Wrap-up of Show 114: Columbus Groove
2009-09-07 13:15:00 Thanks so much to Brandice Schnabel for being a guest on Doctor Anonymous Show 114 last week. Her self-published book is entitled "Columbus Groove ." We had a great conversation starting out with her love of writing poetry and her dream of publishing her own collection of poetry.I have always been curious about how one would go about self-publishing your own work. In this interview, Brandice goes into that and offers advice to those who are thinking about going this route. We also talked about some of the process she goes through in the creation of a poem - and how that's more difficult than doing something like a video post (which you'll see above). The day after this interview, I got to see Brandice at her book signing which took place at the latest edition of the Canton First Friday event. I got my autographed copy of the book, got to meet her husband and some of her friends, and all of us went out after the event to grab some dinner. Great fun! Thanks to all of you who were able ... Show 115 Wrap-up
2009-09-07 12:59:00 Thanks to everyone who were able to check out Doctor Anonymous Show 115 on Saturday. I talked about a news story that is interesting locally here - namely, the release from federal prison of former Congressman James Traficant. Interestingly enough, as of this posting, the article in our local newspaper has 1972 comments on the article describing his release.Just yesterday, he gave his first public speech, which can be seen above and was written about in our local newspaper. Still a polarizing figure, but it still seems as if this guy still has a lot of supporters around - and would like him to run again for public office. We'll see if his supporters follow him to the ballot box.The rest of Show 115 has me talking about a number of other current event news stories from the week. It was only a 45 minute show, as I really started to run out of gas near the end, and I didn't want to drag things out any further. You can listen to the show above in the player. Or, as always, you can cli... More About: Wrap
Dr. A Show 114: Columbus Groove
2009-09-03 06:08:00 Thursday, September 3rd, 2009 at 9:30pm ET (Note time change)This week, I'm very happy to welcome author Brandice Schnabel to The Doctor Anonymous Show . She and I met through Podcamp Ohio and she's been on the show before. Little did I know that she has been "secretly" putting together a collection of poetry for publication. On August 22nd, she announced on her blog that the project/book is called "Columbus Groove ," and we'll be talking about it on the show this week.In this self-reflective post, she shared this with her blog readers:I?ve really been hesitant to talk much about the book, because I?ve let silly insecurities get the best of me up until a week or so ago. Telling people you?re self-publishing can open you up for a long of ignorant and hurtful criticism, usually by fellow writers who want to accuse you of cutting corners or simply not writing anything good enough to be published traditionally. I?ve been lucky enough not to field those comments since announcing this pr...
Show 114 Preview: Columbus Groove
2009-09-01 05:18:00 We have a great show planned for you this week on The Doctor Anonymous Show . Author Brandice Schnabel will be joining us to talk about her new book called "Columbus Groove ." I first met Brandice while working on Podcamp Ohio 2008 planning. and she's been on the show in the past. In addition to her blog/website, this is how the author describes herself:Brandice Schnabel, MSW, LSW is a clinical social worker living in Ohio with her husband. She earned a BA in Sociology from Mount Union College, where her poetry was published in the college literary magazine, The Calliope. She earned her Master?s in Social Work from the University of Akron and currently works on an inpatient psychiatric unit when she?s not scratching her latest creative itch.I didn't even know she was putting a book together. It seems as if on August 22nd, 2009, she revealed this project on her blog in a post called "Super No-Longer-Secret Project." On the Columbus Groove website, this is how the author describes h... 2009-09-01 04:49:00 Thanks to everyone who were able to check out the Saturday Night Show 113. It was a little tough in that I was talking for most, if not the entire show, which can get tiring sometimes. But, I was able to stumble through by talking about me and talking about some news stories from the past week. So, if you weren't able to catch the show live, I encourage you to listen to the show in the player above. Or, just download the show here and listen anytime. Thanks so much! More About: Wrap
Show 112 Wrap-up
