Pumpkin-Sweet Potato Soup
2007-11-29 18:11:00
I am cooking from the left side of my brain. And I don't like it one bit! Well, truth be told, I'm actually doing more consulting in the kitchen than chopping and stirring and getting my hands all nice and sticky. Which is exactly the point. I must sit apart from all the action (and fun!), perched- pristine- in my wheelchair, and offer verbal guidance (the generous of spirit might even say,

Pumpkin Berry Muffins
2007-11-24 21:14:00
Yesterday we woke up to a surprise. The mesa and distant hills were powdered in white- the first snow of the season (am I ready for this?). The Kokopelli thermometer read twenty-two degrees. Steve made a morning fire in the kiva to warm us. Lucky for me, we had baked some vegan pumpkin muffins this week. Tender, break apart soul food for this bone-shivery goddess to nibble with her tea.

A Trio of Tasty Turkey Recipes (and a pardon)
2007-11-20 21:17:00
Thanksgiving will be cactus quiet here in the desert north of Santa Fe. No traveling. No fuss for us. Yet I felt inspired to thumb through my recipe file today. It's just habit. I guess it's not easy to let go of cooking for a family. Not yet, anyway. I still cook for four- even though we are down to two. I still buy too many salad greens. And big banana bunches that inevitably morph into black

Cranberry Crumble
2007-11-19 16:10:00
Who doesn't love a warm-from-the-oven fruit crisp or crumble? I'm a big fan. Obviously. Here's why. Tender, juicy melt-in-your mouth fruit. Brown sugar. Cinnamon. No eggs! No dairy. Which crowns it with precious vegan status. And Darling- best of all? Embarrassingly easy! No wrestling with stick-to-itself plastic wrap and rolling out finicky fall-apart gluten-free pie dough that (sorry!) never

Gluten-Free Dairy-Free Holiday Tips
2007-11-13 17:16:00
Getting through the holidays gluten-free- and dairy-free- can be tough. But then, the holidays were always a challenge for me because I was mostly vegetarian for decades (meaning ovo-lacto- but some of those years were off-and-on vegan). In truth, Gentle Reader, my holiday foods have often tended- shall we say- to be a tad different from mainstream holiday fare. Being the wild and free

Acorn Squash- With Attitude
2007-11-07 20:41:00
I deeply (if not profoundly!) doubt the ever expanding food blog galaxy needs yet another autumnal squash recipe, but. I can't help myself. Before the Charlie Brown smack down (aka hip incident), I threw together a flavor combo I am crazy about. Nutty for. Head over heals smack your lips and toss aside your chaste maple syrup Pilgrim traditions for. That's right. I got radical. I added chopped

Banana Chocolate Chip Bread

Score another one for the vegans of Planet Earth. And Planet Celiac, for that matter. After more than a few banana-induced mishaps (who knew baking egg-free gluten-free casein-free banana breads would prove so harrowing and unappetizingly gummy and well, just plain spirit crushing) Steve and I produced a sweet and tender loaf worthy of a mention. A shout of big thanks goes out to my buddy Clare

My Beef Stew Crush
2007-10-30 18:05:00
You wouldn't expect a former Vegetarian Goddess would fall in love with a beef stew, but that is precisely what happened this weekend. Shocking? Tell me about it. Just when you think you've got your life all figured out, and your tastes and preferences arranged in a tidy packet of self-identification and veggie piety- all Hades breaks loose. Celiac. Food allergies. Broken hip. Suddenly, your

First- thank you all for your kind and compassionate wishes for a speedy recovery. Such fabulous readers you are- every one of you. As our Italian friend, Sandra, once said to us- in her dead gorgeous Tuscan accent- I love you too much! So. I feel human again. Sparky- and Steve- Save the Day
2007-10-22 19:39:00
Meet Spar ky. He's my new bed and blanket companion. And is he a cuddler! A listener. There's an awful lot of imagery, sensation and emotion refracting inside this more-than-slightly addled brain of mine [this is a thinly veiled excuse for any bad writing that follows] but I wanted to send out a heartfelt thanks- lickity split!- to all of you, for your kind notes and sweet messages. Update...
2007-10-20 19:10:00
Hello everyone -- Late Wednesday night my mother fell and broke her hip, fracturing the neck of the femur above the proximal line. Since then, she has been through surgery to repair the damage and is recovering quickly. With any luck, she and Steve will be making the transition back to the casita to continue her recovery in the comforts of home, and will be back to posting on her blog in a few

2007-10-16 21:56:00
Just so you know? It's two in the afternoon. And I spent the day- so far- in bed. Snuggled beneath a Pendleton blanket, cruising the information highway on Steve's laptop. Nibbling pieces of smoked salmon. Approving Spicy Comments. Paying bills. Ordering heart shaped and U-shaped lavender pillows stuffed with rice and buckwheat [no, not to eat, Darling, to heat- in the microwave- till toasty

My Humble Petition
2007-10-13 23:14:00
Dear Wise and Merciful Goddess, There have been so many failures (or quasi-semi-successes not worth sharing) in my tiny blue tiled cocina of late, I'm spending days (yes, days!) feeling hollow from hunger because I can't find anything in the house to eat. I can usually toss together a tasty dinner built around leftover potatoes or rice with a piece of fish or some ground beef. Although, truth

