Colbert Bashes Beerfest
2006-12-02 20:37:02 Stephen decided to take a cheap shot at Beer fest during his "The Word" segment. He was in the middle of doing a hysterical social commentary about the fact that people who purchased James Frey's "A Million Little Pieces" prior to learning that he had lied in the book are able to get a full refund from the publisher - something that Stephen calls rediculous. He mocks the buyers of the book by saying that they should be more careful when they purchase things. He used Beerfest as an example by stating that people were fooled into seeing the movie by watching the trailer.A very funny segment as always! More About: Ashes , Colbert , Fest , Bash
Beer Stocks - Web 2.0 Style
2006-12-02 20:37:02 For all those business folks who enjoy beer culture this is for you. Motley Fool Caps is a new website which leverages it's community to give stock ratings and advice. I took the liberty of searching for beer stocks and got Anheiser-Busch Companies Inc (BUD), Quilmes Industrial SA (LQU), Boston Beer Company (SAM), and Molson Coors Brewing Company (TAP). Only BUD and SAM had ratings so far; BUD was a 3 out of 5 stars and SAM was a 2 out of 5 stars. I think Motley Fool is really onto something here. They are using a Digg style ranking system for it's contributors whereas the ratings from those "players" whose portfolio performs best are weighted higher than those who perform poorly. This is a complete 180 from traditional stock rating systems. In the past only 1 person, the analyst, would rate a stock and everyone would believe it - now the community can decide. Head on over and check out the beer companies: Motley Fool Caps: Beer Tags. Cheers! More About: Stocks , Web 2 , Style , Stock

How to Brew Your Own Beer
2006-12-02 20:37:02 I know most of my loyal readers are beer geeks and probably already know how to brew their own beer but for those of you participating in Problogger.net's group writing project this is an opportunity to learn a new hobby and drink the benefits. The first thing that you will need to do is pick up a homebrewing kit. Take a look at the Homebrewing section on the right nav for some good options. The next thing that you will need are ingredients. You can find links to ingredients on the right nav as well. Now that you have all of you equipment and ingredients it is time to get brewing! These are instructions for an Extract Beer Kit which is great for beginners. Before you get started make sure to sanitize everything with one-step. THIS IS IMPORTANT! Brew ing: Take your crushed grains and place them in a muslin grain bag. Heat 1.5 gallons of good quality water in a brew kettle. Steep the grains in the water until the water starts steaming (about 170 degrees F). Take the kettle... More About: How To , Your

Beer Blog = Stupid???
2006-12-02 20:37:02 Look at this coment made by Judith Robertson of Salem, Oregon in the Opinion - StatesmanJournal.com: "Of all the subjects in the world to choose from, why on earth would you choose 'beer' for a blog? Are there really that many people who care about these stupid comments? It's hard for me to believe that this subject deserves so much space in a newspaper of your size, or any other, for that matter." Ah Judith, you have so much to learn about both beer and blogging. First and foremost beer is AWESOME! Ok, now that I have gotten that out of the way I can get the more important points. Blog ging is about freedom; freedom to express opinions about anything that you find interesting no matter what anyone else thinks. It is also about bringing together a community of people with the same interests no matter how popular those interests are in the "mainstream". I blog because I love to write and I love the topic that I am writing about and you don't like it, don't read it! Cheers!... More About: Beer , Stupid , Fakta , Doof

