Is Hrithik Roshan a strict dad?
2008-04-22 07:55:00
The one treat that Hrithik 's little son looked forward to on his second birthday recently was …chocolate cake! Little Hrehaan isn't allowed that bit of culinary indulgence. Says the protective papa, "He can have all kinds of cake…except chocolate. I feel his body doesn't need it for the first few years.Actually you don't need chocolate at all at any stage of your life. It just displaces your hunger for proper food. That really bothers me. The moment a child has a chocolate he grows addicted. I allow Hrehaan to have all kinds of cakes. But not chocolate. As it is, from the time he has a life of his own with his friends he'll have all the access to chocolate.Believe me I know." So is Hrithik a strict dad? "Only as far as Hrehaan's diet is concerned. As a child I ate the wrong kind of food. In my later years I really had to clean myself up. It was really tough, and I don't want Hrehaan to go through it. So I'm conditioning him to do the right...

Dreams are the stuff television tycoon Ekta Kapoor's career are made of. Now her 40-inch screen dreams are about to acquire a 70 mm vision. Ekta Kapoor, for long besieged by space problems for her myriad serials currently being shot in studio complexes in Mumbai owned by Balajee Films, is now planning to build her own film city. Says a source very close to the project, "Ekta has always felt bogged by the lack of physical and creative space. We at Balajee can never capture the mythical 'Magic Hour' from the movies in our serials because we've to ration our time on the roads and public places. Ekta plans to build a whole studio complex, not unlike Nitin Desai's studio in Karjat, with inbuilt roads and lanes so that we get an epic feel into our soaps, and we can control the lighting. If you see Raj Kapoor or Bhansali's films you can see the quality and texture of lighting is unique. Ekta wants that quality in her serials." Ekta is planning to build her own film city o...

Symonds heard no racist taunts from the crowd at the 90,000-capacity Eden Gardens Stadium when his Hyderabad team turned out against Kolkata on Sunday night. "When I came out on the field there was a fair bit of noise but I didn't hear anything nasty," Symonds said. "I went down to the boundary after about five overs in the field and everything was OK. I didn't have a drama." With his $1.5 million IPL price tag, Symonds is a superstar in India but not even he can compete with the incredible profile of Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan, owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders. The Aussie all-rounder, who met the movie star before the Hyderabad-Kolkata clash, said: "India never ceases to amaze me. The players are one small group of stars but that bloke (Khan) is on another level. He is probably the biggest star of all. There is a real cavalcade of stars here outside the actual cricketers." Symonds' reception at Eden Gardens - receiving cheers as he jogged out t...

Bachchans front Bollywood film on power plant debacle
2008-04-22 07:42:00
In the first on-screen appearance with her husband since getting married, Bollywood beauty Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan takes the lead as a powerful executive in Sarkar Raj (Absolute Ruler). The film that will also star her father-in-law, Amitabh Bachchan, and her husband, Abhishek Bachchan, will hit the screens on June 6, the film's director said at a press conference Monday. Sarkar Raj is loosely based on the controversy around an Enron power plant built in India's western state of Maharashtra a decade ago. Director Ram Gopal Varma however defended the movie as original. It "has no reference point and was a completely original script," Varma said, according to the Press Trust of India.

Before battle, Mallya takes on SRK
2008-04-21 07:42:00
It is not just a war on the cricket field. Even before the game begins Royal Challengers boss Vijay Mallya has taken on his opponent for today's (April 18) match -- the Badhshah of Bollywood Shahrukh Khan. Its a battle between two legends in their own right. One is a celebrated liquor baron and the other the Badshah of Bollywood. Vijay Mallya and Shahrukh Khan will be pitted against each other when their teams clash in the inaugural match of cricket's Summer Slam. The man at the helm of the Royal Challengers has set the war of words alight by taking a jibe at Shahrukh's Kolkata Knight Riders. Vijay Mallya said, "Shahrukh Khan is a superstar and I am not. But, his stardom will not count on the cricket field. It will all depend on which team plays better cricket and I stand by the fact that we are a good team." Shahrukh may have not responded to his rival's war cry, however, the commander of his force Sourav Ganguly declared that he is ready for any challenge thrown at ...

'I prefer gizmos to girlfriends'
2008-04-21 07:40:00
Has Dino Morea got all wired up? No, nothing to do with his tensions, girlfriends or largest number of duds at the box-office. Dino is a gizmo freak. From the i-pod to the i-Mac, some are compulsive acquirers, they havce them all, and want them all, and some more. Gizmos give them an adrenalim rush and a high than perhaps no superhit or supergirl friend could. Too bad for the filmmakers and the arm candy. Dino Morea is nothing if not a clued in guy and all wired up. He is the proud owner of nearly all the product series you name in the market, and never seems to have enough of them. He already had the i-pod and the i-phone, and now has gone and bought himself a brand new Macbook Air . He dimpled wickedly and said, "It is unbelievable how light in weight it is...it has all the features that I always wanted and which are really exciting to learn and explore, especially with its track-pad." Oops, he's done it again, as Kylie Minogue sang for herself years ago!

