Bollywood steals cricket Premier show
2008-04-19 07:58:00 In the end, Bollywood and a spectacular opening ceremony won over cricket in the opening match of the world's first private million-dollar cricket competition. The cricket in the Indian Premier League opener on a balmy summer evening at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Friday night was one-sided - the Calcutta team whipped the hosts Bangalore by an embarrassing 140 runs. There were star players aplenty on the field - two stellar Indian captains, Rahul Dravid and Saurav Ganguly, Australia's Ricky Ponting, India's new fast bowling sensation Ishant Sharma, South African star Jacques Kallis, and Indian pace bowler Zaheer Khan. But the presence of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, also the owner of the Calcutta team, overshadowed the cricket. King Khan Fans gaped at their superhero as he blew kisses, cheered and danced precariously on the ledge of an upper tier stand. Men and women, young and old, whipped out their mobile phones to take fuzzy pictures of Khan as he open... More About: Cricket , Show , Steals
The Voice of Bollywood, in the Flesh
2008-04-19 07:55:00 “I sing everything,” Asha Bhosle told an adoring audience at Carnegie Hall on Thursday night, and she was not exaggerating. who turns 75 in September, is probably the most recorded singer in history. As the voice of Bollywood musicals called a playback singer, because actresses sing and dance while her vocals are heard and a queen of South Asian pop, she has recorded more than 12,000 songs in a career that dates to 1943. (One of her few rivals is her older sister, Lata Mangeshkar, another hugely prolific playback singer. At Carnegie Hall Ms. Bhosle sang one of her sister’s hits, “Lag Ja Gale.”) Ms. Bhosle has sung Indian classical and semiclassical styles and all the culture-hopping pop hybrids that Bollywood composers have devised. Bollywood music is wonderfully multifarious; there’s no telling what might show up in a song, from traditional tabla rhythms to funk guitars to synthesizers. Ms. Bhosle’s Carnegie Hall set encompassed the pristi... More About: Voice

Why my kissing makes news?
2008-04-18 08:35:00 Bollywood's notorious "serial kisser" (he even wore this slogan on his tee in one his films) hasn't yet quit his trademark scenes. But he has also moved on to something equally exciting and topical. Veteran of a thousand liplocks with a bevy of beauties onscreen, in his latest film, Jannat, Emraan Hashmi goes into another tangle: that of cricket and betting and bookies. He, however, remains as unfazed by any image people may have of him as by whichever heroine braces up before him for the liplock. "I don't know why it gathers so much news when I kiss," he said. "It's not even at the back of my mind." The last 12 months or more may have been uneventful for Hashmi, never mind the buzz he creates with his kisses. We are one quarter gone in 2008, too, but the tiny packet of dynamite promises a good year yet. He not only has Jannat coming up at the theatres soon, Raaz 2 also features in his near-future plans. The upcoming film, Jannat, plunges into th... More About: News , Kissing
Deepika & my pics not sleazy!
2008-04-18 08:31:00 "I'm being made out to be this publicity hungry woman-eating casanova with nothing better to do than chase skirts. I know exactly who's behind these." Apparently a certain section of the industry is determined to hold Upen up for ridicule. Off the record he names some people who have in some way or other felt slighted threatened or rejected by the actor. "But the truth is I'm not here to take up a panga with anyone. I'm accused of having a temper problem. Fine. But do I display my temper unnecessarily? I got into a situation with the 123 director Ashwin Dheer. But did you see how silly I looked in 123, specially when I take my shirt off in the middle of a song, everyone laughed when it wasn't meant to be funny." Upen takes a deep breath. "I'm accused of being the kiss-and-tell type. Will anyone, even my closest friends, be able to claim I've shared my girlfriend secrets with anyone? I'm not that kind of a guy." What about the stories of Upen wh...

