How certain smells, tastes or textures stir memories. Recollections that were lost, found, mourned and replaced all because of something you ate.photo by photodigs Last week, I bought a “Cuties” box of clementines at my favorite Asian market, it only cost $3.99.When I was a child, I would visit my Grandmama in Gary, Indiana for the summers. A neat woman back in the day. She would buy candy at Kmart or Wal*Mart or some other “mart” location that sold bags of candy two-for-a-dollar.Circus Peanuts, Candy Corn, Red Licorice Bits, (not the whole sticks of licorice, just its bits) and especially Orange Slices helped Grandmama give the candy lady down the block a run for her money. Essene the grain....
2007-11-05 05:11:00 Cranberry-Raisin Essene BreadSoft wheat berries were my first.Hard wheat berries are more for the yeast breads.Oat groats are not really in the same league.Rye never entered the picture.Like my husband, once the Durum wheat’s distant Egyptian relative sprouted into me life, there were no others.Essene the grain at the end of the tunnel and its name was Kamut.I’m certain I’m committing a bit of blasphemy. Casually, chatting on the subject of an ingredient used in the Bible’s Essene Bread. If I am, I beg the powers that be… please forgive. But really, how can you blame me? It was a close race. Both grains are economical, easily sprout and work well in Essene Bread. But my Kamut is one high protein, vitamin E, magnesium, zinc-packed grain.Kamut has a much richer and buttery flavor than the sweet wheat berries, which could explain it’s somewhat higher fatty acid content. Oh well, I ramble. Not that wheat berry is the re-bound boyfriend. It has qualities that make it appealing ... More About: Grain , The G

If I could afford it, I would be a career student. I'm not sure if I'm curious by nature or by design. As I grow older I find myself doing things that I would have, in the past, shunned away from. Kitchen NotesSprouting, for instance, was one of those things. It intimidated me, I think I tried it once, it didn't work out, so I moved on my merry way.Well, I'm a bit wiser and I thought I would give it a go. The "tricks" my appliances have played
2007-10-30 04:06:00 The timer went off, I heard the slight humming on the counter, but alas the “trick or treat” pleas fell on deaf ears. My blender, food processor, and, the leader of the pack, dehydrator had threaten to prank me if treats were not produced. And low and behold, they made good on it, several times over. What better time than the day before for Halloween to showcase the raw food calamities at the Daily Raw Café. Of course, more times than not, my kitchen and I play well together, creating tasty treats to keep those impish machines at bay. Fortunately, the odds are in my favor of making something edible. I won’t divulge exactly what went awry with each dish. I consider them works-in-progress and they just haven’t found their way yet. Besides, I learn more from the "tricks" than I do the "treats."Then again, if it weren't for those mischievous appliances giving me these culinary mishaps, I would not have anything to blog for today now would I? Food Teaser
2007-10-22 21:21:00 Chocolate Almond Butter Mousse TorteDo you know what a teaser is? A teaser tells you that a movie is coming to a theater in the near future.I have never heard of a food teaser but there's a first time for everything. From time to time I am going to do food teasers. I will post a photograph of a dish (that I have made) and its name and in the (very) near future I will post the recipe. I won't do this often, just for the special recipes. ;)Which ones are special? The recipes where I surprise myself. The ones that I say OMG to.Why in the world am I doing this? Well, I'm a scheduled person. In my calendar, I have all the recipes I'm posting until the end of October, but there are those special recipes that I want to showcase before I'm ready and that's where the teasers come into play. I'm awful, I know. And please if you think it's too cruel, if you have to have the recipe right now and simply can't check back a day, (or two or three) later, let me know.Viva Raw Food s!Terilynn More About: Teaser
Seaweed Chowder
2007-10-22 04:51:00 My husband first made a variation of this chowder when we first adopted a raw lifestyle a few years back. I remember loving the taste and texture of the creamy broth. It has a nice balance between the rich, deep flavor of the walnuts and mildness of the seaweed.Use kitchen shears to cut the Wakame into super, super tiny pieces. They expand at least ten times their size and you don't want have to chew through seaweed to enjoy the chowder.Seaweed Chowder 3 cups water1 cup walnuts1 tablespoon yellow miso (optional)¼ cup Wakame, cut into tiny pieces1 carrot, sliced½ tablespoon sea salt1 In a blender, combine walnuts, miso and water until you achieve a creamy milk consistency.2 Pour in a large bowl, add Wakame, carrots and sea salt.
