Optical Disc Drive In Cell Phone
2008-02-13 04:44:00 Will cell phones move away from flash-based memory cards in the future with the advent of an optical disc drive at MWC '08? I don't think so, as the latter can probably co-exist peacefully with the former. Spice from India has a handset that comes with an integrated optical disc drive, where each optical disc has enough space to store 2.5 hours of video (no idea on what format it is compressed in). To date, only 40 titles are available with the majority of them being Bollywood hits. Could this be the reincarnation of Sony's UMD? GPS-enabled Glove
2008-02-12 04:50:00 The Vie prototype is a glove that boasts single-handed control, working as an interface between you and your safety. It requires finger movements of up and down to operate it, while actions can be followed up on the e-ink screen depending on your prior movement. Miniature motors actually ensure some form of feedback so that you will be able to know whether you have touched a button or not. The Vie also functions just fine as a personal guide and trainer, making it an ideal companion for joggers. No worries about being caught in the rain with it since it is wind- and water-proof. Other than its GPS capability, the Vie can also send out SOS messages whenever you're knee deep in trouble. Can we now have a consumer-ready model please? UC Berkeley students to trial mobile phone based California traffic-monitor
2008-02-01 22:13:00 There’s nothing worse than getting getting out-of-sync traffic information. Your navigation system re-routes you to avoid the traffic “slowdown,” and it ends up taking longer than if you had just stayed on the highway. The problem is rooted in the current traffic monitoring system that is currently in use in California - home to some of the most horrific traffic pile-ups in the country. You see, traffic flow is detected using fixed-position traffic-sensors (either video-based or inductive-magnetics embedded in the ground) and can only provide reactive data. That is to say, you can only detect traffic flow through changes in average highway speeds. Well, a group of 100 students at UC Berkeley want to make traffic flow detection a more accurate endeavor. They plan to trial a new system, dubbed Mobile Century, in which vehicles will be fitted with GPS-equipped mobile phones to serve as mobile traffic sensors. The Nokia N95 will be the handset of choice as these stude... More About: Phone , Mobile Phone , Traffic
Monitor Traffic Conditions with Cellphones
2008-02-01 20:21:00 UC Berkeley students will participate in an experiment that uses cellphones to monitor road traffic. Many phones already have a GPS chip and it is clear that eventually all phones will have one. So the idea is to save the phone’s location every 3 seconds and send the information (wirelessly) to a server that will compute the bigger traffic picture. It’s a really cool idea. It’s cheaper than adding sensors, and it would allow a view of all road traffic conditions – not just the major routes equipped with sensors. Now there are privacy concerns, but it should be possible to do something that is voluntary and anonymous. Leica M8 Digital Camera
2008-02-01 13:48:00 Leica's M8 digital camera comes with both mechanical and digital components, and will soon be offered an update package - now how about that. You get a sapphire LCD display to go along with the M8, as well as a more silent shutter in exchange for 1,800 clams. The sapphire LCD display is basically scratchproof, unless you happen to have a diamond wrapped around your ring finger. This camera is basically good for a long time since you will be able to reserve update spots at their site, when they'll in turn inform you when to send in your camera. After being shipped to Germany and having new innards fixed along with an updated firmware, you will get a "brand new" camera with the added advantage of an extended 2-year warranty. The sapphire update package will open its doors this March. Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones More About: Digital Camera , Camera , Digital , Leica

Sigma DP1 Digital Camera
2008-02-01 08:53:00 Sigma will take advantage of the PMA '08 event by announcing the DP1 that will be out sometime this spring. The DP1 will offer a whopping 14-megapixel count, thanks to its Foveon sensor. It will also boast a new three-layer silicon technoloy that captures an RGB image in one pixel for individual portions instead of the normal three, resulting in a major lift to resolution and color response. Shutterbugs will be able to shooting in both X3F-formatted RAW and JPEG thanks to a nine-point autofocus system. It uses SD and SDHC as the storage medium of choice. Unfortunately, no pricing details has been released as at press time. Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones More About: Digital Camera , Camera , Sigma , Digital
