Flashback: BlogWorld 2009 in Vegas
2011-11-03 00:17:00
If you're like me, and cannot go to BlogWorld Expo Los Angeles 2011, why not get in the way back machine and go back years ago to Las Vegas. For me, this was the first time ever that I got to meet these people in real life (or as the cool kids say - IRL). It was kind of funny because for most of the meeting, we were calling each other our twitter name (mine was "Dr A" back then. You'll see in the videos below just how much fun we had. How many Social Health celebrities can you name?

FamMedRocks Ep 21 Preview
2011-11-02 13:28:00
After a few weeks off, I'm ready to podcast Episode 21 of the Family Medicine Rocks podcast, tomorrow, Thursday, November 3rd, 2011 - Live - at 11am Eastern Daylight Time. I have lots to talk about, as outlined below. The main topic will be an article from the Columbus Dispatch from November 1st entitled, "One million in Ohio lack a family doctor." A lot of things fire me up about this article. The main irk I have is that there is absolutely NO quote from a Family Physician. The only physician quote is from an emergency room physician. Really? C'mon. So, I'll be talking about that and a lot more. Here's what's on the list to possibly be talked about on the show. Any feedback on any of these topics?  "One Million In Ohio Lack A Family Doctor," from Columbus Dispatch "Do You Have A Family Physician That You Visit Regularly?" from Columbus Dispatch "Downside of Doctors Who Feel Your Pain," from New York Times "Do 'Nice' Doctors Make Better Doctors?" from New York Times #FM...

Healthcare Social Media Faces To Follow
2011-10-27 12:44:00
Thanks so much to the Fierce Health IT site for putting me on a list of "11 Faces to Follow in Healthcare Social Media ." You can see the full list at this link, and, let me tell you, it is definitely the "A" list of people. I'm humbled and honored to be a part of it. If you cannot see the graphic above from the site, here is some of what they wrote about me: Why you should follow him: Sevilla says that doctors in the family medicine specialty have a lot to gain from being active members of the social media community. He also says that patients will drive such a movement as they become more acclimated with platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. "[U]sing social media is very important, in my opinion, to help tell our story," Sevilla wrote in a recent blog post. "For too long, I believe that we, as a specialty, have let others define who we are. Social media has a chance to change that." Until this year, Sevilla blogged about patients anonymously as a "release" o...
Why I Blog
2011-10-24 12:35:00
"Thank you for staying with us, Dr. Sevilla," said the front desk clerk. "Will you be needing to be making a return reservation?" I paused, and then said, "No, I will not." This entire week at Mayo Clinic has been a unique experience that I have never had at a meeting. I really believe that this is the best social media meeting that I have been to. And, I'm serious about this. I firmly believe that ALL Health Care Social Media meetings should take place either close to or at a hospital. Why? It's because that the reason I'm a physician and (mostly) the reason that I do do social media - it's because of the patient. Whether it be walking around the hospital here, or getting onto a hotel elevator, or in the line at starbucks - patients are everywhere. And, it is the patient that keeps me grounded and keeps me centered. One of the cool things about meetings like this (not only) the content, but also the meetings and connections that take place in the hallways and outside th...

2011 FMEC Boston Conference
2011-10-19 14:28:00
Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend the 2011 Family Medicine Education Consortium conference in Boston which will take place this week from October 21-23, 2011. I invite you to check out their website at FMEC.Net. The pre-conference workshops including an AAFP Student Interest Collaboration Workshop. The rest of the program looks fabulous. I'm sorry that I could not attend this year. Last year's meeting was at Hershey, Pennsylvania. In the video above, you'll see one of my first presentations at a medical meeting talking about Social Media & Family Medicine. In the video below, you'll see an interview with medical students from the 2010 Hershey meeting. Best wishes to the 2011 FMEC meeting!
2011 CAFP Family Medicine Summit: Part 2
2011-10-17 15:09:00
Just wanted to get some initial thoughts down following the Family Medicine Summit organized by the California Academy of Family Physicians. I'll have some more developed thoughts in a later post. These initial thoughts were from the plane going from that meeting to the Mayo Clinic Social Media Summit - the meeting I'm at right now. First of all, thanks again to the California Academy of Family Physicians for the invitation to speak. The audience was mainly Family Medicine Residents and medical students. From my understanding, the registration numbers exceeded expectations (I take full credit for that - Hehe). It's always energizing to me to present to residents & students. The opening keynote was from CAFP President Dr. Carol Havens. She asked the audience for words that they think of when you hear "Family Physician." And, as you can see from this twitpic, the audience came up with a huge list of Family Physician qualities. My favorites are "comprehensive care," "revolution,...