Bollywood stars, lion dancers add color
2008-04-18 08:14:00 The Indian capital welcomed the Olympic torch with traditional pomp and pageantry - and a traditional lion dance performed by about 400 overseas Chinese living in the eastern city of Kolkata. The relay, stretching from the presidential palace to India Gate, a war memorial, and cut to less than 3 km for security reasons, went smoothly - with top current and retired athletes, politicians and Bollywood stars taking part. The first torch was lit at the nearly-century-old Rashtrapati Bhavan - reportedly the biggest official residence of a president in the world. Suresh Kalmadi, the president of the Indian Olympic Association, said the relay was a success. "The spirit of the Olympics is universal and should be upheld by the whole world," said Kalmadi, who ran the first leg of the relay on the broad boulevard. The second torchbearer, legendary Indian athlete Milkha Singh told China Daily: "Indians want the Olympics in Beijing to be a very good Games. The top sportsmen of the... One skill I Learnt while Acting
2008-04-17 07:50:00 Bipasha Basu:"For Dhoom 2 I finally learnt to swim. Earlier I couldn't even get into the water. Swimming was required for a surfing shot. Finally though I didn't have to apply my new skill because the sea was too rough. But at least I learnt how to swim." Amitabh Bachchan: "For the first time in my career I had to learn a skill for Sanjay Bhansali's Black. I learnt the sign language. I think this silent but utterly eloquent way of communicating helped me become a better humanbeing and actor." Victor Banerjee: "The one skill that I had the hardest time learning for a role, was a bit of a joke. You see, I had to learn to speak Urdu for my first film ever in Hindi Shatranj Ke Khiladi, and that too for the mighty Satyajit Ray. I had three Urdu teachers Shama Zaidi, Javed Siddiqui and Saeed Jaffrey, all spewing venom and tearing me apart because Urdu with a Bengali accent is certainly peculiar. Krazzy 4
2008-04-17 07:35:00 Shah Rukh Khan’s successful stint as a guest ‘item’ dance boy continues with this inconsequential comic caper. Do not be misguided by the mis-spelt title into thinking that it is the latest sequel to the non-existent ‘Krazzy’ series: it refers to four mentally ill patients. Raja (Arshad Warsi), Gangadhar (Rajpal Yadav), Dabboo (Suresh Menon) and Dr Mukherjee (Irrfan Khan) suffer from diverse but stereotypical mental conditions and are inmates at ‘We Care Hospital’. Dr Sonali (Juhi Chawla), their psychiatrist decides to treat them to an excursion: an India v England cricket match being played on 15 August, India’s Independence Day. Enroute, the day trippers bond: they sing a song. Prior to arriving at the game, Dr Sonali stops at her office to collect some documents. She gets kidnapped. It is left to our hapless heroes to rescue her and to unravel the mystery behind her abduction. This is a welcome attempt to inject slight sophistica... More About: Krazzy 4
Don't lose innocence Darsheel
2008-04-17 07:30:00 There are offers galore for Darsheel Safary, who wowed audiences with his performance in 'Taare Zameen Par'. But the child actor has turned picky, making producers scout for other talented kids from the same film. Tanay Cheda, who played Darsheel's best friend Rajan in 'Taare...', has bagged a role in ad-maker Vikrma Singh's comedy 'Mastang Mama', which stars Ruslaan Mumtaz. Tanay, who was seen on crutches throughout the film, is from Raell Padamsee's theatre group. But the team of 'Mastang Mama' was initially keen on Darsheel. 'But he seems out of bounds. So we thought why not the guy who played Darsheel's classmate and buddy? We feel Tanay is as good as Darsheel,' said Ruslaan. And the actor hopes to bond big-time with his young co-star before shooting begins April 30. 'And I've all the time in the world to bond with Tanay, since a ripped ligament in my leg has me stationary for a month,' he said. 'Ironically Tanay was on crutches in 'Taare Zameen Par' while I... 2008-04-17 07:26:00 Dia Mirza has been a lost and found case, as she gets back to tinsel town after a hiatus. As the ravishing Dia gets ready for some comic action with 'Krazzy 4', where she plays Arshad Warsi's beau, we get to talk to the lady on her role in the film.. Q.: You are appearing in "Krazzy 4" as a big surprise package. What would you like to say about that? A.: (Smiling) Yeah, you are absolutely right. Actually, it was Jaydeep's idea to introduce me as the trump card at the end of the film. Previously, I have done few comedies, but working in "Krazzy 4" was something different. It's much better than the so- called slapstick and sensitive comedies. You can call it social comedy. Hats off to Jaydeep's effort in depicting a good story with a cool comic touch! Bipashah Basu's Favourite Singer Is Pakistani Singer Atif Aslam
2008-04-16 18:48:00 Actress Bipasha Basu is a fan of Pakistani singer Atif Aslam and she wants him to do the playback for her movie "Race". Just back from Kolkata after shooting for her first Bengali film, "Sab Charitra Kalpunik" (All Characters Imaginary)" by Rituparno Ghosh, Bipasha almost swoons at the mention of her favourite singer. "I am a diehard fan of Atif from the time he sang 'Tere Bin' and 'Doori'. I wish he would sing for me some day. I listen to his albums in my car all the time and so when I heard about the track 'Jaan-e-Jana' in 'Race', I knew only Atif could do it," she said. Bipasha not only recommended Atif for the song but also urged the film's producers to sign up her favourite singer. "And why not? Atif has a deal with Tips, which is producing 'Race'. So this was my golden opportunity to get Atif into one of my films. And now 'Jaan-e-Jana' is my favourite song in 'Race'." Talk about the crackling chemistry th... More About: Singer
'Krazzy 4' case highlights Bollywood's copyright woes
2008-04-16 07:42:00 Musician Ram Sampat's Rs 2 crore out of court settlement with filmmaker Rakesh Roshan for alleged plagiarism has again highlighted Bollywood's ignorance of copyright laws. Many industry people hailed the decision even though some were against the way Sampat went about securing his rights. The industry reacts: Subhash Ghai: "Though I've no right to comment on this case without knowing the inside story I must say we sometimes mistake an inspired re-worked version of a song or film as our own original work of art without realizing the complications of copyright laws. It's no secret that we in this country have been adapting and re-working on music and movies completely ignorant of the laws. This case has warned us about the future. However I'm sure Rajesh Roshan is talented enough not to pick on anyone's work. More About: Highlights , Case , Copyright , Krazzy 4

2008-04-16 07:41:00 Saif Ali Khan may be the new Prince of Bollywood but the title of Mr Charming of Bollywood goes to none other than Shahid Kapoor. Call this an after Jab We Met effect or his single status after he broke off with his longtime girlfriend Kareena Kapoor, but Shahid is now on a roll. One actress who is extremely fond of him is Jiah Khan. The two were cast opposite each other in Star, but apparently since Jiah is also doing Aamir Khan’s Ghajini, she couldn’t chalk out her dates to give her fave actor. Now we hear that Jiah has somehow convinced the Ghajini filmmakers and got herself back in Star. Katrina was also very keen to work with Shahid. She genuinely made attempts to re-s...

