because a Mother-in-Law Was Once a Daughter-in-Law too” which is said to be the most popular programme in Afghanistan, and Kasauti Zindagi Kay (Trials of Life). What was noticed all over was her hitching up with cricket stud Yuvraj Singh and reportedly even getting engaged, but they headed for splitsville after a torrid two years. Who dumped whom has been the speculation ever since, but one thing she has been firm about is, once snapped, it remains snapped, and she couldn't be bothered to follow either Yuvraj's sixers or fielding with Deepika Padukone. But good to see that Kim's busy as a bee all over again. Good for her, too. Of late, she has been constantly shuttling between shoots and what's more, quite enjoying the hectic schedule. There have been rumours of new men in her life after Yuvraj, too, but the girl is typic...
Twenty20 actress gets 1 crore
2008-04-23 07:29:00 While we are always reading the accounts books of the leading men in Bollywood or Down South, most often the leading ladies are relegated and do not count. Though in Bollywood too some of them demand a crore and a half to even Rs 3 crorer, as in the case of Kareena Kapoor who has always managed to strike gold even when she had a series orf flops under her belt. Down South, the film may do a jig at the box-office in direct relation to the heroine's wiggles and jiggles, but despite all that, it's the Chiranjeevis and Ajiths and Rajanikanths who sit atop the heaps of currency notes. Now, it seems a ravishing actress joins the big league in terms of fees, Nayantara. The Malayalee actress has signed on the dotted line of a Tamil film at Rs 1 crore. Thereby she becomes the highest paid Southern actress, at least Malayalee actress, in Indian films.
