Washington State vs New York Rieslings - Who Will Win?
2008-04-15 22:07:00 We had a wonderful time visiting with Gary Vay!Ner!Chuk! of Wine Library TV last week at Taste Washington 2008. On a one-to-one with Gary, we discussed not only Washington State wines, but Gary shared with us the possibility of him creating a new wine rating point system. With Washington State taking a new interest in one of their original grapes the Riesling, this episode #440 of the "Thunder Show" from Qwest Field in Seattle, Gary Vaynerchuk shows us a taste-off between Washington State and New York State Rieslings. I don't want to tell everything about this episode, but I am pleased to say it may be one of the reasons why Poet's Leap Riesling from Long Shadows is "leaping" off the shelves at the Wild Walla Walla Wine Woman. The winery is officially out but they found a few extra for me!!! More About: New-York

Seven Highlights From "Taste Washington - The Ultimate Taste Experience"
2008-04-10 16:04:00 There were many, but I chose just a few:1. The hospitality and attention to detail that was given to us from Veronica White with the MWW Group for the Washington Wine Commission.2. Banana bread pudding paired with Va Piano’s Cabernet Sauvignon served in the Media "Kasbah" Tent. Who knew it would be such an exquisite pairing?3. Great seeing so many old friends and smiling faces from Walla Walla.4. Couldn’t break myself away from the Kumamoto section of the Elliot Bay Oyster Bar.5. Too many laughs with Ilan Hall, Bravo TV’s Top Chef Winner Season 2 - - and he introduced me to his girlfriend. Both were very cute.6. Gary Vaynerchuk of Wine Library TV kissed my hand.7. Too many great wines, so I was bad - - did more swallowing than spitting. Okay - I am stepping away from the blog now and going back on "vacation." Spring Break For The Walla2 Wine Woman!
2008-04-02 16:26:00 It’s needed. Now, I am not going any place exotic. Just some time at home and maybe a few overnight trips. You know, I need a different routine for a few days. I haven’t taken any time off since my family dragged me camping to Montana in July for a much needed time away from everything - - everything, except the mosquitos, yellow jackets and wine, of course. It’s time to get outdoors and get the lawn, patio, decks and herb and rose gardens ready for warmer weather. This season I made an executive decision - the dandelions won’t get the best of me so I hired "professional killers" to knock them down.Steve and I have a few get-aways planned. The highlights are Taste Washington - "The Ultimate Taste Experience" in Seattle. Lots of wine to taste! Then the following weekend we’ll be attending an Elton John concert in Pullman. Can you believe, of all places, Sir Elton at Beasley Auditorium and not once - - twice? And in-between those two events, I will be hosting a Wild Walla Wal... aMaurice Malbec - 2005
2008-03-31 16:20:00 I bought this particular bottle of wine back in November during the Fall Release weekend. You know, Fall Release? The weekend in November when Christophe of Cayuse invites his list to Walla Walla to pick up their futures and those of us who are not on the list take advantage of it in other fun ways? And it was - - a fun and very memorable Saturday for me. I tasted so many great wines! And one of those wines was a 2005 Malbec from aMaurice. It was a beautiful day, too. The sun was shining and there was a gorgeous view of the mountains from the winery. The bottle has been sitting on top of the dining room wine rack and every time I walk by it beckons, “Yoo-hoo! Look at me! Unscrew me and pour me into a glass!” It finally got the best of me last Wednesday. I rationed it for three evenings and with every day, it became more interesting and just as tasty as the first night I opened it.A beautiful inky plum color with a nose of dark fruit. It reminded me of a huckleberry coffee cake fr...
Beloved Budo Kun Gone Wild In Walla Walla!
