Did you spend too much for that item on your shopping list?While shopping I remembered I needed a new mop. I think the last time I purchased a mob gas was under $2 a gallon. I digress.I didn't need something fancy so I went for the $9 mop.After getting all my grocery items rung up and in my cart. I decided to do a quick scan of my receipt. Imagine my surprise when I realized that the $9 mop rang up as $14!NowI'm getting into the habit of taking a quick scan of my grocery receipt right after I get it.This has a few benefits.1) It reminds me how much darn money I spend on groceries, which reinforces being more mindful of sales and savings.2) I find those little gotchas that cost me money, mis marked items, sale items that don't ring up as a sale items, and high ticket items that I didn't realize were so expensive.3) It also reminds me how much things should cost. It seems every time I turn around I'm reading another article about the rising cost of food.I've already blogged about this topic but it seems to be worth writing about again, it's getting worse not better.You can save at the store by always bringing your shopping list ( if I've said it once I've said it a thousands times) and go armed with coupons.As you may or may not know www.GroceryWiz.com has lots of coupons offerings, but there are many more options on the web and here are a few.www.thecouponsClippers.com - easy to use and lots of variety.www.centsoff.com - Cost money so you need to use a lot of coupons to make out.The Sunday newspaper.Hope this helps with the bottom line at the checkout.

It's now easier to manage your shopping list

The new GroceryWiz.com feature makes managing your shopping list easier.We have been getting a lot of feed back that it would be nice to be able to remove items from the shopping list from one spot. In other words, you have rice on your list but your realize you don't need it. Now instead of going to the rice/pasta category and finding rice on that page and unchecking the check box for rice to remove it, you follow the steps below.You choose "My List Options" from the main menu on most GroceryWiz.com pages, or you choose "Edit My Saved List" from the homepage once your logged in. Now, you will see all your items that are currently on your grocery list and you can remove any of these items by checking the check box next to them. It's more convenient than going to the category page of each item that you don't want on your list and unchecking the item there.

Publix Grocery Store First Impression

Have you ever wondered how different grocery stores measure up against one another?Which one would you pick? Do you have a favorite and a never go to again store?I recently visited, for the first time, a Publix grocery store in South Carolina. These stores are scattered though the south eastern sates such as Florida, South Carolina, and Georgia.The First thing I noticed was the parking lot, which had well marked green buggy collectors to drop your grocery cart off in once you are finished loading your groceries. Nice, some grocery stores don't have grocery cart collectors in the parking lot at all. Then the parking lot is one big buggy fest with rogue buggies slamming into the sides of parked cars.Walking through the door I was presented with a open layout that had all sixteen aisles laid out before me. Ok, so I'm on an education kick. First I had a discussion at the pub with an old high school buddy about how we really didn't learn much in high school, and we both agreed we could have had a much better high school learning experience.We both agreed that our children need a better education than we received.It seems I hear a lot about how America is ranking lower in education but didn't really understand where we rank until I picked up the Wall Street Journal (yes I read the Wall Street Journal are you impressed?) today and read how the United States ranked somewhere in the middle of the road.According to the WSJ article the top countries where the following:1) Finland2) Hong Kong3) Canada4) Taiwan5) Estonia6) Japan7) New ZealandUnited States wasn't in the top ten :-(The article noted that the United States spent more per student $8700 than the top ranked country Finland, which spent only $7,500What's going on? Just read another article on rising food cost in the WSJ.According to the article food cost is up 17% overall from one year ago.For example, eggs are up 38% over last year, Milk up 30%, and bread up 12%.Whats going on?There is a rising middle class in Asia and Latin America that is driving up demand.Many countries experienced a poor harvest last year, and the new demand for fuel products like ethanol made from grain are on the rise.So when heading to the grocery store make sure you have your grocery list in hand, and stay on top of those grocery coupons.

