Bollywood needs more actresses who can dance: Sen
2008-04-15 08:22:00
Director Jaideep Sen whose debut "Krazzy 4" has tinsel town's two most popular actors shaking a leg feels that Bollywood desperately needs actresses who can dance too. "It is unfortunate that no actress in the present league is as good as dancing queens of yesteryears like Madhuri or Sridevi. We have a serious dearth of quality dancing actresses now," he says. The two item songs, "Krazzy 4" and "Breakfree" which star, Hrithik Roshan and Shahrukh Khan, respectively have turned out to be key attractions of the film and Jaideep is upbeat about raking in profits using the item songs. "It is really kind of Shahrukh and Hrithik to have danced in the film. It has definitely helped the film in a big way. It has turned out to be a huge attraction and the audience has really liked them. It has been like an icing on the cake," he says. Jaideep, whose film ran into rough weather after jingle composer Ram Sampat slapped a case of plagiarism ...

Girl power in Bollywood
2008-04-14 08:29:00
KAREENA KAPOOR'S sudden price hike has thrown Bollywood into a tizzy. If tinsel town is all about the moolah, then Kapoor seems to be ruling the roost. Success of Jab We Met has allowed this queen-in-waiting the opportunity to sink her teeth into that elusive pie. And what's more, the producers are falling over themselves to meet her demands at her price! Queen B Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was earlier known to ask for a heavy paycheck. While fees femme fatales quote are nowhere close to the hunks, the brat pack led by Kareena, is effortlessly breaking all Bollywood myths and setting new benchmarks. Female actors have most often been looked at as the proverbial extra limb in the entire film. Producers were known to hem and haw where the lead heroine's fee was concerned. Casting coups failed because filmmakers did not adjust their budget for the leading lady’s demands. Actress Hrishitta Bhatt is happy. "I think women have definitely come into their own. With good storylin...

An open letter to Aamir Khan!
2008-04-14 08:14:00
The Indian national football team captain, Bhaichung Bhutia, barely squeezed in 11 minutes of the mandatory 15 minutes of fame for his principled decision not to carry the Beijing bound Olympic torch in Delhi on April 17. Reason: somewhere between the 10th and the 11th minute his thunder was stolen by actor/director Aamir Khan who stated that he had a different way of wearing his conscience on his sleeve. He would carry the torch but with a prayer in his heart for the people of Tibet. He said, "The Games did not belong to China but to the human race". On screen, it would be called a nuanced piece of method acting. Off-screen it is called positioning. Or is it just a coincidence that among the human race that owns the Games are official sponsors Coca-Cola, a brand Khan carries a torch for through endorsements? Poor man, he will be running multiple overlaps - carrying the Olympic torch as a Coke team member, for humanity's claim to the Games and for the Tibetan cause a...

After gyrating to the sizzling ‘Jaane Kyun’ in Samar Khan ’s Shaurya, Rozza Catalano is now gearing up to set the screen ablaze in Parto Ghosh’s Ek Second Jo Zindagi Badal De. On the personal front, there has been considerable speculation and fabrication about her equation with Saif Ali Khan ever since their relationship soured. We are four siblings- My brother Gioele, sisters Contessa and Dalia, myself and my parents of course. Saadgi- Lata Mangeshkar
2008-04-12 18:16:00
Lata Mangeshkar coming back for an entire album? And that too with Javed Akhtar? Now that's good enough for one to have mammoth expectations from 'Saadgi', an album that marks the return of Lata after a hiatus. With newcomer Mayuresh Pai composing each of the 8 tracks from the album and Farhat Shahzad, Meraj Faizabadi and Chandrashekhar Sanekar contributing as lyricists, 'Saadgi' is ready to roll. The very beginning of 'Mujhe Khabar Thi' makes it quite obvious that this one is a 'ghazal' in the offering. In fact by the time you are mid-way into song, you start wondering if 'Saadgi' would be an out an out 'ghazal' album, considering the fact it marks the return of Lata who would certainly wish to do something different from what she has done in last few years. Boasting of sensitive lyrics by Farhat Shahzad and a beautiful tune set by Mayuresh Pai, 'Mujhe Khabar Thi' seems like just the right song for Lata to open the album. The thought around 'Saadgi' being a ...

