Review - Efruiti Sour Fruit Juice Berries
2008-03-26 02:01:00
I've been eating the Efruiti berries for years. You'd probably recognize them from the bulk bins first at health food stores and now, more frequently at supermarkets. I believe you can even buy them pre-packaged now. I tried to look this candy up, but I can't find any sites except for a few distributors who sell Efruiti stuff. If you've never heard of them, well, maybe it's a local thing!

News Article: The Sour Trend
2008-03-20 02:12:00
"Kids want Razzles and Chiclets and Airheads and bubble gum. They want the old stuff, too, says Beth Miller, owner of Suckers Candy (3256 N. Damen Ave.; 773-549-1706). Ring Pops and Pop Rocks. Gummies. All the old Wonka stuff like Laffy Taffy, Nerds and that sugary juice mix with the candy stick, a.k.a. Fun Dip. The stuff they learned about from their parents. "I sell a ton of Pop Rocks," Miller

First Taste - Toxic Waste
2008-03-14 02:44:00
Finally, after a month's worth of reviews I've found a candy that not only justifies the sour label, it hits the high end of the scale. Toxic Waste is sour, extreme and hazardous. A few hours after eating these, the roof of my mouth was still quite sore. I do recommend these as a sour fan, but what I wouldn't recommend is eating more than one in a row. Powerful stuff! Way to go, Toxic

Review - Croc Tears
2008-03-10 04:43:00
If nothing else, I have to give this candy kudos for the name. Sour candy that makes you cry big crocodile tears? Get it?! Ha ha ha. These are yet another candy dubbed 'extra sour.' After my experiences lately, I remain dubious. First up is lemon! It's tart and quite tasty. The texture is quite SweeTart-like, except a bit denser. The lemon taste isn't readily apparent, but what

Review - Sour Patch Kids
2008-03-09 06:01:00
When I'm reviewing my sours, not only am I looking for the pucker factor, I'm looking for the flavour factor too. Sour Patch Kids might not make your eyes water, but they sure taste good. They come in four varieties and each looks like a foot. It's supposed to be a 'kid' but it's decidedly indistinct. Check out the wikipedia article on them for the interesting story of the candy's evolution

Everything in Moderation (even sours!)
2008-03-05 23:11:00
Some of you may have noticed that I have another blog, Budget Organic. It's a project I intend to pick up on in the future, but for the moment candy gets what free time I have between classes and work. You may be wondering then, how someone who believes in living a green, organic and sustainable life can balance that with a love of that oh-so-consumer item, candy. The answer is just that -
Review - Double Sour Skittles
2008-03-03 05:02:00
Considering regular Sour Skittles are a benchmark on my sour rating system I was quite excited when I saw these Double Sour Skittles. I checked into it and no, these aren't just regular sours with an extra coating. Supposedly they have two layers. They come in five flavours: Watermelon: Smells like strawberry bubbalicious. Tastes like watermelon! A very nice watermelon flavour like you'd

First Taste - Fascini Sour Sputnix
2008-03-02 01:53:00
A candy named after a Russian satellite? Yep! And a surprisingly good candy to boot. The flavour is a lot like Campino with a dusting of sour sugar. It's not all that sour after the first one, but it's sour enough to deserve that label. The fact that they're actually tasty is what surprised me the most. I'd love to try these un-smushed and fresher. It's definitely encouraged me to try more

Review - Mentos Sours
2008-03-01 04:26:00
Time to ask the age-old question....is a mint actually a mint if there's no mint in it? Mentos , which are famous for their chewy peppermints (and that commercial from the 90s that was subsequently spoofed by The Foo Fighters) have entered the world of sour. I am dubious. Mentos, the Sourmaker just doesn't have the same ring to it. These 'mints' come in three flavours: lemon, watermelon and

Review - Wonka SOUR! Nerds
2008-02-27 05:16:00
I had high hopes for these. Willy Wonka has shown that they know how to do sour well. Though the SOUR! proclamation does make me hesitate a bit. Rarely do sours live up to the all-caps, exclamation point kind of hype. I do admit I have a soft spot for Nerds and the idea of tasty sours in tiny little balls of...whatever they are, is appealing. Now I have to admit a bias. I think citrus