2008-03-29 23:42:00 If you have been following the recent tawdry headlines in the wine blogging-smut rag aka as Wine.ing 20, then you are aware of the recent sex sting operation that landed three well-known wine mascots in jail, - Australia's own Little Penguin, the Yellowtail Kangeroo and Los Angeles based Domaine547's beloved Budo Kun. Budo Kun recently made headlines for going above and beyond, giving awards to loser wine blogs who weren't cool enough to be nominated for the American Wine Blog Award. (Hell no, we aint sore losers!) Shock, dismay, angst and a whole hell of a lot of hand wringing has run through the wine label critter community. After hearing the news, the authorities assisted Domaine's other mascot, Cheese Wedge into protective custody safe from the exploitations of Budo Kun. In the past, Budo Kun has made threats to Cheese Wedge with a cheese slicer and a fondue pot. But charges were dropped last year when Budo Kun tried to smother Cheese Wedge into a Kraft plastic single wrap a... More About: Wild , Beloved
"Taste of the Terroir" at the Marcus Whitman
2008-03-27 15:58:00 A total of six Winemaker's Weekend events are planned for the 2008 Winemaker's Dinner Series to be held at the Marcus Whitman Hotel. The first event will be the weekend of April 18-19, featuring the "Women of Walla Walla Wine."I was thrilled, and of course felt humbly honored to be invited to the "Test-Fire Dinner" that was held at Chef Bear’s table last week. It's true I am a woman, but I am no winemaker. The dinner was like a dress-rehearsal for the "Women of Walla Walla Wine" Winemaker's Dinner and definitely an exciting sneak-peak for me. Included in the wine event will be wines from Walla Walla women winemakers; Mary Tuuri Derby and Dawn Kammer from DaMa Wines, Marie-Eve Gilla from Forgeron Cellars, Holly Turner from Three Rivers, Ashley Trout from Flying Trout Winery, Annette Bergevin and Amber Lane from Bergevin Lane Vineyards, and Jill Noble from Couvillion Winery. We "test fired" the menu and sampled seven courses with wine pairings giving Chef Bear, and hotel owner K... More About: Taste

The W5 Weekly Sniffs & Sips
2008-03-23 19:58:00 You may have noticed something new on the sidebar of this blog, "Through the Walla Walla Grape Vine - Wild Walla Walla Wine Woman." "The W5 Weekly Sniffs & Sips" - just a few short one-liners about up-and-coming news from around the Walla Walla Valley and also wine news from outside of the Valley that is of interest to the Walla Walla wine industry. These snippets may not be the full news, but often just a tasty amuse-bouche.I promise to do my best to "sniff" out the Walla Walla wine news, so that you can "sip" it in.
The Budo-Kun Wine Blog Black List Awards!
2008-03-22 06:10:00 So, I may be wearing a big "L" on my forehead because I was rejected from every category in the 2008 American Wine Blog Awards , but that's okay. It's tough trying to explain to the judges that there is such a town they loved so much they named it twice - - Walla Walla. And yes, Walla Walla makes wine! But what do you expect from California judges?(I'm kidding Tom. Smoochies.)In any event, I may be a loser when it comes to the AWBA, but I am a winner when it comes to the Budo-Kun Wine Blog Black List . I am an "Official Reject!" And I want to thank all of the little talking bottles and cheese wedges from Domaine547 who made it possible for me to accept this award. You love me! You really love me!
