Our thoughts on Chow Noodle House
2007-06-21 05:57:00
I should preference this post with the following. I love pasta. Be it Asian noodles or traditional Italian pasta or anything else. Love it! I suspect this stems from two things. First, my mother is half Chinese. So I had lots of Chinese food growing up, home cooked and at restaurants. Indeed, my earliest restaurant recollection ...

Our thoughts on Cilantro Live
2007-06-13 15:05:00
I have twice now bribed my husband to accompany me to the new Cilantro Live in Hillcrest, no small feat given that he’s a carnivore’s carnivore and Cilantro Live is organic, vegan raw food. The fact that he has been more than once really says something. I had read about Cilantro Live’s Lemon ...

Pinkberry is coming to town!
2007-06-11 23:33:00
Just a couple of weeks ago while visiting my grandparents in L.A., I made my usual pilgrimage to Larchmont Blvd. for my Peet’s coffee and my Sam’s bagel (best ever bagels in my opinion) and to linger in the beauty supply store and at the newsstand. Well, every time I visit there is a new ...

For those that haven’t had the pleasure, Bravo has a chef competition reality show that is starting its third season on June 13.  This past Wednesday, the four finalists of Season 1 and Season 2 went up against each other for charity and to warm us up for Season 3.  It was fun to see ...

Our thoughts on Bite
2007-06-06 15:53:00
Bite’s owners describe it as a “Modern California Bistro and Wine Bar.”  Formerly of the late Cafe W, which we sadly never made it to,  Chef Chris Walsh has put together an excellent dining experience consisting of French and Italian inspired dishes.  Bitecompetes with the likes of the new Guild Restaurant + Bar in Barrio Logan.  The ...

Our thoughts on Brazil by the Hill
2007-06-01 01:44:00
I first learned about Brazil By the Hill when my esthetician, who is Brazilian, tipped me off. She told me that the food is authentic, simple, everyday Brazilian food. Since it’s about two seconds from home, we decided to try it right away. We have now been back a few times, and ...

The ?Secret Menu? at In-and-Out
2007-05-23 19:29:00
We recently made a freeway stop at In-and-Out Burgers.  We drove through and then ate in the car — just the way you are supposed to do it,  one of those Southern California experiences locals love.  In-and-Out burgers are hands down the best fast food (which excludes Rocky’s, Hodad’s and the Grill) burgers we have ever had.  ...

Our thoughts on Jack?s La Jolla
2007-05-17 15:30:00
Our dinner at Jack ’s La Jolla started when our dear friend and realtor, Darren, told us he wanted to take us to dinner to thank us for some business.  Darren said “anywhere you want to go, really, anywhere.”  What’s a foodie to do with an offer like that?  Go to one of our tried and ...

What?s going on in San Diego?s Kitchens
2007-05-15 18:40:00
Here is the latest buzz surrounding some of San Diego ’s top chefs… Michael Catalano has left the House of Blues. I’m not sure where he is heading, but will let you know where he ends up. Matt, who has been the Sous Chef at Paradise Grille for some time under Justin Hoehn, has left to join his ...

Dinner for lunch at Paradise Grille
2007-05-10 16:30:00
Brother Josh and I had lunch last week at the Para dise Grille. Josh and Shea had been there previously and really enjoyed it. Needing to add some North County locations to our reviews, I thought this would be a perfect place to meet for lunch. Paradise Grille is located in the Flower Hill Promenade off Via de ...

Ah, the French?
2007-05-10 00:24:00
In an Op-Ed Piece in today’s NY Times, Maureen Dowd had a lovely sentence about the French that I had to share: One expatriate friend of mine observed that the French are not lazy, they just want a leisurely lunch. The Op-Ed was mostly about the new French President, but this sentence just stood out to ...

More thoughts on Hodad?s
2007-05-02 18:32:00
Until three days ago, I was disgusted by meat thanks to Baby Cabrera (see post re Veggie Burgers). But then a couple Thursdays ago, something changed. Just as I was about to leave work for the day and Gil was expecting to be on his own for dinner as usual these days, I called home ...

The Cuban Sandwich?
2007-04-28 17:17:00
I was reading Naomi Wise’s review this week of Habana in La Mesa.  As our loyal readers know, we reviewed Miami Grille and commented on every Cuban restaurant in San Diego a few weeks back.  Not surprisingly, we agree with Naomi’s review although we probably liked Habana even less than she did.  That said, there was ...

Our thoughts on Veg-N-Out
2007-04-25 16:18:00
The first trimester of pregnancy came with lots of food aversions and red meat was one of them. A couple of weeks ago, I was in that lovely pregnant nauseous yet hungry place and nothing sounded good. But suddenly, I knew what I needed. A veggie burger. All of the goodness of a burger without ...

Our thoughts on The Guild Restaurant + Lounge
2007-04-18 17:23:00
With Krista still out of commission for new and exciting meals, my brother-in-law Josh graciously agreed to join me for lunch at The Guild Restaurant and Lounge last week. We have both been anxiously waiting to try this new addition to Barrio Logan (or East Downtown as they call it). When we pulled up to ...

Taco shops? Salsa Brava and El Cuervo
2007-04-11 15:25:00
Some of you may have noticed that Krista has been noticeably absent from posts for the last several weeks.  We are pleased to announce (and explain) that we are expecting our first child.  Krista is just getting through the first trimester which has sadly taken away my favorite dining companion due to “morning” sickness (the ...

Bud?s Louisiana Food Shoppe for Dinner
2007-04-04 15:39:00
Krista works downtown and we live in the Mission Hills area of San Diego. That means she sometimes picks something up on the way home. Often that means a trip to Saffron, but every once in a while (and it is becoming more common) we remember Bud’s Louisiana Food Shop pe is sort of on her way ...

Lunch at the Grant Grill
2007-03-29 15:39:00
When I first moved to San Diego and worked downtown, the Grant Grill was a place where the downtown establishment conducted business (in fact, some of the wiretaps in the Strippergate trial were recorded at the Grill). It had an older charm to it and was close to City Hall. As part of the U.S. Grant ...

San Diego Liquor Licenses, part II
2007-03-23 07:50:00
It appears the Chief of Police has seen the error of his ways and removed the Police Department’s objections to nearly 40 liquor licenses. This should speed up the issuance of licenses for new restaurants in the coming months. Check out the UT’s article on this reversal here.

Miami Grille and Cuban food in San Diego
2007-03-21 14:55:00
As some of you know, I am of Cuban descent — the Arroz con Pollo recipe in our Recipes We Dig section is my mom’s. Since moving to San Diego I have longed for a decent, home style Cuban restaurant. Many have opened in the 10 years I have lived here, but only one was ...
