Recovering??
2009-09-15 20:44:00 Harmon is home and seems to be resting comfortably. He isn’t too interested in eating or drinking much and I’m sure I wouldn’t be if I had that stitched up chin either. He loves it when I lay next to him and scratch his head, under his floppy protective collar and around the underside of ...
This is Harmon?..
2009-09-14 06:05:00 He’s 16 years old, and has been around since before my own child. I have a hard time remembering life before Harmon. If you’ve never had a beloved pet, if you’ve never known the beauty of their unconditional love, you can stop reading and I won’t fault you. I’d rather you click away than try and ...

Lemon Mint Potato Salad with Green Beans
2009-09-07 03:30:00 I’m not sure why, but I’ve been rather shy about mint in my cooking career. Did I have a traumatic experience with mint at some point in my life? The overdose on wintergreen Life Savers that I went through as a child? Why has mint not been forefront in my culinary dishes? I haven’t an answer, ... Absorbed
2009-09-04 17:26:00 I was more than thrilled to be contacted by Penguin Publishers asking if I wished to receive a copy of Laura Shapiro’s bio of Julia Child to review. I love the perks of food blogging! Just a caveat: I am probably one of the minority of the food blogging world who hasn’t jumped all over Julie ...

Banana Bonanza
2009-08-31 05:21:00 Banana bread? Oh yawwwwwnnn……seriously? Oh my yes! Seriously! If you are at all a fan of a good banana bread, one that smells perfectly banana-y, is superbly moist and tender, with the added attraction of caramelized banana pieces on top- yes! on top!- of the bread, then you really, I mean, really need to give this recipe ... Deconstructing Dukka
2008-06-09 02:23:00 Nuts, seeds…..it isn’t too complicated, but in trying to find out more information about this aromatic and amazing Middle Eastern spice mix (say ‘Doo-kah), I came across more variations on a theme than I ever anticipated. It’s just nuts. And seeds! But apparently, it’s one of those ‘authentic’ spice blends that varies as much as the ...
It’s JUNE? Where??
2008-06-03 15:56:00 The calendar is wrong. Or somewhere, the weather hasn’t realized that it’s June . Not in our neck of the woods. Despite the fact that on Sunday, the first day of the most glorious of summer months, it was a beautifully warm, sunny and exceptionally perfect day that was spent in a near idyllic state staring at the diamond flecked waters of Loveless Lake, it disappeared by the following morning, leaving in its wake a tepid memory to carry us through. Severe storms and more hail are forecasted for later in the week. We’ve become hail-weary in our state. This is why: (photo courtesy of Mpls Star Tribune) Folks, those are not eggs- that is hail. Ice stones thrown from the sky with such force that they shatter windows, siding, trees, shrubs and anything unfortunate enough to stand in its way. They turn your car into a pock-marked sorry little thing. It’s NOT fun. This was the result of a Memorial Weekend storm that spawned a tornado barely 5 miles from us, destroyi...
Dairy gets a ?Dear John? letter?.
2008-05-30 16:27:00 An Open Letter To All Things Casein- I’m breaking up with you for good, and no- this will not be an on-again, off-again deal. We’re done. I have loved you and been faithful to you and yet lately you have given me nothing but heartbreak. You have become unfaithful to me. I trusted you for so many ... More About: John , Dairy
Millet Salad with Corn and Pepper
2008-05-27 18:26:00 I’m going crazy about grain, but this is a very good thing as opposed to going nuts for something like deep fried cheese curds, washed down with a diet soda (with Splenda!) and tackling a mountain of ice cream slathered in hot fudge for dessert. Ahhh….no. Ok, well I admit to a little frozen yogurt action but ... More About: Corn , Salad , Pepper

2008-05-23 05:49:00 But first, a look at the colors of Springtime in Minnesota. And yes, it was as beautiful as it looks. Everyone loves sandwiches, part 2
2008-05-22 15:53:00 The current issue of Eating Well magazine has the mother lode of exotic burger recipes for summer grilling, courtesy of meat-meister Bruce Aidells. As soon as I read over them, I mentally tagged almost all of them for a trial run in my kitchen. We LOVE burgers in this house, and what could be better ... More About: Part , Sandwiches
Everyone loves sandwiches
2008-05-19 14:51:00 Although it is widely debated on whether or not the 4th Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu, truly did invent the modern sandwich, it’s more likely that any history you find on the subject will list him as only the namesake, not the inventor. Montagu apparently was quite the gambler- among other afflictions and incompetencies- and ... More About: Sandwiches
Splendid Risotto
2008-05-14 02:18:00 One thing that you probably don’t know about me is that I am an avid bird watcher, and this time of year is really fun to keep my eyes on the surrounding trees as it is prime Warbler migration, and lots of really interesting birds are making their way through Minnesota to their summer homes ... Springtime in Minnesota
2008-05-05 16:24:00 We all know words words or phrases that instill in us a wonderful sense of joy and contentment. For my 14-year old, I think the word ‘Dinnertime!’ or the phrase ‘Steak for dinner!’ would be his top choice. I know lots of folks who would love to hear ‘Time for dessert!’ or ‘How ’bout some ... Painting a thousand words
2008-05-03 18:47:00 I got a heavy dose of lentil fever this week. Thankfully I had the motivation to toss this together prior to languishing on the sofa with yet another rotten head cold as then Mike had at least something reasonable to eat while I sputtered, hacked and dripped through a few miserable days. It was nice ... More About: Painting , Words , Thousand

2008-04-29 15:39:00 Sometimes I feel like mentally flogging myself for not going with my gut instinct when it first urges me to do something, and on occasion, it really comes back to slap me good. Szechuan Chicken and Red Rice Salad
2008-04-25 16:57:00 In the back of my mind I have been aware that there is a whole range of rice varieties out there that our mild midwestern palates have yet to conquer; grains like black or red rice, but I never really thought about it much past ‘Hmm…. wonder what that tastes like?’ and then of course, ... Foods worth repeating
2008-04-14 14:33:00 The only reason that I will never make a dish twice is if I happen to come across a recipe that is so bad even my talents in the Extreme Recipe Makeover department couldn’t possibly fix it. This doesn’t happen that often. As much as I love variety, and I love trying new recipes and ... More About: Worth , Foods

Roasted Red Pepper Sauce with Fresh Mozzarella
2008-04-02 16:57:00 I love pasta but have grown very weary of tomato based sauces, so this recipe from the February issue of Food and Wine magazine seemed a perfect alternative to something- again- from a jar. Winter refuses to release it?s grip on us?..
2008-03-31 16:39:00 All those bare patches of grass are getting a fresh covering of snow today; depending on who is making the weather report we will likely see anywhere from 4-8″ . The back yard had more bare spots as it faces south. The garden beds haven’t yet sprung to life as our temps have not been that consistently ... In sickness, and in health?with soup
2008-03-27 12:03:00 I firmly believe that one aspect of a good spouse is their willingness to care for you when you are sick. Granted, no one wants to deal with yucky stuff like the flu, or food poisoning, or even think about kissing you when your nose is disgusting and gloppy, but it happens, and having someone ...
