Jeera Rasam (Jeerge Saaru)
2008-06-06 20:29:00 This is a typical Rasam recipe from Karnataka. This is also a simple recipe that does not require lot many ingredients and can be done in a jiffy. Instant Mango Shrikhand stuffed in Chapathi (Burrito style)
2008-05-30 05:05:00 I have always steered clear from making Shrikhand from scratch mostly because of the notion that it is laborious, time intensive and also it is loaded with calories. Now these statements are true and not a pre-conceived one. My mother and grand-mother would make Shrikhand on special occasions the traditional way, by first preparing home ... Matar Paneer with Methi
2008-04-30 20:26:00 Paneer is one thing which I dislike the most and no matter how much I try, I cannot get to like it. Pineapple in Spicy Sweet Coconut Curry (Ananas Sasam)
2008-04-24 10:55:00 We have been married for quite a few years now, long enough to understand and predict each others tastes, likes and dislikes. Or so I thought, until a routine trip to the grocery proved that I had concluded a bit too soon. I have a penchant for the sweet taste; he on the other hand ... Beans and Dill in Coconut Curry ( Beans Ghashi)
2008-04-21 13:00:00 Dill is a favorite at our house and so I put it in things like curries, rice, rotis etc. Dill is available in bulk during the Fall and Spring season in the Indian groceries and so we use it the most then. Red Chori Palak Curry / Azuki Bean Spinach Curry
2008-04-17 00:40:00 It is alarming the way the food prices are sky rocketing these days. Every time we go to the grocery, we notice an increase in the price even for the essential commodities like bread, pulses, milk, vegetables etc. We seem to be getting lesser and lesser for the same amount each year. I personally feel the prick most when I see the prices of Toor Daal and Uraad Daal go. These were the most frequently used Daals at home growing up and it is painful to see their prices shoot up at such alarming levels. Anyways, the silver lining about this is that it pushes me to look for other alternatives and try out something new and different. On one such escapade to the Indian grocery I saw this Red Chori and after some keen contemplation decided to give it a try. I did not want to do anything fancy for the first time, so I decided to make the usual curry. I did not regret the decision as I liked the taste and the flavor seemed pretty familiar too. I feel that when this is correctly cooked nea... More About: Bean , Curry , Spinach
Dosa using Oats, Urad and Rice Flours
2008-04-14 19:34:00 Friday night’s dinner is usually Idli or Dosa at our house and we enjoy it. For one it’s the beginning of the weekend and second nobody has complaints about the taste. This works well for me as I do not have to toil in the kitchen for a long time and the only thing to prepare is the chutney. I think it is a good way to relax with the family, chat, and unwind while looking forward for the weekend. The only caveat here is that I have to remember to soak the Daal and rice Thursday morning itself before I go to work, that way I can grind the batter after I get back home. I know, I know, I let the batter rest for 24 hours at least especially during winters so that it ferments well. Blame it on the rush hour mornings I forget to do it many a times. So I resort to using the rice and urad flours to make the Dosa batter. and urad flours to make the Dosa batter. This is my contribution to Srivalli’s Dosa Mela event at Cooking4allseasons. Eggless Banana Bread
2008-04-10 05:14:00 Call me looney, but one of the things that I cannot stand is seeing the semi ripe bananas turn over ripe and mushy. The house fills up with its aroma and anytime you walk around it you get that banana ish (?) smell. Next thing I know nobody at home wants to eat it and I don’t feel like throwing it away either. So I fall into this quandary of thinking what to do with it and how best to use it wisely. For me that means things that involves no laborious work or no deep frying. So the only idea that I can think of is a cake, an eggless one to be more precise. Not that it is healthy, but at least it is easy one to put together and also no baby sitting involved while cooking. But wait, that is not the end there is more. So while gorging on the cake I constantly fret about the unnecessary calories I am eating and also hide the weighing scale, so that I don’t weigh myself the next day.Groan** I know, I am unnecessarily complicating things, but folks please help me out here. ... Non-food: Rush Hour Mornings, Traffic jams and Murphy’s Law
