TV Interview: Depression
2012-02-07 12:27:00 In the video above, you'll see the interview done yesterday talking about depression. The interview was only two minutes, so I could only cover very limited material. In addition, I wanted to talk about the Behavioral Medicine and Wellness Center at Salem Community Hospital, but I ran out of time. The funny thing is that this was a new set that I had never seen before. Apparently, this couch set was new for the station as well. So, this threw me off a little bit, but I think I was able to manage. I did tell the anchor that I missed sitting at a desk - Hehe. If you found this interview helpful, I encourage you to check out my other TV interviews here. Plus, I have a whole youtube channel at MikeSevilla.TV in addition to a facebook page for the website and, of course, my twitter feed. Enjoy! More About: Interview
Social Media: Don't Do This
2012-02-07 04:20:00 There's nothing like a good fight taking place on social media, right? Locally, there has been a contract dispute between a radio station and (arguably) the #1 morning show in the market. The morning show is called "The DeLuca Show" and the radio station is WDJQ in Canton, Ohio otherwise known as Q92 Radio. Contract talks broke down today which lead to a Q92 press release and The DeLuca Show press release. For about 2 weeks, there have been facebook comments on both of their facebook pages which have been interesting to follow. In the past few hours, the facebook comments have been getting more negative - to the point where the radio station posted the facebook page above. What's more interesting is that the facebook update above has been DELETED since I took that screen shot. Q92: For those of you who have missed it and are demanding to know what has happened, we have issued a press release on what has happened with the morning show. It is what it is. In the future, nega... More About: Social , Media
Ep238 Wrap-Up: Physician Entrepreneur
2012-01-30 12:09:00 Thanks again to Dr. Jennifer Dyer for being my guest on Family Medicine Rocks Podcast Episode 238. She is a pediatric endocrinologist, physician scientist and researcher. But, most importantly, she is a Physician Entrepreneur whose vision created the Endogoddess App. We began the interview talking about the basic functions of the app and towards the end of the interview, she talked about some new features that are being worked on (I hope to have that video portion up soon). In the video above, you'll see our discussion on how it is being a Physician Entrepreneur. She was a full time academic physician including seeing patients on a regular basis. She gave that up to chase her dream of developing and marketing a smartphone app. Other topics in our interview include her prediction that 2012 will be THE year for mobile health reaching the masses, her thoughts on the new social media platform pinterest, and the recent announcement by Paula Dean having diabetes. You can download the ent...

Ep236 Wrap-up: Kevin Bernstein
2012-01-27 14:58:00 Thanks again to Dr. Kevin Bernstein for being my guest on Family Medicine Rocks Podcast Episode 236. He is a first year Family Medicine Resident at the Naval Hospital in Pensacola, Florida. We talked about life as an intern and what that means. We also discussed his recent blog post "Life as a Family Medicine Intern and Social Media Burnout." You'll see part of that chat in the video above. In addition, we talked about Family Medicine advocacy including the upcoming AAFP committee meeting weekend in February where this will be the first experience of some medical students and residents to organized medicine. We talked about tips to help these new committee members succeed. Kevin is the Resident Chair of the 2012 AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students which will take place in July. You may remember this video when we chatted during the 2010 edition of the meeting. Man, how time flies. Finally, we talked about the recent events at Penn State U...

