Spicy Bhindi Fry {Stir-fried Okra}
2008-01-27 14:42:00
As much as I love to taste food from different cuisines there are times when I crave the simplicity of roz-ka-khana or simple day to day home cooked food. All through this week I cooked a variety of foods like couscous with veggies and chicken, pasta and garlic bread, pita bread pizza etc etc etc . These are all my favourites and very filling .But the satisfaction that my family and I get when we eat a typical simple Maharshtrian meal is something that cannot really be explained. Today was one such day when I needed my dose of a complete Maharshtrian lunch which included1. Poli, (Chapati)2. Bhendichi bhaji,(the one you see above)3. Aamti,(a spiced up Dal)4. Koshimbir,(Maharshtrian salad)5. Limbacha loncha,(Sweet and sour lemon pickle)6. Taak,(buttermilk)7. Varan Bhaat (Rice and Dal)8. Rawyacha Ladoo (A sweet treat ,recipe here)I wish I had photographed the entire plate served but I guess photography was the last thing on my mind then. So what I have for you today is the bhindi fry w...

Celebrating Makar Sakranti (Tilgul Ghya Goad Bola)
2008-01-14 21:40:00
Finally my blog has come out of hibernation and here I am with a brand new festive post. What better way to start blogging again than about something festive , something sweet . It is Makar Sakranti tomorrow and I spent most of my day making Tilgul. So much so that at the end of the day I was so tired that I had no strength left to cook and we ended up ordering Pizza for dinner. Of course that was after the Husband and the Son had gobbled a few pieces of Tilgul each.So coming back to the festival: Makar Sakranti is that day of the year when the sun begins its Northward Journey (the Uttarayan) and enters the Zodiac sign Makar or Capricorn. Sakranti is celebrated in different parts of India in different ways. Though not a very very big festival like Diwali, it is celebrated on a fairly large scale in Maharashtra. Sweets are prepared using Til (Sesame Seeds) and Gul or Gur (Jaggery or palm sugar). Like with most Indian Festivals the food prepared is closely associated with the climate ...

Chicken Frankie (Dadar Shivaji Park style)
2007-12-12 14:14:00
All those who have eaten a Chicken Frankie at the Tibbs outlet at Shivaji Park Dadar in Mumbai will agree with me when I say that the frankie you get there is surpassed by none. It's spicy ,hot ,tangy and the outer roll is filled with the most delicious and tender spicy chicken. If you have just spent a whole morning shopping in Dadar, and are looking for some great tasting food to replenish your energy conserves so that you can shop some more later then this is the place to head for. After reading this you might be under the impression that I am a regular there, but the fact is that I have frequented that place only twice in my life, but the taste was so awesome that every time I think of Frankies that's the only place I remember. So some days back when I made these at home I tried my level best to replicate the taste and must say I did succeed to some extent. After all some things always taste best when eaten at the road side. I am sure you all agree. But here's how I went about ...

Date and Walnut Cake (Getting into the Christmas Spirit)
2007-12-04 13:38:00
Ok Ok I know the last recipe I posted was 3 weeks back and could have posted at least 3 more recipes in these last 3 weeks but I did not. Why Not? I don't know. Call it a Blogger's Block (which sounds so much better than calling it simply Laziness, doesn't it?). Well thankfully I have managed to overcome this block or whatever it was that was keeping me from blogging and here for you is this scrummy yummy Date and Walnut Cake .Now most of us have read about the Daring Bakers on the Blogosphere. Every time I see there latest beautiful and delicious creation I have this great urge to be one of them, but to tell you the truth I don't think I am up to it, because the title that would really suit me more is Trial and Error Baker. Yes that is what I am . Because all my baking is done on this one principle. In fact in my case it is less Trial and more Error. The maximum errors I make in my kitchen are during my baking sessions. My husband and son have on so many occasions bravely eaten...

Mix Vegetable Pickle (A must-make in winter)
2007-11-17 17:06:00
I call this a must-make (a word I just conjured up) because it used to be a winter must-make in my Aai's (mom's) kitchen all through my school and teen years. She still makes it ,though probably in smaller quantities as my sister and I are not there anymore to hog it with every meal. This is a winter specialty as the vegetables are always so much fresher and appealing then ,than in the hot summers in India. So I am continuing the tradition even in England where funnily enough it is cold for almost three quarters of the year if not more. The cold weather somewhat demands that I make this hot and spicy pickle .It's terribly easy to make and can be made even as a last minute addition to spice up a meal. Infact it's so easy that I had second (and even third) thoughts about posting it as a recipe on my blog, but something so delicious has to be shared. Right? So here goes:You need:2 carrots finely diced,1 cup small cauliflower florets, juice of one lemon,6 green chillies cut into small ...