2008-03-29 16:28:00 You know Murphy’s Law “Whatever can go wrong will go wrong, and at the worst possible time, in the worst possible way” (Source:Wiki). Now this adage fits the Rush hour mornings and Traffic jams like a glove. It is the same old story of traffic jam, but a new twist is thrown in every morning to keep things from getting dull and boring. Who says that only PMS and in-laws can set you in a bad mood? Monday: The coveted weekend is over and you are in a grouchy mood already. It does not help that you have a meeting to attend first thing in the morning. And lo behold you are stuck in a jam because of an accident ahead involving 3 cars. The jam almost 5 mile long is so bad that you are grinding your teeth but still have the nerve to do a Physics calculation and dramatically conclude that you could reach the office faster if you jumped off the car and ran instead of going at 5 miles/hour in the car. Tuesday: As usual you discover that the traffic is moving at 15 miles/hour. You ... More About: Food , Jams , Hour
Healthy Breakfast: Pumpkin Idli (Dudhi Idli)
2008-03-27 20:18:00 I was introduced to the new concept of Pumpkin Idli only after my wedding. My mother-in-law had prepared it early in the morning for breakfast and I had it with some ghee. Suffice to say that the taste was totally out of this world and I became a big fan of it ever since. It has a sweetish taste because of the pumpkin but when combined with salt, coconut and green chillies, the Idli imparts totally unique flavor. Pumpkin is chock full of goodness. Not only is pumpkin loaded with Vitamin A and antioxidant carotenoids, particularly alpha and beta-carotenes, it’s a good source of Vitamins C, K, and E, and lots of minerals, including magnesium, potassium, and iron. This along wit some fruits, orange juice/ milk/yogurt can serve as a well balanced breakfast and keep us going through out the day. This is my entry to Balanced Breakfast WBB#20 hosted by the wonderful and talented Mansi. Ingredients 2 cups grated pumpkin 3/4 cup of idli rava (not the upma rav, adjust according t... 2008-03-26 05:09:00 The “Arusuvai Friendship Chain” was started by Latha and Lakshmi at The Yum Blog along with Bharathy of Spicy Chilly and Bhags of Crazy Curry. Latha from “Masala Magic” continued the Arusuvai friendship chain in USA. Thanks to you all for this wonderful idea. Thanks Seema for thinking about me and sending me this “Surprise Ingredient ”. Seema had sent this to me promptly almost a month ago, in fact at the right time to participate in Sunita’s Think Spice… Think Star Anise Event. But I was not able to blog about this as the camera was not at my disposal and I was mainly working off of my draft section (err, that is a valid excuse isn’t it?). Sorry about the delay Seema. Sweet Pongal
2008-03-20 14:28:00 One convenient reason why blogging makes it worthwhile for me is because I can refer to my own recipes online anytime for years to come. I know it sounds silly, but it is true. A few days ago while contemplating what to make for dinner; it occurred to me that it had been a while since I made the delicious Cheesy Vegetable Pulav. I decided to make it that evening, but could not remember the exact ingredients that went into the masala and so I scrambled to check for the recipe in my old diary. I usually scribble down recipes on-the-go in my diary with a handwriting that could give even the most ‘competent’ doctors a run for their money. Anyway I froze when I realized that I had not penned down this recipe and I thought that I had lost it for ever. I was about to yell at myself but as eureka moment realized that I had blogged that recipe and that I could refer to it at my own site. Boy! It was a strange feeling but suffice to say that I was pleased with myself! Anyway, the ... More About: Sweet

Tindora/Tendli Rice
2008-03-12 16:39:00 I remember what my mother would say about cooking: “thinking is the hard part, while the actual cooking and cleaning is the easy part”. I did not think of it much then, but now that I shoulder the responsibility of cooking I totally understand what that means. First of all coming up with a menu that satisfies everybody’s taste is challenging, and then factoring in conditions like, “will the menu item 1 go well with menu item 2, will the kid eat it, will it be time consuming etc” Phew! Then it is totally going in circles. As a result many evenings I make something that is new and easy, that way it is a change (not always a good one though) from the usual, breaks shackles from the routine cooking and saves me some ‘complicated’ thinking. J One such dish is this Tindora Rice . I had some Tindora in the fridge that was demanding attention but the quantity was not sufficient enough to make a Tindora Fry. So I decided to make rice instead. Long strips of tindora are fried...
