Hop-on disposable cellphone coming to Europe - mobile phone is cheap enough
2008-04-18 21:42:00
The Hop-on HOP1900 Graffiti phone that brought the convenience of disposable mobile phones to the US is apparently set to make a trip across the pond. Thanks to an initial test-order of 10,000 units, and unnamed distributor has made the commitment to bring the super-cheap, display-less Hop-on disposable cellphone to Europe . Of course, the Euro-version of ...

Altek GPS-enabled Digital Camera
2008-04-18 11:17:00
Fancy this - Altek has released a GPS-enabled digital camera that geotags photos for you automatically, allowing you to cross-reference this metadata with other mapping tools such as Google Maps, Google Earth, or Flickr's geotag-enabled galleries when you get home. Perfect for those who can't seem to remember where they have gone during the last vacation - I suppose this is more useful if one visits a natural forest reserve where signboards aren't exactly commonplace. Features of this GPS-enabled camera include an 8-megapixel resolution and a 3" touch screen display. No idea on when it will be released though. Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones

Sprint, Telus to get Curve 8830 with GPS
2008-03-21 19:33:00
Sprint and Telus look set to receive the upcoming BlackBerry Curve 8830 that will feature GPS navigation, accompanying the original GSM model in the process. Other than the addition of GPS functionality, word has it that RIM will also augment the current storage to 80MB so that you won't have to fill up your microSD memory card that fast. Other features include a 2 megapixel camera, while the Sprint version will see black navigation buttons make a debut. There is no word on pricing from Sprint, but Telus wants to sell the 8830 for $200 with a 3-year contract or $480 as a standalone handset. Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones

Paper Planes game head for Cell Phones
2008-03-21 19:29:00
Cell phones aren't exactly the best platform when it comes to mobile gaming, but at least they keep you occupied instead of staring at the passenger sitting opposite you during your everyday commute. Namco Bandai has just released Paper Planes for the cell phone platform, allowing one to build virtual paper planes over the cell phone and letting them fly in different scenarios containing various objectives. You will start from scratch with a basic design, whereby you will need to put all your engineering knowledge (or the lack of it) tweaking the weight and angle of the flaps, select the power and angle of throw you think would work best and fly them to achieve the set objective. Sounds like fun, and best of all is, you don't waste any paper and run the risk of getting paper cuts! Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones

The Asus M50 entertainment notebook will come in a couple of variants - the M50Sv-B1 model features an Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 1.2GHz processor and a HD DVD optical drive (what the?!) while the M50Sv-A1 has a T9300 2.5GHz processor and a standard DVD burner. Both of them will be powered graphically by the GeForce 9500M GS 512MB dedicated video card which packs more than a decent punch, while you get a 15.4" 1,440 x 900 display. 3GB RAM, a 250GB hard drive and Altec Lansing stereo speakers round off the list of features. Asus also allows you to replace the GeForce 9500M with the ATI Mobility Radeon HD3650 1GB video card if your budget provides. Both Windows Vista-powered models will retail from $1,499.99 upwards. Spectrum ZX Laptop
2008-03-21 18:19:00
This Frankenstein of a creation is actually the amalgamation between a Spectrum ZX and a Toshiba Libretto 110. The latter retains its processor, but both the lower case and keyboard has been replaced with ZX hardware. It is easy for the creator to create a passive adapter circuit to match things up since both machines employ the use of matrix style keyboards, albeit with different matrix layouts. Emirates allows Inflight Cell Phone Calls
2008-03-21 18:15:00
Emirates claims to be the first airline in the world to allow passengers to make authorized cell phone calls while in the air, with the Airbus A340 heading towards Casablanca from Dubai being the benefactor of such an honor. Passengers are allowed to make and receive not only phone calls but text messages the moment the aircraft touched the crucial cruising altitude. Emirates is thinking to retrofit other aircraft in their fleet with the interference-blocking AeroMobile system later this year , including adding BlackBerry and "other data services." I wonder how the roaming charges will work then. Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones

Madonna Releases Album on Cell Phones
2008-03-20 19:25:00
Madonna isn't out of the game yet despite her reaching the magical 50 mark where biological age is concerned. In fact, she is hip enough to keep up with the times, releasing her new album for cell phones one week earlier than the actual CD release. Each new song can be downloaded for 24 hours before it is replaced by the next track, with individual songs retailing for 99p. Needless to say, her hot new single "4 Minutes" can already be downloaded for 75p a pop. Unfortunately for Material Girl fans outside of Europe, they will have to wait a whole lot longer if they do not want to take the illegal route of obtaining her latest songs since Vodafone spans across a mere 10 European countries. ZJ268 Cell Phone from Hell
2008-03-20 12:47:00
One might think that the devil had a hand when it comes to the ZJ268 cell phone that claims to have a legendary 666 days of standby time. Now I would most certainly say that this is but a hoax - unless it is nuclear powered, of course. Rather, this handset has a 32,800mAh "super battery" running the proceedings, featuring a dual SIM, GSM900/DCS1800 support and a 3" display. Retailing for $128 a pop, I'm surprised it does not self-combust if you don't offer it a monthly animal sacrifice. Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones

Cell Phone Microscope
2008-03-20 04:59:00
We've seen cell phone telescopes in the past, but those certainly can't be used for medical purposes. This 60x cell phone microscope was designed by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley which provides an affordable and reliable method to diagnose patients in remote areas over the phone. Dubbed the Cell Scope, you get 5x magnification for diagnosing skin conditions and 60x which is powerful enough to magnify and diagnose malaria in a blood sample. Heck, you can also use it to count white blood cells in leukemia patients. The initial prototype was constructed from off-the-shelf components with a total cost of $75 thereabouts. Imagine snapping images using the CellScope and sending it via MMS to a medical lab a few hundred miles away. Hopefully a refined version can roll out soon. Subscription-based Zonbu Laptop Review
2008-02-15 03:01:00
PC Mag has taken the subscription-based Zonbu laptop for a spin, and here's what they have to say about it. Pros: $279 laptop. Gentoo Linux is solid. Unlike the Zonbu PC, the Zonbu Notebook actually has 60GB of local storage. Comes with 20 free software apps, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet. Cons: $15-per-month subscription plan is the catch. Root access is locked down. VIA parts can't handle HD clips and cause slow boot times. Would you pick it up? After all, $15 a month does add up to a fair sum after a couple of years, and considering the rather lacklustre graphical and processor performances, you might want to take some time to really think about it before making a purchase. Atlas Kinetic Cell Phone Concept
2008-02-14 10:16:00
Bringing a balance to both form and function is one of the greatest challenges any hardware designer can face, so thankfully we have concepts that allow one's imagination to go wild. The Atlas Kinetic cell phone concept is made out of aluminum and glass, where the central sapphire glass shows off the generating and charging unit. It is powered via kinetic energy just like those found in kinetic-powered watches. Unfortunately, this phone does not push the technological boundary as it comes with most basic of functions, presumably because the amount of power generated isn't enough to run all the other heavy multimedia stuff. At least there's no charger to lug around. Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones
