Autumn Roasted Veggie Pasta
2007-09-11 17:28:00
After having overindulged on meat dishes during Restaurant Week, I was ready to reintroduce some vegetarian dishes in my diet. I picked up some beautiful veggies at the organic farmer’s market and was ready to get creative. As autumn seems to be upon us here in the Netherlands, I was craving something warm and creamy, but not too heavy. I remembered a recipe that I had made once years ago from BBC’s Good Food magazine that consisted of roasted butternut squash, tossed with pasta and crème fraîche, and from that I came up with this, based on what I had in house.  Autum n Roasted Veggie Pasta   6 baby squash, a mix of yellow summer squash and zucchini squash 2 large sweet potatoes 3 medium red onions Several cloves of garlic A few sprigs fresh thyme Olive oil Salt and pepper 200 g maccheroni, or other tube pasta A knob of butter 100 g fresh goat’s cheese Handful of toasted nuts, pine nuts, walnuts or slivered almonds w...
Restaurant Week: District V
2007-09-10 20:20:00
Restaurant : District 5 Date: Sunday, September 2nd Time: 19:00 Diners: Myself, Edouard, Samira & Jake  Location: District 5 is located at the corner of a Van der Helstplein in the hip neighborhood of De Pijp. Interior: The first thing that caught my eye when I entered the restaurant was their vintage espresso machine, which kind of sets the tone for the whole restaurant. Lots of vintage or kitsch touches, but nothing too load or busy. My favorite feature by far was their amazing kitchen utensil chandelier! First impression: My first impression was good; District 5 is a relaxed, eetcafé-style neighborhood restaurant. Edouard and I arrived and were seated before Jake and Samira, and when we let them know that they’d be a bit late because they were putting their baby to bed, they weren’t at all bothered. We had a great table next to the open kitchen, so I got to watch all the action throughout my dinner, and marvel at how one chef, two prep cooks...

Restaurant Week: BIHP
2007-09-03 23:50:00
Restaurant : BIHP – Art Food Drinks Date: Saturday, September 1st Time: 21:00 Diners: Myself, Edouard, Martin & Max Location: BIHP has a prime location on Keizersgracht in the middle of the 9 Straatjes district of Amsterdam. The best table in the house affords a canal side view and prime spot for watching the rich and infamous coming and going at The Dylan Hotel, the exclusive 5-star hotel, across the canal; unfortunately that’s about all it has going for it. Interior: Modern, dark and muted tones with low lighting; nothing offensive, but nothing spectacular either. We are still raking our brains as to the purpose of the shaving mirrors above the sinks in both the men’s and women’s bathrooms, though. First impression: “Is it me or do these people not know what they’re doing?” We were in the second wave of diners who all arrived at 21:00 to a full, small and very narrow restaurant. The wait wasn’t long, as most of the fir...

Interior: The interior is stylish, understated and classic. Behind the bar stands a beautiful antique keukenkast, tasteful dining themed photographs hang on the walls, antique light fixtures give off a warm light, even the toilets are well turned out. First impression: My first impression was very positive. We’re very courteously greeted, are jackets are taken and we’re given a choice of tables. The restaurant was starting to fill rapidly, b...

Restaurant Week: Arabic Lounge
2007-09-01 00:50:00
Restaurant :     Arab ic Lounge Date:               Thursday, August 29th Time:              18:00 Diners:            Myself, Maaike, Cristina & Ursi Location: Arabic Lounge is located in the center of Amsterdam on the Spiegelgracht, just a stone’s throw (and a bit) from the majestic Rijksmuseum. Interior: Shabby kitsch à la 1,001 Nights. First impression: As soon as I caught sight of the front of the building and the signage for restaurant, I knew what to expect, a mock-Arabic restaurant serving mediocre food specifically for tourists. The restaurant was done out in Middle Eastern textiles with a dusty hookah here and there, and instead of tables you were seated on couches with low tables. As a result we sat through each course with our plates in our laps, which didn’t really make for comfortable di...