Ajay Devgan denied that his film is inspired from the book "The Notebook". We took 'his' word for it. Kajol vouched for the fact that Ajay is the best director she's ever worked with. We took 'her' word for it. Both were confident that their film U Me Aur Hum will work on the sheer power of their on-screen chemistry in a sweet romance. We took 'their' word for it. 'Alas, that's not the case.' Ajay (Ajay Devgan) & Piya (Kajol) fall in love on a cruise liner & get married soon after. A sudden realisation however shakes the foundations of their smooth marriage & both have to come to terms with its terrible consequences. We wish we could have been happier about Ajay- Kajol coming back on screen after so long. We wish the journey of seeing these two otherwise talented actors in Ajay's first directorial venture was more engaging & finally, we wish Ajay had just stuck to making a faithful adaptation of The Notebook, rather than giving it his own spin! Gill to Shah Rukh: Do a Chak de in real life
2008-04-12 07:52:00
Sports Minister MS Gill wants to link Bollywood with sports, which he feels will improve India’s performance at the international arena. He has urged stars to sponsor outstanding sportsperson so that financial resources are not a constraint in their performance. Speaking to media, Gill asked Shah Rukh Khan to sponsor a team or a player and inspire Indian sports as he did in his film Chak De India. “He can begin with sponsoring four women athletes of the Indian relay team. Only Rs 5-10 lakh would be required. I think he can spare that much money for Indian sports.” The minister said Shah Rukh bought a cricket team at the IPL — the Kolkata Knightriders for a staggering $75.09 million — and though it’s a commercial venture, the star can give something back to the country by sponsoring needy sportsperson. Gill has specific players for Shah Rukh; for other stars, like Hrithik Roshan, he said they could pick any player to sponsor. “Except cricket ...

Tragedy strikes Kajol and Ajay
2008-04-12 07:46:00
Shomu Chaterjee, the very renowned director, writer and producer and father of Kajol and Tanisha breathed his last today morning. The maker of some memorable movies like 'Sangdil Sanam', 'Pathar Ke Insaan', 'Ek Baar Muskura Do', 'Fifty Fifty' and 'Lover Boy' leaves behind his wife, Tanuja and two daughters. The biggest irony is that his death happened just one day prior to the release of his son-in-law, Ajay Devgan's dream project 'U Me Aur Hum'. It will be an understatement if we say that Kajol and Ajay Devgan have been striving really hard for the past few months to promote Ajay's debut film as a director, and now the whole family is left in despair just one day before the grand release of the film is a very sad part. The mother-daughter pair of Tanuja and Kajol along with Ajay Devgan have been judging the reality show in Zee, Rock N Roll Family recently. We hope the family comes out of this tragedy very soon!!

Madhuri Dixit: Bollywood misses its dancing queens!
2008-04-11 07:40:00
In fact, Bollywood dance is now recognised as another dance form. Thanks to former leading ladies like Vyajayantimala, Waheeda Rehman, Hema Malini, Jaya Prada, Sridevi, Meenakshi Sheshadri and Madhuri Dixit . But something seems to have changed. Bollywood’s dancing queens have disappeared. And the guys are making the most of it. Be it Hrithik Roshan, Shahid Kapoor or Neil Nitin Mukesh, these men have proved their dancing prowess. Earlier a director would add a dance number to make sure that the audience got its fix. Remember Sridevi seducing Mr India in Kaate Nahin Kat Te or her dance numbers in Chandni and Lamhe? And who can forget Madhuri in Ek, Do, Teen and Dhak Dhak. The actresses who followed from Aishwarya to Preity and Rani to Bipasha, do not exactly have two-left feet, but they never get as many whistles from the front seats. Filmgoers feel that no actress today is an accomplished dancer. But choreographers differ. Veteran Saroj Khan says, "If you show the audie...

I am a born director: Ajay Devgan
2008-04-11 07:38:00
Devgan says for him it was not a major shift from acting to direction as he believes that he is a born director and has that fire within him.   "I started my career directing small budget films, so it was not a major change. In my early days, apart from acting in movies, I tried my hand in production, direction, music composing and all," Devgan says.   "I assisted my father in his directorial ventures several times and both of us knew that I have the flame in me to develop an idea and give it a shape. But then, I became an actor and didn't get the time to direct." Devgan is very positive about the success of his first directorial attempt. He believes he has done justice with the script and has come out with a entertaining story.   "I will continue with direction as it is my favourite hobby or you can say a passion. I will not make a movie only for the sake of it, but will do it only when a right script will come my way," says the actor, ...

