T-Mobile loses $8.2 million in mobile phone robbery - warehouse burgled for
2008-01-22 19:41:00 Just how much is a warehouse full of mobile phones worth? Well, according to T-Mobile , their warehouse-filling stock of 36,000 handsets is worth $8.2 million. How does T-Mobile know this? Well, said warehouse was burgled recently and the robbers got away with 36,000 mobile phones - mostly of the T-Mobile exclusive Sidekick variety. On the upside, the IMEI numbers (a network-registration number) of the devices are known and T-Mobile is working with law enforcement to track down any offending IMEI numbers that hit T-Mobile’s network. T-Mobile is warning their dealers of any shady gray-market deals, and has sent out an email giving these retailers a heads-up on any deals that look too good to be true. “Wanted to let you all know that one of our warehouses was broken into over the weekend and some 36,000 phones were stolen (worth about 8.2 Million ). The most significant phones stolen were the Sidekick phones. Please make sure you inform the dealers who like to purchase gray ... More About: Phone , Mobile Phone

US experts urge research into cellphone effects on children
2008-01-19 21:47:00 We were pretty much on the money when we speculated that France’s move to warn its citizens about limiting cellphone use among youngsters would prompt other countries to do the same. Experts in the US are urging Yankee researchers to look into the possible effects of cellphone use on children and their development. Youngsters are more prone to any type of radiation because they’re still developing and growing. And it seems that some vague links between mobile phone use and brain tumors has prompted the The U.S. Food and Drug Administration to ask the National Research Council to recommend some future lines of study. The National Research Council advises Congress and other federal government agencies on what areas of science warrants more research. The convened a meeting of experts and has released a new report that indicates that more research needs to be done to determine the link between mobile phones and children. The Council stated that “measuring the amount of... More About: Children , Cellphone , Effects
Mio kinda mimics Samsung?s approach to phones - one side phone, other side
2008-01-19 13:02:00 You’ve probably already heard a number of stories that pure portable navigation devices (PND) are bound to die in the coming years. So it doesn’t surprises the leading PND manufacturers want to get into the handset market and release either its software for the popular smartphone platforms (something TomTom and Garmin already did) or even make their own GPS-equipped devices. That being said, Navigadget spotted the Mio’s upcoming GPS equipped phone at this year’s CES. Similarly to Samsung ’s approach with the UpStage (B’Phone ), the device pictured above has two faces. But unlike the UpStage which reserves one face for music and the other for phone, Mio’s device puts navigation instead of music. The end result is large screen navigation device that’s also the mobile phone. Cool approach, don’t you think? Finally, in case you’re wondering, we’ve no idea when the Mio GPS phone will be available nor which markets it will ta... More About: Phones , Kinda , Side

Michelin Exits the Consumer GPS Market
2008-01-18 22:16:00 If I say “Michelin ”, you think “Tires”, right? Well, that resumes why Michelin is exiting the consumer GPS Market . While you might think that this sector is technology-driven, it is not really - at least, not in the entry-level market. GPS devices have reached the point of being “good enough” and most people couldn’t care less about gimmicks like multimedia features. However, like any commodity, branding still plays a major role in selling the products (yes, just like soap) and Michelin never built a GPS brand that did resonate with consumers. I guess that the company thought that its foothold on the “auto’ market was good enough. It wasn’t. Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones More About: Consumer