Four Wine Questions For: Paul Gregutt
2008-03-12 05:18:00 Through the Walla Walla Grape Vine will be celebrating its third year and I thought it was time to start a new blog feature. From time to time (hopefully once a month) you will see a new feature, “Four Wine Questions For” or in short, "4WQ4." Each “Four Wine Questions For” article will feature a four Q & A with a well-known person in the wine industry.I am very excited to introduce my first interview. Paul Gregutt is a familiar face who has been covering the Washington State wine industry since the mid-1980’s. He is the wine advisor for the Seattle Times newspaper as well as wine advisor for the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin and Yakima Herald. Paul is a contributing editor for The Wine Enthusiast and writes the Pacific Northwest section of Tom Stevenson's annual Wine Report. He is also the author of Northwest Wines: A Pocket Guide to the Wines of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. And most recently authored a new book, Washington Wines and Wineries: The Essential Guide. Eastern WA Meets Down Under WA
2008-03-11 04:10:00 Last year, wine writer Paul Gregutt toured Western Australia wine country and conceived the idea for WA to meet WA - a winemaker exchange between the Wine Industry Association of Western Australia (WA) and the Washington Wine Commission (WA). It will be the first ever region-to-region winemaker exchange program. Both areas of WA share more than the same acronym, as they are both cool-climate regions dominated by boutique producers making ultra-premium wines. Also, both regions make up less than four percent of their nation's wine production. Washington State and Western Australia are known to produce higher acidic and more refined wines. And like all countries in the southern hemisphere (south of the Equator) the seasons in Australia are opposite from ours. Australia's crush is in February/March and of course, ours is September/October. The time differences really makes for ideal circumstances for each winemaker.Virginie Bourgue, winemaker for Walla Walla's new Cadaretta Winery (... More About: Eastern
Spring Forward
2008-03-09 06:19:00 A small gift to celebrate the extra hours of sunlight - the trailer for the new movie, "Bottle Shock." Set in the 1970s, based on the story behind the birth of the Napa wine industry that culminates in the triumph of California wines over French wines at the 1976 Paris Tastings - also known as, like the story from Greek Mythology, The Judgement of Paris (and we aint talking Paris Hilton's day in court, either). Starring the ever crushworthy Bill Pullman (Sleepless in Seattle and While You Were Sleeping) who plays the California winery owner and Alan Rickman who plays...well...Alan Rickman and Harry Potter's Professor Snape. But Rickman's character is the British wine merchant who sets up the historical tasting and no matter what part Rickman plays, he is one of the best."Wine is sunlight, held together by water." - Galileo Galilei More About: Spring , Forward
Wine Blogging Wednesday #43
2008-03-06 03:30:00 Today's WBW theme was chosen by Joel Vincent of Wine Life Today and the theme is "Comfort Wines." Joel asked that we choose a wine, any wine that we love to unwind to and what makes the experience special and relaxing for us.I had to stop and think about it for a minute because there are so many wines that I love to relax with, but the one wine that kept coming back to me was Waterbrook Melange - - and why is that? I started to think back about the many times I sat down to a glass of Waterbrook Melange and most of the time there was family involved. Many a trip to Spokane with my sister to visit my "kidlets" for the weekend. The routine was this: once settled at my daughter's house on the South Hill, down the block we go to the local market and we hit the wine section. Usually the first wine we saw - - Waterbrook Melange and always at an affordable price. It's always like old home week for us when we see it out of town. It's like our security blanket. Later in the weekend we usu... More About: Blogging , Wednesday
Food & Wine Magazine - Terrific Washington State Reds
2008-03-04 16:49:00 The March issue of Food & Wine Magazine has an article named,Terrific Washington State Reds and following up with their Twenty Top Bottles. Senior Wine Editor, Ray Isle tasted a total of 105 red wines from Washington State. And in that total included Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, Syrahs and Blends. Obviously to choose only 20 wines was a difficult task and as the article states, "one of the most difficult selections he’s (Isle) ever had to make" And to quote Food & Wine, "Across the board, quality was remarkably high—a testimony to how exciting Washington state wines are right now." Duh - last year after Long Shadows of Walla Walla won Food & Wine award for Winery of the Year, Lettie Teague, Food & Wine’s executive wine editor said "...she has admired the incredible ambition of this project...to prove the potential of Washington wines." The potential? Ya think? Like I commented last time. Where've ya been Lettie? Washington's wines have long passed the "poten...
Pemco Profile #96 - Walla Walla Wine Wine Woman Woman
2008-03-03 00:38:00 At the beginning of their ad campaign, I wonder if Pemco Insurance knew there really was such person when they originally created Northwest Profile #96 - Walla Walla Wine Wine Woman Woman - for their radio and internet commercials, "...the only person who would pair a wine with an onion..." Next to Profile #76 - The Super-Long Coffee Orderer guy, the Walla Walla Wine Wine Woman Woman made me laugh so hard I was in tears!Even if my "character" wasn't in this ad, I would still think this is one of the most clever insurance ad campaigns I have seen in a long time (tired of lizards and cavemen), but the amusing thing is that the majority of these Northwest Profiles, I feel like I know! Especially the coffee order guy, socks and sandal guy, and 50 degrees shirt off guy. Anyways, I thank Pemco Insurance and their "Northwest Profiles - A Helpful Guide to the People of the Northwest" campaign for giving me a link and a good laugh. I am flattered. The ol' gray mare...
