JUST PHOTOGRAPHY: ARIZONA
2008-04-12 18:32:00
Late March and I had the good fortune to travel to Arizona with the family for Spring Break and a three-day conference. I'll be posting a couple of wine reviews from that trip but wanted to go ahead and share some of the photos I had the opportunity to take. Today's photos are from Sedona, Arizona and the Chapel of the Holy Cross. JUST PHOTOGRAPHY TALK: D80 WINS IT!
2008-03-12 03:12:00
After much research, hand wringing, price comparison, and way too much back and forth, I decided to buy the Nikon D80. I've had it for a week now and am very pleased. It came with the 18-55 VR lens which I've been testing on a variety of portrait shots as well as macro, and I've been impressed with the quality of photos. I've also been trying out an 80-200mm non-VR lens and taking some sports shots and have been equally impressed with those results. I shot a lot of them at f2.8 at a speed of 1600. I was able to stop footballs in mid-rotation and the depth-of-field was exactly what I was trying to accomplish with the blurred background. I've got tons and tons to learn and am open to any suggestions. After I have a storehouse of photographs I'll post a daily for critique and feedback. I also plan to upload photographs to a pbase gallery or other online location but that's in the future. Of course I plan to personally photographs all of my reviewed bottles in the future...

JUST WINE TALK: NOBLE PIG
2008-03-02 21:07:00
Just a short post to share a site that I've been visiting and can highly recommend. Noble Pig is a site written by Cathy who is located in a peculiar little California town. She writes about wine but also about other topics which makes her site interesting. She also likes to photograph yummy recipes that she shares and gives step-by-step instructions along with her how-to photographs. Somewhat new to the blogosphere, she's got an interesting style of writing. Check it out when you get a chance as I think you'll find it very interesting. I've added her site to my Wine Joints I Like as I liked it that much. Sit Long, Talk Much, Laugh Often, Drink Wine and check out Noble Pig!
JUST TALK: WINE LOVERS SHOP
2008-02-28 01:13:00
As someone who loves wine and all the paraphernalia that goes along with it, I've decided to partner with Amazon.com to highlight items that I would like to have and think my readers might be interested in. Easily accessed by clicking on the 365Corks Shop photograph above, or by clicking on the Shop link underneath the photo, I've found highly rated items that I would personally love to have, and in some instances, do. There's Spiegelau and Riedel glassware and exquisite Laguiole Corkscrews. In the Wine Gadgets Section there's the Vinturi Wine Aerator, the Waring Pro Double Bottle Wine Chiller, the PEK Supremo Wine Preserver as well as several other top-notch items. I've highlighted lots of great books and DVD's about wine and wine travel. I've taken the time to identify and highlight great wine coolers by Haier, Vinotemp and Danby. For a special treat visit the Money No Object? section. And last I've added a section for My Camera Loving Friends that highlights all of...