2012-01-26 13:17:00 Thanks so much to the Ohio State Medical Association (OSMA) for featuring me in their "Member Spotlight" for their Jan/Feb 2012 magazine. The digital magazine was released yesterday and you can see me on page 9 by clicking here. The title for this edition of the magazine is "To 'Friend' or Not 'Friend." MDWebPro Interview
2012-01-19 15:54:00 Thanks so much to MDWebPro for the opportunity to chat with them about physicians and social media. They have a good presence on twitter. And, their website describes their services which include monitoring social media reputation (which is very important for physicians) and SEO optimization. I am featured on their blog today in an article entitled "Healthcare Social Media." And, what you'll see on their site is the text transcrption of our interview. Above, you'll see our chat in a video format. We chatted about my beginnings in social media, how physicians can start out in social media, and my impressions of e-patient movement. Welcome to those of you who clicked on over from MDWebPro. I welcome those of you who are visiting from their site. I invite you to check out the different aspects of my website and to give feedback. What #FMRevolution Can Learn From SOPA
2012-01-18 21:14:00 All over the internet today, including Wikipedia (shown above), you'll see an online protest. Not only protest, but to raise awareness over the legislation called SOPA and PIPA. The only two links working today on Wikipedia are SOPA and PIPA. I encourage you to read those and check them out. Google also has a good link today to read. What can #FMRevolution learn? Well, for one thing, not to be (totally) disruptive of the normal course of daily business. One of the amusing tweets today went like this, "Wikipedia is blacked out. How the hell am I supposed to treat patients?" The point is that if #FMRevolution can get a core group of passionate people together on the internet, say, to talk about the (again) impending Medicare SGR Physician payment cut that is due in 43 days, it just might have an impact. The effort can be to raise awareness in a creative way to get the attention of our patients. Just a thought. But, I, like a lot of other people will be closely watching... More About: Learn
Wound Healing Center
2012-01-17 13:19:00 In the video above, you'll see my TV interview from yesterday talking about wound healing centers in general, and specifically, the center at my local hospital. Pretty much everyone knows someone with diabetes and/or circulation problems and this causes even simple cuts and bruises from healing properly. In addition, people who have had radiation or chemotherapy as cancer treatment, sometimes this causes wounds that are difficult to heal. These treatments are good in that they kill the cancer cells, but sometimes they kill the healthy cells as well. If you find this interview helpful, I invite you to check out other TV interviews of mine at MikeSevilla.TV. Enjoy! More About: Healing , Center
PharmaPhorum Interview
2012-01-12 13:01:00 Thanks to Rebecca Aris for the opportunity with PharmaPhorum.com. They recently interviewed my new social media friend Meredith Gould. But, I was informed that I am the first interview in a new physician interview series for the site. I am honored by that distinction. Kicking off our new physician series, family physician Mike Sevilla who acts as a social media ambassador to the Family Medicine Physician community shares his thoughts on how beneficial social media is to him and how other physicians can become engaged. In case you are curious, here are some of the questions that I answered for the interview Physician Perspectives: Mike Sevilla: You’ve been involved with social media from its infancy, what do you think can be done to encourage more physicians to engage in this way and what benefits does social media bring to you as a physician? How do you see pharma engaging online with physicians? In your opinion how can pharma better engage with physicians?&nb... More About: Interview
Ep233 Wrap-Up: Fracking
2012-01-09 12:03:00 Thanks to Karl Henkel, Business Reporter for the Youngstown Vindicator newspaper, for being my guest for Family Medicine Rocks Episode 233 last night. (See preview of the show here) We had a great discussion about Fracking, Injection Wells, and Earthquakes. In the video segment above, he defines the difference between fracking and injection wells. This is important because the former is NOT associated with earthquakes, but the latter is associated with earthquakes. I also encourage you to check out the Youngstown Vindiacator website, especially the section of the website specifically devoted to Fracking. (The picture below explaining an injection well is from this Columbus Dispatch article) You can download the entire audio podcast here or at the bottom of this blog post. In addition, I hope to post other video segments of this interview over on the podcast portion of this webpage. Happy Monday!
Podcast 233 Preview: Fracking
2012-01-06 06:04:00 What the heck is Fracking, and why am I talking about it on this blog? I admit that I did not know anything about this subject until a week ago when a 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck about 10 miles from my home. Hydraulic Fracking, or as it is more commonly known, just Fracking, has the potential to have a huge economic boom in this part of the country. However, as exhibited by last weekend's earthquake, and the 10 other minor tremors last year locally, environmental concerns also question Fracking (and injection wells). And, as I talked about in yesterday's Chronicles blog, the potential to have huge political ramifications. My guest for Episode 233 of the podcast will be Karl Henkel (pictured above in the video) who is a business reporter from the Youngstown Vindicator newspaper. He has written more than a dozen articles on the subject in the past six months and has been a participant on radio shows talking about this as well. So, we'll do our best to break things down for you ... More About: Preview , Podcast
Stronger Family Medicine in 2012
2012-01-05 13:22:00 Remember the ancient days of medblogging (like in the early 2000s) when someone would write an entire blog post responding to another blog post? I know in this age of the 140 character twitter posts and "thumbs up" facebook responses, people may not be that familiar (hehe). But, this is a reaction to AAFP President, Glen Stream, MD, post entitled "Lets's Make Ourselves - And Family Medicine - Stronger in 2012." @AAFPPrez: And I remain confident of the ability of family physicians to transform health care despite a disappointing and frustrating session of Congress in 2011. We will continue our advocacy efforts in 2012 -- in both the public and private sectors -- regarding payment and other issues vital to the future of family medicine. It's hard to believe that just 2 weeks ago that many in the physician community, including me, were focused on the impending Medicare payment cut through talking about it and blogging about it. It's also hard to belie...