Paneer Jalfrezi (A spicy end to a very sweet Diwali)
2007-11-13 10:40:00
After a very sweet Diwali I thought a spicy Jalfrezi was a good recipe to post . This is a firm favourite in my house. Actually anything with paneer is always welcome in my family, that's particularly because I adore paneer. My husband teases me by saying that my face glows with happiness when I cook ,eat or even buy paneer. I don't believe him and know he exaggerates. But I can't deny the fact that I love it. I don't know what the word Jalfrezi means but I have always associated the word Jal with fire and therefore make this dish a little more fiery than normal. So here's my very simple recipe for a spicy and mouth-watering Paneer Jalfrezi:Ingredients:200 gms Paneer cubes,1 large onion chopped (chop them into small square shapes if possible),3/4 cloves garlic crushed,1/2 inch piece ginger grated or 1 tspn ginger paste,2 large tomatoes coarsely pureed,1 tspn concentrated tomato puree (optional),1 large green capsicum cut into small square shapes,4 baby corn (each one cut into 2 ...

Colours Of Italy : My Photo Entry to Click
2007-10-31 21:45:00
Colours of Italy I have always wanted to show off this picture, but never really got the chance . So I had it on my profile for somedays but that size was so small that I wonder how many people even gave it a second glance. But Bee and Jai of Jugalbandi have now created the perfect platform in the form of Click for budding photographers like me to showcase my attempts at food photography. A friend of mine visited Italy some months back and brought me this beautiful Pasta . I had never before seen Pasta so colourful or in such cute shapes. There were actually small pasta bicycles in there . I could not bring myself to cook this pasta for a very long time and just left it in a glass container where I could admire it.Now I hope the Judges admire it even more.

Palak Paneer from UK
2007-10-23 19:51:00
I call this dish Palak Paneer from UK because I saw this recipe on a show on UKTV Food. I am always intrigued when English chefs cook Indian food on TV. All the ingredients seems so much more exotic when they talk about it. Everyday items from an Indian Kitchen like curry leaves, cumin powder, garam masala, fresh coriander and ginger-garlic paste which are used by me without giving them a second thought appear so much more glamorous on TV. Terms like beautiful and gorgeous are used very frequently to describe very commonly used spices, but I must say they do make you see stuff in your own kitchen from a different perspective. And I like that. sometimes while cooking something mundane I pretend I am on a TV show and say things like "Now lets put some of this gorgeous yellow turmeric powder in our curry" or "I am going to chop some of this beautiful fresh green coriander and garnish my lovely crunchy salad" It really makes me laugh while cooking and takes away some of the boredom out o...

Autumn in a plate
2007-10-16 15:08:00
Fall : The most colourful and vibrant season of the four. The air is cold and crisp and Nature shows off it's most flamboyant side. It fills me with joy. Makes me want to be a child again and go frolicking in the multi-coloured leaves scattered all over the walkways. In fact last Autumn I did just that. On my way back home from somewhere I came across a stretch of footpath that was so thickly covered with coloured leaves that I just could not stop myself from kicking and blowing the leaves as I walked . Those are moments I will always cherish. Even the markets are so colourful . There too the theme is red ,yellow and orange. My favourites are pumpkin, butternut squash , sweet potatoes, red and yellow peppers and of course last but definitely definitely not the least sharon fruit or persimmon as it is otherwise known. I could live on these for the next few weeks. The Soup you see here is the perfect celebration of Autumn. It's the perfect food on a cold October night with warm crust...

Soft Boiled Egg with Toasted Soldiers (My Photo Entry to Click)
2007-10-15 13:14:00
Sometimes the most simple things in life turn out to be the most beautiful . And this photo I took a few months back is a classic example of that. Eggs with toast ! Can breakfast get any simpler than that? But don't you feel like just picking up one of the toasted soldiers (that's what my son likes to call them) and dipping it in the soft egg to savour the delicious taste of the soft egg yolk? Come on , admit it. So this is the pic I have chosen for the new photography event called Click which is being hosted by Bee and Jai at Jugalbandi .Since I started blogging my photography has improved by leaps and bounds and at the cost of sounding immodest I am going to say that I am proud of this picture .I hope the judges like it just as much. I have captured this image on my Sony DSC-P73. This photo is part of a previous post I made in February this year. You can check it out here.Wish me luck!!

Lunch box Idea no 5
2007-10-13 14:28:00
Ok guys here's the fifth idea. This box looks a bit empty compared to the previous ones but believe me the bread rolls here are so filling that you don't really need too many other accompaniments with them.So this one contains :Bread Rolls with mix veg and paneer stuffing,Pitted Dates andWaterThe recipe for the Bread rolls is hereAs a variation for the stuffing you can make it with Boiled and crumbled hard boiled eggs and and grated cheese.Ladies this is the last lunch box in this series. Do not worry I'll keep posting new ideas quite frequently.