2006 PARDUCCI CHARDONNAY
2008-02-28 00:39:00
A good, affordable wine that goes well with anything, or all by itself. That is my quest and the 2006 Parducci Chardonnay from Mendocino Wine Company perfectly fits the bill. Lots of fruit aromas on the nose with lots of apple and vanilla flavors on the palate and an absolute perfect balance of oak. A hint of dryness with a very smooth finish made this a very enjoyable wine to partake of. In my quest to find out more about this wine, I had never even seen it before my purchase, I found the Mendocino Wine Company website and learned that they were the first carbon neutral winery in the United States. Now I'm not a so-called "tree hugger" by any stretch but do think we can do more to preserve the earth's bounty for future generations. It is nice to know that a company is doing their part and making great wine. I bought this one for $10.99 and gave it 4 Corkscrews as it was an overall enjoyable and tasty wine. 2006 3 TREES PINOT NOIR
2008-02-23 20:44:00
I must admit that I was a little suspicious of today's reviewed wine. The 2006, 3 Trees Pinot Noir , from Australia, was on sale for $11.99. In the past I've been mostly unimpressed with Pinot's at this price point. Well, I'm still unimpressed. This wine had very little flavor that I could pick up and seemed somewhat uninspired. Not much to note on the nose and when I took the first sip Pinot Noir was the last thing that came to mind. After it warmed a little I was able to pick up a little blackberry and spice but nothing that overwhelmed me. Kind of a blah finish as well. I gave this one 2 Corkscrews because it was drinkable, barely, and I didn't pour it down the sink. Avoid this one if you can. Sit Long, Talk Much, Laugh Often, Drink Wine (Something Else for sure)!
2004 MADDALENA CABERNET SAUVIGNON
2008-02-19 01:57:00
There's only been one other time that I've rated two different varietals from the same winery as high as my last two ratings. As you may recall from my last post, if you didn't read it please look below, #1 and I absolutely loved the Sauvignon Blanc from Maddalena Vineyards. Not expecting near as much out of the 2004 Maddalena Cabernet Sauvignon , we opened this and let it breathe for thirty minutes or so. I poured a small tasting amount into my glass and swirled for a few seconds. Not the dark, ruby red you see in some Cabernets but more of a medium red color. As I took a nice, full amount of aroma into my nostrils, I was greeted with vanilla, plum and spices. On the palate I picked up raspberry, spiced cherries, a little bit of caramel and maybe just a little oak. Tannins were almost non-existent and this wine had a silky finish that made me want more. Lots more! Having enjoyed this bottle as much as their Sauvignon, I had to find out more. These grapes are sourced from the Cass...
2006 MADDALENA SAUVIGNON BLANC from SAN ANTONIO WINERY
2008-02-07 04:21:00
"That wine you got is great!", were the exact words #1 greeted me with tonight as I walked into the house from a hard days work. Or at least a days work! With that kind of endorsement behind it I couldn't wait to try it myself. From the San Antonio Winery located where? You guessed it, Los Angeles, California. Don't let the name of the winery, or its location in Los Angeles, California, dissuade you from trying their wines. If the rest of their offerings are as good as this one, I can't wait to get my hands on more. This 2006 Sauvignon Blanc , from their Maddalena Vineyards, is made of grapes sourced from the Steinbeck Vineyard in Paso Robles. On the nose we got loads of clean, fresh citrus and a touch of "grassiness" as the vineyard puts it. I think that's a good way to sum up the clean, refreshing nose on this wine. On the palate more of the "non-sour" citrus as I like to refer to it. No grapefruit here, just lots of melon, green apple, maybe some kiwi? A nice, semi-dry ...
JUST TALK: ONCE
2008-02-02 21:05:00
Just a quick recommendation of a movie #1 and I watched last night. Once, a sweet little love story that takes place in Ireland, this is a boy meets girl, boy kinda falls in love, type movie with lots of really good music. Filmed on a low budget, this film has the feel of a documentary as a majority of it was filmed with handheld cameras. Not a huge time committment, I think it was about an hour and twenty minutes, it made for an enjoyable viewing experience. Be sure to check out the "Special Features" section if you rent this on DVD as it is interesting how the whole film came together. I give it 4Corkscrews, which is similar to a thumbs up! 2006 ANNE AMIE PINOT GRIS
2008-01-31 02:39:00
I've got a new favorite girl and her name is Anne Amie! My true #1 picked this up recently, paying a little more than I normally do, $17.99, but we're finding it harder and harder to find decent wine, at least Pinot Gris , less than $15.00 a bottle. This wine, lovingly made evidently, in Carlton, Oregon, has a smokey gold appearance in the glass that I don't think I've seen before. A huge bouquet of fruit was evidenced on the nose which was followed up by just a wonderful, great experience of flavor dancing in the mouth and on the palate. Velvety smooth finish made every drop of this wine enjoyable. And I mean EVERY DROP! I easily gave this one 5 Corkscrews and am pleading with anyone who reads this to find a bottle and try. I promise you will not be disappointed and it will be money well spent. Sit Long, Talk Much, Laugh Often, Find Anne Amie Pinot Gris somewhere!
JUST TALK: THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM & EASTERN PROMISES
2008-01-29 02:05:00
Just a short post regarding a couple of movies #1 and I've recently seen. We're big Netflix fans so we have a constant flow of movies arriving in our mailbox. Our most recent DVD was of The Bourne Ultimatum . This is the third in the Bourne series and ranks in that place behind the other two, The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy. If I was giving corkscrew ratings I'd have to give the first one 5 Corkscrews, the second 4 and this last one 3. My major complaint, I guess, about the Ultimatum was that it felt like one long chase scene from the start of the movie to the end. They filmed in a lot of beautiful locations but it is hard to see much at the speed this movie moves in. I'm sure the fourth edition can't be far behind but I'm beginning to wonder how many rogue CIA-types there can be. Surely they've exhausted that story line.A movie we received prior to that was Eastern Promises starring the great Viggo Mortensen with an excellent supporting role by french actor Vince...

