Partfoundry confirmed to be making GPS module for iPhone
2007-12-15 07:04:00
With the TomTom GPS iPhone module’s future in serious doubt, it seemed like the beautifully huge multi-touch screen in the iPhone would never see its full glory as a GPS receiver. Lo and behold, partfoundry has taken up the task of bringing a legit iPhone GPS plug-in module to market. We’re hearing that a February 2008 launch in in the cards - just in time for the iPhone SDK. The partfoundry GPS module is set to deliver 16 channels of satellite positioning and will work with any GPS navigational software that you choose. Of course, this means that partfoundry will be looking to third-party iPhone software developers to bring a workable GPS navigation application to market - but with a healthy dev-community already in place and the SDK slated to come out soon, we’re not worried about that part. What we are worried about is that hideous looking module you see above. A nice sleek cover is a must for anyone outside the geek-chic crowd. Partfoundry is taking pre-order f...

Viliv X7 GPS navigation system
2007-12-14 19:25:00
Koreans have yet another GPS navigation system to choose from - the Viliv X7. Not only does it tell you where you are and how to get to where you're going, the X7 features a DMB receiver that allows users to watch digitally broadcast channels. 3D graphics are also supported, making map reading much easier for those who can't for the life of them interpret 2D images. The X7 comes with a 7" touchscreen display at 800 x 480 resolution and is powered by a 600MHz AU1240 processor. The Viliv V7 has been slapped with a $540 price tag, providing 4GB of storage real estate, a standard DVD/DivX port, karaoke capability, multimedia playback and compatibility with a rear view camera. Fat chance of seeing this being exported out of Korea. Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones

Cellphone Holder
2007-12-14 19:22:00
While this has been dubbed the Cellphone Holder, it is certainly capable of doing more than that. This piece of plastic helps you charge your phone while preventing it from getting stepped on should you leave your handset on the floor. I'm not sure how many people actually do that though, but by the looks of it, will you accidentally snag the charger wire and drag your cellphone onto the floor? The answer depends on the individual I guess, and the Cellphone Holder certainly looks capable of housing other devices like PDAs and iPods as well. If only there was some sort of fence built in to prevent accidental drops. The Cellphone Holder retails for $7.95. Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones

Apple job description mentions digital cameras and remote controls
2007-12-13 18:38:00
Recently, Apple 's new job posting revealed a big deal about what Cupertino has up their sleeves in the near future. Among the vacancies available include software engineers who are required to further develop its multi-touch technology that will be used in future iPhones in addition to digital cameras and remote controls. This posting for the Human Interface Design group has no mention on individual projects despite being oriented more towards "new technologies", actively encouraging the employee to come up with an Eureka! moment that will hopefully result in new patents. TomTom GPS module for the iPhone?
2007-12-13 08:55:00
With MacWorld a little over a month away, rumors abound on new stuff that will be unveiled then. One of these include a TomTom GPS module that targets the iPhone. Take a gander at this photographic "evidence" - it is a fake if you ask me. Just check out the jaggies present on the screen while the rest of the iPhone looks perfectly normal. How many of you would like to see a GPS function appear on the iPhone? Methinks the battery in the next iPhone ought to be augmented further if such new features were to be made available then. TomTom developing GPS module for iPhone?
2007-12-13 01:45:00
We can’t tell you how much we love grainy spy-shots and questionable rumors. Like this one, for example. The image you see to the right shows what looks to be a TomTom-made GPS module plugged in to the bottom of an iPhone, with GPS navigation prompts displayed on the screen. With the iPhone SDK slated for a February release and widely rumored to already be available to a select few developers, it’s entirely feasible that TomTom has been “tap-tapped” to bring GPS functionality to the iPhone by way of an official “Made for iPhone” accessory. On the flip-side, we’ve seen many a rumor come and go - which is to say, completely fail to materialize. For what it’s worth, we don’t see any reason why Apple wouldn’t want to offer GPS navigation on the iPhone, and TomTom would be a logical choice for Apple. That is, it would be a perfect stop-gap until the 3G iPhone with GPS launches - right? [Via: Engadget Mobile] ---Related Articles ...