Easy Zucchini Garlic Sabji
2008-03-03 23:23:00 Dear Husband’s perpetual complaint is that the vegetables here in the United States, especially Zucchini have a sweetish taste to them and accents even more when cooked. He complains that it tends to ruin the taste of the dish and tends to steer clear from that vegetable. I on the other hand love it; and also being the sweet toothed person can never understand what the plight is all about. I eat hot and spicy food too, but also like the sweetish taste the vegetables have to offer when cooked. “Oh no, look what happened, I mistook Zucchini for a cucumber and bought it again” I said. “Yeah right, you need to come up with a better story than that” he said Wonder why he doesn’t buy my cucumber theory anymore! J Speaking of which, the food blogosphere has been raining cats and dogs with awards and I am thankful to Vanamala of My Kitchen World and Seema of My Randap for passing this award to me. “Nice Matters Award is for those bloggers who are nice people; g... Non-food: Nostalgic Moments…. Simpler Times
2008-03-01 15:41:00 One of our favorite pastime is watching some old 80’s and 90’s Hindi, Kannada songs, or an old movie snippet on YouTube. Both me and Dear Husband are from Bangalore and we share similar backgrounds be it in terms of food, school, friends, movies, Bangalore city etc. Even though our choice and taste of songs do not resonate, we still enjoy the moments of those good old days. Listening to old songs brings back fleeting memories, whereas visually looking at the song streams through old memories and helps gush out those warm, comforting time of our lives. Never mind the political, economical impact YouTube is having on the mainstream media, for us it is a time machine that has enabled us to virtually re-live the moments we had may be 10-15 years ago. Invariably after viewing the old songs we have an outburst of conversation about the movie, the plot, the actors, restaurants, family, friends etc. It is a blissful feeling to discuss and share those warm cherished feelings with a l... Malai Aamras: Fusion of RasMalai and Aamras
2008-02-21 16:30:00 Instant RasMalai using Ricotta Cheese and Vegetable Puffs using the Pastry sheets were some the new shortcut/fusion things I was introduced to when I was newly married here in the United States. Being a novice cook, never in a million years would I have imagined making either of these from scratch the traditional, laborious way. However using ready ingredients like ricotta cheese, puff pastry sheets and following some easy steps, making those treats seemed like a total no-brainer to me. Anyway, 387.415 preparations later ((don’t ask about the decimal placesJ)) suffice to say that I have stopped making them altogether. Please hold on to this thought while I digress, but I promise I will make a connection in the ensuing paragraphs. Days later one fine morning when I was minding my own business, I happened to look at the lone mango pulp can (what else) in the pantry. I was appalled when it stuck to me that we do not use decadent Aamras as a standalone dessert but mainly as accomp... More About: Fusion

Instant Mini Dosas for little ones
More articles from this author:2008-02-18 17:35:00 Food is such a sore subject while dealing with our 2.4 year old. First of all nothing seems to appeal him and then trying new foods is out of question. Two things happen when I take food to him one is the utterance of “Nooooooo” and then making a face and tilting of his head away from the food. I know, I know all you Moms out there are experiencing the same predicament and cannot wait for the kids to grow up. **Sigh** Moving on to some cheery and brighter topic, here are some of our toddler’s anecdotes: He would point in some direction and scream “Amma Daastoov”. We scratched our heads to understand what he was saying, Dear Husband even poured on to Russian Dictionary just to check, but no avail. Until one fine day a light bulb exploded in our heads and we figured that he was saying “Amma Let’s Go”! Anytime he stumbles across his toy trucks while playing he says “Sorry, it’s OK”. When he sneezes it is “Shimme (Excuse me), Bless You, Thank You , We... More About: Mini 1, 2 |