2006 HUNT COUNTRY VINEYARDS SEMI-DRY RIESLING
2008-01-25 23:13:00
This review is one I've had on my desk for quite some time but just hadn't gotten around to posting it to the site. A 2006 Hunt Country Vineyards Semi -Dry Riesling from the Finger Lakes Region of New York. This one had an excellent nose with a vision of "freshness" coming to mind when I first took it fully into my nose. After tasting I noted that it also tasted fresh and light on the palate with just the right amount of sweetness. True to its name, it exhibited a little bit of dryness but not the kind of dryness that makes you feel like you're drinking air. Nice, smooth finish made this an overall enjoyable one. I easily awarded it 4 Corkscrews. It retails on the Hunt Country Vineyards website for $13.99 but looks like it is going fast as they only have 5 cases left. Get it while you can! Sit Long, Talk Much, Laugh Often, Drink this Riesling!
JUST TALK: NIKON D80 VS. CANON EOS 40D
2008-01-25 01:20:00
Now some of you may be wondering why a wine blog has two cameras shown in its latest post. Today instead of giving advise on wine, travel, etc., I'm asking for advise. You'll see how this will actually have an affect on this site. A little history. About three months ago, or so, I decided to get serious about photography. Having some experience with Nikon at work, I automatically assumed that I would end up buying a Nikon for personal use. That was until I started researching which model to buy. After lots of reading and scouring the internet, as well as talking to a boatload of individuals with cameras, I've narrowed it to a Canon EOS 40D, Digital, or a Nikon D80. Now it would make this process so much easier if both of the manufacturers would send me one of each for testing and an unbiased review. And if that happens I will give each a fair shake. For some reason I'm not real confident that those cameras will be arriving on my doorstep anytime soon so I'm asking all of you re...

JUST TALK: WINE & PHILOSOPHY
2008-01-24 01:18:00
I recently had the opportunity to review a copy of Dr. Fritz Allhoff's book "Wine & Philosophy ". A compilation of a series of essays, it is a very good read that has lots of interesting ways of looking at wine. A historical look that spans various time periods and civilizations, this book lets the reader see how wine has been viewed over the many years it has been enjoyed by mankind. With chapters including "The Art & Culture of Wine", "Tasting & Talk ing about Wine" and "The Politics & Economics of Wine" to name a few, you can see that this isn't just any old book on wine. My favorite essay is entitled "Talk about Wine?" by Kent Bach. He points out that being able to talk about wine requires experience at drinking wine as well as learning a special vocabulary. This sums up my experience with wine and probably everyone who learns to appreciate the different varietals of wine available. That is also my excuse, I guess, for my continued quest to find different, afford...
JUST TRAVEL TALK: FLORIDA
2008-01-21 20:00:00
I had the opportunity to attend some training in the Melbourne, Florida area the second week of January, and since I have relatives that live in that area, I accepted. I stayed at the Doubletree Guest Suites in Indialantic, Florida, also listed as Melbourne Beach, Florida on occasion, as it is a member of the Hilton brands and since I have a Hilton Honors membership card I tend to search their properties out. This hotel was totally redone after the hurricanes of a few years ago and it shows! Everything was fresh and new and every room, yes EVERY room, is oceanfront. The Atlantic Ocean isn't as pretty as the Gulf of Mexico, but it is nice to listen to the waves crashing in. Each room at this hotel is separate from the living area and comes fully equipped. They also have these out-of-this world cookies every night at the front desk. All you have to do is stop by and ask and they'll give you as many as you can hold. Bring workout clothes! I highly recommend it! While in Melbourne ...

JUST WINE TALK
2008-01-21 00:22:00
Not a lot of time for posting of late as the new year has been somewhat hectic. I've added a YouTube player on my site after having an opportunity to review the type of videos that they are carrying these days. Just a neat little addition where we can all pick up some new information that we might not know about otherwise. I wanted to mention that I came across an ad in an HDTV magazine that showed up, unexpected, in my mail box the other day. It was an ad for eSommelier Wine Cellar Management. Now as some one who doesn't presently maintain a wine cellar I probably wouldn't have a huge need for this system but I know that a lot of my readers would. I haven't personally used it but it does look like an interesting system. You can check it out at eSommelier.net and see if it is something any of you could use. If you've tried this let me know your thoughts. Stay tuned as I've got a back log of items to write about including a recent trip to the east coast of central Flor...