Mard Ko Bhi Dard Hota Hai: Hrithik Roshan
2008-04-11 07:36:00
How did you decide on doing the Cinthol ad? Cinthol has always been about the energy. Its philosophy -- don't stop regardless of the barriers -- is very close to my heart. As long as there's movement there's progress. That's what the ad was about. And I went with that flow. Cinthol is being relaunched with my ad. The ad film is bigger than Dhoom 2. In what way? There was more action in the Cinthol ad than in Dhoom 2. It was so much fun. I did kayaking, free-running, bungee jumping, mountain climbing, mountain biking, diving into the ocean from the mountain and rugby …. all crammed into one ad. All this with a bad knee? Well they say adversity is the mother of inventions. So I've found a way. Adversity could also be the mother of further adversities. Ha. It gave me a chance to heal myself by my own formula. I'm doing all it takes. After being ultra-choosy for so long you've decided to work extensively? "So far this year I've said yes only to Anurag Basu's Kites ...

Deepika-Bebo SRK's new item
2008-04-11 07:34:00
SRK's Billoo Barber is going to be one hot affair. We hear that King Khan is planning to rope in both Kareena Kapoor and Deepika Padukone to do an item song together. The movie, directed by Priyadarshan, has SRK playing a filmstar and Irrfan Khan playing a barber from village. The story is apparently inspired from the legend of Krishna-Sudama friendship. Says a source, “Though Kareena and Shah Rukh haven’t done any films together; after Asoka and Don, their chemistry has been sizzling. So when Shah Rukh, who plays a superstar in Billoo Barber, asked her to perform to a song with him, she agreed. Kareena is keeping dates aside and will soon be shooting for the song by next week. ‘Billoo Barber’ also had Amisha Patel playing Irrfan Khan’s wife, but the actress recently bowed out of the project because she presumably did not find her role substantial.

Size doesn't matter: Dia Mirza
2008-04-11 07:33:00
Dia Mirza has not been able to cast her own 'Magic Dia' on the viewers' mind even after being in the tinsel town for many years now!!! But the confidence level of this gorgeous actress has not dropped a bit, and she is still striving hard to prove her credentials as an actress. The glowing beauty will now been seen in Rakesh Roshan's 'Krazzy 4' where she portrays the role of a TV reporter. Ask her whether this role was already taken up by her in the movie, 'Shootout at Lokhandwala', and the girl will say, "I don't care about length of the role or if I have done a role of reporter before or not. I found this role very interesting, in fact I would say that my role is the most prominent and if I wouldn't be there in the film, the film would have been incomplete". Way to go Dia!!!

" I Have Had 50 Drinks In One Go"- Ajay Devgan
2008-04-10 14:34:00
Hi Ajay, It’s your first film as director. What’s running on your mind? Honestly, I’m not nervous at all. I’m just happy that the film is over and everything is ready. The advance response in Delhi and Punjab has been very good. Tell me about how you arrived at the subject of this film? It’s basically an idea I had. It has been with me been over the past 2-3 years. The whole positivity in the story telling is what excited me. How does it feel acting and directing at the same time? It’s not all difficult. It just requires a lot of hard work. How did the thought of direction come in after so many years? I always wanted to be a director. I started off my career as an assistant director to Shekar Kapur before entering as an actor. I was so kicked about direction that I used to even edit at the age of 17. So what would you like to put across with this film? Basically there isn’t anything in particular. At the end of the movie if a couple s...

Bollywood's power couples
2008-04-10 08:20:00
They are beautiful, gooey-eyed and forever in love. The picture perfect, real-life Bollywood couples are emerging as the most coveted brand ambassadors and seem set to test the adage that real-life couples do not sizzle on the silver screen. Among these star couples, the Ajay-Kajol jodi is undoubtedly the most visible one. They are the ones who set the trend of endorsing products together. They make a neat Rs.80 million to Rs.90 million per ad. Looking at them, it becomes clear that being in love and flaunting it was never so lucrative. According to film critic Indu Mirani: "For advertisers, married real-life Bollywood couples are a picture of happy matrimony which is highly sellable." Advertisers already swear by the pull factor of casting such couples and are willing to shell out unheard of amounts to rope them in. The box-office performance of upcoming releases like U Me Aur Hum, Ajay's directorial debut in which he stars with wife Kajol, and Tashan, which has Saif Ali...