Restaurant :      Restaurant PS Date:                Wednesday, August 28th Time:                19:30 Diners:             Myself, Edouard, Kati & Pepijn Location: PS is located northwest of the city and very near to the Prinseneiland, one of the three Western Islands of Amsterdam. Interior: Rustic with nice splashes of color provided by two beautifully tiled mosaic walls. Old world, but not old-fashioned. First impression: My first impression was good. I arrived a bit earlier then everyone else so I could snap a few photos, and then confirmed my reservation with the host who allowed me to choose my preferred table for the evening, before taking a seat outside on the terrace with a glass of wine to wait for the rest of my party to arrive. Crazy for Sweet Corn
2007-08-29 18:40:00
I don’t know what it is, but I’ve become mad for sweet corn this summer. Maybe it’s the addition of a Weber in our lives, which has given me a hankering for American-style summer foods: juicy rib-eyes, spicy chicken wings and plump sausages, all smoky and charred from the grill, accompanied by various potato dishes, grilled veggies, green salads and of course, sweet corn slathered in way too much butter and sprinkled liberally with sea salt. Or maybe my ever-developing taste buds have just chosen sweet corn to be my food crush of the moment, but whatever it is, I’m enjoying it. As luck would have it, summer is almost at an end here with temperatures dropping to around 50ºF/10ºC at night. Thankfully summer’s delights will still be available a wee while longer and I think I’d better start filling my freezer for the sparser winter months. In between the freezer bags of multicolored berries and other summer goodness, I’ll b...

Restaurant Week in Amsterdam!
2007-08-28 17:45:00
Yesterday,  Restaurant Week , a dining event initiated by the Dutch online restaurant guide DiningCity and inspired by the much lauded New York Restauarnt Week, kicked off here in Amsterdam . From August 27th thru September 2nd, top restaurants in Amsterdam, as well as Rotterdam, Den Haag, Utrecht and Haarlem, offer a 3-course meal for €25!I love to cook and eat at home, but I've never quite gotten over the extravagant feeling that fine dining can give (and probably never will). It was damn hard work getting those reservstions what with 2,500 hits per second, on the day that the online reservation site became avaialable, but I was not to be deturred! I made reservations for just about every evening of the week and then scaled it back to four evenings out. Drinks are (obviously) not inclusive, and are arguably the most expensive part of any meal; so four evenings out this week, even at €25 per meal, will take a nice little chunk out of my wallet.  Regar...
Cashing in on the Last of the Summer Strawberry Bounty
2007-08-27 21:54:00
My boyfriend came home Friday with a kilo of strawberries because they were €1,25 per half kilo, bless him! I grabbed my "ice cream bible" to find a recipe and immediately shoved my ice cream canister into the freezer. As a reward for our all-day housecleaning session, I whipped up David's Strawberry -Sour Cream ice cream on Sunday night.Which tasted even better tonite on the couch, while watching Ugly Betty. And to think, I haven't delved into the Salted Butter Carmel ice cream (my mouth waters just typing those words) or the infamous (and sung about) Malted Milk Ball ice cream.  Yum.

Komkommertijd
2007-08-14 19:36:00
I've been enjoying what is known in the Netherlands as komkommertijd. According to historians, komkommertijd took it's origins from the English word, and it's literal translation, cucumber time. It surfaced for the first time in the Netherlands in 1700, in a Bargoen's dictionary, with the definition: ‘Taylers Holiday, when they have leave to Play, and Cucumbers are in Season.’ According to English slang dictionaries the phrase cucumber time was used mostly by German tailors, to denote the still summer season, when the aristocracy would leave London for their summer residences in the country and the tailors would be without work. The phrase fell into antiquity, however, in the English language; and although the German's continue to use the phrase Sauregurkenzeit ("sour cucumber or pickle time"), it surfaced a century later in the 19th century, putting the proposed German origins of the phrase cucumber time into question. Wherever the origin, for me it...
Setting the Mood
2007-08-08 17:11:00
This beautiful mood board was created by a friend of mine to help inspire me in the creation of cupcakes for her wedding. It’s been used as wallpaper for my laptop at work and now hangs on my fridge at home, and I still find it just as breathtaking as I did when it first landed in my inbox three months ago. I love the splashes of bright color, how the beautiful and mysterious Frida lends the presence of a wise woman, and how paired with the festiveness of the swirling flamenco skirts and the haunting exquisiteness of the Día de los Muertos relics, the entire collage gives you a feeling of Old World traditions, something both happy-sad and beautiful.  It is these particular images that give me a feel for the mood that she wants to convey to her guests and loved ones, even more so then the examples of cupcakes interspersed throughout the collage. She has put all her love and creativity into planning her wedding to her beloved and I intend to put the same care and con...

