Home Winemaking Class, Saturday April 21st
2007-04-21 00:00:00
Dean, the instructor, had a very specific list of wine styles he requested for this class.  A Pinot Noir and a Pinot-based Sparkler, a pair of wines with differing ABV but the same varietal composition, a pair of wines with differing phenol structure but the same varietal composition, and finaly, a pair with differing oak ...

Jardin 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon, Stellenbosch
2007-04-20 15:50:00
A brick-like color leads to a nose of pure graphite and green pepper–quintessential cabernet sauvignon. That green quality follows through on the mid-palate, but it’s softened by some herbal tea and fig notes hovering around the edges. The finish, however, is the highlight of this wine: It comes on in waves: First red berry fruit, ...

Prince Michel of Virginia Cabernet Sauvignon NV
2007-04-20 15:44:00
Sure, the wine was overoaked and a bit melodramatic, but it was, nonetheless, surprisingly tasty considering its provenance. Super-ripe raspberry fruit on the nose and deep aromas of coffee and vanilla lead the way to a palate full of big, brooding mocha notes, dark fruit on the mid-palate, and a finish that sings with chai-style ...

I preach this to the Wine School?s students every chance I get, but since there are readers of the School?s blog who I haven?t yet had the chance to meet, it bears repeating: Few things ruin a wine-drinking experience like the wrong serving temperature.  Now, we all know that serving temp is a very personal ...

Katharina and Helmut Gangl HG Zweigelt Dry 2003 Luss
2007-04-12 00:00:00
Velvety smooth nose, like a cross between the game of syrah and the smoke of sangiovese, all of it brightened up nicely by ripe, red berry fruit. On the palate, white pepper flavors take the lead, though rich berry fruit carries the wine through on the finish. This is a delicious wine, and it’s a ...

Renwood 2003 Zinfandel “Old Vine”
2007-04-12 00:00:00
Blood-colored with a brick-like rim, this wine shows a nose of rich, ripe blue and black berries, the expected zinfandel spice, and something almost nutty. The palate is chewy and delicious, with notes of marzipan, a hint of eucalyptus on the mid-palate, and chocolate-covered espresso beans on the finish. What a lovely wine.

Cheap White Wine
2007-03-24 00:00:00
And now the time has come to praise cheap white wine. Or, to be accurate, green wine. I recently returned from a trip to Portugal, and much to my wife?s chagrin, there?s a new love in my life: Vinho Verde. It won?t replace her, of course?she?s put up with far too much of my whining over ...

Der Kufs 2005 Spatburgunder QbA
2007-03-17 00:00:00
I could spend all day sniffing a glass of this stuff–the nose is a beautiful combination of wild strawberries and rose petals, yet it’s in no way cloyingly perfume-y. The palate, however, shows flavors that are much deeper than the aromas suggest: Mushrooms, damp earth, and barnyard. All of it comes together, though, in the ...