Hansikaa Motwani strikes big
2008-04-21 07:33:00
'Aap Ka Suroor' girl Hansikaa Motwani has already reached the pinnacle of success, we can say at the tender age of 16! After tasting success with her very first film, the young girl has moved on to sign four big banner films in a row. As Kumar Mangat's 'Money Hai Toh Honey Hai' gets ready for release where she is cast opposite Govinda, the promos really look promising, and the girl will be seen cracking up the comic verses for the very first time! According to our sources, the actress has signed four big banner films recently, but Hansikaa, as all stars do, is tightlipped about the projects. Only time will tell us whether there is indeed 'Honey' in these roles she has taken up!!
Aamir is back to his wild ways
2008-04-21 07:32:00
Mr Perfectionist has just got another bellyache. Or is it one he's giving others, again? In the recent past, his production of Taare Zameen Par, saw the original director and writer of the film, Amole Gupte, being sidelined and the producer-star of the film, massively rewrote the film and took over the reins, too. He gave due credit to Gupte, but the scrap caused a lot of heartburn to Gupte, naturally. It was small consolation that the film was appreciated very much by the audieneces as well as critics. Now, Aamir Khan's production of Delhi Belly seems to have caused heartburn and a bellyache too. The first to the original director of Delhi Belly, and the second to Aamir Khan, to be sure. Or is it that Aamir is giving a lot of bellyaches to just about everyone around? These pre-production aches and post-production heartburns are not usual for Mr Khan, and he would probably have quite a stomach upset if he didn't play Mr Perfectionist all the time. While the directorial respo...

We don't regret marriage prank: Malaika and Arbaaz
2008-04-21 07:30:00
The shocking story on the end of one of filmdom's most durable marriages rocked Mumbai yesterday. Turned out, it was part of a well-planned campaign to promote a line of cosmetics. A shocking and unethical illustration of how the media is used and manipulated to generate curiosity and interest in consumer products. Malaika Arora who was part of the campaign seemed pretty uncomfortable with the situation What is this about your marriage in serious trouble? Nothing. All is well in paradise. No serious or even non-serious trouble in our marriage Let me get it straight. You did this as part of advertisement campaign? It is part of an ad campaign for a product that Arbaaz and I are launching. Rather re-launching. See, the concept of the ad is that he comes towards the end and re-proposes to me. What was told to the press was that Arbaaz was getting remarried. I don't know how when where they came up with the rest (of the story). But Malaika, if you say your husband is getting re-marrie...

Bollywood steals cricket Premier show
2008-04-19 07:58:00
In the end, Bollywood and a spectacular opening ceremony won over cricket in the opening match of the world's first private million-dollar cricket competition. The cricket in the Indian Premier League opener on a balmy summer evening at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Friday night was one-sided - the Calcutta team whipped the hosts Bangalore by an embarrassing 140 runs. There were star players aplenty on the field - two stellar Indian captains, Rahul Dravid and Saurav Ganguly, Australia's Ricky Ponting, India's new fast bowling sensation Ishant Sharma, South African star Jacques Kallis, and Indian pace bowler Zaheer Khan. But the presence of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, also the owner of the Calcutta team, overshadowed the cricket. King Khan Fans gaped at their superhero as he blew kisses, cheered and danced precariously on the ledge of an upper tier stand. Men and women, young and old, whipped out their mobile phones to take fuzzy pictures of Khan as he open...

The Voice of Bollywood, in the Flesh
2008-04-19 07:55:00
“I sing everything,” Asha Bhosle told an adoring audience at Carnegie Hall on Thursday night, and she was not exaggerating. who turns 75 in September, is probably the most recorded singer in history. As the voice of Bollywood musicals called a playback singer, because actresses sing and dance while her vocals are heard and a queen of South Asian pop, she has recorded more than 12,000 songs in a career that dates to 1943. (One of her few rivals is her older sister, Lata Mangeshkar, another hugely prolific playback singer. At Carnegie Hall Ms. Bhosle sang one of her sister’s hits, “Lag Ja Gale.”) Ms. Bhosle has sung Indian classical and semiclassical styles and all the culture-hopping pop hybrids that Bollywood composers have devised. Bollywood music is wonderfully multifarious; there’s no telling what might show up in a song, from traditional tabla rhythms to funk guitars to synthesizers. Ms. Bhosle’s Carnegie Hall set encompassed the pristi...