GE X3 Digital Camera
2008-02-01 03:53:00 [PMA 2008] I guess you can tell from the above image that GE has failed to produce an image of its X3 digital camera, so one will just have to learn how to make do. This model stresses a whole lot on zoom, boasting a whopping 12x optical zoom and a 4.5x digital zoom for those who love capturing subjects from far away without having to make the effort to get closer. Judging by the X1 of yore, chances are the X3 ought to come in a somewhat familiar form factor. It eats up a quartet of AA batteries as this can be quite the performance camera for the budget conscious. Specifications are located below. 10.7 megapixels 12x optical zoom 2.7" LCD display Electronic Image Stabilizer Smile Detection Face Detection Up to ISO 3200 Red-Eye Removal Blink Detection Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones More About: Digital Camera , Camera , Digital
GE A735 Digital Camera
2008-02-01 03:52:00 [PMA 2008] GE has launched its A735 digital camera that shares basically the same genetic make up with the A835, although it has a lower megapixel count that stands at seven. I like the use of AA batteries inside digital cameras, although they tend to make the flash recharge time rather slow. Sounds as though the A735 is a good candidate for beginners and those who want a hassle free photography experience. 7 megapixels 3x optical zoom 2.5" LCD display Electronic Image Stabilizer Smile Detection Face Detection Up to ISO 1600 Red-Eye Removal Blink Detection Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones More About: Digital Camera , Camera , Digital
GE A835 Digital Camera
2008-02-01 03:50:00 [PMA 2008] Those who are thinking of picking up a digital camera for the first time might want to consider GE's A835 digital camera. With 8 megapixels of resolution packed into a 25mm body, it comes with enough barebones features to keep any point-and-shoot amateur happy. It does not use any built-in lithium batteries, but a couple of AA batteries instead. Guess it is time to stock up on all those rechargeable batteries, eh? 8 megapixels 3x optical zoom 2.5" LCD display Electronic Image Stabilizer Smile Detection Face Detection Up to ISO 1600 Red-Eye Removal Blink Detection Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones More About: Digital Camera , Camera , Digital
GE G3 Digital Camera
2008-02-01 03:49:00 [PMA 2008] The G3 digital camera from GE is pretty much the same as the G2, as it beats out the latter in terms of megapixel performance. Otherwise, everything else remains the same, so at 18mm thin and 10 megapixel resolution, this is as good as it gets from GE in this market segment. Check out the list of specifications below. 10 megapixels 4x optical zoom 2.7" LCD display Electronic Image Stabilizer Smile Detection Face Detection Up to ISO 1600 Red-Eye Removal Blink Detection Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones More About: Digital Camera , Camera , Digital
GE G2 Digital Camera
2008-02-01 03:47:00 [PMA 2008] GE has sent the G2 to the fat house, and here we are with an all-metal body digital camera that measures 18mm thin, making it one of the lightest and slimmest cameras in the market. I like the minimalist shutter located at the top left hand corner of the camera (when facing it from the back), as it lends a rather peaceful look to the whole device. I guess chicks who pick this up will probably start decorating the acres of free space with Swarovski crystals and the like... 8 megapixels 4x optical zoom 2.7" LCD display Electronic Image Stabilizer Smile Detection Face Detection Up to ISO 1600 Red-Eye Removal Blink Detection Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones More About: Digital Camera , Camera , Digital
Wireless Charging Cell Phones from MWg
2008-01-29 04:59:00 MWg has announced that they will be launching cell phones that feature wireless charging sometime this year, teaming up with Splashpower to introduce inductive charging to the masses. I guess cell phones of the future will adopt this method if it catches on, but in the meantime we still have to contend with a tangled mess of wires whenever we start packing our chargers on a long road trip. Hopefully MWg keeps to their world and release these wireless-power smart phones by the middle of the year. RIM BlackBerry 8110 Pearl headed to Rogers Wireless with GPS?
