Berkeley, it's more of a restaurant for the faculty and staff than the students (in terms of price). They have a heated outdoor patio. You can also rent parts of the restaurant for private parties. Akasaka Sushi is located at 2650 Telegraph Avenue (across from Andronico's). The phone number is 510-841-0444.This Japanese restaurant location has in interesting history. Over the last several years, this former I-HOP has been several different restaurants. It makes me wonder if the Feng Shui of this location is bad for a restaurant business. And as I have never eaten at this restaurant in it's current incarnation, the best thing I can say about it is that there is plentiful parking.Check out the Akasaka website for more info. Ajanta Indian restaurant is located at 1888 Solano Avenue in Berkeley. The phone number is 510-526-4373. This is a yummy Indian restaurant! It was voted "Best Indian Restaurant " in the Bay Area by: Zagat, San Francisco Focus Magazine, Bay Area Restaurant Guide, and East Bay Express. It's also great that they are "Green Certified" and use free range, hormone- and antibiotic-free meats and sustainable seafood. Reservations are recommended, especially for weekends. Click on the menus to enlarge.Au Coquelet is located at 2000 University at the corner of Milvia. It's about a seven minute walk from the downtown Berkeley BART station. Parking can be a challenge, but not impossible.It's one of the very few restaurants in Berkeley that is open late. It's open until 1 a.m. on weekdays and 1:30 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. It's a great place to go after a play at the Berkeley Repertory Theater and several downtown movie theaters.There are two parts to the restaurant. The front is more of a coffee shop and the back is a more typical restaurant, although there are no servers to take your order. You have to place your order at the cashier.The food is so-so, but the great thing is that you can sit in the coffee shop part for hours. There's no internet access or outlets for customers, but lots of meeting are held here. Baja Fresh Mexican Grill is located in downtown Berkeley, California at 2237 Shattuck Avenue at the corner of Kittredge. It's down the block from the California Theater, so it's a great place to grab a bite before a show. The phone number is 510-548-4444.Although this is a chain/franchise Mexican restaurant, it's very good. Everything really is fresh; they cook your food on the spot. And it's inexpensive.The online Baja Fresh menu doesn't show the prices since the menu is for the whole country, but you can see the food items they offer. I can usually get a very filling lunch for less than $5 (without a drink). They also have a nice little salsa bar.This is one of my favorites in the Berkeley Restaurant Guide because the food is good, fresh and inexpensive, and the service is quick.

Plus, they have one of the best selections of beer in the East Bay.They are open Monday thru Friday from 11:00 a.m. to midnight. The Blue Nile closed in 2007. It was located at 2525 Telegraph Avenue.I know that almost everyone who likes Ethiopian food loved this place and misses this Berkeley restaurant dearly. I guess it's personal preference, but I never felt that the food was as delicious as the food further down Telegraph (away from the campus) at Ethiopia Restaurant (that's the official name).So if you haven't tried it yet, and you're looking for a "new" Ethiopian restaurant, check out Ethiopia Restaurant.

If you're not familiar with raw food, don't let this scare you off. You probably wouldn't know the food is "raw" if someone hadn't told you. Everything is really delicious (my favorite is the lasagna). Even my meat-eating friends like this place.It's a little pricey for a lunch location, but if you take into consideration all the work that goes into making something raw and so tasty, then you realize it's not so expensive. It's in the "student ghetto" portion of Telegraph, just a few blocks from U.C. Berkeley.The Intermezzo menu shown here (click to enlarge) is deceptively simple. This is THE spot for delicious and humongous salads. The homemade honey-whole wheat bread that accompanies the salads and is used for sandwiches is also delicious. The salads (except for the "Tossed Green") are hard to finish and can often serve two people.At lunch and dinner time, there is always a line out the door to place your order. It looks a bit intimidating, but don't pass it by. It will only take about 10-15 minutes until you get to the front of the line and they make your salad or sandwich on the spot. Dara Lao/Thai Cuisine is right next door to Cha-Am. Their locations almost seem like they're the same place, so be careful of which door you walk into. Also, it may be tempting to head over to Dara because the wait will probably be shorter, but I feel the food at Cha-Am is really much better and worth the wait.The Thai food at Cha-Am is delicious. The one problem I have with this North Berkeley restaurant is that the acoustics aren't good so it gets really noisy. It's very difficult to have a conversation. You need to make reservations several weeks in advance.This is a classy and expensive restaurant. I've heard really different opinions about this restaurant. Some people feel it's exquisite with delicious food and excellent service. Others feels it's overpriced and overrated. From the few vegetarians I've heard from, the vegetarian meals were a real disappointment. I don't know if this has changed. Ethiopia Restaurant is my favorite Ethiopian Restaurant anywhere! It's located at 2955 Telegraph Avenue near Ashby Street in Berkeley, California. The phone number is 510-843-1992.They boast that they have 792 possible vegetarian combinations for their Nene’wee. They also serve meat, of course. I had my first Ethiopian food at this restaurant about twelve years ago, and it's still my favorite Ethiopian food anywhere (even when the Blue Nile was open). The one thing that is disappointing is that occasionally the Injera (traditional Ethiopian bread) seems a little too thick for my palate.If you're looking for an Ethiopian restaurant, I highly recommend this place. Homemade Cafe is located on the corner of Sacramento and Dwight in Berkeley, California. The exact address is 2454 Sacramento Street. The phone number is 510-845-1940.Restaurant hours are Monday - Friday from 7:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.This is a great breakfast place. They serve traditional American breakfasts in huge portions (typical American-sized portions!). I often refer to this place as a "greasy spoon," but only in the most loving way. When close friends come to visit from out of town, they'll often ask me to take them to "that little breakfast place on some corner." This is not a place to impress your friends and colleagues with ambiance, but with the yummy food. (If you wanna impress your friends with a delicious breakfast and a bit more ambiance, head over to La Note on Shattuck.)You may have to share a larger table with strangers and you'll have to get your own coffee and water refills, but it's worth it.