Why my kissing makes news?
2008-04-18 08:35:00
Bollywood's notorious "serial kisser" (he even wore this slogan on his tee in one his films) hasn't yet quit his trademark scenes. But he has also moved on to something equally exciting and topical. Veteran of a thousand liplocks with a bevy of beauties onscreen, in his latest film, Jannat, Emraan Hashmi goes into another tangle: that of cricket and betting and bookies. He, however, remains as unfazed by any image people may have of him as by whichever heroine braces up before him for the liplock. "I don't know why it gathers so much news when I kiss," he said. "It's not even at the back of my mind." The last 12 months or more may have been uneventful for Hashmi, never mind the buzz he creates with his kisses. We are one quarter gone in 2008, too, but the tiny packet of dynamite promises a good year yet. He not only has Jannat coming up at the theatres soon, Raaz 2 also features in his near-future plans. The upcoming film, Jannat, plunges into th...

Apparently a certain section of the industry is determined to hold Upen up for ridicule. Off the record he names some people who have in some way or other felt slighted threatened or rejected by the actor. "But the truth is I'm not here to take up a panga with anyone. I'm accused of having a temper problem. Fine. But do I display my temper unnecessarily? I got into a situation with the 123 director Ashwin Dheer. But did you see how silly I looked in 123, specially when I take my shirt off in the middle of a song, everyone laughed when it wasn't meant to be funny." Upen takes a deep breath. "I'm accused of being the kiss-and-tell type. Will anyone, even my closest friends, be able to claim I've shared my girlfriend secrets with anyone? I'm not that kind of a guy." What about the stories of Upen wh...

Bollywood stars, lion dancers add color
2008-04-18 08:14:00
The Indian capital welcomed the Olympic torch with traditional pomp and pageantry - and a traditional lion dance performed by about 400 overseas Chinese living in the eastern city of Kolkata. The relay, stretching from the presidential palace to India Gate, a war memorial, and cut to less than 3 km for security reasons, went smoothly - with top current and retired athletes, politicians and Bollywood stars taking part. The first torch was lit at the nearly-century-old Rashtrapati Bhavan - reportedly the biggest official residence of a president in the world. Suresh Kalmadi, the president of the Indian Olympic Association, said the relay was a success. "The spirit of the Olympics is universal and should be upheld by the whole world," said Kalmadi, who ran the first leg of the relay on the broad boulevard. The second torchbearer, legendary Indian athlete Milkha Singh told China Daily: "Indians want the Olympics in Beijing to be a very good Games. The top sportsmen of the...

One skill I Learnt while Acting

Bipasha Basu:"For Dhoom 2 I finally learnt to swim. Earlier I couldn't even get into the water. Swimming was required for a surfing shot. Finally though I didn't have to apply my new skill because the sea was too rough. But at least I learnt how to swim." Amitabh Bachchan: "For the first time in my career I had to learn a skill for Sanjay Bhansali's Black. I learnt the sign language. I think this silent but utterly eloquent way of communicating helped me become a better humanbeing and actor." Victor Banerjee: "The one skill that I had the hardest time learning for a role, was a bit of a joke. You see, I had to learn to speak Urdu for my first film ever in Hindi Shatranj Ke Khiladi, and that too for the mighty Satyajit Ray. I had three Urdu teachers Shama Zaidi, Javed Siddiqui and Saeed Jaffrey, all spewing venom and tearing me apart because Urdu with a Bengali accent is certainly peculiar. And another unique skill was for a Bengali film Pratidaan where ...

Krazzy 4
2008-04-17 07:35:00
Shah Rukh Khan’s successful stint as a guest ‘item’ dance boy continues with this inconsequential comic caper. Do not be misguided by the mis-spelt title into thinking that it is the latest sequel to the non-existent ‘Krazzy’ series: it refers to four mentally ill patients. Raja (Arshad Warsi), Gangadhar (Rajpal Yadav), Dabboo (Suresh Menon) and Dr Mukherjee (Irrfan Khan) suffer from diverse but stereotypical mental conditions and are inmates at ‘We Care Hospital’. Dr Sonali (Juhi Chawla), their psychiatrist decides to treat them to an excursion: an India v England cricket match being played on 15 August, India’s Independence Day. Enroute, the day trippers bond: they sing a song. Prior to arriving at the game, Dr Sonali stops at her office to collect some documents. She gets kidnapped. It is left to our hapless heroes to rescue her and to unravel the mystery behind her abduction. This is a welcome attempt to inject slight sophistica...