A whopping 2 years old!!!It was two years ago today that I bravely published my first two posts and became a blogger. There have been lots of stops and starts, long pauses, changes of locale and design, and hell it's still a work in progress, but I'm still doing it and loving it. Thank you to my friends and family for reading these pages when no one else did, and thank you to all my new friends in the blogosphere who have taken the time to comment or email their support and well-wishes. May Mevrouw Cupcake blossom and flourish for as long as I continue to enjoy myself!--- Mari

I'm just home from work,  I haven't eaten anything since lunch (tsk, tsk) and E's going to the pub with his colleagues before coming home to cook me dinner.     It doesn't matter that the sun is shining everywhere, but here and the UK; I've been pining for this book ever since I laid eyes on it. I always said I needed an ice cream maker like I needed a hole in my head, but I've ignored good sense and gone and bought one anyways. Now I'll have to pay a personal trainer to save me from myself, but I don't care...I need to eat Chocolate-Raspberry ice cream (page 30) with Salted Butter Caramel suace (page 174)! Heaven help me, there's no turning back.

On Girlfriends, Ice Cream and My Soon to be Disappering Waistline
2007-07-19 22:04:00
Good gravy, can two weeks fly by or what?! In preparation for my best girl Carrie's arrival, I abandoned my post for a scrub brush and other such cleaning helpmates, and of course once she arrived we were busy with the business of living, i.e. eating, drinking and riding our bicycles around Amsterdam. I love having a friend over for a visit, it gives me an excuse to take off work and do some great impromptu “research” on this fine city I live in, all the while consuming some serious calories in its delicious eateries! Fun, fun, fun! Whilst I was out and about having all that fun, my 50+ blog feed exploded with new posts. It’s taken me two days to read (and clip) all that good stuff, but it was nothing less than inspirational as always. Most inspirational was a post from that culinary couple over at delicious:days on ice cream; and not just any ice cream, but my least favorite flavor ice cream, walnut ice cream. Let it be said that after looking at the mouthwaterin...

Lemon Cake to Chase Away the Blues
2007-07-05 20:01:00
I’ve been pretty despondent this week about the state of the weather in the Netherlands. It’s basically been raining for the last month (yes, four weeks ladies and gentlemen, I counted), with very little sun and a whole lot of grey skies. I don’t do well without sunshine, and you might ask yourself why then do I live in Northern Europe? This is the very same question I ask myself at times like this. Ever since I bought my beautiful Weber, the weather has been most foul. I have to swallow a thick green glob of envy, every time I read about those lucky folks (I won’t mention names) out there in the blogosphere enjoying fun-filled barbeques under the sun with their friends. So far, we’ve only grilled for two, almost always under threat of showers (or standing in the rain) and eaten the grilled bounty inside at the dinner table. Yesterday was no exception to the rule, but I thought weather be damned, I’m getting the Weber out! I wanted t...

The Widow on Pita
2007-07-04 22:30:00
Last weekend, I got to enjoy E’s company for the entire weekend. Unfortunately we spent more time running around the dread Ikea and attending social functions instead of lying on the couch hiding out from these ongoing rains that Northern Europe seems to be suffering in place of summer sunshine. In spite of E’s weekend reprieve from overtime hours, he’s still been working late during the last week, leaving me to play the grieving widow. The only perk, if you can call it that, is that I’ve been forced to get creative in the cooking-for-one category. It’s been a good while since I’ve practiced the fine art of the single girl menu, and I wanted to avoid the “oh, I’ll just have pasta” routine and try something new and tasty. Behold the mountain of pita!  There is a kosher pita bakery in Amsterdam-Zuid that I’ve been meaning to visit for years, but just never got around to. Since changing jobs, it’s lit...
Missing the Boat on the Sweetest Thing
2007-06-30 17:22:00
Life came between me and my entry for SHF this month. It’s a bummer really, as I’ve wanted to participate in this particular blog event for quite a while. The theme for this month’s event was cravings, something which I have my fair share of on a regular basis. That being the case, however, when Is My Blog Burning pinged my feed with The Domestic Goddess’ post for this month’s event, my greedy brain ground to a halt. What is that sweetest thing that I crave? I thought long and hard about it, hemmed and hawed, baked for other events, but never really came up with an answer. I mean I love ice cream, especially combined with cake; you can get me out of bed for that combo any day of the week. For that matter any cake will do, and that is probably the craving I have more often then not. As we all know, the more cakes you bake and eat, the bigger your craving for the sugar in them grows. I have to refrain myself from boredom baking as it is, to keep my...

