Top Five Foodie Movies
2007-02-13 01:31:04 I got to thinking the other night about movies involving food, and decided to compile a list of my top five favorite foodie movies. 1. Babycakes - an obscure made-for-TV movie starring Ricki Lake as a single, overweight woman trying to win the man of her dreams, namely through food ("food is a way to a man's heart" or something like that?). Cute movie but depressing at times. 2. Like Water for Chocolate - based on a book (which I read in high school and loved), is about a young girl, Tita, who cannot marry because it is tradition for the oldest girl in the family to take care of her mother. Tita creates dishes that have a bit of magic to them and sometimes cause an uproar. I loved this book and the movie equally. I think this may be the only movie adaptation from a book that I really truly loved. 3. What's Cooking? - this movie is about a group of different people (different cultures) getting together at Thanksgiving. I loved this one, there is an air of drama but you also get to ... Restaurant Review- Black Forest, Everson, WA
2007-02-13 01:31:04 I received a couple of emails from locals here asking for some advice on where to eat, and I have to be honest, I haven't really ventured out that far yet, so my husband and I are going to go around Whatcom County and possibly even further south as far as Everett, Washington to review certain restaurants. The funniest and most ironic thing about this is when I was working as a telemarketer, I used to call up people surveying them on where they liked to eat. Now, I can't really recall what people said unless I hear of the place. So we decided to drive northeast to Everson, which is a bit of a drive (over a half hour drive) because I have been dying to go to Black Forest, which is a German restaurant that serves Schnitzel (which everyone I have ever talked to who has been there raves about). Schnitzel is a breaded pork cutlet type of meat. Anyhow, we drove to Everson and found Black Forest easily (it's on the main street in Everson, which is a small town). I will say it is definite... Top Five Guilty Food Favorites
2007-02-09 07:27:01 Garrett from Vanilla Garlic wrote about our guilty pleasures food-wise and compiled a list of his top five favorites, so I thought I'd do the same thing myself! 1. Cake. Any type of cake with lots of sweet frosting. I'm such a cakehound. 2. Nachos, covered in cheese, green onions, meat, sour cream, beans, tomatoes, you name it. I prefer my nachos to be a little soft with their crunch! 3. Steak. I love steak. I don't eat it often but when I do, I love it. My favorite cut of beef is Prime Rib, served with Au Jus sauce. I love Filet Mignon and Porterhouses as well. 4. Corn. It's such a bad bad bad starchy food but I can never get enough of it. I stopped slathering it in butter and it's still just as good. I do prefer it on the cob though, and Sweet White Corn on the cob would be my favorite. 5. Sonic and Wendy's food. I never had Sonic til the summer of 2005 and I LOVED their tater tots ("Give me some of your tots!"). I love Wendy's french fries and Frosties (and yes, I'm one o... Dog owners! Dog Treat Recipes
2007-02-09 07:27:01 I got this from a friend recently, and wanted to share with you all! You too, can stop buying the expensive dog treats and make them yourself! (Can't remember what they're called) 3/4 Wheat Germ3/4 Powdered Milk1 jar beef or liver flavored baby food1 egg1/2 jar of water (from the baby food) Combine all ingredients and mix well. Put on greased cookie sheet in quarter - size increments. Bake at 350 degrees for about 15 to 20 minutes. Flatten the biscuits on to a greased cookie sheet. Crumble bacon and cheese on the top of the flattened biscuit and then roll/fold the biscuit w/ cheese and bacon inside. Bake at 350 until the tops are golden brown. (Before baking you can brush the outer parts of biscuit w/ the grease if you want.) Hey, even us humans could eat them. May not like them but we could eat them for sure. More About: Recipes , Treat , Owner , Owners
Spam Sushi
2007-02-08 19:26:02 This may gross out most of you, but there is such a thing as Spam Sushi . Hard to believe, huh? I guess they will come up with anything. I have to say, and I know some other Filipino people can vouch for this one, I love fried spam with sticky rice, so I am wondering if this Spam Sushi is something I could try out. My mom went to the Spam Festival in Monterey a couple of years ago and wasn't really keen on the Spam Sushi so she did not try it. I thought I'd look up a recipe, and sure enough, I found one on Epicurious. Pasta Bruschetta Review
2007-02-07 19:25:02 Okay, so I didn't have Basil or Parmesan. I substituted Oregano. WRONG idea. We really didn't care for this but it's because 1, I didn't have the correct ingredients, 2, I accidentally added TOO much Oregano, and 3, I should have cooked the onion/tomatoes before adding them because I can't stand the taste of raw onions. Hopefully better luck next time! But a major thank you to Mommy Chef for the More About: Review , Pasta , View , Past
I'm sorry
2007-02-04 19:24:01 This has truly been the week from hizzell. I am planning on making Mommy Chef's Pasta Bruschetta tonight, except I totally forgot the Basil Leaves and the Parmesan, so I will have to substitute mozarrella. As for the Basil, no can do. Oyy. Pictures will follow, I promise. Pork chops will be our meat tonight as well! Sorry for being a slacker on blogging this week.
TGIGSD!!!