PrimaryCareClinician.com Interview
2012-01-04 13:09:00 Primary Care Clinician Interview Last fall, while at the American Academy of Family Physicians Scientific Assembly, I was interviewed by PrimaryCareClinican.com about Family Medicine and Social Media. Above is a link to that interview entitied, "Entering the Brave New World Of Social Media." As technology advances, social media is becoming more and more versatile and no longer used for merely just socializing. Electronic mail and secure websites present physicians with an alternative means to communicate with their patients, with the potential to simplify administrative tasks and maximize efficiency. Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and podcasts are other avenues physicians can use to provide their patient population with news and information about their practice. Dr. Sevilla, family physician and author of www.familymedicinerocks.com, discusses the potential for social media in the family practice and the challenges associated with sharing information on the World Wide Web. 2012: Time To Expand Your Brand
2012-01-03 02:54:00 As the new year begins, I'm like other people and thinking about some new and different things to do - especially in the area of social media. I've been through a lot, including "rebranding" from Doctor Anonymous to me. How will 2012 be different than last year? Something interesting I'm seeing are platforms like tumblr and posterous, which are kind of mini-blog sites. Also, in the past couple of years, I've seen people particpate on their blog sites in posting a picture everyday of the year. These have always been intriguing ideas to me, but I felt, for me, that I would be spreading myself thin with more and more social media platforms. For 2012, I think an idea everyone should consider is to expand their own brand. Don't rest on your laurels and try to milk your own supposed social media success. Try something different, would ya? As I've written in the past, I'm not afraid to fail - Hehe. (in the video above, you'll see a rare video recorded during my Doctor Anonymous day... More About: Time , Brand
Video: Patients Shouldn't Rate Doctors?
2011-12-22 13:19:00 In the video above, I talk in a TV interview about how some doctors are making their patients sign "gag orders" preventing them from talking about their doctors on social media. Is this fair? I talk about physician's reputation on line and why this is important. The anchor was also nice enough to mention my podcast and ask me what's that about. I mentioned that I talk about social media and medicine topics including the recent failure of Congress to pay a measure to prevent a 27% Medicare physician payment cut as of January 1, 2012. The interview was recorded on Wednesday, December 21, 2011. I invite you to check out some more of my TV interviews at MikeSevilla.TV More About: Video , Doctors , Patients

Even though I didn't mention it by name, I was talking about the Endogoddess app by Dr. Jennifer Dyer. The anchors seemed to like the term "gameification." I also talked about the idea of doctors friending their patients on facebook and what that means. The interview was recorded on Wednesday, December 21, 2011. I Will Stop Taking Medicare As Of January 1st
2011-12-21 02:52:00 Dear United States House of Representatives and Senate: I really hope that you enjoy your Christmas break going back home to your families. While you're home, I really hope that you will hear from those constituents who will be affected by the 27.4 percent Medicare physician pay reduction that is schedule to take effect January 1st. I really hope that the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Medical Association, the main stream media, social media, and other outlets start to cover stories of patients who will lose access to their physicians because of those physicians who will choose to no longer accept Medicare as health insurance. Did you know that one in four patients seen by Family Physicians are on Medicare? Did you know that for some Family Physicians, Medicare comprises as much as 8 in 10 of their patients? (source) What would happen if your pay was cut by nearly 30%? Oh yeah, I forgot. Government never gets a cut. The Federal Government continues to g... More About: Stop
2012 Goals For #FMRevolution
2011-12-19 13:47:00 The video above is a segment from last night's Family Medicine Rocks podcast episode 27 where Dr. Gerry Tolbert and I discuss Family Medicine and social media - especially going into 2012. Gerry is the host of the new podcast called Here's To Your Health where he dispels common myths in medicine. Some of his podcast titles include "Flu Shot Shenanigans," "Cold Myths Busted," and "Vaccine Veracity." In addition to his podcast, we also discussed what we think needs to happen for #FMRevolution to succeed in 2012 when it comes to social media. We agree that Family Medicine needs to take a leadership role in being a champion for physician social media. Are you a member of #FMRevolution? What do you think needs to happen in 2012 for Family Medicine and social media? I also invlte you to download the entire podcast here and to listen to our entire conversation from last night. The Doc Fix Debacle (again)
2011-12-14 14:37:00 Haven't we seen this movie before? It's late December (on the Congressional calendar) and physicians across this country are again focused on Washington, DC seeing how the "Doc Fix" chess game will play out. "Doc Fix" is the main stream media's buzz phrase for the Medicare SGR band-aid Kabuki theater that happens every other year in the halls of Congress. Last night, Tuesday, December 13, 2011, the US House of Representatives, by a 234-193 margin, passed legislation including the "Doc Fix," extend the payroll tax cut, and speed the process for governement approval of the Keystone XL oil pipeline, (and prevent a federal government shutdown). Now, the predictable political drama continues as the clock ticks down. The Senate and the President vow to reject this House bill. Meanwhile, millions of Americans, including physicians, are hanging on every word that comes out of Washington, because whatever happens, people's lives will be changed. Without action from Congress, Medicare phy...