I had to pay Ram Rs 2 crores
2008-04-16 07:37:00 "We took a NOC from Sony-Erricson and on 13 December 2008 they gave me a letter of consent. I went about this the right way. My conscience is clear. Towards the end of March I was told the tune belongs to Ram Sampath and not Sony-Erricson. Not in my wildest dreams could I doubt the company's intentions. I was misinformed. I was in a crisis situation and had no choice but to pay up the Rs 2 crores that was asked of me. I'd like to ask Ram Sampat one thing. If his tune was the same as the one in Krazzy 4 wouldn't it have been an equally big hit when it was played as part of the cellphone ad campaign? That too had Hrithik dancing in it… Yes the main hookline is the same. And if Ram Sampat sensed an irregularity why did he wait until my film's release was around the corner?

However the young director, directing the film for his childhood friend Ranbir, completely denies the adapative urge. "My film is certainly not adapted from any source. It's as much The Bachelor as my Tara Rum Pum was Reservoir Dogs." The rumours of Ranbir doing Chris O'Donnel's role from The Bachelor originated from the casting of several prominent leading ladies opposite the young actor. These leading ladies are Bipasha Basu, Minissha Lamba and Deepika Padukone. In fact this week the entire unit has left for a 50-day schedule in Europe.

"It is unfortunate that no actress in the present league is as good as dancing queens of yesteryears like Madhuri or Sridevi. We have a serious dearth of quality dancing actresses now," he says. The two item songs, "Krazzy 4" and "Breakfree" which star, Hrithik Roshan and Shahrukh Khan, respectively have turned out to be key attractions of the film and Jaideep is upbeat about raking in profits using the item songs. "It is really kind of Shahrukh and Hrithik to have danced in the film. It has definitely helped the film in a big way. Girl power in Bollywood
2008-04-14 08:29:00 KAREENA KAPOOR'S sudden price hike has thrown Bollywood into a tizzy. If tinsel town is all about the moolah, then Kapoor seems to be ruling the roost. While fees femme fatales quote are nowhere close to the hunks, the brat pack led by Kareena, is effortlessly breaking all Bollywood myths and setting new benchmarks. Female actors have most often been looked at as the proverbial extra limb in the entire film. Producers were known to hem and haw where the lead heroine's fee was concerned. Casting coups failed because filmmakers did not adjust their budget for the leading lady’s demands. Actress Hrishitta Bhatt is happy. "I think women have definitely come into their own. An open letter to Aamir Khan!
2008-04-14 08:14:00 The Indian national football team captain, Bhaichung Bhutia, barely squeezed in 11 minutes of the mandatory 15 minutes of fame for his principled decision not to carry the Beijing bound Olympic torch in Delhi on April 17. Reason: somewhere between the 10th and the 11th minute his thunder was stolen by actor/director Aamir Khan who stated that he had a different way of wearing his conscience on his sleeve. He would carry the torch but with a prayer in his heart for the people of Tibet. He said, "The Games did not belong to China but to the human race". On screen, it would be called a nuanced piece of method acting. Off-screen it is called positioning. Or is it just a coincidence that among the human race that owns the Games are official sponsors Coca-Cola, a brand Khan carries a torch for through endorsements? Poor man, he will be running multiple overlaps - carrying the Olympic torch as a Coke team member, for humanity's claim to the Games and for the Tibetan cause a... Saadgi- Lata Mangeshkar
More articles from this author:2008-04-12 18:16:00 Lata Mangeshkar coming back for an entire album? And that too with Javed Akhtar? Now that's good enough for one to have mammoth expectations from 'Saadgi', an album that marks the return of Lata after a hiatus. With newcomer Mayuresh Pai composing each of the 8 tracks from the album and Farhat Shahzad, Meraj Faizabadi and Chandrashekhar Sanekar contributing as lyricists, 'Saadgi' is ready to roll. The very beginning of 'Mujhe Khabar Thi' makes it quite obvious that this one is a 'ghazal' in the offering. In fact by the time you are mid-way into song, you start wondering if 'Saadgi' would be an out an out 'ghazal' album, considering the fact it marks the return of Lata who would certainly wish to do something different from what she has done in last few years. Boasting of sensitive lyrics by Farhat Shahzad and a beautiful tune set by Mayuresh Pai, 'Mujhe Khabar Thi' seems like just the right song for Lata to open the album. The thought around 'Saadgi' being a ... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 |