Let's Do Organic Super Sour Gummi Bears
2008-02-24 21:51:00
(Image from Amazon.com where you can purchase these in bulk.) These gummis are from Let's Do Organic s. Not only are they flavoured with real fruit and vegetable concentrates, they're vegan-friendly and kosher. They also have no artificial colourings and are gluten-free. Despite everything these don't have, they're actually quite good. As to be expected, the texture isn't quite the same as

Ever wanted to run your own sour candy factory?
2008-02-23 19:52:00
From Discovery Channel, the people who brought you such sweet shows as How It's Made (which often talks about candy) brings you a kit to make your own sour candy! For a sour lover, this seems like a dream come true. I mean, what's cooler than making your own sour candy? Sure it says it's for kids, but so what? This is the description from their website: --- Prepare to pucker up as you make

Sour loving: it's in our genes!
2008-02-22 19:00:00
Well! It seems all we sour lovers have something in common: our genes! An article published this summer by ScienceDaily says we may be genetically predisposed to appreciating sour things. The article gets very sciency (and I admit I'm not sciency) but it's interesting nonetheless. ScienceDaily (2007-07-13) -- Scientists report that genes play a large role in determining individual differences

Hubba Bubba Max Sour Double Berry
2008-02-21 19:12:00
I've started to notice that sour candies have ridiculous long names and Hubba Bubba Max Sour Double Berry is no exception. This is your classic bubblegum, with its rectangular shape and soft texture. From the looks of the package, it's meant to be a mixture of raspberry and the mythical blue raspberry. It looks and smells like cotton candy. It's a pleasant (if sweet) scent. Upon first chew,
Weird Candy - Cadbury's Popping Mini Eggs
2008-02-20 03:15:00
Okay, so these aren't sours, but they're so strange I just couldn't resist. So from time to time, I'll review non-sour candies that are unusual or just plain fun. If you've never had a mini egg before, they're one of the great wonders of the Valentines/Easter candy season. The outside is a sweet, milky candy shell. The inside is smooth milk chocolate that's not too sweet or bitter. With this

First Taste - Dubble Bubble Cry Baby Extra Sour gumballs.
2008-02-18 21:37:00
My clearest memory of this gum as a kid were dares with my friends. We used to see how long we could keep one of these in our mouths (sometimes two!). So surely with a memory as vivid as that, these have to be sour, right? I don't think my memory is that faulty, and I don't think that my tolerance for sour has gone up that much, but these gumballs were a big disappointment. After chewing

The Rating System Explained
2008-02-14 05:41:00
With two reviews under my belt, it's probably time for me to explain just how I'm rating these candies. I'm using a scale of 0 to 10. A 0 would be gummi bears, strawberry mallows or anything else with no sour to it whatsoever. A 1, 2, 3 or 4 candy would be something that is naturally tart, such as a green apple or lemon. Candies in the 5, 6 or 7 range can rightfully be called 'sour.' A candy

Jelly Belly Sours
2008-02-13 06:02:00
I first encountered Jelly Belly jellybeans back in the day when I was a candy shop clerk. It was a small, old fashioned shop crammed floor to ceiling with every candy imaginable. We had a large Jelly Belly display and whenever I could, I'd sample a few. My favorite unusual flavour has got to be popcorn. Still, I'm a sucker for the sours! Although I've had Jelly Belly Sours before, I have never
First Taste - Jones Soda Co. Carbonated Sours Spiked Punch
2008-02-12 05:06:00
Whoo! What a mouthful of a title! Welcome to my inaugural 'first taste' review. This is a video review because I've never actually had this candy before. There's no sense in videotaping my reactions to a candy I've had before, so this honour will be reserved for first timers. I spotted the Jones carbonated sours last week in the campus coffee shop/convenience store. This multipurpose store
