Cell Phone Reception Bars Are Meaningless
2008-01-14 20:40:00
If you’ve ever had a “full strength” signal but couldn’t complete a call, you may have wondered just how great the cell phone reception bars really were. You are not alone. What do the bars mean after all? The biggest reason why the signal strength isn’t very helpful for GSM is what’s known as ...

Windows Mobile 6.0 Standard SDK refresh reveals GPSID Configuration Utility
2008-01-11 19:56:00
Now that Motorola Q9h and Samsung Blackjack II owners are able to unlock their GPS receivers to work outside of TeleNav, Paul over at MoDaCo has come up with another handy way to make better use of your Windows Mobile 6.0 Standard smartphone’s GPS hardware. The latest refresh to the Windows Mobile 6.0 Standard SDK has revealed a handy little utility to configure the GPS receiver’s communications ports. Paul found the utility in the “Tools” directory of the SDK, and in the name of saving you a 200MB SDK download, he’s packaged the GPSID Configuration Utility into a convenient little CAB file. Download the CAB file directly to your smartphone for installation. Cell Phones Slow Traffic
2008-01-09 22:57:00
A recent study found that motorists on cell phones have a tendency to slow down traffic. Motorists yakking away, even with handsfree devices, crawl about 2 mph slower on commuter-clogged roads than people not on the phone, and they just don’t keep up with the flow of traffic, said study author David Strayer, a psychology ...

Panasonic Lumix wireless digital camera to upload photos to Google?s Picasa
2008-01-08 13:03:00
This isn’t exactly the “pure” mobile phones news, but since the big carrier is involved, we’re publishing it nevertheless. Panasonic has teamed up with T-Mobile for its new wireless digital camera called Lumix. The idea is to allow users to upload photos directly from the camera to Google ’s Picasa service using T-Mobile HotSpot service. We like how it sounds, as with this kind of camera you won’t have to worry about the lack of space on the memory card — simply upload photos to Picasa, delete them, and voila… more space is available for new photos. And best of all, once released — and we don’t know the release date nor price — the Lumix will come bundled with T-Mobile HotSpot service subscription for 12 months. Nice! PRESS RELEASE - Panasonic, the leading brand by which Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. is best known, today highlighted the development of a LUMIX digital camera with wireless network connectivity...

SONY Nav-U series: the elegant GPS with dual view
2008-01-08 12:29:00
[CES 2008] Sony unveiled its new Nav-U line (models NV-U73T and NV-U83T) last Sunday during the CES press conference. We had the opportunity to take a closer look at it today and we liked it: the sleek and elegant design is backed up by interesting technical features like the dual view (see photo). Users can see a location in details, which is useful when you remember a place only by the surrounding point of interests. When the GPS signal is weak the POSITION Plus feature provides a more accurate estimation of the positioning. It includes a pressure sensor, gyro sensor and an acceleration sensor (most competitors do not have these sensors to help the position estimation)We did not take the Nav-U for a ride, so we do not know how it feels in the real world. Available in early spring, pre-orders are now being accepted at www.sonystyle.com/navu Pricing: NV-U73T $350 and NV-U83T $500 Features in the full post Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones

Toshiba Satellite U305 Thin and Light Notebook
2008-01-07 17:00:00
[CES 2008] The Toshiba Satellite U305 offers a good compromise between (relative) performance and price. It has a weight and feature set that would make it comparable with variants of the Sony Vaio SZ. However, the Satellite U305 sells for a much lower price (about $500 less for a comparable configuration). The Vaio SZ still has two advantages: it looks better and it has a better graphics processor. Now, is it worth $500 to you? At least, that makes me think a lot harder. Panasonic?s Link to Cell connects your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone to co
2008-01-07 10:12:00
At least in the Western hemisphere (outside Japan), Panasonic is not that known as a mobile phone manufacturer. They are better known for their in-home cordless phones — hey, I got one of those. That’s certainly a capital the Japanese electronics maker wants to leverage. That being said, they’ve announced their advanced Link to Cell KX-TH1211, a mobile phone accessory that connects a Bluetooth enabled mobile phone to cordless handsets in the home. The idea is not only to preserve the mobile phone’s battery life, but also to provide users with better reception to move throughout the home. And while I don’t see much of a point here — I’m home and I can recharge my mobile phone whenever I want — I’m sure there are some folks who disagree with me, and that’s fine. They would be pleased to know that the KX-TH1211 also offers simple service registration and supports up to two mobile phone numbers, meaning multiple people in the ...

Swissgear Notebook Cooler
2008-01-07 08:58:00
[CES 2008] Swissgear has rolled out a spanking new Notebook Cooler that comes with an optional built-in USB hub - needless to say, should you opt for that function, you will have to fork out a little bit more. Anyways, the Notebook Cooler is unique in a sense as you do not have to cramp your style as long as your notebook is within the 14" to 17" size range. This is made possible thanks to extendable and retractable arms found on the Notebook Cooler. The GA-6216 (without hub) and GA-6298 (with hub) will retail for $34.99 and $49.99 respectively. They're now available in either black or white colors. Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones

Guide to U.S. cellphone usage laws
2008-01-04 07:57:00
Here’s something for those of you travelling around the States these days. Although we’re sure you know you shouldn’t use your mobile phone and/or other gadgets like MP3 players while driving, sometimes you just gotta answer that call or check the new message. And while it’s suggested to use some sort of Bluetooth headset or carkit, not all people have one. That being said, it’s good to know where — in which U.S. state — you’re allowed to use a mobile phone while driving, and where that’s strictly banned. Thanks to Jalopnik, we have this great map picture above, which shortly illustrates cell phone usage laws across the States. Full document is available from here. HP Pavilion HDX 20.1-inch Notebook
2008-01-03 06:00:00
[CES 2008] We would rather call it a desktop replacement: with its 20.1” display, the HP Pavilion HDX is impressive at first sight. Playing with it, we liked a few things in particular: Display: the dual hinge provides better ergonomics. The screen can be higher and closer than on a typical notebook. Sound Quality: the sound was amazingly good… I was going to say “for a laptop”. Amazing for a laptop, but, absolutely good. Of course, you are not expected to move this notebook too often, but for someone who wants the power of a desktop and the integration of a notebook, this is a serious option. Liquid Image Digital Underwater Camera
2008-01-01 04:26:00
The Liquid Image Digital Underwater Camera is one for those who are curious about underwater photography and yet don't want to splurge a whole wad of cash on all the necessary equipment. Retailing for $100 a pop, this device allows the user to record still images as well as video while you swim around, thanks to the 5 megapixel/3 megapixel (depending on your choice) camera located right smack above your goggles. The goggles lenses come with crosshairs that help you focus your underwater shots, using microSD memory cards as well as USB flash drives for extended storage. I would presume that these comes with some sort of waterproof compartment, since microSD memory cards and USB flash drives aren't exactly too friendly with water. The Liquid Image Digital Underwater Camera is powered by a couple of AAA batteries. Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones
The Sharper Image sells cellphones - the world laughs
2007-12-31 19:46:00
Not that we don’t love the random doo-hickeys that The Sharper Image stores and catalogues try to sell us - ionic air purifiers, chair massagers, and alarm clocks are cool and all, but they don’t exactly hit the top of our “must-have” gadget-list. Still, TSI does very well for themselves by convincing a lot of people that the ionic air purifier is a $400 necessity for any truly “modern” home. And, as such, the crap-boutique has started to offer, of all things, mobile phones. These Chinese-sourced, generic handsets range from barely acceptable to downright nasty - with three out of four handsets proudly showing off their “The Sharper Image ” branding. First up, we have the AMOI N810 Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional smartphone. The AMOI N810 is the most powerful handset in TSI’s lineup, and boasts a 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, touchscreen (it’s a “Professional” WinMo device, after all), and an integrated GPS rec...

Ferrari Motorola Z8 cellphone
2007-12-28 07:46:00
Motorola aims to make its Z8 cellphone all the more exclusive by teaming up with Ferrari , the most successful Formula 1 team to date. I wonder if the Italian automaker ever pondered over how they have let their brand name appear on more and more tech these days and the impact it will have in diluting the exclusiveness of such a pedigree. Guess the Z8 is the latest in a line of gadgets to come after Acer's Ferrari notebook that boasts the famous prancing horse logo on it. This limited edition handset will come in the normal black and red color scheme, and shares the same specifications as a standard Z8 save for goodies such as free Ferrari videos, custom wallpapers and ringtones, and online magazine subscriptions that you don't need. No word on pricing, but the Ferrari Motorola Z8 will hit stores in Q1 next year. Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones

LG eXPRESs S900 notebook
2007-12-28 07:42:00
LG's new eXPRESs S900 notebook blurs the line between a notebook and a desktop, boasting a massive 19" monitor with desktop computer components housed within. Frequent travelers who want something light and portable will probably have to forget about lugging this monster around as it is bound to result in sore shoulders after a while. Features include a 3.5" hard drive (250GB to 320GB capacities), an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, Windows Vista, 2GB RAM, NVIDIA's GeForce 8600 GT video card, a DVD Super Multi Drive, WiFi and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, a 1.3 megapixel camera and a handy multi-card reader. Unfortunately, the LG eXPRESs S900 notebook has a miserly battery life of just 30 minutes. If you're still bent on picking one up, it retails between $1,300 and $1,750. Vodafone UK customer charges up ridiculous cellphone bill
2007-12-27 19:31:00
Here we go again with the ridiculous mobile phone charges. This one comes from the UK. The Mirror reports that Vodafone customer Ian Simpson apparently started using his mobile phone as a wireless modem, after realizing that his Vodafone handset could be tethered to his computer for faster download speeds. Well, Mr. Simpsons started downloading TV shows and music albums over his mobile phone’s data connection. After something like 20-30 TV shows and four albums, Vodafone pulled the plug on Ian’s mobile data connection. Now, here’s the kicker. Ian called up Vodafone to question why his £7.50 data plan had been cut off. Vodafone informed Mr. Simpson that he had charged up £27,322 (!) in mostly data-related charges. It seems his data plan wasn’t unlimited, as he had assumed (where have we heard that before?). Vodafone said that they limit this particular data package to 120MB per month, and Mr. Simpson’s data usage legitimately exceeded that limit. Here&#...

2008 sees 12-inch notebook touchscreens
2007-12-27 18:22:00
Looks like the second half of next year will see 12" notebooks come with touchscreen displays that are virtually indistinguishable from their view-only counterparts. AU Optronics is tipped to be working on a 12.1" LCD display that uses in-cell touch input, doing away with the need for a separate layer in order to sense contact from the user. This new techniuqe makes way for displays that are as slim as standard LCDs found these days compared to the bulky ones used in existing tablet PCs. Mass production ought to begin in the middle of next year onwards. Could the tablet PC range of devices experience a revival next year? Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones

MSI positive on notebook shipments
2007-12-27 13:10:00
MSI is extremely confident that its notebook shipments for next year will see an impressive 100% growth while maintaining gross margins for its own-brand notebooks that are currently more than 15%. MSI's notebooks currently reside in the top five spot in Turkey and Ukraine, with strong performance figures emanating from Asia Pacific as well as Taiwan markets. With that in mind, one can expect the company to further push their products all over the world in order to achieve that ambitious figure. How many people do you know rock to a MSI notebook?