LA POSADA RESORT, SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO
2007-12-18 00:38:00
I recently had the good fortune to travel to Santa Fe, New Mexico , my first time, for a weeks worth of meetings and conferences. Fortunately #1 and I were able to go out a few days early after the kid's grandparents agreed to babysit for us. We planned our trip about two months ahead of time and booked a room at the La Posada Resort and Spa. For some reason, still unknown to me, I decided to get on TripAdviser.com and look at some recent reviews. Needless to say I was shocked by the reviews that had been posted and came very, very close to cancelling our reservations. Thank goodness I didn't! La Posada was probably one of the nicest resorts we've stayed at and I've made my last visit to the TripAdviser site as evidently they are letting a bunch of idiots post reviews there. We stayed in Room 135 at the resort which was located on the periphery of the property. Request this room if you go as it is huge with a separate living room and huge bedroom and bathroom. Great bedding made ...

2006 STANDING STONE VINEYARDS RIESLING
2007-11-08 01:22:00
Wednesday, November 7, 2007A very special day today and unfortunately I'm out of town for it. #1 will know what I'm talking about. Today's reviewed wine, the 2006 Standing Stone Vineyards Riesling , is from a region that, quite honestly, I knew nothing about when I had the opportunity to try this wine. Man have I been missing out. Not only on wines from this region, the Finger Lakes Region of New York, but this grape as well. #1 and I popped the cork on this one recently and poured a couple of glasses for tasting and enjoyment. Not expecting much I was shocked how good this was! An off-dry Riesling, this one had a very "clean, mineral" nose, which both of us normally like. On the tongue we noted peaches and pears and more of the clean, mineral taste that was picked up on the nose. A nice finish based on excellent acidity and balance. Don't let the off-dry comment scare you off as this is far from a typical "dry" wine and is loaded with flavor. This one retails for abou...
THE BIG RED MONSTER
2007-11-05 02:56:00
Sunday, November 4, 2007Hi there fellow wine lovers. Not a lot of time these days to write about wine so I'm saving posts for unique wines that I'm able to find and I'll be posting about travel and wine a little more as well. Also, be on the look out for my series of reviews of Riesling from the Finger Lakes Region of New York. I've been trying several bottles from that region and will be posting reviews of those in the coming days. I haven't covered Riesling in the past as I was never that crazy about it but I've come to appreciate it and, in fact, really liked the ones from the Finger Lakes. But you'll see those reviews soon enough.Today's reviewed wine is The Big Red Mons ter bottled by Bennett Family Vineyards in Rutherford, California. A full-bodied, red blend with a great label was what greeted me when I had a chance to try this one. My fondness for old movie posters had me very interested in opening this and soon after I received it I was pouring my first glass....
JUST TALK: WINE-WALL.COM
2007-10-16 03:26:00
Monday, 10/15/07, Little Rock, AR As I mentioned in one of my postings last week, I've discovered a wine accessories site that I think everyone should know about. And just in time for the holidays! Wine -Wall .com was founded by a group of entrepreneurs who are enthusiastic about wine and the accoutrement's that are needed to fully enjoy the wine experience. I had a chance to test out their Wine Tube and, needless to say, was very impressed! Made from strong, very stylish, stainless steel, the Wine Tube holds twelve bottles of your wine collection which can be displayed in a way that allows you to easily view the labels. Not to go overboard with hyperbole, but the Wine Tube is truly a work of art. Very easy to install as well and will fit in with any decor. I understand that they've got some great deals on a variety of items that will make great gifts for your favorite oenophile. I liked this site so much that I've added them to my Must Have Accessories list. Drop by their site wh...

2006 HOB NOB CHARDONNAY
2007-10-12 05:10:00
Thursday, 10/11, Little Rock, AR Finally a new wine in the market to try and to review. We stopped at a little store near our house on the way home from my little girl's victorious soccer game and picked this one up. The 2006 Hob Nob Chardonnay appears like most California chardonnay bottles and that's exactly what the French want us to think. This California-sounding and looking wine is actually a product of France. No problem as far as I'm concerned because if it had been packaged as a fancy french white I probably would have had to pay more. After chilling this for awhile I poured a glass and noted a light-to-medium golden color in the glass. A few swirls later and my nose was treated to lemon, citrus, hazelnut and an overwhelming smell of "freshness" for lack of a better term. On the tongue I noted apple, just the right amount of oak and just a hint of honey. A smooth, velvety finish made for a nice glass of white. I gave this one 4 Corkscrews based on its great taste and jus...
2005 PURPLE MOUNTAIN CHARDONNAY AND VIEUX CARRE
2007-10-09 00:25:00
Monday, 10/8, Columbus Day, Little Rock, AR Columbus Day, no work and the kids are in school. How often does that happen? Never! After spending an hour this morning doing a little geocaching, I came home and #1 and I got ready for a little lunch and shopping. Having a birthday a few days back, she's been trying to coral me and make me go by some clothes. I've always said she looks at me as her grown-up Ken doll. Things are starting to slow a little around here with Fall baseball done and soccer and football only three weeks or so from finishing up as well. Haven't had any "new" wine as of late hence the lack of posts. Today I had a chance to try a new chardonnay and try out a restaurant that we had been wanting to give a shot. #1 and I headed to the Hillcrest area of Little Rock today and gave Vieux Carre a try. This restaurant is modeled after some found in New Orleans and opened in 2006. I didn't notice a lot of the items I've seen in restaurants in my past trips to New Orlea...