2008-03-02 22:23:00 You remember the words to the song. To sum it up - the brain still thinks young, but the body is having trouble keeping up. An example - it reads like a Mastercard commercial:Take one Friday evening;Over 20 bottles of wine (including a vertical of six with the recent vintage right from the barrel and also including two bottles of wine yet to be released) and somewhere in there was a bottle or two of Champagne; One large wheel of French raclette; Two raclette grills and all the fixin's;Two bottles of cognac;Toss in two French winemakers;Priceless - but one still pays a price come Saturday morning. 'bucks beans sure are noisy when they hit the grinder. More About: Mare , Gray
Renaissance Riesling
2008-02-27 16:35:00 In the late 70’s I remember drinking a lot of Riesling from Chateau Ste. Michelle. At the time, Riesling was “the” grape in Washington State. As the Washington wine industry grew, French red varietals took over and especially here in Walla Walla. In the late 90’s we saw the Riesling grape slowly find it’s way back with German winemaker, Dr. Ernst Loosen who partnered with Ste Michelle to produce, Eroica, which received many awards and accolades. And it was just a few years ago when another renowned winemaker from Germany, Armin Diel, arrived in Washington to partner with the Long Shadows Consortium and launch what would soon to be another Riesling, Poet’s Leap, which would also be well received by the wine critics.Almost a year ago in May, Steve and I went on a two day tour of the appellations in Washington State. Our gracious host was Gilles Nicault, general manager and winemaker for the Long Shadows Winery in Walla Walla. Of course, after two days we were overwhelmed, ... More About: Renaissance
Tertulia Cellars
2008-02-26 19:34:00 It’s a happy building. Rather prominent, with a surrounding view of the country side. The colors of the winery are distinguished, yet reminding me of Skittles candy. Like I said, "Happy." The building makes you want to go inside and see more color.Tertulia is a Spanish word meaning "a social gathering of friends." And the colors inside and out makes me think just that. The tasting room is "hip, cool and edgy," but oh so comfy. Christina Peet, sales and tasting room manager, is knowledgeable, friendly and very hospitable. When I visit with tasting room staff I always look at them like, "Now would I hire them to work for me?" And I wouldn’t hesitate to hire Christina. So - - how are the wines?Winemaker, Ryan Raber and I were classmates at the Center for Enology and Viticulture. Ryan was a serious and attentive student and there wasn’t a doubt he would graduate and enter the world of winemaking, producing some of the best wines around the valley. Me? Oscar Gift From The Wild Walla2 Wine Woman
2008-02-25 00:10:00 Yesterday was spent working. What a work day! I had meetings at wineries to taste wine. Yah - yah, it's a tough job, but... One of the many highlights was finding out about several exciting new releases planned for Spring Release, the first weekend of May. All I can say is - - "Wow!" Today is spent catching up on bookwork and some computer geek work (Qwest was down yesterday - the bastardos!). I hope some of the Oscar commercials are extra long so I can take a break to catch up the work. But in the mean time here is a little Oscar gift, a song from the soundtrack of the Oscar nominated movie, The Big Chill and so appropriate! Note: the video montage is pretty corny, but the music is pretty great More About: Wine , Wild , Gift , Woman
The New Generation of Wine Lovers - I love them!
