renewal, and feeding the pain
2010-04-04 14:47:00
Our life can be marked by our losses, which often can be more defining than the days that take our breath away. A loss in life is like running smack into a brick wall, after which you shake off the tweeting birds floating around your head and look around at what’s landed in your path. ...

sweetly broken
2010-03-26 17:33:00
I never expected to have the last six months. And I thank God for them, because it’s been a long preparation for this day. Harmon has slipped away, very quickly and over just the past few days. It doesn’t matter what’s wrong because we don’t need to know. We just know he’s very ill, he’s ...
soundtrack days
2010-03-22 14:25:00
I’ve noticed lately that my days seem to be having their own soundtracks. We’ve become a kind of soundtrack world, what with the abundant use of iTunes, the earbud generation and the incessant need to insert any type of sound into the hours. These are the playlists of our lives, what we exercise to, the ...

rutabaga simplicity, with eggs
2010-03-17 16:29:00
My Wednesday evenings are one night of the week where both of my guys are gone, and I have been really treasuring the ‘Alone’ time, pampering myself with candlelight, a glass of wine, classical music and usually some simple meals that are for my mouth only. Do you eat differently when you’re alone? And I ...

2010-03-16 14:17:00
There are lots of perks to this food blogging business. My most treasured aspect of it is how it challenges me to be a better cook, to think outside the box and to put together something that is fresh and interesting for my readers to find. I’ve driven myself out onto a proverbial ledge before ...

disappearing gingerbread
2010-03-12 16:39:00
I can safely say that gingerbread, or anything molasses-flavored, is going to go over well in my house. Some people have their chocolate, their Proustian moment that renders them poetic. Apparently ours is gingerbread. And it turns us into stealthy nibblers. I made a small pan of Martha Stewarts’s Chocolate Gingerbread, primarily as an olfactory ...
march sunshine
2010-03-09 23:10:00
March is a fickle friend, isn’t it? On my birthday in 2007, we had a blizzard that left us buried under 18″ of snow. Way back in 1991, I recall it being 67 degrees on my birthday. This year? We had temps in the 40′s, plenty of warm sunshine and slush covering the ground as ...

oatmeal pancakes
2010-03-05 15:23:00
I hope that I never get to a point in my life where I think I’ve seen it all. Especially when it comes to pancakes. If I had to pick a favorite breakfast option, pancakes might be fighting for top billing. While I do really enjoy pan roasted potatoes, especially with onion and pepper and ...
ahh??finally ajvar
2010-03-03 16:14:00
What’s that, you say? Ajvar? Is it AHJ-VAR? AGG-VAR? How do you say it?? And what the heck is it?!? It’s delicious, delightful, piquant, sweet and when spread on a toasted pita, a tiny slice of food heaven. The origin is Balkan in nature, and it shares it’s etymology with caviar, although there is no ...

2009-09-15 20:44:00
Harmon is home and seems to be resting comfortably. He isn’t too interested in eating or drinking much and I’m sure I wouldn’t be if I had that stitched up chin either. He loves it when I lay next to him and scratch his head, under his floppy protective collar and around the underside of ...
This is Harmon?..
2009-09-14 06:05:00
He’s 16 years old, and has been around since before my own child. I have a hard time remembering life before Harmon. If you’ve never had a beloved pet, if you’ve never known the beauty of their unconditional love, you can stop reading and I won’t fault you. I’d rather you click away than try and ...

Lemon Mint Potato Salad with Green Beans
2009-09-07 03:30:00
I’m not sure why, but I’ve been rather shy about mint in my cooking career. Did I have a traumatic experience with mint at some point in my life? The overdose on wintergreen Life Savers that I went through as a child? Why has mint not been forefront in my culinary dishes? I haven’t an answer, ...

Banana Bonanza
2009-08-31 05:21:00
Banana bread? Oh yawwwwwnnn……seriously? Oh my yes! Seriously! If you are at all a fan of a good banana bread, one that smells perfectly banana-y, is superbly moist and tender, with the added attraction of caramelized banana pieces on top- yes! on top!- of the bread, then you really, I mean, really need to give this recipe ...

Nuts, seeds…..it isn’t too complicated, but in trying to find out more information about this aromatic and amazing Middle Eastern spice mix (say ‘Doo-kah), I came across more variations on a theme than I ever anticipated. It’s just nuts. And seeds! But apparently, it’s one of those ‘authentic’ spice blends that varies as much as the ...
It’s JUNE? Where??
2008-06-03 15:56:00
The calendar is wrong. Or somewhere, the weather hasn’t realized that it’s June . Not in our neck of the woods. Despite the fact that on Sunday, the first day of the most glorious of summer months, it was a beautifully warm, sunny and exceptionally perfect day that was spent in a near idyllic state staring at the diamond flecked waters of Loveless Lake, it disappeared by the following morning, leaving in its wake a tepid memory to carry us through. Severe storms and more hail are forecasted for later in the week. We’ve become hail-weary in our state. This is why: (photo courtesy of Mpls Star Tribune) Folks, those are not eggs- that is hail. Ice stones thrown from the sky with such force that they shatter windows, siding, trees, shrubs and anything unfortunate enough to stand in its way. They turn your car into a pock-marked sorry little thing. It’s NOT fun. This was the result of a Memorial Weekend storm that spawned a tornado barely 5 miles from us, destroyi...

An Open Letter To All Things Casein- I’m breaking up with you for good, and no- this will not be an on-again, off-again deal. We’re done. Millet Salad with Corn and Pepper
2008-05-27 18:26:00
I’m going crazy about grain, but this is a very good thing as opposed to going nuts for something like deep fried cheese curds, washed down with a diet soda (with Splenda!) and tackling a mountain of ice cream slathered in hot fudge for dessert. Ahhh….no. Ok, well I admit to a little frozen yogurt action but ...

Everyone loves sandwiches, part 2
2008-05-22 15:53:00
The current issue of Eating Well magazine has the mother lode of exotic burger recipes for summer grilling, courtesy of meat-meister Bruce Aidells. Everyone loves sandwiches
2008-05-19 14:51:00
Although it is widely debated on whether or not the 4th Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu, truly did invent the modern sandwich, it’s more likely that any history you find on the subject will list him as only the namesake, not the inventor. Montagu apparently was quite the gambler- among other afflictions and incompetencies- and ...

We all know words words or phrases that instill in us a wonderful sense of joy and contentment. For my 14-year old, I think the word ‘Dinnertime!’ or the phrase ‘Steak for dinner!’ would be his top choice. I know lots of folks who would love to hear ‘Time for dessert!’ or ‘How ’bout some ...

Painting a thousand words
2008-05-03 18:47:00
I got a heavy dose of lentil fever this week. Thankfully I had the motivation to toss this together prior to languishing on the sofa with yet another rotten head cold as then Mike had at least something reasonable to eat while I sputtered, hacked and dripped through a few miserable days. It was nice ...

Sometimes I feel like mentally flogging myself for not going with my gut instinct when it first urges me to do something, and on occasion, it really comes back to slap me good.