2008-01-29 04:04:00 Canadian BlackBerry-fans may just have reason to celebrate in the near future. We’re hearing that the GPS-toting RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8110 could be hitting Rogers Wireless ’s network in the near-term. As the GSM counterpart to the CDMA-based BlackBerry 8130 Pearl, the BlackBerry 8110 Pearl features an integrated GPS receiver. The updated GSM BlackBerry Pearl should be sporting the microSD card slot, revised keypad, 3.5 mm headphone jack, and the integrated GPS receiver that we’ve come to expect from the newer BlackBerry Pearls. Dark Blue seems to be the color of choice for the Rogers-flavor of the BlackBerry 8110 Pearl, and keep in mind that the $249.99 price-tag is dependent upon a data plan and a 3-year contract. LuvBook J131, Penryn-Powered 13.3-Inch Notebook
2008-01-29 00:56:00 This 13.3” laptop from LuvBook looks good and uses an Intel Penryn processor. It’s a recent model using a more advanced manufacturing process that gives it a better price-per-performance ratio and more consumer-friendly properties. Curiously, our friends from Aving mention 12GB of mass storage, so I can only assume that it’s a SSD (solid-state drive). NVIDIA 8800M GTX SLI for Laptops
2008-01-28 21:11:00 NVIDIA’s high-end SLI isn’t for desktops anymore: NVIDIA just announced that the GeForce 8800M GTX SLI would soon be available from a number of high-profile manufacturers like Dell (and Alienware). If you’re not familiar with SLI (Scalable Link Interface), it is a multi-GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) setup that practically doubles the graphics performance when two GPUs are working together to render a frame. Usually, multi-GPU configurations are big and hot, especially when using a high-performance chip, so this is an interesting development. Note that 3–Way SLI exists on desktop machines and take a look at the upcoming Hybrid-SLI as well – this is my personal favorite. Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones More About: Laptops
Supa S1200G GPS system
2008-01-28 18:37:00 Supa has a new GPS navigation system in town - the S1200G. This device can be hooked up to a special cradle that comes with its own SIM card as well as a separate rechargeable battery. The S1200G is powered by a Freescale MX21 266Mhz processor and Microsoft's Windows CE 5.0 operating system, bringing together a 4.3? touch screen display, the fabled SiRFStar III receiver, a 1300mAh Li-Polymer battery, and an SD memory card slot. No idea what the GSM cradle is meant for, but a missing microphone shows that the S1200G was not meant to make phone calls. There is also no word on whether Supa's S1200G will hit the US market - only time will be able to tell. Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones More About: System

Point-of-Care: the Physician?s Interactive Notebook
2008-01-28 13:00:00 [DEMO 08] This new application built on Adobe Air is an interesting health record solution. Acesis claims that their software is better tailored to the way physicians work and think, unlike existing health IT solutions. Point of care provides a secure and flexible data capture system with structured medical vocabularies for reporting and analysis. Physician s can easily create and modify templates and forms dynamically expand based on prior responses, helping physicians focus on appropriate lines of clinical inquiry. I would like to test it to see how intuitive the user interface is, even if I am not a doctor. The article will be updated with a link to the demonstration video in the next few days. Cell Phone Concept Goes Retro
2008-01-28 08:06:00 Fancy a cell phone concept that looks into the past? This is what designer Seungchan Lee came up with, calling it CulArt (pronounced as Cool Art). This handset comes with all the regular smartphone trappings, including a touch screen display, a camera of unknown megapixel value, wood paneling, Bluetooth connectivity and knobs to control the phone's most basic functions, all crammed into a slim physical design. Thin Sony Blu-Ray Drives for Laptops, Including MacBooks?
More articles from this author:2008-01-25 20:44:00 Sony has a smaller Blu-Ray optical module that can be used to produce thinner drives for laptops, including slot-loading drives, which raises the possibility of a Blu-Ray MacBook, especially given Steve Job’s comments about Blu-Ray during the recent MacWorld. The size reduction also comes with a price reduction – which was expected and very appreciated. Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones More About: Laptops , Sony 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 |