2008-02-20 07:13:00 Last week I was reading recent articles about other wine regions; such as Napa, Sonoma and the Fingerlakes, having problems with drunken wine tourists in limousines. Some compare the behavior to "frat boy" and some readers of these articles left comments assuming it's the college students who behave this way and not the "Cabernet and Brie" crowd (their reference name).I'll tell ya, after spending a few years behind the tasting room bar, I have to defend the college students, especially the locals. I wish some of the "Cabernet and Brie" crowd would behave the way most college students behave when visiting area wineries. From my experience the college crowd are some of the more thoughtful and insightful visitors to pour for and visit with, and of course that is after we get the checking of ID (21 years+) formality out of the way. And interesting enough the Walla Walla Valley is the home to three colleges, Whitman College, Walla Walla University (both private colleges) and Walla Wall... Damn Those Grapes For Making Washington State Money! How Dare They!
2008-02-15 16:10:00 Beware - - she's on another rant. Run for cover!A few weeks ago I read a letter to the editor in the local paper. The writer was from Milton-Freewater, Oregon (which is 10 miles from Walla Walla, WA) and she was complaining, not only about the wineries in Walla Walla selling the heathen devil's juice, but also complaining about a new Harley-Davidson sales room that was going downtown Walla Walla. Yup, the last thing we need in Walla Walla is another winery contributing to our state/county/and city revenue, let alone encouraging the sorted bunch of ruffian outlaws like the local doctors, attorneys, bankers and funeral directors to buy another Harley-Davidson for their collection. How silly this person is. And my answer to her is: If she doesn’t like wine and Harley-Davidsons in Walla Walla, then stay in Oregon. As it is in Washington State , as a courtesy to our Oregon neighbors, we do not charge them sales tax on their purchased items. It is a courtesy depending on the retailer a... Wine Blogging Wednesday #42
2008-02-13 16:01:00 It's been several months since I have participated in WBW. The reason is many of the topics, I've had nothing to contribute. You see, I only write about Walla Walla wines and sometimes other wines from Washington State. This month, Andrew of Spittoon is the host. He has asked that we blog about an Italian red wine. Andrew also asks that we summarize and review the chosen wine in just seven words. Well, this month I am going to cheat - - just a little. How about if I blog about a red grape with Italian origins, but grown in Walla Walla? A Sangiovese from a Walla Walla winery with an Italian name? Come on! It was named after the winemaker's maternal grandmother who emigrated from Italy! Are you going to deny me a chance to blog about someone's beloved nonna? So, with that little tantrum behind me, here is my contribution to WBW#42. I am going to blog about Mannina Cellars Sangiovese - 2005. And here are my seven words to describe my choice: Gold medal winner. Pair it with tiramisu. More About: Wine , Blogging , Wednesday
Happy and Healthy Valentine - Red Wine and Chocolate!
2008-02-11 16:11:00 With Valentine ’s Day around the corner, my thoughts always think of chocolate. It’s no secret that I happen to love chocolate and red wine together. In the early years of my wine exploration I learned how to drink dry red wines accompanied with chocolate. A bite of chocolate from one hand and a drink of red wine from the other. And of course, I got hooked. In moderation, dark chocolate and red wine happens to be good for us, besides being delicious and decadent. Chocolate contains flavonoids, particularly potent antioxidants that possess an ability to clear free radicals and protect against inflammation, which helps in protecting your heart. Red wine contains an abundance of the antioxidant resveratrol, which assists in making our cells healthier. In the Valley we are fortunate to have Lan Wong and James Boulanger, who moved here from New York and opened a chocolatier boutique named Petits Noirs. Their chocolate creations are not only inspired by the fresh produce grown in the Va... More About: Wine , Happy , Healthy
The Many Wild Walla Walla Wine Women
2008-02-07 16:31:00 Yes, you read it right. Women - - plural. You will read how it takes a lot of Walla Walla women who like wine to make one Wild Walla Walla Wine Woman.A few years back when I was attending the viticulture/enology program, there were a few extra classes that took us out of the vineyards and cellars and into the classroom. One of those classes was Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management, taught by Debbie Frazier (Debbie and I were in Junior Club together many moons ago) The most interesting part of the class for me was Chapter 15 - E-commerce (in fact, to this day the text book is still on my desk with a blue Post-it Note marking the chapter). I loved this concept of retailing on the web. During those business classes, instructor/web designer Nanqi You visited our class showing us the importance of good web designs especially wine related. I stored all of this info in the back of my mind. I just knew I would need it some day.So once my wine blog took off I started getting emails...