Cozy Autumn Rice Bake
2007-10-09 20:49:00
The fall aspens are turning the Sangre de Cristo mountains into shades of gold and honey. Will and Joey invited us to take a Sunday drive up to the Santa Fe Ski Basin and one thing led to another and well, Gentle Reader, before you know it, this height-phobic and prone to altitude sickness goddess was perching her chilly tuchas on a chair lift cranking up the mountain past 10,000 feet. Peach Coffee Cake
2007-10-04 20:21:00
After a good ten days sans treats a certain individual was a wee bit cranky and in need of something to sweeten her disposition. Something fun for breakfast- not too sugary. And evocative of the season, perhaps? Then it had to have some cinnamon and nutmeg. Definitely. A spice cake. And maybe with buckwheat flour and maple syrup (my new favorite pairing). The last of the ripe organic peaches.

Winging it can get you into trouble. I know this. But I couldn't help myself. You see, I was just so (excruciatingly!) tired of pre-planning where to eat and schlepping bags of stale corn thins and green bananas that never get ripe and worrying myself into a veritable tizzy over whether or not some waiter-slash-actor might actually offer me an empathetic ear when I ask if the grilled tuna salad
How to Leave in 24 Hours
2007-09-22 22:00:00
On the way to Santa Fe you get a phone call. It's for your husband. You overhear snippets and wait patiently. There is interest in another script. Real interest. Driving talk turns on a dime from the grocery list (where you just added butternut squash in bumpy cursive) to the wisdom vs. craziness of dropping the day's plans and booking a flight to LAX. You sit quietly in the hot car, squinting

Stuffed Acorn Squash
2007-09-19 21:12:00
Yours truly has been stewing. Not in the culinary sense, Darling. I've been stewing about Sting- and how disappointed I am with the latest news (and Oy, the photo of him ducking his head, cringing in the back seat?) about him schtupping [Okay, maybe he didn't actually schtup- who knows?-maybe he innocently indulged in some lap dances in a post-concert-suffering-from-exhaustion kinda way] at the

Roasted Eggplant Tapenade
2007-09-17 19:40:00
Yesterday was hot and summery- not in a Meg Ryan breezy kind of way but in a sultry no air peel off your jeans, cowboy boots and socks steamy Jennifer Lopez in U Turn kind of way. Back to your skinniest Target sleeveless tee and pull-on jersey mini kind of way. We're talking hot. And here I was expecting Joey and Will for dinner. And our neighbor, Lee. And what was I planning on making? Roasted

Gluten-Free Goddess in Newsweek? Rock on.
2007-09-15 21:39:00
We just returned from our weekly Saturday jaunt into Santa Fe- to shop at Whole Foods, Trader Joe's or Wild Oats, depending on our mood and our menu plans. Today's mini road trip was a tad more exciting than our usual gluten-free shopping extravaganza, however, because today we stopped by Borders and picked up a copy of the September 17th Newsweek magazine- the one featuring an excellent article

Sunbutter Cookies
2007-09-12 23:52:00
I'm gonna miss these. But that doesn't mean you have to. I made these tasty cookies prior to uncovering my egg and sunflower allergy. Instead of using traditional peanut butter in this recipe, I tried sunflower butter- which has a golden nutty flavor not unlike peanut butter, but slightly different. Kinda like peanut butter's wacky brother. You know, slightly nutty. Fun. And you just might want

Good Karma Meatloaf Pie
2007-09-10 21:18:00
I'll just say it. I'm a comfort-foodie. I'm no chef- nor do I make overly complicated recipes with hard to find ingredients. I'm a country peasant rustic soup and roasted veggie soul at heart. So I'm not sorry to see the summer come to an end. The 100 degree days. The kitchen so hot you hesitate to ignite a single burner, never mind turn on the oven. Enough, already! Knowing the fall equinox is

Green Chile Harvest
2007-09-01 17:29:00
The colors of summer are spinning their last bit of magic before they deepen into an autumn palette. New Mexico skies darken earlier each day. The Fall Equinox is right around the corner. And in our small corner of the world that means only one thing. It's chile roasting time. Roasters are ubiquitous now- stoking their fires outside Whole Foods and Walmart alike, turning barrels of New Mexican

Champagne Vinegar Potato Salad
2007-08-29 23:58:00
It's been quiet and breezy this week here by the mesa. But the coyotes have been vocal beneath the bright harvest moon, waking me up at 2 AM with their hunting yelps. I feel restless and eager for the change fall brings. How about you? The summer has been long and hot. Too hot, many nights, to cook. That's when a salad can save your weary butt. If you've got a bag of potatoes, a purple onion,

Some time ago I participated in the Ten Things You Never Knew About Me meme. Since then I've been asked - perhaps a dozen times - to join in the Eight Random Facts About Me meme, and when Isaiah of Gluten-Free Bay e-mailed me, Tag - you're it! Spaghetti Squash New Mexican

Spaghetti Squash New Mexican This naturally gluten-free vegan recipe makes a tasty light meal for a weeknight supper. It also works as a flavorful side dish. Even those who don't ordinarily care for spaghetti squash (certain male individuals here at Casita Allrich) admit, This is actually very good! Well, yeah. Told ya. First, roast the squash. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. You'll