Seiko 905i handsets get A-GPS tech
2007-12-12 16:18:00
NTT DoCoMo will be throwing in assisted global positioning system (A-GPS) technology from Epson into all eight 905i series cellphones. This initiative will see Epson's GPS modules being used, employing Epson's advanced original GPS technology that boast a broad detection range capable of identifying signals ranging from strong outdoor signals to weak indoor signals. This high level of sensitivity has been touted to be several dozen times greater than those found in standard GPS technology, and that's to say a whole lot. In addition, Epson's module supports the three 3GPP-compliant positioning modes (MS-Based, MS-Assisted, and Autonomous), enabling the handset to deliver GPS positioning performance in any application and under any network environment. Magellan 3100 GPS system hacked
2007-12-12 16:12:00
If you love hands-on experiences, ever thought about hacking your GPS navigation system? Somebody has done that with his Magel lan 3100 GPS system, but don't expect too much from this sophomore effort. Other than the ability to change your splash screen (perfect for those who are so used to having custom screens for their cellphones), you also get a file manager as well as the ability to increase your points of interests. Just in case you want to keep yourself entertained on the go and spent all your money on the Magellan 3100 with not a single dime left over to pick up the iPod, this hack also includes a basic media player. Brits shun GPS units
2007-12-12 11:11:00
Many small communities in England are starting to shun GPS systems since those devices are responsible for an influx of large vehicles that aren't too friendly on roads which were originally designed for horses and carts. In addition, fences around the country are getting scraped against by car mirrors no thanks to the GPS device providing a so-called "shorter route" through towns which are too small for sidewalks. Villagers aren't taking all these lying down though - they have started to work with GPS manufacturers to install signs on roads, clearly stating that those roads aren't appropriate for trucks. I guess smart technology has resulted in dumbed down folks, since we seem pretty happy to let the machines do all the thinking (and work) for us these days. Sagem my220x cellphone goes gold
2007-12-11 08:28:00
Sagem has decided to drape its my220x cellphone in gold, and at first glance this handset looks pretty much like the Sagem my150x. Feature-wise, it isn't all that impressive, carrying a 65k color LCD display, a speakerphone, 180 minutes of talk time and 240 hours of standby time. There is no mention of a camera or MP3 playback, but I suspect having the latter inside is more of a possibility than the former. There is no word on the price of this 10mm thin handset. ASUS U6 luxury notebooks
2007-12-11 08:22:00
ASUS has has just rolled out its line of U6 luxury notebooks in the US, where you get the U6E and U6S which come in white and brown colors respectively. They boast glossy exteriors that are bound to pick up fingerprints like how a stray dog attracts fleas, while the insides ooze with luxury such as leather-covered palmrests and status-light bars designed in decorative metal. Measuring 12.1" in size, you get HDMI ports, LED backlights, an 8-in-1 memory card reader as well as a Super Multi DVD drive in each notebook. The U6 is adequately powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz processor, 2GB RAM and 160GB hard drive - enough for everyday use, although you can forget about using this as your primary gaming rig. The inclusion of fingerprint scanners is brilliant as it notches up data security by an extra mile. No word on pricing or availability as at press time. Permalink | Comment | Uberbargain | Uberphones

Omron rolls out Hawk-WMX for notebooks
2007-12-10 16:29:00
The Hawk -WMX device from Omron targets notebook users, making it the first global WiMAX antenna for notebooks in the world. Measuring a mere 30mm x 6.6mm, don't be fooled by its small size as claims it is more than capable of delivering uniform RF performance across all three global WiMAX bands - 2.3-2.8 GHz, 3.3-3.8 GHz and 5.25-5.85 GHz. Since the Hawk-WMX is WiMAX MIMO compliant, it can also double up as a WiFi (IEEE 802.11n) MIMO antenna courtesy of its global band attributes. There is no word on pricing and availability as at press time, but it looks like folks who don't work in the office as tradition dictates will find that getting connected is easier than ever before. Jeep GPS RT300 device
2007-12-10 06:10:00
Isn't Jeep suppose to, you know, stick to making jeeps? I am sorely mistaken however with the company planning to roll out the Jeep GPS RT300 navigation system that shares the same qualities as a Jeep vehicle, including durability, reliability, ruggedness and style. Features include a 3.5? touchscreen display, one million points of interests, an integrated audio player, a video player and e-book functionality. All these in exchange for 300 clams. The Jeep GPS RT300 is tipped to be released in January next year. It would be nice if this GPS system was dirt-, shock- and/or water-resistant in order to live up to its namesake, but that would drive up the final price as well. AT&T brings iPhone, other handsets to former Cellular One markets - Alaska
2007-12-09 02:29:00
They sure didn’t waste any time in putting their newly acquired markets to good use. Having just taken over all of Dobson Communications’ infrastructure and licenses, is bringing the iPhone to all former Cellular One (formerly owned by Dobson Communcations) markets. AT&T has started to convert 200 Cellular One stores across 16 states into the more familiar AT&T Stores, and will start to offer their stable of mobile phones to all former Cellular One subscribers. The transition is expected to be completed in 2008. With the transition, Alaska will finally be getting the iPhone. AT&T is bringing the iPhone to Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau starting tomorrow (Sunday). What better way to spend a snowed-in day in Alaska than by playing with a brand-new iPhone? Zepto to launch quad core notebook
2007-12-07 19:02:00
Zepto has plans to release its quad core notebook sometime next year, but other than the speculated release date, very little or nothing else is known about this rig. Zepto promises that this will be the thinnest and lightest 17" notebook to date, weighing 3.4 kg. Chances are it will be built on the Montevina platform, and there might even be a high end video card (or two in parallel mode) thrown in for good measure. This notebook will definitely fall under the realm of a gaming notebook, and should cost somewhere from $3,000 onwards in tandem with other gaming notebooks in its class. Is this the first Nokia device with S60 Touch UI? Nah, it?s the Bluetooth G
2007-12-07 12:19:00
Thorsten from Nokia Port.de managed to capture a screen from Nokia’s presentation showing the handset maker’s known and one unknown device. It’s only natural to ask - is this the first S60 Touch enabled device? We can’t see any buttons on the surface of the device, so we may be onto something. Or this is just a planned PR stunt from Nokia, to get some media traction. If the latter is the case, kudos to Nokia — you got us all excited! UPDATE: Nah, it’s just the Nokia LD-4W Bluetooth GPS module. Still, we’ll keep our eyes wide open for first S60 Touch based devices… ---Related Articles at IntoMobile:Exclusive: Touch enabled S60 will be at the summitBrief: Nokia and Touch: What do we know about the next version of S60?Telus launches HTC Touch, S640 in CanadaMore proof that S60 touch is nearPicture: Concept S60 Touch devices