2009-08-29 12:58:00 Thanks so much to everyone who listened to Show 112. As you can see in the graphic below, I think that this was a pretty popular show. It was great to reminisce about how The Doctor Anonymous Show started, where it is now, and possibly where it is going. Hopefully, the show will be around in another year, so that we can talk about it again. We also talked about the MedBlogger programming track at this year's Blog World and New Media Expo which will be at the Las Vegas Convention center on October 15th. Thanks so much to Kim to writing up this post and this other post talking about show 112 over on the BWE blog. I appreciate it. I'm on call this weekend. So, I'm not sure if I'm going to have a Saturday Night show. I have one scheduled up on BlogTalkRadio for Saturday, August 29th, 2009 at 9pm Eastern Time. But, depending on how the day goes, I might just go ahead with the show, or I might even cancel the show. Sorry about being noncommittal about it, but that's what life being on... More About: Wrap
Dr. A Show 112: 2nd Anniversary
2009-08-27 04:46:00 Thursday, August 27th, 2009 at 9pm Eastern TimeCan you believe that it was two years ago when The Doctor Anonymous Show started on BlogTalkRadio? I can't believe it either. Thanks so much to BTR for not canceling me - hehe. Actually, I do want to thank BTR for making this a featured show. If not for my featured status on the network, I don't think that this show would not be very popular at all.In addition to celebrating two years on the network, we'll be talking about the HUGE MedBlogger Meetup which will be at Blog World and New Media Expo in Las Vegas in October. This year will be the first time ever that there will be a MedBlogger Track of programming at BWE/NME. You have to check out the star-studded schedule of this event in which the "who's who" of the medical blogosphere will be attending. Want to check out the schedule? Show 111: Fail
2009-08-26 20:02:00 I probably should have deleted this show, but I didn't. Now, it wasn't because of content, because I did a lot of show prep for it. Unfortunately, I had a lot of technical problems. Of course, doing a live internet radio show means that anything can happen. I thought that it may have been my skype connection. So, I called back into skype. But, that didn't work. I thought that it might have been the BTR site that was causing the problem. Who knows? So, about 15 minutes into the show, I just shut it down. The frustration in my voice is obvious. If you want to see how technology can mess up a show, this is the one to listen to. Hopefully, the next show won't have these problems. More About: Show
Show 110 Wrap-up
2009-08-23 01:03:00 Thanks to everyone who checked out Show 110 even though it was one hour later than usual. I had a hospital meeting that night and just got home before going on the air. And, in listening to the show again, I think that it showed in that I didn't think that my part of the show was that great. At the meeting before the show, we talked a lot about the current health care reform debate that is currently going on. I think I was still processing that discussion when I went on the air. I do want to thank my friend Ben who called into the show close to the end of the broadcast - just to chat. I really appreciate it. I think that I have found out something. It really takes me about 20-30 minutes to really get into the show before I get going. And, I think that showed in this show. But, oh well, we'll do better next time.Speaking of which, I hope that you're able to join me for Show 112 which will be tonight at 9pm Eastern Time on BlogTalkRadio (I know it's short notice getting this blog ... Show 109 Wrap-up
2009-08-19 05:49:00 Thanks to everybody who joined me to the two hour extravaganza that we know as show 109. Our good friends Annie and Burl did not have a show that evening. So, I decided to extend out my show for a full two hours. Thanks to everyone who called in and kept me going for that time. I mean, we had a great time. But, boy, I was really tired after that.I really shouldn't mention this, but there was an annoying person in my chat room during the show. I could have easily kicked out this person or call them out on the show. But, I didn't. That person even called into my switchboard and tried to get in on the show, but I did not pick up the call. That would have been interesting, wouldn't it have been?Anyway, you can listen to the show here on the player above. Or, you can download the show by clicking here and listen to the show anytime on your computer and/or mobile player. Show 108 Wrap-up
2009-08-18 04:00:00 Thanks so much to DG and Tiffany Hollums for being guests on Show 108 talking about them going through the adoption process. I began the discussion by asking them how they met. We then went into their efforts to have a child naturally, which was unsuccessful. Their next step was going through years of fertility treatments - first in Texas, then in Kentucky. One interesting detail which I didn't know is that they are both ministers and achieved Masters degrees in this discipline in the midst of all of this. There was a point in the process where they decided to stop the treatments. This was a very difficult time for the both of them. "I was mourning a loss," Tiffany said during this interview. Then, it was their dear friends who suggested that they consider going through the adoption process (Check out their adoption website here). The final part of the interview talks about where they are right now in this process - which is still early on. I wish the best of luck to the both of the... More About: Wrap