Gateway paints notebooks in new colors
2008-01-17 17:58:00 Gateway will be making available new colors for its line of M-Series and T-Series notebooks, with Merlot, Silver and Arctic Bloom joining Garnet Red and Pacific Blue. While the M-Series will get Merlot and Silver, both M- and T-Series will pick up Arctic Bloom. It is interesting to note that Gateway won't be charging a dime more compared to the base notebooks for these new colors, so those who have held out for a more vibrant option will definitely be pleased with these new offerings from Gateway. Just make sure you have anywhere between $799.99 and $1,399.99 in your bank account before making a purchase. Acer also jumps onto Miniature Notebook Bandwagon
2008-01-17 09:39:00 Acer does not want to be left out of the miniature notebook bandwagon game with plans to unveil 8" and 9" notebooks before the second quarter of this year is over. Details will be extremely sparse, although we do know that the screens will be produced by AU Optronics - the same company that supplies screens to Asus. Word on the street has it that these new Acer offerings will be priced below existing Eee models, but I'm not too sure how they will stack up against the new range of Eee PCs. Acer to Launch Low-Cost Notebooks in the First Half of 2008
2008-01-17 02:59:00 Acer is going head to head with ASUS and its blockbuster Eee PC in the low-cost laptop space. Digitimes reports that Acer will get Wistron to manufacture these new notebooks. 8 and 9" LCD displays will come from AU Optronics. It is not known if Acer will design the notebook or if Wistron will do the job for them. I don’t see how Acer will beat Asus in cost or design, given that Asus has more control over it and a good design team, but we’ll know soon enough. This move confirms the fact that good design, small size and low-cost is the “new cool” these days. Soyntech WiFi-finder laptop bag
2008-01-16 12:09:00 With WiFi hotspots getting common all over the place, having a WiFi-finder laptop bag pretty much makes sense. It is capable of hunting down a signal wherever you are, showing you all the wireless connections available through a "slideshow" function without having you to turn on the laptop. They retail between 35€ to 70€, depending on the type of style which suits you better. While the WiFi Detector Shirt is way cooler than the laptop bag, I must say that the latter is far more practical. It would be better to see solar panels attached to this in order to make this a truly must-have purchase for executives and laptop-toting folks everywhere. Belinea s.book 1 mini-notebook
2008-01-16 05:56:00 OK, so the MacBook Air sounds pretty light, but here we have the Belinea s.book 1 from VIA Technologies and Maxdata that tips the scales at less than 1 kg. Released for the German market, it will be far from powerful compared to the MacBook Air, but the specifications sure sound ideal for day-to-day use such as checking email, Web browsing and playing Web-based games. Powered by a 1.2GHz VIA C7-M ULV processor, the Belinea s.book 1 is now available at qualified specialist dealers in Germany. They certainly look good for use in events such as CES where walking with a less compact laptop is a killer on one's back. According to Slashgear, the Belinea s.book 1 would retail in the region of $1,200. Windows Mobile 6.0 Standard SDK refresh reveals GPSID Configuration Utility
2008-01-11 19:56:00 Now that Motorola Q9h and Samsung Blackjack II owners are able to unlock their GPS receivers to work outside of TeleNav, Paul over at MoDaCo has come up with another handy way to make better use of your Windows Mobile 6.0 Standard smartphone’s GPS hardware. The latest refresh to the Windows Mobile 6.0 Standard SDK has revealed a handy little utility to configure the GPS receiver’s communications ports. Paul found the utility in the “Tools” directory of the SDK, and in the name of saving you a 200MB SDK download, he’s packaged the GPSID Configuration Utility into a convenient little CAB file. Download the CAB file directly to your smartphone for installation. Cell Phones Slow Traffic
2008-01-09 22:57:00 A recent study found that motorists on cell phones have a tendency to slow down traffic. Panasonic Lumix wireless digital camera to upload photos to Google?s Picasa
2008-01-08 13:03:00 This isn’t exactly the “pure” mobile phones news, but since the big carrier is involved, we’re publishing it nevertheless. Panasonic has teamed up with T-Mobile for its new wireless digital camera called Lumix. The idea is to allow users to upload photos directly from the camera to Google ’s Picasa service using T-Mobile HotSpot service. We like how it sounds, as with this kind of camera you won’t have to worry about the lack of space on the memory card — simply upload photos to Picasa, delete them, and voila… more space is available for new photos. And best of all, once released — and we don’t know the release date nor price — the Lumix will come bundled with T-Mobile HotSpot service subscription for 12 months. Nice! PRESS RELEASE - Panasonic, the leading brand by which Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. is best known, today highlighted the development of a LUMIX digital camera with wireless network connectivity... SONY Nav-U series: the elegant GPS with dual view
2008-01-08 12:29:00 [CES 2008] Sony unveiled its new Nav-U line (models NV-U73T and NV-U83T) last Sunday during the CES press conference. We had the opportunity to take a closer look at it today and we liked it: the sleek and elegant design is backed up by interesting technical features like the dual view (see photo). Users can see a location in details, which is useful when you remember a place only by the surrounding point of interests. When the GPS signal is weak the POSITION Plus feature provides a more accurate estimation of the positioning. It includes a pressure sensor, gyro sensor and an acceleration sensor (most competitors do not have these sensors to help the position estimation)We did not take the Nav-U for a ride, so we do not know how it feels in the real world. Available in early spring, pre-orders are now being accepted at www.sonystyle.com/navu Pricing: NV-U73T $350 and NV-U83T $500 Features in the full post Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones More About: Series , View , Elegant , Dual

Toshiba Satellite U305 Thin and Light Notebook
2008-01-07 17:00:00 [CES 2008] The Toshiba Satellite U305 offers a good compromise between (relative) performance and price. It has a weight and feature set that would make it comparable with variants of the Sony Vaio SZ. However, the Satellite U305 sells for a much lower price (about $500 less for a comparable configuration). The Vaio SZ still has two advantages: it looks better and it has a better graphics processor. Now, is it worth $500 to you? At least, that makes me think a lot harder. Panasonic?s Link to Cell connects your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone to co
2008-01-07 10:12:00 At least in the Western hemisphere (outside Japan), Panasonic is not that known as a mobile phone manufacturer. They are better known for their in-home cordless phones — hey, I got one of those. That’s certainly a capital the Japanese electronics maker wants to leverage. That being said, they’ve announced their advanced Link to Cell KX-TH1211, a mobile phone accessory that connects a Bluetooth enabled mobile phone to cordless handsets in the home. The idea is not only to preserve the mobile phone’s battery life, but also to provide users with better reception to move throughout the home. And while I don’t see much of a point here — I’m home and I can recharge my mobile phone whenever I want — I’m sure there are some folks who disagree with me, and that’s fine. They would be pleased to know that the KX-TH1211 also offers simple service registration and supports up to two mobile phone numbers, meaning multiple people in the ... Anyways, the Notebook Cooler is unique in a sense as you do not have to cramp your style as long as your notebook is within the 14" to 17" size range. This is made possible thanks to extendable and retractable arms found on the Notebook Cooler. The GA-6216 (without hub) and GA-6298 (with hub) will retail for $34.99 and $49.99 respectively.
