Red Dates (Jujube)
2011-11-16 16:00:00
When I was doing my groceries shopping at Langley Farm Market, I saw something new to me. It's labeled as winter dates (in English). I bought some to try. The winter date is just 99cents per pound. I think they are fresh red dates because they tasted like dried red dates but in a milder version. Red dates are also known as Jujube. I noticed that the more brown they are, the sweeter they are.

Macau Vanilla Custard Tart
2011-10-24 16:00:00
Complete Disclosure: This post is based on a complimentary newly published book for review. These Macau Vanilla Custard Tart are wonderful treats for tea time. The aroma of vanilla perfumed the whole kitchen when these were baked in the oven. This recipe is from a new culinary and traveloque book by Mary Kate Tate and Nate Tate called Feeding the Dragon. We get a lot of newly published books for review offer but I normally decline the offer. But this book caught my eye because it's a traveloque through China.

2011-10-14 16:00:00
I was craving for Vietnamese dry mix noodles with lots of shallots and sweetish soy sauce. So, I got the boys to agree to go to Pho Lan for lunch. However, I'm not sure if Pho Lan has that dish or not. Anyone has suggestion of where can I this the dish? Anyway, when we arrived at Pho Lan's parking lot, it's full. So, we tried to park at the Richmond Center parking lot and walk over. Just becareful not to be caught doing that. Unfortunately, the parking lot is full too despite it's size. So, I have no choice to find another Vietnamese restaurant.

Happy Thanksgiving to all Canadian readers. Canadian Thanksgiving was instituted in 1957 by the Canadian Parliament as a day of general thanksgiving for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed. This post is about the celebration of the harvest of apples. The second annual Applepalooza took place at the Gilbert Road Community Garden at the south end of Gilbert Road and Dyke Road. This is also the location for the South Dyke Sharing Farm where the apple orchard is. It was a bright sunny fall day which was a blessing.

Kuo Hua: An All-Taiwanese Supermarket
2011-01-20 05:26:00
After trying for the first time in my life Ba Wan in Yuen-Yuen, Suanne and I decided to drop by Kuo Hua on the way back home. We wanted to come here to but pre-packaged Ba Wan to try at home. It was 4SlicesofCheese who told us that Kuo Hua carries it in the new refrigeration sections that they had installed. I don?t think many people who doesn?t live in Richmond knows about Kuo Hua. I could be wrong. This is even though they are located on No 3 Road just next to the Real Canadian Superstore. Kuo Hua is one of many Asian supermarkets in Richmond. Can you name all of them? Let me try: T&T in President Plaza: Undoubtedly the most well-known of all supermarkets which had recently been sold to the Real Canadian Superstore Osaka in Yaohan Center: Affiliated with T&T; it?s like T&T with a Japanese twist. Rice World on Garden City: Mostly products from Mainland China Big Crazy on No 3 Road: Mostly products from Mainland China There are many smaller ones like Supermarke...

Yuen-Yuen Cafe: Ba Wan and Other Taiwanese Food
2011-01-19 16:32:00
In the past couple of months we had quite a bit of attention put on Hong Kong Style Cafe s, Malaysian Cuisine and Filipino Cuisine. I think I had neglected Chinese Cuisine somewhat but I think it will pick up again next month when I set my focus on getting the 8GTCC project going again. But there is one cuisine I am not very familiar with and it is the Taiwanese cuisine. This is despite that we had 41 dine out posts categorized under the Taiwanese keyword. Quite a lot isn?t it? My curiosity was piqued last weekend when Suanne blogged about a dish she learned from the Richmond Community Kitchen called Ba Wan (link here). I had never heard of that dish before ? not even after blogging on 41 Taiwanese restaurant. What caught me by surprised is the reactions from readers on that post. We often get dozens of comments for restaurant posts but recipe posts doesn?t draw nearly as many comments. On a very good day, it will draw about 5 comments but the post on Ba Wan drew 20 comments. So I...

New Town Bakery and Restaurant in Chinatown, Vancouver
2011-01-18 17:43:00
It seems that calling this restaurant sketchy and dodgy did not deter some of us from showing up for this impromptu chowdown. I made sure that I set the expectations clearly up front with those who responded to my call to join Suanne and I for lunch in the New Town Restaurant in Chinatown . I did not want people to look at me funny for choosing a place like this. I am saying this because I was once here some years ago when I saw needles in the washroom. We also came here after our lunch at Maxim?s to buy some buns and we noticed that some of their customers were down and out (if you know what I mean). So that formed an impression in me that this is not exactly a family restaurant. To me I am no snob when it comes to food. I will go where there is something to learn about even if the food is nothing great. Sorry you gotta take this blog as it is ? warts and all. I don?t usually got to fancy schmancy places. I am just fascinated with the New Town Bakery and Restaurant because it...

Meat and Bread: Bakkwa and Croissant
2011-01-17 18:54:00
You know what is the hottest restaurant in Vancouver right now? It is this restaurant called Meat and Bread located in Gastown. It seems everyone is raving about it (despite the high prices) ? and I am not sure exactly why. The food there is simple, no frills ? just meat and bread. The choices you get there can be counted with just one hand (just four items!). Given what they offer on the menu, I think they could even sell it off a food cart. They don?t need a restaurant for this. I am sure the food is good and that plays a big part in its popularity. But maybe too its the simplicity of the food. I don?t know ? I still have not figured that out. No, I have not tried Meat and Bread (the restaurant) yet. I will some day when I get the time to go downtown to try it. I just need to convince myself that it is worth the trip going all the way there just for meat and bread. But for now ? I?ll just do my own meat and bread. I think I want to write a series on ?Meat and Bread?! Suann...
Chocolate Cream
2011-01-16 18:00:00
For dessert, Cecile made a Creme Au Chocolat or Chocolate Cream in the Caring Place Community Kitchen. This is like chocolate pudding. The Chocolate Cream did not turn out as desired due to excessive cornstarch added which made it looked lumpy and not smooth. Nevertheless, this is a simple recipe with just 3 ingredients. The trick is to add in the right amount of cornstarch to get the right consistency.