TGRWT#3 – Strawberry Shortcakes with a Coriander Buttermilk Biscuit and B
2007-06-29 18:51:00
I’m pretty ambivalent on the subject of molecular gastronomy; I guess I’m just not trendy enough when it comes to my food. I would say, however, the smell and taste of what I eat is of utmost importance to me, so in essence I should be into what I see as the culinary cultivation of the best combination of both things, right? I guess I prefer a little mystery and magic with a touch of intuitiveness, instead of scientific prowess, in the kitchen. Whatever the case, where would we be without science and who am to turn my nose up at the pursuit of excellence in the kitchen? When I read about this month’s They Go Really Well Together event, I think I pretty much knew from the get-go that I wanted to make some sort of strawberry shortcake. Like Chubby Hubby, I’m very susceptible to suggestion, and had just seen a strawberry shortcake recipe featured on Baking Bites. I thought on it, consulted my darling (culinary schooled) girlfriend Rachel, thought on it som...

My Answer to the Eat & Drink Challenge
2007-06-26 18:26:00
Truth be told, I’m not sure that muffins top my favorite breakfast foods list. When I still lived in the States I would indulge in whatever breakfast treat my local Starbucks was pimping, which was usually a muffin or scone; but since I moved here 9 years ago, my breakfast inclinations lean more towards quick and healthy, slow sweet and savory or savory-savory, and happen at home vs. elsewhere. Quick and healthy for me constitutes a bowl of bran flakes with whatever fruit is lying about in the fruit bowl and full-fat milk; or my choice as of late, a berry soy yoghurt smoothie with additional fiber, linseed oil and spirulina added. Slow and sweet is a big Sunday breakfast consisting of blueberry buttermilk pancakes topped with pure maple syrup, and sometimes bacon and/or eggs for good measure. Savory-savory means toast, slathered in butter, and topped with Tartex vegetarian paté, Dutch farmer’s cheese, or even better, Dutch farmer’s cheese over a spicy smear ...

Saturday Afternoon Treasure Hunt
2007-06-24 23:43:00
This weekend I had my heart set on perusing the Haarlemmerstraat/Haarlemmerdijk area, just west of Central Station in the direction of Westerpark, in Amsterdam. I’ve always enjoyed window shopping there and I knew that quite a few new storefronts had opened up in the area since last I’d had a leisurely stroll through it. The Haarlemmerstraat runs from the Singel to the Korte Prinsengracht, and from there begins the Haarlemmerdijk which extends on until the Haarlemmerplein. These streets offer a fantastic stretch of shopping, restaurants, cafes, and bars. I’m positive that for those lucky enough to live in the neighborhood of this bustling thoroughfare; it’s rare to have to leave the immediate area in search of something that that couldn’t be found in the Haarlemmerstraat or Haarlemmerdijk. These streets have more then their fair share of bakeries, delicatessens (yesterday I visited shops specializing in Asian, Portuguese, Spanish and Italian foods), gre...

A Widow's Lament
2007-06-21 19:01:00
Our household has been halved in the last week, due to pressing deadlines at the games studio where E. works. It's gotten so bad that I even BBQ'd for one last Sunday! Since I last checked in I've been baking for a friend and for an upcoming blog event, and I will definitely be making time to share some of this and more soon; but for now I'll leave you with this snapshot of my "widow's dinner" from yesterday. It was scrummy and I was happy to be able to eat it on the couch, and stretch out afterwards to watch two films I'd been eyeing for quite a while at my local video store.  This weekend I'll have E. back again, but for now, I'll pout (wink-wink, nudge-nudge) and spoil myself  with lovely "widow's diners."