Don't lose innocence Darsheel
2008-04-17 07:30:00
There are offers galore for Darsheel Safary, who wowed audiences with his performance in 'Taare Zameen Par'. But the child actor has turned picky, making producers scout for other talented kids from the same film. Tanay Cheda, who played Darsheel's best friend Rajan in 'Taare...', has bagged a role in ad-maker Vikrma Singh's comedy 'Mastang Mama', which stars Ruslaan Mumtaz. Tanay, who was seen on crutches throughout the film, is from Raell Padamsee's theatre group. But the team of 'Mastang Mama' was initially keen on Darsheel. 'But he seems out of bounds. So we thought why not the guy who played Darsheel's classmate and buddy? We feel Tanay is as good as Darsheel,' said Ruslaan. And the actor hopes to bond big-time with his young co-star before shooting begins April 30. 'And I've all the time in the world to bond with Tanay, since a ripped ligament in my leg has me stationary for a month,' he said. 'Ironically Tanay was on crutches in 'Taare Zameen Par' while I...

Dia Mirza has been a lost and found case, as she gets back to tinsel town after a hiatus. As the ravishing Dia gets ready for some comic action with 'Krazzy 4', where she plays Arshad Warsi's beau, we get to talk to the lady on her role in the film.. Q.: You are appearing in "Krazzy 4" as a big surprise package. What would you like to say about that? A.: (Smiling) Yeah, you are absolutely right. Actually, it was Jaydeep's idea to introduce me as the trump card at the end of the film. Previously, I have done few comedies, but working in "Krazzy 4" was something different. It's much better than the so- called slapstick and sensitive comedies. You can call it social comedy. Hats off to Jaydeep's effort in depicting a good story with a cool comic touch! Q.: There are three item numbers in the film. Don't you bite nails for missing any one of them? A.: Not at all. I think, the director would have asked me to do so if there was any requirement. Bipashah Basu's Favourite Singer Is Pakistani Singer Atif Aslam
2008-04-16 18:48:00
Actress Bipasha Basu is a fan of Pakistani singer Atif Aslam and she wants him to do the playback for her movie "Race". Just back from Kolkata after shooting for her first Bengali film, "Sab Charitra Kalpunik" (All Characters Imaginary)" by Rituparno Ghosh, Bipasha almost swoons at the mention of her favourite singer. "I am a diehard fan of Atif from the time he sang 'Tere Bin' and 'Doori'. I wish he would sing for me some day. I listen to his albums in my car all the time and so when I heard about the track 'Jaan-e-Jana' in 'Race', I knew only Atif could do it," she said. Bipasha not only recommended Atif for the song but also urged the film's producers to sign up her favourite singer. "And why not? Atif has a deal with Tips, which is producing 'Race'. So this was my golden opportunity to get Atif into one of my films. And now 'Jaan-e-Jana' is my favourite song in 'Race'." Talk about the crackling chemistry th...

'Krazzy 4' case highlights Bollywood's copyright woes
2008-04-16 07:42:00
Musician Ram Sampat's Rs 2 crore out of court settlement with filmmaker Rakesh Roshan for alleged plagiarism has again highlighted Bollywood's ignorance of copyright laws. Many industry people hailed the decision even though some were against the way Sampat went about securing his rights. The industry reacts: Subhash Ghai: "Though I've no right to comment on this case without knowing the inside story I must say we sometimes mistake an inspired re-worked version of a song or film as our own original work of art without realizing the complications of copyright laws. It's no secret that we in this country have been adapting and re-working on music and movies completely ignorant of the laws. This case has warned us about the future. However I'm sure Rajesh Roshan is talented enough not to pick on anyone's work.

I had to pay Ram Rs 2 crores
2008-04-16 07:37:00
"We took a NOC from Sony-Erricson and on 13 December 2008 they gave me a letter of consent. I went about this the right way. My conscience is clear. Towards the end of March I was told the tune belongs to Ram Sampath and not Sony-Erricson. Not in my wildest dreams could I doubt the company's intentions. I was misinformed. I was in a crisis situation and had no choice but to pay up the Rs 2 crores that was asked of me. I'd like to ask Ram Sampat one thing. If his tune was the same as the one in Krazzy 4 wouldn't it have been an equally big hit when it was played as part of the cellphone ad campaign? That too had Hrithik dancing in it… Yes the main hookline is the same. And if Ram Sampat sensed an irregularity why did he wait until my film's release was around the corner?
Ranbir is not 'The Bachelor'
2008-04-16 07:33:00
There's a strong rumour in the industry that Ranbir Kapoor's post-debut film Bachna Ae Haseenon directed by Siddharth Anand is a remake of Gary Sinyor's 1999 romantic comedy The Bachelor . However the young director, directing the film for his childhood friend Ranbir, completely denies the adapative urge. "My film is certainly not adapted from any source. It's as much The Bachelor as my Tara Rum Pum was Reservoir Dogs." The rumours of Ranbir doing Chris O'Donnel's role from The Bachelor originated from the casting of several prominent leading ladies opposite the young actor. These leading ladies are Bipasha Basu, Minissha Lamba and Deepika Padukone. In fact this week the entire unit has left for a 50-day schedule in Europe.