JUST TALK: 365CORKS & SYNC WEEKLY
2007-09-27 04:34:00
Wednesday, 9/26, Little Rock, AR About a week ago I had a chance to sit down with the Editor of Sync Weekly , a cutting edge, weekly publication that is somewhat new to the area. She was planning an issue devoted to wine and had found the 365Corks site. She wanted to know what people just starting to discover wine should know and I tried to give some suggestions that I thought would be helpful. The publication just hit the stands today and can also be found online at their site. Entitled Wine Notes: Some basic knowledge will go a long way in learning to appreciate wine it lists several areas that their editor thought would be interesting to her readership. A very informative article that I was happy to be able to contribute to. Check it out if you get a chance as there are several other articles relating to wine that were very informative. 2005 & 2006 SMOKING LOON PINOT NOIR
2007-09-27 04:17:00
Saturday, 9/22, Little Rock, AR There is no joy in Hawgville as the mighty Razorbacks have lost to the Wildcats from the Bluegrass state. No heartburn on my part as I didn't go to the U of A, or just Fayetteville, as it is known. We had our neighbors over for the game and ended up trying two different bottles of the Smoking Loon Pinot Noir . We tried the 2006 bottle first, followed by the 2005. Dark, ruby red in color, they both exhibited a strong nose with lots of strawberry/cherry aromas. On the tongue we noted the strawberry, cherry, light spice and a touch of oak. Smooth, excellent finish made both of these winners. No real difference was noted between the 2006 and 2005 as both were equally good. Based on the absurdly, at least for a Pinot Noir, low price of $9.99 each, it was extremely easy to award both of these 4 Corkscrews. Smoking Loon is part of the Don Sebastiani chain and I've been surprised how consistent their Pinots have been and am sure we'll be picking up more bo...
2005 SMOKING LOON CHARDONNAY
2007-09-20 04:57:00
Wednesday, 9/17, Little Rock, AR Okay. I know many of you may be wondering what happened to Rob W. over at 365corks.com. No. I didn't quit drinking wine. I have, however, been extremely busy and haven't had a chance to try any new and unique wine that I felt like writing about. I've also had a little bit of travel thrown in for good measure, Dallas, Texas, and didn't even have any notable wine there. In fact, I ended up drinking Blue Moon beer two of the nights I was in town. Now that is good stuff if you like beer at all! Today's reviewed wine, the 2005 Smoking Loon Chardonnay , is, unfortunately, the wine I chose to review in my "comeback" review. Nothing at all to recommend about this wine. Very weak nose, no flavors of any note and an uninspired finish. Wish I could be more positive about this one, especially after a several week lay off from posting reviews, but as they say, "It is what it is". 2 Corkscrew rating for this one, and barely at that. I'll get out there and tra...

2005 CONCANNON PINOT GRIS
2007-09-05 04:53:00
Monday, September 3, Little Rock, AR Ahh Labor Day! A day spent meeting with the DirectTV guy to upgrade my receiver, for about the fourth time in two years, and then a trip to a nearby water park where evidently they were having an "Everyone overweight by 100 pounds or more gets in free" day, no we had to pay, to the discovery of today's reviewed wine. On our way home with the kids from the fat farm, they didn't qualify for free admission either, we stopped by this little hole-in-the-wall wine/liquor store that we seldom frequent. I went in looking for a bottle or two of some type of white wine and ended up grabbing a 2005 Concannon Central Coast Limited Release Pinot Gris that was selling for about $10.99/bottle. I also picked up a Pinot Grigio at the same time which caused an intellectual discussion between #1 and myself to break out. What is the difference between Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio? I'm sure many of you have asked the same question and hopefully I can give you...