A Gem of a White Chocolate
2007-06-15 21:22:00
Recently a friend turned me on to the Choco lat e Warehouse site, a Dutch webshop for hobbyist bonbon makers who want to purchase the necessary ingredients without having to buy massive quantities at one time. They sale all their chocolate in one kilo packaging, which is perfect for my baking purposes too! I've got a little obsession going with perfecting white chocolate (Swiss meringue) buttercream, and this means that white chocolate itself must be of the highest quality. As far as my taste buds are concerned, a well-balanced white chocolate is not cloyingly sweet, nor too milky in flavor. In an effort to find the elusive combination that I desire, I 've been working my way through white chocolates from different chocolate houses; so far I've used Callebaut, the revered Valrhona, and this week Opal from Chocovic's Selección Couvertures. I was intrigued when I came across this 31% cacao white chocolate hailing from Catalonia, one of my favorite regions in Spain, on t...

We have a pretty tremendous garden size-wise, and I’m being modest. It is, however, not a very well-tended garden; but it is my hope that at some point in the not so distant future, I’ll actually get down to the garden center to get the tools that I need and make it a more manicured affair. In spite of the lack of maintenance with exception to E.’s regular mowing efforts, it’s a pretty splendid thing to have a garden that is almost as big as your entire apartment, especially in Amsterdam (and not too far from the center). We lucked out, to say the least. Last summer, we did not really make use of our beloved oasis as we should have and I’ve been bound and determined that that wouldn’t happen this summer. Not to mention, I need/want to associate my garden with something other then the place I where I went to smoke cigarettes (notice the past tense here, it’s been 13 days and counting). Ever since we moved into this apartment, all I’ve ...
Summer Pulses
2007-06-09 21:28:00
It’s easy for me to get on a health kick when summer is engulfing me in a plethora of fresh fruits and veg. I capitulate completely, I want to be healthy, bring me fresh pea pods, bitter radicchio, jewel colored berries and plump Portobello mushrooms. I need no cream, no butter, just divinely fruity olive oil, salt, pepper, and chili flakes (I like it spicy). I know when winter is again at my door that I’ll be digging out the casserole dishes and luxuriating in dairy products to bind my pastas, potatoes and eggs, but for now I want to taste every fresh morsel that Mother Nature has to offer.  I love the ease of summer dinner salads, the combining of pulses or grains, with fresh herbs, juicy tomatoes, marinated vegetables, and other delicacies. Molly over at Orangette inspired me to get out one of my favorite summer recipes for lentil salad. It’s fantastically easy and can be made with freshly cooked or canned lentils, depending on the amount of tim...

I ♥ Brunch

brunch (brŭnch) n. A meal typically eaten late in the morning as a combination of a late breakfast and an early lunch. [br(eakfast) + (l)unch.] brunch'er n. Lunch for me is not such an exciting endeavor, just give me a salad and I’m happy; dinner, on the other hand, can be a grandiose and indulgent affair; but nothing launches my weekend into the stars like a big meal at the beginning of the day, which for me means around from 1 pm on.Brun ch is the word on my mind. Brunch after hitting the markets on Saturday morning (once upon a time I rose early on Saturdays), Sunday brunch after a diabolically late night out, or if you’re lucky enough/lazy enough/social enough, brunch twice in one weekend. I’ve come up with some hare-brained schemes in my day, just ask anyone who knows me; but none as crazy (in hindsight) as giving up drinking, smoking and eating all in one go! Lessons learned? You can take away the Lucky Strikes, you can even take away my daily glass(es) of rosé/white/red, but don’t mess with my food! After just 48 hours, which admittedly were not even that bad, I caved at the smell of frying garlic. Nope, fasting is just not for me; maybe some other time, or better yet, maybe in my next life. I admit wholeheartedly that I didn’t do myself any favors by continuing to read through the newest addition to my cookbook library; nor by browsing through the mouthwatering pages of some newly discovered (to me) fellow food bloggers. What can I say, except I LOVE food and I’m glad to be back in the land of the living and eating! Cigarettes are now a thing of the past (7 days and counting), wine and coffee are on vacation till July 1st, but my one...

I've changed sides! Yes, indeed I've left Blogger, my loyal first love in the world of weblogs, behind for a bit more creative freedom (I hope) and the uber-slick look of web publisher Squarespace. I feel a bit like I do when I switch beauticians; a tad bit guilty, kind of exhilarated and wondering did I get more bang for my buck or not? I will miss the old Mevrouw Cupcake style, but I hope that next generation Mevrouw Cupcake will become just as much me as her Blogger counterpart. Still so many changes to come, but for the moment I'm happy to just to be here.
