2008-01-08 15:09:00 Articles and articles have been passing through my mailbox highlighting Korean food in their lists of 2008 food trends. Yet I had to specifically point out that National Public Radio has also mentioned it. -- ZKFJ More About: Food , Trend , Korean food

KMK Doesn?t Like On the Border
2008-01-08 02:25:00 It’s not really an in-depth review from our friend Phoenix Storm at Kiss My Kimchi, but it’s an impression I expected. A lot of folks have been getting excited about the “Mexican” restaurant On the Border opening in Korea. On a positive note, it may be a hopeful trend of Mexican-inspired cuisine actually sticking in ... More About: Restaurant , On The Border

Avocado Sighting!
2008-01-03 10:58:00 I was picking up some dalk galbi and other things at E-Mart when I spied avocados in the fruit section–and not 10,000 a piece, either! I got me a pack of three for under 4,000 won. Has anyone else seen avocados this cheap in Korea (Costco and PX don’t count). -- ZKFJ
Christmas Cakes Abound
2007-12-24 15:58:00 As the Feetman Seoul states, Christmas is a romantic holiday in Korea and Japan. The music you hear everywhere is not Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas.” It’s more likely “Last Christmas (I Gave You My Heart)” and other post-1980 Christmas pop songs that have love themes to them. I remember hearing that KFC had successfully promoted ... More About: Cakes

Bourdain and Ripert in the Kitchen?
2007-12-21 02:08:00 Claudia at Profumo Profondo was lucky enough to go to Les Halles in New York, where Tony Bourdain was back at his old sautee station with none other than Eric Ripert manning the grill for an episode of “No Reservations.” They cooked for a whole service–not just for the cameras. She has the pics to ... More About: Kitchen , Pert

Where Meat Comes From
2007-12-14 06:01:00 This is one of those few areas where I’m political about food. Yes, I make fun of vegetarians a lot, but I respect them a lot more than meat eaters who want to pretend that their meat doesn’t come from a live animal. I myself have helped slaughter turkeys and have helped break down ... More About: Meat
My Marrakesh in Budget Travel

Food Trends of 2008 (Korean Food?s in There)
2007-12-11 15:07:00 4Hoteliers, a hospitality trade journal, has posted predictions on the food trends of 2008 , written by the company that has created some of the highest profile restaurants in the world (the late Windows on the World in the World Trade Center, the Rainbow Room, and five three-star restaurants in New York). The Korean King Crab Experience
2007-12-11 02:29:00 I pass by these restaurants with the giant crabs on them all the time in Korea, and I’ve seen them in Japan. I haven’t gone to one yet because they are prohibitively expensive. I’ve had what Korean s call dae kei ??, or big crab. That was from a street vendor (one ... More About: Experience , King , Crab
My First Foie
2007-12-10 16:49:00 Remember this? I bought it at Chef Meili Delicatessen a few months ago. Someone had special ordered it and never picked it up. It wasn’t cheap, but I bought it on impulse (I’m an impulsive food buyer–you should see the Japanese meat grinder I’ve barely taken out of the box). Even though I’m a ...

Chef Meili: Austrian Heart
2007-12-08 02:00:00 Chef Meili interior at night It looks like Chef Meili is getting respect from the Seoul foodie crowd. I had featured the Chef Meili Delicatessen in Itaewon earlier. Yet I didn’t feel like I could do a good piece on the main Chef Meili restaurant itself without going there a couple of times. Chef ... More About: Restaurant , Heart , Chef , Austrian

Petra: Home of the Hubbly Bubbly
2007-12-04 02:16:00 I’ve had a little Middle Eastern food in Korea, all of it in Itaewon. It’s been okay. I did get served a plate of tabouleh without any bulghur. Is that legal? So I’ve been looking for some good authentic Middle Eastern fare. So that brings me to why we were tagging along behind a Jordanian ... More About: Restaurant , Home , Petra , Bubbly
The Korean Cheese Shortage
2007-12-03 07:58:00 (..and I don’t mean the Wondergirls.) “But Asians can’t handle dairy products.” That’s a debate for a later time. Kore an pizza makers have started raising prices because China is consuming a lot more dairy–so the price of cheese is going up. -- ZKFJ More About: News , Cheese
Mad About Bulgarian Yogurt
2007-11-29 02:04:00 And not the “Mad About You” type of “Mad About.” This story by Bulgarian news source news.bg is a bit choppy on the English. What I’ve gathered is that Japanese and Korean businessmen are nervous about Bulgarian yogurt entering their respective markets. Bulgarian yogurt from Meiji Dairies Corp. has taken the largest share of the Japanese market at 39%. Ready for the classic line? “Korean businessmen Kang Choy and Cho Choy expressed their concern Bulgarian Yogurt will become #1 in Korea.” Yeah, because God forbid that a foreign company succeed in the Korean market. -- ZKFJ
Christmas Dinner in Korea
2007-11-28 06:14:00 I just remembered–Galbijim has a whole page dedicated to tracking down Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners in Kore a , as well as turkeys. May I also add that I’ve heard a rumor that Chef Meilinger (Chef Meili) plans to have roast goose with an Old Worlde European spread. -- ZKFJ More About: Dinner

Good Dark Hot Chocolate
2007-11-27 15:39:00 Let’s get these Christmas Chronicles rollin’. The holidays are a tough time for ex-pats who are away from their families. I do the best I can to overcompensate with food and beverages. I’m craving some of my egg nog. Gotta make some of that soon. In the meantime, I’ve been enjoying this hot chocolate that’s recently hit the Korean market. This past year, we’ve been seeing Korea fall in love with dark chocolate. They are known by the percentages of pure cacao they have in them. They have been getting so high on the cacao count that they’re not far from being baking chocolate, which would ironically be useful. This dark hot chocolate does take some getting used to. But I’ve grown to like it. Like all my hot chocolates, I doctor it up with a dash of cinnamon, a pinch of freeze-dried coffee, and a dab of butter. The butter really does it. Oh, I’m feeling cozy right now. When will they install fireplaces in Kore... More About: Hot Chocolate , Chocolate , Dark , Good
Toilet-themed Restaurant
2007-11-27 06:15:00 My friend found this on Asian Pop with YeinJee. This toilet-themed restaurant, a chain really, is in Taiwan. Nonetheless, I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before we see one of these in Korea. -- ZKFJ More About: Restaurant , Toilet

Han Jeong Shik III ? Tuna Kimchi Jangol (?? ?? ??)
2007-11-24 09:14:00 Fall is my favorite day of the year. And it came and went quickly. I arrived at work, and it was freezing. We turned on the heater, but it doesn’t warm up the building for a couple of hours. I needed something hot and soothing to give me energy for the day. Luckily Korean food was ... Mean Greens
2007-11-24 09:03:00 There ain’t no collard greens in Korea, but it don’t mean a Southerner can’t get his fix. Southern cuisine, you know, the original melting pot cuisine that blended Cajun French, West African, colonial Spanish, British, and Irish cuisines with a touch of Texas–is finally getting the recognition it deserves from the culinary elite. The collards. The ... More About: Greens
Perfect Potato Chips
More articles from this author:2007-11-24 08:47:00 (Or crisps for the non-North American readers) You know, many of us have made potato chips at home. They’re easy to make. Just thinly slice some potatoes through a slicer or a food processor, drop them in oil, and they’re done. Yet I think we all end up with more soggy chips than we want. And ...