I recently bought my daughter a toy for her birthday. She kept reminding me that this toy was the number one item to put on the shopping list and that it could not be forgotten. The next time I went to the store I needed to get it.After searching around I found it, Aqua Dots!She loved it, and made all kinds of cool things with it. I spent some time this weekend clipping coupons and getting ready for the trip to the grocery store, and entered the store with my GroceryWiz.com shopping list in hand,I felt confident and ready to save!Soon I realized I had forgot my coupons at home, rats all that clipping for nothing!However, I realized that since I had taken the time to go through the Sunday paper to do the clipping I was up on all those sales that were being advertised, in fact many of them didn't even need coupons. So it wasn't a total loss after all.Lesson learned, you can still save at the store if you make sure you know what is on sale for that week, and the best way to do that is to go through the sale papers.

I like to save money and get things for free, doesn't every body?Who wants to pay full price for something when the person standing behind you in line is only paying half price for the same thing?This is where coupons come in, I'm going to be giving the whole coupon thing a try and see if I can actually save some money using them.I admit that I haven't been a big coupon user in the past. I'm not sure why. I guess I felt like they were just a few pennies here and there and didn't really seem worth the effort.However, I did see a piece on TV that showed a women that was able to save hundreds of dollars off of here grocery bill every month. Hmm... now that's what I'm talking about.I will be posting occasionally on how my coupon foray is going. Another New Feature or Two

We have a couple new features for you here at GroceryWiz!Yes, it's been a very busy month.The "Select more than one item from the same category" feature is less like a feature and more like a necessity. Truth be told, we new it was needed from the start but it took a while to get the feature working.The second feature, a floating window that shows the current items you have selected is really useful as a reminder as to what you have already added to your list. Any feed back on this one would be great, since I haven't heard much good or bad about it.CHECK OUT THE SCREEN SHOTS OF THE NEW FEATURES BELOW.

I recently bought a laptop, an HP Pavillion. It's a nice system but I'm still getting used to running the new Microsoft Vista operating system on it.I usually keep the laptop on the kitchen counter since it's easier to get to when I need it, looking up directions, recipes,coupons,phones numbers. You get the idea.Since my laptop is easily available in the kitchen I stared entering items into Grocery Wiz immediately when I run out of them. For example, as I'm making toast, I'm scraping for the last few morsels of butter at the bottom of the bowl. I stop my fruitless effort and I walk over to the laptop, enter butter into GroceryWiz and go back to scraping. It only takes a minute but the payoff is at the end of the week when I'm ready to go shopping.Instead of rummaging through the fridge and cuburds, I already have a lot of items that I need entered into my list. Is it just me, or does it seem that food costs are rising?Here are few tips on how to keep your grocery bill down.1) Always have a grocery list on hand when going to the store.2) Do your grocery shopping alone. This will keep you focused on price comparison and savings rather than running after the kids down the aisle.3) Don't go down aisles that don't have items on your grocery list. This way you won't be tempted to stray from what is on your list.4) Be careful when using coupons. If you buy something that you don't really need just because you have a coupon, you save nothing.I'm sure there are tons more ways to save at the store, but these are the ones that come to mind.

I like getting coupon discounts on grocery items, eating out, movie theater etc.....Who doesn't like getting a deal right?The problem is many times I found myself in a situation where I have a coupon for something but my coupons are at home.For example, I was at the movies the other night, while standing in line I remembered I had a coupon for free popcorn and coke if I purchased a popcorn and coke at the full price.Now considering the prices at today's movie theaters for movie snacks this saving is not to be taken lightly.This nagged on me for a while until I came up with a brilliant solution ( it's OK to brag once in a while). Why not keep the coupons in a folder in the car that way you will have them as situations come up where you need to use them. Eureka!Since I've made the change of keeping the coupons in the car I've found that I using them much more often, and at places I would have never thought to use them.Sometimes it's the little things that make a big difference.

We just added a new feature to Grocery Wiz!As you may or may not know, you can save your grocery list online by creating an account.You can return to Grocerywiz and log in with your user name and password to access your saved grocery list.This is all well and good, but sometimes when you visit GroceryWiz you want to add grocery items to your existing list and other times you want to start fresh, thus the new feature.Upon log in GroceryWiz will show your current saved list and give you the option to continue with your last list or clear your grocery list entirely and start fresh.Here is a screen shot of what it looks like when you log into GroceryWiz with a previously saved list.