Social Media Fatigue
2011-11-28 13:19:00 Ever feel like you're kind of stuck and you need a change? I was there last week. With the upcoming Thanksgiving week, life was adding more stress that was difficult to handle. For weeks now, I felt like I was taking all my efforts and playing catch up. Don't get me wrong. I'm very happy where I'm at right now professionally and personally. I was just tired. "Social Media Fatigue" is a dirty little secret that the early adopters never write about - especially those in health care social media. That's why I was surprised when a few months ago, my good friend, Seattle Mama Doc wrote the post "Online Sabbitical." I’m taking an online sabbatical this month. Consider this an act of both self-reflection and self-awareness but also an act of self-preservation. As any blogger knows, blogging every few days, taking photographs daily, approving and responding to comments 24 hours a day (7 days a week), while authoring content in your head every few paces, is an e...
Missouri AFP Fall Conference
2011-11-12 12:48:00 Thanks to the Missouri Academy of Family Physicians for the invitation to speak at the 19th Annual Fall Conference at Big Cedar Resort in Ridgedale, Missouri. I've been asked to do two sessions: Why Family Medicine Needs Social Media and Practical Steps In Social Media & Family Medicine. The slide sets are below and I hope to put up the video here when I'm able to edit it. This is my last speaking opportunity for 2011. If you told me at the beginning fo this year that I was going to be in 4-5 different states talking about social media, I would have told you that you're nuts. If you told me that I would be presenting at a national meeting about social media, I would have laughed out loud. It has been quite a ride this year. I hope to write a more comprehensive post later. This has such been a good time, and I hope that this experience continues in 2012! Why Family Medicine Needs Social Media View more presentations from Mike Sevilla Family Medici...
E-Patient Chat Tonight
2011-11-10 06:12:00 A few weeks ago, I met Kari Ulrich at the Mayo Clinic Social Media Summit. She is also known as @FMDGirl on twitter. Her diagnosis is Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD), which I admit, I don't know much about. I encourage you to check out the video above in which she tells her story. She told the same story at the Summit. Kari approached me for a unique opportunity to take part in an e-patient chat on the topic of FMD. This chat will take place on the FMDChat facebook page on Thursday, November 10th, 2011 from 8:00-8:30pm Eastern Standard Time. Also taking part will be Mike Ulrich, MD who is a Family Physician at the Mayo Clinic. Get more details on the chat here. Some preliminary questions have been proposed for the participants, including the following: What are the biggest challenges you face with your primary care physicians (PCP)? Share with us what you appreciate most about your PCP. How much time do you need with your physician for an average FMD follow-up appointment? If you co... More About: Tonight
#FMRevolution: Turn Emotion Into Action
2011-11-09 12:01:00 In my opinion, the #FMRevolution needs to learn from the Occupy Wall Street protestors. What do I mean by that? In the video above, you'll see a segment from Family Medicine Rocks Podcast #21 last week where I talk about this in detail. In brief... My friend Kevin Bernstein, of the Future of Family Medicine Blog, released a creative little video (#FMRevoluton video) getting people fired up about Family Medicine. Ever since it's release, it has made the rounds in the Family Medicine community, with numerous postings on people's and organization's facebook pages. And, as of this blog post, there have been over 1600 views (which in the FamMed community, I think qualifies as a "viral" video). Even after all that - So What? What does it really mean? People really like a video that says Family Medicine is cool? To me, it means people really like to feel good about Family Medicine. Does that really change anything in the world? Does that really change anything in the health care system... More About: Action
FamMedRocks G+ Page
