Avocado Sighting!

I was picking up some dalk galbi and other things at E-Mart when I spied avocados in the fruit section–and not 10,000 a piece, either!  I got me a pack of three for under 4,000 won. Has anyone else seen avocados this cheap in Korea (Costco and PX don’t count). -- ZKFJ

And not the “Mad About You” type of “Mad About.” This story by Bulgarian news source news.bg is a bit choppy on the English.  What I’ve gathered is that Japanese and Korean businessmen are nervous about Bulgarian yogurt entering their respective markets.  Bulgarian yogurt from Meiji Dairies Corp. has taken the largest share of the Japanese market at 39%. Ready for the classic line? “Korean businessmen Kang Choy and Cho Choy expressed their concern Bulgarian Yogurt will become #1 in Korea.” Yeah, because God forbid that a foreign company succeed in the Korean market. -- ZKFJ

Good Dark Hot Chocolate

Let’s get these Christmas Chronicles rollin’.  The holidays are a tough time for ex-pats who are away from their families.  I do the best I can to overcompensate with food and beverages.  I’m craving some of my egg nog.  Gotta make some of that soon. In the meantime, I’ve been enjoying this hot chocolate that’s recently hit the Korean market.  This past year, we’ve been seeing Korea fall in love with dark chocolate.  They are known by the percentages of pure cacao they have in them.  They have been getting so high on the cacao count that they’re not far from being baking chocolate, which would ironically be useful. This dark hot chocolate does take some getting used to.  But I’ve grown to like it.  Like all my hot chocolates, I doctor it up with a dash of cinnamon, a pinch of freeze-dried coffee, and a dab of butter.  The butter really does it. Oh, I’m feeling cozy right now.  When will they install fireplaces in Kore...