Lunch Box Idea No 3
2007-10-03 11:44:00
Ok people here is my third lunch box. The accompaniments are much the same as the previous one with the exception of the cubed pineapple instead of the mango. This time around I made sandwiches in which I first put a thick layer of peanut butter on one of the slices, topped it with not very thin slices of cucumber, then sprinkled some grated cheese on top and dotted it with tomato ketchup. I used Dutch Edam cheese which is lower in fat than the normal cheddar but use any which easily available to you. For additional filling use crispy leaves of lettuce.Believe me the crispy fresh cucumber, the cheese and the crunchy peanut butter altogether make one yummy sandwich Go on give it a try!

Lunch Box Idea No 2
2007-09-30 11:09:00
Here's my second lunch box idea. This one contains chapati and omelette rolls . I frequently add finely chopped spinach and finely grated carrots to the omelette mixture along with some cheese, and ofcourse salt and pepper. This fortifies the omelette even more and makes it yummy too. Wrapping it partially in foil makes it easy to handle for little hands. This time around the accompaniments are diced mango, the usual raisin box and a strawberry yogurt squeezy, which is the star attraction for my son. But it's healthy so I don't worry. The school encourages the children to eat a lot of fruit, so the fruit variety in the lunch box is important. Fruit which go particularly well in the lunch box are peaches, grapes, pomogranate, pineapples, small oranges, small fun-size bananas , apples(but these I wash in salted water so they don't discolour) and ofcourse mangoesI normally avoid cherries ,plums and lychees as they are very juicy and tend to drip and stain the uniform T-shirt.

A Packed Lunch for a Food Loving Kid Part 1
2007-09-26 13:13:00
Packing a balanced meal in a lunch box requires a bit of imagination and a bit of planning. I remember when I was in school my mother packed 2 dabbas (boxes) for me. One contained some dry snacks which I gobbled in the short break at 10.30 and the other was a more elaborate affair with chapatis and vegetables, sometimes even curd rice with some mango pickle which was the lunch eaten at 12.30 . My mother being the kind of person she is always managed to make the lunch box interesting so much so that I was always a bit reluctant to share my lunch with any of my friends and neither was I ever interested in what they had brought. I did my schooling in the 80s and there were no pre-packed attractive yogurt pots, or cheese strings or cute mini boxes of raisins that could easily be packed as an accompaniment to the main meal . Yet my lunch box with its simple but imaginatively packed food was something that always caught my friend's attention. Now that I am a mother and have to pack...

Today I an sharing with you a small write-up I did for a weekly by the name of "Intelligent Pune". It was a fun experience for me and thought all of you would like to read it too. For all my bloggo-buddies from Pune you can buy this weekly at a newspaper agents. To see the actual page online visit www.intelligentpune.com . The article is called " I miss my Desi-Tadka" Its not possible to read the article online though so here it is for you.All people living abroad get home-sick sometime in life but have you ever heard of the term gadget- sick? Well now you have . I get gadget-sick quite often since I came to the UK. I miss all those simple but traditional gadgets that are such must-haves in any Indian kitchen. They assist you in the most cumbersome tasks and make life so much easier. I was particularly gadget sick today and the contraption I desperately wanted was the coconut scraper (yeah that one with the curved blade which scrapes coconuts beautifully). Ukdiche Modak (JFI Rice)
2007-08-30 15:13:00
15th September is Ganesh Chaturthi and I am already in a tizzy. We are celebrating the Ganpati Festival this year at our home in the UK for the first time and boy are we excited about it. I have always celebrated this festival with the rest of my family so there was always either my mother or then later my mom-in-law who were in charge .This is the first time that I am going to be completely responsible for the way things turn out. So I am excited as well as nervous.I already have visions of how I am going to decorate the room in which the Ganesh idol will be placed and what kind of sweets I can make for the daily Puja and Aarti. Speaking of sweets brings to mind the Show Stopper of the Festival Lunch, which are these Ukdiche Modak.Ganesh Chaturthi and Ukdiche Modak have to go hand in hand. I cannot celebrate this day without these delicious creations. So best way to ensure that you can make these, is to take a trial run a few days before the actual day of the festival. And that's e...

Centrepiece for an Asian Table-Setting
2007-08-20 10:36:00
My Aai (Mom) always says : "Good food must be accompanied by a great setting. They have go to hand in hand. Before a guest actually tastes the food, it is the setting of the table that should appeal to the eyes."Since childhood I have seen my mom come up with the most delightful table centre pieces in a matter of minutes using very simple accessories easily available. She mostly works with flower petals and lamps and has beautiful ethnic centrepieces particularly during Diwali and Dassera. Now thankfully her penchant for these beautiful decorations has rubbed off a bit on me. Now my problem is my dining table which is small . I mean calling it small is actually an understatement. It can barely accommodate the three of us with our plates and glasses. So having a centrepiece on the table when I have guests over is possible only if I lay out a buffet. Even then it has to me a small arrangement . I mean how much ever I love to have one the guests would definitely like to have some food ...