2007-02-01 07:21:01 (Thank Goodness it's Grocery Shopping Day!) Seriously. I cleaned out what we had in the fridge veggie wise (which was honestly pathetic, a clove of garlic, half a white onion, and a couple of green onions. That's IT), cleaned out the fruit as well, and used what I could find in our pantry. I came up with a pretty filling and yummy Nacho dish thingy (I have NO clue what else to call it). This is what I used: the white onion, the green onions, the garlic, ground beef, a can of green chiles, 1/3 block of Velveeta (yeah yeah don't hate!), tortillas. 1. I usually make my own tortilla chips by taking 2 tortillas at a time (I usually only use 4 tortillas total for my family and that is more than plenty), and using a pizza cutter, cut them in half, then cut the halfs into quarters, and once again cut those quarters into chip sized tortilla strips. I line a cookie sheet with my tortilla strips and drizzle EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil for those of you who don't watch Rachael Ray) lightly ...
Neighhhhh
2007-01-30 19:19:01 Above: Mini-Pie is the one on the top row second to the left with the huge grin on her face. It really was an adorable play, and I am so proud of my little girl for sticking with it and putting up with the long rehearsals after school to learn her part. They only had a few days to learn this play and they all did an exceptional job. Way to go!!!!
Rigatoni Chicken dish
2007-01-29 07:18:02 I decided to fly by the seat of my pants when preparing last night's dinner...so I will describe what I did. First off, I took two large boneless, skinless chicken breasts and cut them up into 1/2 inch biteable sizes and sprinkled them liberally with oregano and pepper as well as some garlic salt. I sauteed some white onion and garlic (both minced) in some olive oil and then threw the chicken in and cooked until browned. I boiled the Riga toni and when that was done, I added a half ziplock bag of shredded cheddar cheese and a can of crushed tomatoes to the mix. I diced up some green onion and also added that to the mix as well. When that was all incorporated I added my skillet sauteed chicken/onion/garlic mix and mixed well. It was a hit. How's that for creative? I was working with limited supplies (going shopping next week), so I basically used anything and everything I had in my cabinet and crisper. Sorry, I forgot to take pictures! Taxes, homework and tummy troubles, oh my!
2007-01-29 07:18:02 So, this past weekend was spent with some sort of tummy ailment and sinus pain, popping Kirkland brand Allergy Sinus pills like they were jujubes. Friday night my oldest nephew spent the night (a trade-off deal I had with my BIL/SIL because they kept my daughter overnight during DH's Christmas party in December), Saturday was a blur, mainly sleeping because the pills made me woozy, getting my homework done, and then Sunday I spent doing my brother-in-law's taxes for him (I am the resident family CPA so long as I can file a 1040EZ/A because I have yet to file the more extensive tax forms) as well as hanging out with my sister-in-law and watching my bratty 2-year-old nephew destroy my apartment (grrr). Ahh well, at least he finally gave me a hug and a kiss (which he never does, only because he has the world's chubbiest cheeks and you can't help but plant kisses on them). Overall it was a pretty good weekend, despite feeling icky. I have been tagged by Lemony Lemons to do a music ... More About: Taxes , Tax , Homework , Home , Work
Pork Adobo take one, success
2007-01-29 07:18:02 Following my Nana's instructions (which you can implement into any form of adobo, be it beef, chicken or pork), I decided to use the pork we had in the freezer. I remembered that this time around, it was not necessary to use half a bottle of vinegar (ackkk!). The result? Pure goodness. Just like Nana made it. But what was missing? Whole Black Peppercorns like Nana puts in hers! My family enjoyed it. Well, my husband, who is a rice-a-phobe enjoyed it this time around. Not fond of the rice, but liked the meat nonetheless. And I am sorry, but I just cannot serve adobo without rice. It's just wrong! Next on my menu is learning how to make Nana's pancit! More About: Success , Take , Pork
It's a Beautiful Sunday!
2007-01-29 07:18:02 Yesterday was Mini-Pie's school play, where she was a seahorse. I will post pictures later, but it was so darned cute. Only problem is, I woke up in the morning with a sore throat and you know what that usually leads to? Cold, flu, icky sickness. So I was convinced I could get it out of my system, by taking some Vitamin C, drinking lots of water, hot tea to soothe my throat, and using lozenges to help the throat. When we got home from her play, I was too tired to move, so my husband made dinner and my daughter helped him with clean up, and I took my butt to bed early. Woke up this morning at 7am (which I never do. 8am at the earliest normally), and was craving some carb-a-licious pancakes so I made pancakes and eggs, got my laundry started, finished up homework, and here I am now. Can't believe I felt that well to do that. I still have a bit of a sore throat but not as bad as it was yesterday! Here's to beating the ickies. You too can do it. I swear by vitamins. Speaking of swear... More About: Sunday , Beautiful , Beau
It's all about Cumin
More articles from this author:2007-01-29 07:18:02 I just love the taste of Cumin , the smell of it, and really, I just discovered it. (I told you I'm no seasoned pro! I'm still learning!) My husband is such a fan of the smoky flavor that he pretty much uses it in anything he decides to cook (I usually make him cook for us on the weekends because I tend to get burnout from the week!). Last weekend it was Cumin-flavored pork chops. Yum. This week he's considering grilling some Cumin-flavored Chicken breasts and making some sort of Mexican feast for us.Mexican and Italian foods are very common in this household, just because of the ease of what I am used to cooking as well as the tasty herbs and spices, but I'm considering buying the Chia Herb Gardens so I don't have to constantly run back and forth from the store for Basil, Rosemary, Chives and such.Steering away from the Cumin topic...This recipe here I found on All Recipes looks good and is in the "Diabetic recipes" top 20 recipe section:Pasta with Fresh Tomato Sauce ...
