Rivals - Trailer
2008-11-28 15:27:00 Lyon, the late 1970s Police inspector François (Guillaume Canet) learns that his brother, Gabriel (François Cluzet), has been released from prison after serving ten years for murder. There’s no happy reunion for the cop and his older brother, but they share a desire to draw a line under the past. Gabriel tries to settle down and François bends over backwards to help him. But real life and the demons of the past catch up with them. For these two brothers divided by the lives they’ve chosen but bonded by blood, the paths they follow strangely seem to lead them to the same impasse. The Bird People In China
2008-11-25 19:07:00 A Salaryman and a world-weary Yakuza travel to a remote part of China in search of Jade, only to discover a life so far untouched and so far removed from their own that it effects them each in unexpected ways. Takashi Miike has become rather a household name in the cult movie circles these days thanks to the increasing popularity of the Asia Extreme cinema, famed for its raw and frenetic violence and disturbed narrative. I myself have come to know Miike through this very strain of film and so you can just imagine my surprise when I happened upon The Bird People In China. With all its promises of “a haunting and poetic masterpiece” and such like it was certainly an intriguing contradiction in terms of director and subject. With such an interesting premise I couldn’t help but wonder if Miike would pull it off. What followed was nearly two hours of what must be the gentlest film I’ve ever seen, and certainly one of the loveliest as the story takes its own time m...

Water
2008-11-25 19:04:00 Deepa Metha's Water is set against the backdrop of civil unrest in India during the 1930's. As Gandhi’s call for passive resistance against British colonial rule grows and the country begins to find itself in turmoil. Set in the city of Varanasi it looks at the life of Hindu widows sent away from their homes after their husband’s deaths. They must live a shadowy existence as "living corpses", because of an interpretation of Hindu text. It is believed by some that when a husband dies a widow who lives on is half dead herself, because her husband made up half of what she was when he was living. The film caused a great deal of controversy when it was filmed with religious hardliners who believed it to be critical of the Hindu faith rioting and sending death threats to the cast and crew. How ever Metha's film is far more a look at social injustice than it is a film designed to be critical of faith. The film starts out with a seven year old child being...

Laurent Garnier - "Panoramix"
2008-11-13 17:21:00 It's not unusual for an artist to be inspired by a panorama, but when you consider this particular Panorama is a club in Berlin and Laurent Garnier is the artist in question, things become a little less usual. Panoramix is a titularly affectionate nod to the birth place of this really rather special Techno track, the release of which proved the fruits of the combination of two beautiful minds. It was Dixon of record label Innervisions who, upon hearing a rough mix of the apty titled A-side track Back To My Roots at the Panorama club, was rightly blown away, suggesting a release on the label. Dixon says of this rare moment "When Laurent played Back To My Roots at Panorama, I immediately had the feeling that I was listening to a classic. It's a very unique timeless production. Not hip, not modern, not "old school". It is also a 12-minute journey that is worth playing for that long. We were very happy that Laurent told me straight away in the club that he would...

Instablogs Interview...Me!
2008-11-11 21:58:00 Yours truly is officially in the inner sanctum of blogging, interviewed as I've been for Instablogs. Yes, if you look here you can find myself versing and conversing on the cut-throat world of blogging, and can pick up some interesting (or not) tidbits on me such as my desire to furnish my life with lavishly expensive and unnecessary tat purely for the sake of it, and that I love nothing more than popping out for a daily paper in me pj's. Indeed, as it says in The Guinea Pig Way, "It's all about me!" But how did I get there and what's the point? Well, here at Late Mag, our delicious designer offshoot, Breathe Modern, has been picked to join the cream of the blogging crop alongside such aforementionable faves as Born Rich, where we culminate at the Instablogs Club for our general goodness or "unique and compelling content." Need I say more? In fact, yes, I will round out saying that this is a mutually beneficial content/traffic exchange, b... More About: Interview

God Told Me To
2008-11-11 21:19:00 When a sniper guns down 14 pedestrians at random on the streets of New York City, cop with a troubled personal life, Peter Nicholas, is up for the job of reasoning with him. Though he doesn’t manage to talk him down from his killing spot atop the water tower, he does elicit a reason from him before he throws himself to his death. As Nicholas investigates further killings across the city it becomes apparent that something connects them all; the killer’s dying confessions reveal that “God told me to.” As the investigation takes shape, the common ground for each killer is having met an elusive long-haired stranger shortly before their crimes, but who is this ubiquitous being and what will Detective Nicholas’s connection to them be? Find out in Larry Cohen’s genre-busting cult classic. New York City in the 70’s had a tendency to be portrayed in the movies and the seemingly endless cop shows of the same era as the perfect site of public paranoia;... More About: Told

Nokia Handset Concept By Heikki Juvonen
More articles from this author:2008-11-11 20:46:00 “Product design should be user-orientated. Good ergonomics, usability, user interface, looks and materials should come standard." - So says Heikki Juvonen, designer of this Nokia concept mobile phone. Whilst Juvonen might well uphold this stance as his work ethic, his attitude is to let technology hang in the balance. That's literally speaking, of course, as this compact handset allows for the bulk workings to rest at the bottom, making for a still-mini yet aesthetically pleasingly chunky design which is high on user-friendly ergonomics, as promised.Visit Heikki Juvonen online at www.heikkijuvonen.com Via: Design Launches Read More More About: Handset , Concept 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 |