2011 CAFP Family Medicine Summit
2011-10-09 23:34:00
Thanks to the California Academy of Family Physicians for the invitation to present at the 2011 Family Medicine Summit which will take place this coming weekend on October 15-16, 2011 at the Sheraton Gateway LAX. I'm going to be taking my Social Media and Family Medicine story all the way to Los Angeles from my home here in Ohio. I'll also be part of a panel talking about leading through social media. The conference schedule for this meeting looks great! The kickoff will be a keynote talk with CAFP President Carol Havens, MD entitled, "What family medicine is and what it means to us, our patients and our lives." There are other leadership and advocacy topics. In addition, there are clinical topics and even a residency fair at the conclusion of the meeting. In the video above, you'll see a video promo for the meeting. I'm bringing some equipment with me to possibly live video stream some sessions during the Family Medicine Summit. I don't know if it's going to work or if the ba...
Social Media Tips For Physicians
2011-10-09 23:03:00
How should physicians utilize social media in their professional lives? In the video above, I was interviewed by Family Practice News at the 2011 American Academy of Family Physicians Annual Scientific Assembly meeting in Orlando. Check out this blog post where there are slides of my presentation at that meeting about social media. (Also FYI, as of this posting, the video above has the most hits of any on the Global Medical News Network channel - Yay!) Especially for Family Medicine, using social media is very important, in my opinion, to help tell our story. For too long, I believe that we, as a specialty, have let others define who we are. Social media has a chance to change that. As far as initial use of social media, I advise physicians that they are probably already using facebook for friends and family purposes. So, they should try experimenting with things like posting updates and pictures. When they are comfortable, then I advise physicians, for professional purposes, that t...

FamMedRocks 20: Kansas PCMH
2011-10-09 21:22:00
In Episode 20 of the Family Medicine Rocks audio podcast from Thursday, October 6, 2011, I talk about my recent experience at the Kansas Patient Centered Medical Home summit sponsored by organizations like the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians. Stories from patients are what I thought were the best part of the conference. In the video above, you'll hear a nurse tell a story of a patient who inspired her to train and run in a marathon this very month. Following this story, there are a couple of patient stories that are shared. You can download the entire audio podcast here. In the video below, you'll see my thoughts remembering Steve Jobs. I also invite you to check out other episodes of the audio podcast here. In addition, I invite you to "Like" the facebook page for the show, follow me on twitter, and check out my youtube videos. Enjoy!
Kansas PCMH 2011 Wrap-up
2011-10-06 12:17:00
In the video above, you'll see a vid that I pieced together to give you my impressions of last weekend's Kansas Patient Centered Medical Home Summit (Thanks to Tony Wood for the additional video). I know that I'm making it too simplistic a description, but PCMH is team based care with many medical professionals with the physician the leader of the team and the patient at the center of the care. Check out a good description of PCMH from the TransforMED site. Perhaps the best sessions of the Kansas PCMH summit were the ones with patients presenting. In the video above, you'll hear segments of two patient stories. And you'll hear the frustrations that they have/are going through in dealing with this broken health care system. Additionally in the video above, there is a segment where April Foreman utilized twitter following the Joplin tornado to get the word out before the first responders could get on the ground there. In the closing session of the conference, Dr. Kellerman stated...
Steve Jobs 1955-2011
2011-10-06 04:59:00
I was at a soccer game tonight - using my iPhone 4 - when I heard of the news. I just could not pay much attention to the game. I kept checking my twitter and my facebook pages to see the tributes and the "#RIPSteve Jobs " go across my iPhone. My first computer at school was the Apple IIc in 1985. I was completely amazed about what I was seeing on that screen and this thing that they called a "mouse." Our first Mac at home was from the PowerPC series. And, I remember trying to fix some problems, and how happy I was trying to work through that stuff - I was in Junior High at the time. Agree or disagree with the guy or how he ran his business, something I really respected about Jobs (I still can't believe I'm talking in the past tense) - something I respected is that he was always passionate about what he believed in. That will be one lesson that I will take from his life - Be passionate in what you believe in. Another lesson for me to take from his life is this - Always be a ...

