Gary Farrell 2003 Zinfandel Maple Vineyard Tina?s Block
2007-06-08 21:19:00
Classic aromas of peppercorns and crushed, ripe red berry fruit, followed by a mid-palate rich with the flavors of figs and dark berries. Despite all this richness and depth, though, it’s all held in check by a lovely texture. It’s a big wine, sure, but totally within reason. Call it a zinfandel for connoisseurs.

Rochioli Rose of Pinot Noir 2005
2007-06-08 21:15:00
This wine would be a beauty whatever color it was. There are interesting aromas of meat, and possibly something even a bit smokey. There’s a great acid balance on the palate, and a fabulously accurate pinot character. The finish is fresh and bright despite the depth of the mid-palate. Delicious juice.

Georges Duboeuf 2005 Regnie
2007-05-25 22:09:00
Violets, minerals, and fresh purple fruit mark the nose here, and the palate is a fascinating (and consistent) combination of fruit, minerals, and wet stones. There’s great acid here, and a sense of seriousness that some of the more familiar Beaujolais crus might have a hard time attaining. For the price–even for five dollars more!– ...

Le Printemps Rose Mendocino County 2006
2007-05-25 22:01:00
Though the blend is pinot noir (80%) and syrah (20%), both of them play together beautifully on the nose, which is rich with aromas of game, earth, damp leaves, roses, and raspberries. The alcohol is evident but not overpowering, and it certainly doesn’t overwhelm fresh strawberries of the mid-palate. There’s earth here, too, which gives ...

The Top Five Wines for Raw Oysters
2007-05-15 18:58:00
The brine and sweet fragrant flesh of a shucked oyster is an essential tribute to the summer. The wines served alongside should reflect a bit of sunshine and refreshment, too. Here is our guide to five wines, all for under $15, that are a wonderful match. Lustau Manzanilla Reserva (Jerez, Spain) This bone-dry sherry is a ...

Justified Extravagance
2007-05-11 21:37:00
I made it home last night by 8:30?the first time I?d been back to Chateau Brian before 10:00pm since the previous Friday. So to say I was ready to keel over would be an understatement. Upon landing on the couch with a surprisingly convincing thud?at approximately 57 pounds fully clothed, my thuds are different than most ...

Alvear ?Solera 1927? Pedro Ximénez
2007-05-04 20:04:00
This is a serious P.X. for a song–less than $20 for a 350ml bottle. A profound nose of dried apricots and figs leads to a mid-palate of rich, almost haunting notes of similarly dried fruits and hazelnuts. The texture is as velvety as can be and the sweetness is definitely on the far end of ...

The Top Ten Wines for Mother’s Day
2007-05-04 00:00:00
Mother’s day is one of the best time to open a bottle of wine. The nights are warming up, but–at least here in the good state of Pennsylvania–there is still just enough of a chill to warrant a few glasses of good wine. These wines will make great gifts and will be enjoyable by a wide ...

Prince Michel of Virginia Cabernet Sauvignon NV
2007-04-21 00:00:00
Sure, the wine was overoaked and a bit melodramatic, but it was, nonetheless, surprisingly tasty considering its provenance. Super-ripe raspberry fruit on the nose and deep aromas of coffee and vanilla lead the way to a palate full of big, brooding mocha notes, dark fruit on the mid-palate, and a finish that sings with chai-style ...

Jardin 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon, Stellenbosch
2007-04-21 00:00:00
A brick-like color leads to a nose of pure graphite and green pepper–quintessential cabernet sauvignon. That green quality follows through on the mid-palate, but it’s softened by some herbal tea and fig notes hovering around the edges. The finish, however, is the highlight of this wine: It comes on in waves: First red berry fruit, ...