Dr. A Show 108: Adoption
2009-08-13 06:25:00 Thursday, August 13th, 2009 at 9pm Eastern TimeI always enjoy when people share their personal story on the show. This week, we're doing something a little different in that this is not a medical topic. DG Hollums is someone who I met last year at Podcamp Ohio. At this year's Podcamp, he shared with me the story of he and his wife going through the process of adopting a child.I asked DG whether he and his wife Tiffany would want to come on the show to share their story. They graciously agreed. They also have a blog called "The Hollums Adoption : Looking For A Little One To Love." Here is a portion of their most recent blog entry:Well, it took us longer than we would have preferred (due life and ministry), but we sent in our part of the adoption application. 2009-08-07 12:01:00 How does that saying go? Hosting a live internet radio show is like riding a bike? Well, maybe. It was great to return to the airwaves after being off for a month and a half. Blue Dog Dems in Health Care Debate
2009-07-16 12:12:00 Everyone wants a piece of this legislation. Late last night, CNN posted a story called "Blue Dog Democrats May Block Health Care Bill." Rep. Mike Ross, D-Arkansas, (pictured above) is a leading negotiator for the Blue Dog Democrats on health care. According to the article, they are threatening to block to keep it from getting out of committee. The conservative Democrats don't believe the legislation contains sufficient reforms to control costs in the health care system and believe additional savings can be found. Their letter to leaders raised concerns about new mandates on small businesses. Blue Dogs also say the bill fails to fix the inequities in the current system for health care costs for rural doctors and hospitals. And, the beat goes on. Let's see what today's news cycle has to offer. I'm curious to see the responses to the statements yesterday, and to see who is not happy today with either the house or senate proposal, or both.... Health Care Reform: Not Imperative?
2009-07-16 07:18:00 Well, you knew it was only a matter of time until the press started covering the court of public opinion - meaning polls. This story came out last night from the Houston Chronicle entitled, "Poll shows falling support for health care reform." It seems as if the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and Zogby International - have found that public support for congress and health care reform seem to be declining. The authors conducted an online poll that found 50 percent of respondents oppose a bill introduced by U.S. House Democratic leaders this week that would overhaul the system and pay for it by raising the taxes of the wealthiest Americans. Forty-two percent said they support the bill. Now, I know what people say at this point - it's bad data - who was the polling sample of - blah, blah, blah. One poll says this and another poll says that - who do you believe? It doesn't matter who you believe. It matters who the people inside the beltway believe as they start to ... Ohio Budget Cuts Mental Health Funding
2009-07-15 17:37:00 July 1st was a very important day at the state house in Columbus. It was the day that a balanced state budget had to be passed. As usual, politics got in the way of that and they subsequently passed a 7-day budget as negotiations continued. During week one, the impasse continued, and a second 7-day state budget passed. Negotiations continued....Since I have been in Boston for the past few days, I've been curious to see what was going to happen to the state budget. When I checked the Columbus Dispatch website yesterday, I was surprised that an agreement was reached. In reading the quotes from the politicians, it was a budget that "no one" was happy with." Then, why did you pass it? That confuses me.The big winner was not the citizens of Ohio , but the racetracks of Ohio. Yes, the racetracks - and probably the Governor (when is he up for re-election again?) Regina Benjamin, MD, Family Physician
2009-07-13 18:35:00 I was pleasantly surprised when I turned on the TV at the noon hour to see the President nominate Regina Benjamin , MD, MBA to be the next Surgeon General. Since the election, there has been much speculation on who the next Surgeon General would be. I first heard Dr. Benjamin's story when she was a keynote speaker at the 2006 American Academy of Family Physicians National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students.