Kansas #pcmh Day One
2011-09-30 14:29:00
Today starts the Kansas Patient Centered Medical Home Initiative Summit. In the video above from yesterday's podcast (you can also download the episode below), I give a preview of the meeting. Last night, there was a really fun tweet up at a local restaurant. I got to meet people from across the medical spectrum incliuding health professionals, patients, tech people, etc. Again, thanks to the Kansas PCMHI folks for the invite to attend. What I'll be looking forward to hearing today are stories about how Kansas is delivering high quality health care, and a cheaper price, wiith higher patient satisfaction. Another aspect that is exciting to me is the use of technology during this meeting - especially social media. Did you know that this meeting is totally paperless - even no name tags? Wow. That'll be a really interesting dynamic to see how that works out. We'll be tweeting out during the meeting using the hashtag #pcmh. I'll also be posting to the Family Mediicne Rocks face...
Physicians in Social Media
2011-01-17 11:01:00
I've been pleasantly surprised by the attention that I have received from my Medical Economics cover last month. It's amazing how many opportunities that have occurred since the magazine came out. I'll be talking about some of them in the coming weeks. Last week, local TV news interviewed me about the article. Thanks so much to WKBN/WYTV for interviewing me last week about the magazine. In the video above, I have put together a series of stories for the 24 hour news cycle of local news - which I find really interesting. I make some appearances on the morning show, and the anchor there said some nice things at the end of the first story. All this from me spending too much time on facebook and twitter - HA!

Dr. A Talking Social Media with HMCNews
2011-01-14 19:01:00
Jessica Levco from the HealthCare Marketing & Communications Newsletter interviewed me a few months ago at the Swedish Medical Center Health Care Symposium in Seattle, Washington. Of course, we talked about medicine and social media. In the video above, we chatted about why I think physicians need to be online, and at least be familiar with health information resources. I also encourage you to check out today's edition of HMCNews where I profile a couple of interesting stories. Addendum: Apologies if this is not working. I got some feedback on that. Maybe better access the video through their direct link here.

Dr. A Show 200 Wrap-Up: EndoGoddess
2011-01-14 12:42:00
Thanks so much to Dr. Jennifer Dyer for being on Doctor Anonymous Show 200 last night. She is a pediatric endocrinologist at Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. She is the first physician in her family and actually started out wanting to be a journalist. But, she became inspired to not only go to medical school, but also pursue a career in pediatrics. Pediatric endocrinology has to do with hormones in the body, which means diseases like diabetes in children. Dr. Dyer is known as @EndoGoddess on twitter, and she is right in the middle of the fight against childhood obesity. She has been making the rounds on the medical lecture circuit talking about how she utilized text messaging to take care of patients. She talks about it more in the video above which is a presentation at a TEDx conference in Columbus, Ohio. We covered a number of other topics in our interview including her philosophy on "meeting patients where they are" as far as coming up with a treatment plan, her pursuit ...

AAFP Connection
2011-01-12 19:01:00
There have been a few stated excuses why physicians are hesitant to utilize social media services for things like peer to peer communication and for discussion of clinical cases. The statements that are made are they physicians are concerned about issues of security and privacy. Don't get me wrong, I completely agree with these statements. It's just that organizations, especially physician membership organizations, have been trying to come up with the answer of how to build a site by which physicians can feel "safe" to discuss these type of issues. My professional organization, the American Academy of Family Physicians, announced on their Facebook page yesterday that they are introducing a platform on their website that is "safe" and "secure" to encourage family physician members increased communication. The name of this service is "AAFP Connection ," and I give a brief review of this service in the video above. Visually, the interface is nice. There is no doubt that one of the ...
EMR Not In Health Care Repeal
2011-01-11 13:03:00
In his first day on the job, newly sworn in Ohio Attorney General (and former US Senator from Ohio) Mike Dewine stated his intent to join the lawsuit filed by other states with regard to last year's health care overhaul legislation. He is fulfilling a campaign promise that is outlined in the video above. The core of the lawsuit states that the federal government does not have the authority to require Americans to purchase health insurance. Last year's health care debate was so confusing, I don't know if anyone really knows what is all in there. But in some discussions recently with physicians, they are encouraging the health care repeal legislation to go through "so we can get rid of all this nonsense electronic medical records." Now, I don't entirely disagree with this statement. However, from what I understand, the electronic medical records legislation passed the House days following the president's inauguration in January 2009 and was signed into law a month later. This w...