2011-11-09 05:05:00 You probably heard this week that there are now Google Plus brand pages. And, yes I signed up the Family Medicine Rocks website for one of these delightful things. Why? Two reasons. First, I was curious to see if there was anything different versus my personal G+ page. But more importantly, I would like to see if anyone in my circles (hehe) also signs up their organization or business for one - particularly, I'll be watching my own Family Medicine community (basically the FamMed membership organizations and #FMRevolution) and those in the healthcare social media (#hcsm) community. I gotta be honest, I'm not going to be using my brand page that much - just like I don't use my personal G+ page that much. Unlike facebook, the critical mass has not been reached here yet. Then why sign up? Well, I'm basically hedging my bets. And, if for some reason G+ takes off, I'll have my stake planted in the ground - ready for action... More About: Page
Keystone Physician Magazine
2011-11-09 04:46:00 Thanks so much to the Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians for the opportunity to chat with them a few months ago about the topic of social media. They just published the fall issue of their membership magazine called "Keystone Physician." They talked with numerous Family Physicians and social media enthusiasts (ie - those from #FMRevolution) about their take on social media now and in the future. Here is my quote published in the magazine (on page 41)... I really believe that the AAFP has reached a tipping point at the 2011 Congress of Delegates and Scientific Assembly meetings with things like live streaming COD sessions, getting real-time feedback with twitter, and featuring social media sessions at the Scientific Assembly On a personal note, I was interviewed by Family Practice News and PrimaryCareClinician.com about the impact of social media and Family Medicine. AmEdNews: Social Media & Public Health
2011-11-08 03:59:00 While I was in Rochester, at the Mayo Clinic Social Media week, I was contacted through my website by American Medical News about social media and public health. There have been numerous examples of social media use in public health. This article entitied, "Social Media Increasingly Used To Gauge Public Health ," from November 7, 2011 - talks about this topic. Here's my quote... One such doctor is Mike Sevilla, MD, a family physician in Salem, Ohio, who blogs, tweets and has hundreds of Facebook friends. Dr. Sevilla encourages primary care physicians to spread public health messages to patients and community members by posting on a professional Facebook page a picture of themselves getting vaccinated against influenza or eating a healthy meal. Reed Smith Interview
2011-11-08 03:27:00 Reed Smith is a social media consultant and someone I met during the Mayo Clinic Social Media Summit and Social Media Residency. We had a great chat during the week and he's trying to get me to come down next spring to SXSW. I was honored to be asked to be Expert Interview #6 on his site. Here was the most intriguing question of the bunch... Q: In your field what has been the biggest win for social media and new technologies? I have been doing a lot of speaking engagements to Family Physician organizations on the topic of social media this year. In the Family Medicine community, 2011 has really been the tipping point for use of social media. My professional association, the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), really embraced social media this year even to the point where the AAFP President has a twitter account (@AAFPPrez), a Facebook fan page, and a leadership blog on the AAFP website. “The Prez” eve...
#OccupyHealthcare: Lucky or Lasting?
More articles from this author:2011-11-07 13:12:00 "When will healthcare have its 'occupy wall street' moment?" This is the question Dr. Ben Miller asks to begin the Occupy Healthcare website back on October 4, 2011. The group also has a strong core group of organizers who tweet out with the #occupyhealthcare hashtag. And, I admit that I got caught up in the excitement and took my own pic which you see above. The group has definitely been lucky in the last few weeks. First of all I've been impressed with their marketing and their "creating buzz" factor that they have done. In their name, they want to frame themselves as activists - like those of the occupy wall street fame - who just don't want to take it anymore in healthcare. Secondly, last night, they took advantage ot the most popular twitter chat for healthcare, the #hcsm chat (or health care social media chat) - taking a night off. I wasn't able to join the full #occupyhealthcare chat last night, but you know twitter was excited when there were multiple ... More About: Lucky 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 |