Trust Cellars Riesling - 2006
2007-12-11 16:03:00 Last week Steve went to Trust Cellars to visit Steve - Steve Brooks at Trust Cellars, that is. What is there to say about Trust Cellars that hasn't already been noted? Well, let’s see - - everybody has pointed out that Brooks left his CNN job in Atlanta to come to Walla Walla to make wine. Okay, what else? He was a cellar rat at various wineries and in fact, even at the Long Shadows winery. Which leads me to - -Steve Brook’s Trust Cellar Riesling . Not sure what has been said about Trust Cellar Riesling, but here is where I can finally have my say. Steve bought a bottle from Steve for me to check out. The 2006 was the first vintage for the Trust Cellars Riesling and my-oh-my did that time for Steve Brooks of being a cellar rat at Long Shadows pay off. Trust Cellars Riesling was very reminiscent of the Poet’s Leap Riesling executed by Armin Diel, one the leading Riesling producers in Germany. Which means - - this is a good thing Martha! We decided to check out the new location o...
The 2007 Barrel Tasting Diaries - The PM
2007-12-07 16:33:00 We did the downtown scene in the morning and off we went up to the airport. The streets and paths up there were getting a bit slippery due to numerous rubber treads and feet. Our first visit for the afternoon was Dunham Cellars. There is no doubt that Dunham Cellars is a pro at these parties. There were definitely little signs they’ve done this gig before. We were tickled to see a young woman, bundled up and prepared for the elements, in a golf cart driving visitors from the slippery parking lot to the cellar’s door. Appreciative, but we declined the drive and skated our way to the door. Once inside the winery it was warm, cozy and decorated for the holidays. If Dunham’s holiday decor can’t get you in the holiday spirit, then you’re a lost cause.Steve was taken with Dunham's Morrocan lamb stew. No thanks, none for me. Lamb does not touch these lips. Baaa! We didn’t taste through all the wines, practicing moderation, but one wine that really stood out for me was the Trut... More About: Diaries , Diari , Barrel
The 2007 Barrel Tasting Diaries - The AM
2007-12-04 16:59:00 The 2007 Walla Walla Barrel Tasting event was the first for me as a visitor since I can’t remember when - maybe seven years ago? I've been stuck working in a tasting room! What a glorious event it was! The weekend started for us Friday evening at a wine club event. The snow gave the event that bit of ambiance that really made for a winter party. We kicked it into four-wheel and off we went! During the weekend I followed my own advise: we started our Saturday morning at home around the kitchen island revisiting the happenings and dialogue of the night before, pondering our list of wineries to visit, while I made pancakes and fried up slices of bacon. "Big breakfast." I tell everyone, "eat a big meal if you are going to taste a lot of wine." A girl has her priorities and the crush-worthy male French winemakers were at the top of this girl’s list. Gilles Nicault at Long Shadows Winery was the first stop Saturday morning. This isn’t the first time for Steve and me to visit Long S... More About: Diaries , Diari
San Francisco Chronicle - Top 100 Wines
2007-12-03 16:31:00 Yesterday, the San Francisco Chronicle picked their Top 100 Wines . It is what the Chron refers to as "Best of the West."I am happy to see that the Chron has at least recognized 12 wines from Washington State and out of the 12, five of them were from Walla Walla. Of course, this is my opinion, but I think it has been a difficult move on many of the merchants and wine writers out of Northern California to give much recognition to the great wines that are coming out of the State of Washington. But it isn't just my opinion - San Francisco-ite Alder Yarrow of Vineography pointed out the same in his blog of June 2007 with how ashamed he was with his city of San Francisco for not giving Washington wines the recognition they deserve. Overall, Washington and Oregon wines made up about 21% of the wine list. Okay. Not bad. Considering the list was put together by Jon Bonné, who use to work for MSNBC in Seattle and wrote the following in his former blog, Amuse-Bouche: "I’m rather sick of W...