My never-ending quest to make life easier found an outlet. A Robo t . Yes, I found a used iRobot. This is a carpet cleaning rascal. It will clean your carpet while you do other things like watch TV, or spend time with the family. I got the critter home and began charging the battery and found that the battery is dead on arrival. It won't charge. So off to ebay I go looking for a new battery. My hopes are that I never have to vacuum my carpet again, sigh...... We will see. Now if I can just get a robot to go grocery shopping for me.

It’s spring and that means cooking outside on the grill, yeah!I've already been on the net looking for good Barbecue BBQ sites. This one looked pretty good.So, there you are cooking at your grill. Flipping burgers and steaks. You don’t want to over/under cook them, so your hovering over the grill. This is particularly annoying when you have company over and would rather be talking to them, not babysitting the burgers and steaks.Behold, the wireless thermometer! Now you are free to leave those burgers and steaks alone on their own!All you have to do is look at your temp readings every once in a while.I’m not endorsing any single product, and to tell you the truth I have never tried a wireless thermometer, but it sounds like a cool idea. OK, I'm not trying to be an alarmist or anything, but I just read an article about wheat flour accidentally being added to ice cream, and now there is a recall on the ice cream because they are worried about people who have wheat allergies eating the ice cream.This incident doesn't seem that scary, but what is going on here? Why all of a sudden is this stuff popping up in the news?Of all the foods to contaminate, not the ice cream! Now that it has warmed up again we are back to garden work with a list of things to be done. The Jung le Garden awaits!The weeds have grow completely over last years garden, and it's up to my four year old and I to attack the weeds with a vengeance.With hoe and rack in hand, and lot of bottled water, we made a dent in the garden yesterday.Doing all this hard labor really makes me appreciate that fact that I can hop in the car and get what I need from the grocery store without breaking a sweat.

I was at the grocery store with my grocery list in hand, and ask the butcher where the hamburger was.He said, "Your in luck we have Black Angus hamburger, just in and on sale!".Of course I bought it. After all it was recommended by the butcher. Just between you and me, I don't have a clue what is so great about black Angus.Well a little wikipedia search filled in the blanks for me. Whats is going on with all this tainted pet food?This CNN article claims the tainted food may have came from China.It's terrible that pets are dying from bad food. Some pets are like children to people.When I first heard this story, I immediately thought to myself, are they sure it's just pet food and not in other items that are eaten by people!My dog and cat passed away last year, both at a ripe old age, so I don't have to worry about it.That is until today. I just bought my four year old two gold fish for Easter. Does this recall affect goldfish food. Hmm......

Garding Time

It's getting to be that time of year, and I'm gearing up to start my garden this year.My four year old and I started clearing out the weeds. Actually, they are only weeds if you don't want them. :-)We had a family meeting and decided each of us could pick two items to plant in the garden. We ended up with Onions, cucumbers, water Mellon, broccoli, and asparagus. Yum!If all goes well, I won't be needing to put those items on my grocery list. :-)

We just had snow last week and now this week we hit 72 degrees. Yeah!.The only problem is that now the mosquitoes are already out looking for blood.Definitely need to add "Off" to my grocery list.Well, I moved my log in link to the middle of the homepage of Grocery wiz.com. My hope is that this will remind visitors to log in when they first get to the site so they can reuse their last saved grocery list.I'm worried that visitors will forget to log in and and have to start with a new list from scratch.The whole idea of logging into the site is to be able to save the list for the next time you have to go to the store.I know how easy it is to forget to log in into the site. I have done it many times. Worst yet, I will have half my list created and realize I haven't logged in yet, bummer.

What better time to shop than on a Frida y night?The store is not crowded and you can jet through the aisles in a flash, and if you have a good grocery list in hand you can possibly break a land speed record. :-)Of course Sundays are the worst and should be avoided at all cost.