Dal Dhokli (Can we call it Indian Pasta?)
2007-08-13 15:16:00
The other day a few friends came over for a little tea party at my place . Actually calling our get-togethers "little" is a big joke. I'll tell you why. We meet once every week at someones place and since last year our group has slowly and gradually become quite large (we are 7 ladies and 10 kids). The agenda is that the kids play for 2 to 3 hours and we ladies get to chat, laugh and generally let our hair down. There's also plenty to eat, so much so that we have made and eaten all possible popular snacks till date and quite often run out of ideas. Now we have very solemnly decided on numerous occasions that the main aim of our meeting on a weekly basis is that the kids get to play together and since all of us have exhibited their cooking skills by now ,henceforth we will have only tea and biscuits for us ladies and a few dry snacks for the kids. As soon as we make this resolution all of us earnestly nod our heads and agree that the next tea will be strictly tea and biscs only and...

Matar Paneer, Frozen Phulkas and Cucumber Spirals { Summer Express Cooking
2007-08-10 12:12:00
When I read about Shaheen's Summer time Express Cooking Event (Meals under 30 mins) my first thought was "Oh but that's what I do practically everyday when I cook an entire lunch for my husband's tiffin . Yes he does carry a complete Indian Lunch sans rice almost everyday to office.(Barring those days when he is out of office all day and has to MAKE DO with a delicious baguette sandwich from Upper Crust.I admit it needs a bit of pre-planning to cook a meal in 30 mins or less but thats no hassle once you are in the habit of doing it. Besides the daily tiffin lunch the other times when I want a good meal on the table in a very short time is on weekends. Yes being a full-time home-maker I spend quite a lot of my time during the week in my kitchen, (in fact most of my elaborate meals are made during the week because I do have the time for them ).So its only fair that I want to spend more time relaxing with my family on weekends , but at the same time have a delicious meal on the table...

Mirchi Bhaji /Batter-fried Chillies (A Special Farmaish)
2007-08-07 22:46:00
My hubby although a food lover doesn't frequently request (read that as pester) me to make any particular kinds of food . He loves everything I make and eats it with gusto. So once in a while when he has a craving for something it's simply impossible to ignore. Then even if it is a deep-fried item like bhajis (which I normally completely avoid making) I oblige. His craving was for Moong dal bhajis which we all know are simply irresistible. So I made them. Now anytime we speak about foods like bhajis or batata wadas my hubby always tells me " Aai always fries a couple of chilli bhajis in the last remaining batter and they are simply awesome . They give a kind of kick to the whole batch of bhajis. " So I too fried a couple of them dipped in the same moong dal batter. And although I simply could not bring myself to eat any, hubby dear definitely ate them with great relish. Just watching him eat them gave me immense satisfaction. He even asked me to pack some in his lunch box th...

Banana Pancakes (A Sunday Breakfast)
2007-08-05 22:27:00
An ideal Sunday morning begins very late without any alarm to wake you up (I make it a point to not have any kind of time -keeping device at my bedside on Saturday night.) Now Sunday has to start with a very substantial breakfast and though my top favourites are and will always remain Sabudana Khichadi, Pohe and Idli Sambar I do also like the typical english 5 item breakfast of :1.eggs (fried, soft-boiled,omelette,or scrambled) I love them in all these delicious forms2.toast (ideally with butter, but not advisable since I need to count my calories)3.beans 4.sauted mushrooms and ofcourse 5.delicious crispy hash brownsAccompanying all the above is a tall glass of juice. And that goes for all three of us. Even my 5 yr old adores it and enjoys it to the very last crumb. By the way let me tell you that he aspires to be a chef one day. At least thats the latest ambition. It could change any day as it keeps changing all the time. But till it lasts he constantly wants to help me in the kitc...

Meme: 7 Random Facts About Me.
2007-07-24 21:14:00
Treasure in my GardenWhen Nabeela tagged me for this meme, my first reaction was 7 is too many. Do I really have that many things that I can easily share with everyone. I wanted to do this meme ,but I could not come up with any such facts. Then I spoke to my husband about it and he had 7 facts about me. In fact some of the things he pointed out were quite funny and some I did not agree with. I was like " No , I don't do that." or "What ! Ofcourse I am not like that ". And this after 10 years of marriage. But atleast it got me started. So here they are:1. In my daily routine I set the alarm in my mobile phone at least at 4/5 different times in the whole day. Wondering what I am talking about ? Well ,you see we all carry out our daily tasks in accordance with the clock. So instead of me having to go and check the clock every few mins , I just set an alarm, so the clock itself reminds me as to what time it is and what I should be doing then. Still not clear. Let me elaborate further: T...