SAIF - KAREENA MARRIAGE AFTER 'TASHAN' RELEASE?
2008-04-10 08:17:00
One of the Bollywood's hottest couples - Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor - is anxiously awaiting for their first release 'Tashan ' post their affair. Incidentally, their love blossomed during the making of this movie and might result in their marriage after its release. Though Kareena is quite outspoken, her producer Aditya Chopra has warned her not to talk about the film. It seems Yash Raj believes in keeping things under wrap. Needless to say that the couple has turned out to be a unique selling proposition of the film and Yash Raj is using this hot couple for the promotion of their film. This is enough to create curiosity among Saif and Bebo's fans.  Though the couple has always denied their early marriage report; it seems the buzz will certainly help their first film 'Tashan'. However, the release of the movie depends on the decision either to include or do way with a particular scene of the bikini-clad Kareena Kapoor (who shed huge weight to look ultra-thin in the f...

Bollywood's starry jibes
2008-04-10 08:15:00
Writer Russell Lynes once eloquently waxed, 'If you can't ignore an insult, top it; if you can't top it, laugh it off; and if you can't laugh it off, it's probably deserved.' This holds especially true to Bollywood; high on fragile egos and inflated pride. Even the normally amicable Aamir Khan couldn't escape the temptation of making a mischievous albeit unexpected dig at rival Shah Rukh Khan during a press conference, not too long ago. How 'does it feel to be No 2 after Aamir?' is what the Taare Zameen Par filmmaker wanted to know. Luckily for him, SRK took it sportingly in his stride.

Bollywood's Bachchan hits back at disloyalty charge
2008-04-10 08:09:00
India's film superstar Amitabh Bachchan has hit back at critics who have accused him of being disloyal to the country's entertainment capital Mumbai. After protests by right-wing Hindu nationalists which saw bottles hurled at his mansion in Mumbai earlier this year, the star lashed out this week. "Let them chuck a thousand bottles," Bachchan declared in an interview with Mumbai's tabloid Mumbai Mirror earlier this week. "Let them burn my effigies and conduct morchas (marches) in front of my house. "I am not budging!" The comments came after local politicians said he had shown "little loyalty" to India's financial and movie-making city of 18 million people. Bachchan, who enjoys a huge following in India, was born and raised in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh but he has lived in western Maharashtra's capital Mumbai since 1968. He was dragged into controversy after Mumbai witnessed violent street clashes blamed on the Maharashtra Navnirman Se...

Bollywood on Femina Miss India's 'to do' list
2008-04-09 07:39:00
It was the first time that the three winners of the annual Femina Miss India beauty pageant faced the press, but the girls sure had their lines well rehearsed. Miss India World, Parvathy Omanakuttan says, "The feeling is yet to sink in that we have won the crowns. But, we are not letting that go into our heads." Adds Miss India, Universe Simran Kaur Mundi, "The most important thing is that we have become known faces and the media is following us." And Miss India Earth, Harshita Saxena has the last word. "The moment we were crowned, that's when you feel 'oh! my gosh', we are so close to reality." While the immediate priority is to compete with other beauties across the globe for the international crown, there are no larger noble goals of world peace yet. For now it's Bollywood thats on top of the 'to do' list and as for the most wanted co-star, the wish list goes on.

2008-04-09 07:36:00
Actor Richard Gere , who until recently faced India n obscenity charges for publicly kissing a Bollywood star, called his troubles on Tuesday "a badge of courage."   Gere made headlines when he kissed Shilpa Shetty, winner of the British reality television show "Celebrity Big Brother," several times on the cheek at an anti-AIDS show in New Delhi last year. "It's a badge of somewhat insane courage," he told Reuters during a visit to San Francisco on Tuesday, saying others had also been charged with similar offenses in the past. "It is a very complex society." In March, India's Supreme Court suspended the legal proceedings and granted Gere permission to again travel to and from India.