Harpoon Bohemian Pilsner - Hopmalt Beer Blog Review
2006-09-21 15:12:01 The Bohemian Pilsner is the second beer I have tried in the Harp oon 100 Barrel Series. The first was a Kellerbier Unfiltered Lager. Both of these brews were very light and crisp and easy to drink on a nice summer day. I figured that since the summer is almost over I would drink this Pilsner before the Oktoberfests start coming in (by the way I am drinking a Brooklyn Oktoberfest as I am writing this). The 100 Barrel Series is a really great way to put out a limited edition beer. The Bohemian Lager is session number 15, which I am assuming means it is the 15th beer in the collection. It was brewed by the President and co-founder of Harpoon, Dan Kenary. Stats: ABV: 4.7%IBU: 42OG: 12 Hopmalt Beer Blog Rating: 7.5 Overall a very light and crisp beer which went down really smooth in the summer heat. If you can still find one of these on the shelf anywhere I would suggest grabbing it and saving it for next spring, although I am sure it is not easy to get your hands on one of... But, like me, if you’re not one of the six million people expected to be in Munich, Germany, for the 173rd Oktoberfest, there is another option. Getting The Big Head is Good: Beer Foam Foments Flavor
2006-09-07 17:13:00 Getting the big head is good: Beer foam foments flavor: South Florida Sun-SentinelThis is a well written and concise article written by Barry Shlachter syndicated from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram quoting Jim Koch of Sam Adams, Grady Hull of Colorado's New Belgium, and Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head .Finally!!!! A good beer article about pouring beer in a "real" publication!!!! Rejoice fellow beer geeks as the Sun Sentinel spreads our message of how a nice frothy foam atop a beer in a pint glass is better than drinking straight from the bottle or, gasp, pouring with no head at all."A few years back, it was commonly thought to be sophisticated to pour beer from the bottle down the side of the glass to sharply minimize the head. Koch and Hull think this trend was partly consumer-driven, drinkers believing they were being cheated out of their full pour if the head was too tall. There could be another reason: Popular mega-brands such as Miller, Coors and Budweiser are highly carbonated, a... 'Name that beer' competition launched
2006-09-05 04:06:00 I absolutely love what is going on in the Bahamas right now. The Freeport News is reporting that Bahamian Brewery and Beverage Co. is offering a local the chance to name their first brew as well as the opportunity to win $3,000. There is absolutely no better way to endear yourself to your community as a brewer then to allow the people to have some sort of input as to what they want. Jimmy Sands, said "'We are looking to find a name for the beer that we will be brewing in Grand Bahama and I would like to invite the residents of Grand Bahama to help us come up with the names for our locally brewed beers,' Sands said on Friday. 'When we open our doors and sell that first bottle of beer, we want it to have a locally suggested name. After all, we are an all-Bahamian and Grand Bahamian Company. We would like to have a local competition to 'Name That beer!' and give the lucky winner who suggests the name $3,000. This is a Grand Bahama company and I want Grand Bahama to be a part of wh... Howard Stern All Request Weekend and Good Beer
2006-09-05 00:24:00 What a weekend! We traveled all the way to Syracuse with a quick detour in the Berkshires and then back down to the Island all to see Ween play at the New York State Fair and to stay overnight at the newly renovated Turningstone Casino in Oneida, NY. I would suggest that anyone within 3 hours should take a night to stay up at the Turningstone as I imagine it is rather similar to both Foxwoods and The Mohegan Sun which will sound familiar to most Tri-State area readers. Over the weekend we managed to drive over 700 miles all the while listening to The Howard Stern All Request Weekend on Sirius. It was the most entertaining radio I have ever heard even though, ironically enough, I had already heard a nice chunk of it already. Just hearing it all again completely uncensored made it sound so fresh and new again. We were laughing the entire car ride! While up in Central NY I figured that we should drink some local beer. Utica is home to one of the largest breweries in the country, Matts B... More About: Beer
TheCrocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, is dead.
2006-09-04 07:32:00 I know that this is not about beer but I drank a lot of beer in college while watching Steve Irwin cheat death many many times on the television and I am saddened to here that he has past away. It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest. I have personally swam with sting rays before and I cannot believe that a man like Irwin, who makes a living out of swimming with crocs, could not avoid his own demise. It is being reported that he was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary and that's when it occurred.Drink a beer for The Crocodile Hunter on Labors Day.Cheers!read more | digg story More About: Steve Irwin , Dead
The U.S. Open Beer Selection - Poll
2006-09-01 01:39:00 I have been on vacation this week hence the lack of new posts and updated beer news. I went to The U .S. Open last night for the first time this year. I go every year at least a few times and was once a ball boy - yes - I really was a ball boy back when I was 15 and 16. Anyway, the purpose of this post is not to tell you all about my previous employment but to rant a little about the lack of quality beer at America's largest tournament.Obviously Heineken is going to have the majority of the taps since they are the main beer sponsor and afterall that is what they are paying for but honestly can't we at least have 1 American beer to choose from? There are so many great beers out there brewed in America and not 1 is showcased for all the foreigners to enjoy. Remember this is not only a tennis tournament, it is a huge tourist attraction. People from all over the world come to this event every year. It wouldn't be such a bad idea for a craft brewer to try to get in the door to showcas... More About: Beer , Poll , Selec

Bluepoint Blueberry Ale - Hopmalt Beer Blog Review
2006-08-25 02:40:00 Bluepoint Blueberry Ale is a perfect compliment to any summer evening. As I commented in The Brew Lounge's post titled Choosing Beer : Trials and tribulations... I decided to bring this beer to a party where there were going to be some normal folk who don't like fancy brews. The Blueberry Ale went over really well, I would dare say it was a hit.Straight from the bottle: A delicious golden ale brewed with real blueberries and natural flavors added.Hopmalt Beer Blog Rating: 9Yep, a 9! Not only does this brew satisfy my need for flavor but it also gets thumbs up from the average Joe beer drinker, which in my book is most impressive. It's kinda like Jay-Z for all you hip-hoppers out there - he has street cred but is a commercial success at the same time. I can't believe I just used a Jay-Z reference in a beer review - lord help me.I don't usually do this but I would like to suggest that you all go check out Donovan's News & Brews' review of this beer - I like his style and I t... Double-Walled Beer Glasses
2006-08-24 23:08:00 Double-Walled Beer Glass es | Uncrate: "Here's a classic beer glass with a twist — it's insulated to keep your beer cold and the glass from sweating all over you. Like the insulated iced tea glasses from last year, these double-walled beer glasses ($75/set of 6) are made out of a material that's used to make scientific lab glass and are way stronger than traditional glassware."Honestly folks, is this really necessary? Samuel Adams - Pioneers In Public Relations
2006-08-23 03:56:00 As a student of public relations, you should understand that the profession has a history and a heritage. It has been shaped by men and women whose actions and ideas have made the difference. Following are notes about some of these figures important to an understanding of the development of public relations. (Prepared by R.D. Smith; updated Fall 2004)Public Relations , History: "SAMUEL ADAMS (right) orchestrated public relations for the Revolutionary War. He organized the Sons of Liberty, developed the symbol of the liberty tree, staged the Boston Tea Party, named the Boston Massacre, and developed a propaganda campaign which lasted for more than 20 years."He did all that and had time to brew a fine beer or ten - impressive!