Physician Author: Terrorism Short Story
2011-01-10 11:01:00
One of the things that I have always wanted to do is to highlight docs doing interesting stuff away from the job. Recently, I was in our local emergency room (the people "in the biz" and the cool kids call it the emergency department), talking to one of the docs. He is a veteran of the war in Iraq and wrote a short story with an interesting premise. It's pretty obvious that the United States is pretty dependent on energy like electricity. What would happen if terrorists attacked the energy grid of this country? What would be the impact of such an action? How easy would it be to do? Well, this doc has written a fictional story about how possibly this could be done. The story is entitled "1111" which means the date of January 1, 2011. The story begins on the day before. It's definitely an interesting read (read below or click here). In the video above, there is an interview with the doc on our local terrestrial radio station. It's really interesting listening him tell the "story ...

From Columbine to Virginia Tech to Tucson
2011-01-10 07:06:00
The tragic events in Tucson , Arizona over the weekend has sparked another debate involving gun control, mental illness, and "how can this be allowed to happen again?" The latest information from over the weekend states that they believe that it is a lone gunman who killed 6 people and wounded 14 others during a meet-and-greet session with the local US congresswoman. The name of the suspect in custody is Jared Lee Loughner. A Cnn.com article called "Massacre suspect 'mentally disturbed,' former teacher says" gives a profile of this person: In a statement issued Saturday night, Pima Community College said Loughner was suspended after a series of run-ins with campus police between February and September, capped by the discovery of a YouTube video in which he accused the college of operating unconstitutionally. Loughner quit school after the suspension, the college said -- and it warned him that to return, he had to present a doctor's note stating that his presence would not be "a d...

The Long Term Impact of Vaccine/Autism Fraud Study
2011-01-06 16:01:00
You may have seen today's report from CNN.com entitled "Doctor Defends Retracted Autism Study ." The physician states that he received money not only from the British Medical Journal, but also the Sunday Times of London - where he has been employed since the early 1980s. This physician was stripped of his medical license in May. I, along with other people, are trying to get people to let go and move on from the false assertion that vaccines are linked to autism. But, what will be the long term impact of not only this fraudulent study, but its affect on the public? On a daily basis, the press hammers physicians for accepting as much as a pen from pharmaceutical companies. Oh yeah, accepting even a pen is against the law. Maybe that's why I haven't seen anymore pharma pens around. Hmm... This false study will not only help perpetuate the false perception that vaccines are linked to autism, but also will hamper announcements of any future medical studies, as the question of bias an...

Weight Loss New Year's Resolution
2011-01-06 12:28:00
This first week of January is full of news reports of giving advice on your new diet and exercise program to help you lose that weight that you have always wanted. In a previous post and video, I talk about some "Dos and Dont's" when planning for your New Year's Resolution. In the video above, I talk about some medical issues to keep in mind before starting your program. For example, is there a family history of medical problems like high blood pressure or diabetes? Well then, you may want to schedule an appointment with your personal physician before jumping on the bandwagon. If you find the above video helpful, I invite you to check out other of my TV interviews at MikeSevilla.TV. Enjoy!

New Year's Resolution: Weight Loss
2010-12-28 11:01:00
Probably the most common New Year's Resolution I hear year after year is the one to lose weight. I mean, hey, even I tell myself that I'll feel better when I'm able to drop some pounds. But how is that done? I get asked all the time what is the best diet out there and what piece of exercise equipment should people purchase to get the job done. And, oh yeah, how soon can I see results? Losing weight is not easy - duh - a doctor doesn't need to tell you that. But, in the video above, I talked with our local TV station about some practical "Dos and Don'ts" when it comes to trying to lose some weight as your New Year's Resolution. As a rule, I tell people to start off your plan slowly when it comes to eating better and incorporating some exercise. If you find the above video helpful, I invite you to check out other of my TV interviews at MikeSevilla.TV. Enjoy!

Courageous Or Foolish?
2010-12-19 19:39:00
Every once I a while, a story catches my eye as I scan the news websites. There was one this morning on CNN with this catchy title, "Mom Defies Doctor, Has Baby Her Way." The article describes a story where mom was going to have her fourth baby. Her previous three were born via C-section. Mom did not want another C-section done, and "defied" her doctor's order for the procedure. "You're being irresponsible," the patient was told. The middle of the article talks about the current thinking and statement of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology saying that "it's reasonable to consider allowing women who've had two C-sections to try to have a vaginal delivery." Of course, there's risks with proceeding with a vaginal delivery and risks of another C-section. What's always interesting to me are the comments following the article. I applaud the physicians in there who are fighting back the anti-physician sentiment and those who are pushing (no pun intended) the only home...
