Book Review: Life on the Refrigerator Door by Alice Kuipers
2007-12-03 19:15:00
This is Alice?s first published book and it explores the intimate bonds a mother and daughter share. It walks the reader through the hardships of broken hearts, divorced parents, and one?s own growth. Ultimately, the mother-daughter relationship is challenged when a health crisis emerges, forcing the two to come to terms with reality, and what is really important in life. Kuipers tells the entire story through notes which the mother leaves for her daughter on the refrigerator door, and vice versa. In this sense, it does not take the form of a traditional fiction novel, but it allows the reader to relate to the sequence of events on a very real level. Click to read more ...

Preparing for a Doctors Visit
2007-11-28 18:03:00
Seeing the doctor is rarely what i would call fun. You are usually there because you don't feel well and you usually fall into the following categories: Having a diasnosis you thought you had walking into a door- and possibly seeing a new doctor for a 2nd opinion, or a treatment/ investigation of some new symtoms, or your usual treament isn't helping- and you are feeling worse.Being organized might be the best way to help yourself when seeing the doctor about your diagnosis or future treatment. Nobody likes waiting, especially when you're not feeling well. Patients would rather be elsewhere, and contrary to popular belief, physicians do not like to keep patients waiting. Instead of spending time in the waiting room counting the minutes, you may be able to better use the time by preparing for the doctor visit.

Book Review: The Velveteen Principles, A Guide To Becoming Real
2007-11-28 05:10:00
By: Toni Raiten-D'Antonio When I was in college, way back in the late 60s, a popular book being passed around was The Velveteen Rabbit. Yes, it is a children's book and yes, I said I was in college. Deep within this simple, classic story of a well loved stuffed rabbit is hidden many basic life truths.

Book Review: Whale Song A Novel by Cheryl Kaye Tardiff
2007-11-21 05:58:00
This is a short novel by a Canadian author, Cheryl Kaye Tardiff. I love books that are a quick read, but don't feel "short". These kind of books keep you occupied, especially on planes or doctor's waiting rooms and this is certainly one of those good short stories that you can finish in one sitting. The story keeps you interested and turning pages.

Humor: Everything I need to know, I learned from my 4 year old.
2007-11-20 06:25:00
Ever see those posters saying "Everything I need to know I learned in Kindergarten?" Well my son is four, only in pre-school, and has taught me a ton. I find this particularly humorous, because this is the kid who insists he can go on a field trip to the future. (I usually tell him Why not?!)

Essay: On Higher Ground
2007-11-17 05:47:00
My tree stand was custom-built just for me. If I was going to continue sitting out in the woods every fall, I had to have something I could handle. Rheumatoid arthritis made a ladder stand impossible for me to climb, so my husband designed one with steps just six inches apart. Now, despite my handicaps, I could hold the rail, walk up the staircase safely and retreat to my ?quiet place.?

Saying Good-bye
2007-10-18 13:08:00
Ever since lung cancer forced Denise to become bed bound, Chili, my cocker spaniel, and I had been visiting on Friday afternoons. Chili jumped right up on the bed -- first sniffing for bits of food lost in the tangle of blankets and sheets and then curling up next to Denise for a nap. Over the months I came to follow his example. At first I sat poised on the farthest corner, not wanting to upset Denise?s arrangement of books, uneaten plates of food, and medications. Near the end, Chili nestled on one side of her and I lay down next to her on the other side. We both stared at the ceiling as we exchanged stories about horses and mothers and doctors and dreams. Once, in a quiet moment, Denise turned towards the daylight entering through a gap in the curtains. I admired her still pure skin and the way her chestnut hair cascaded around her angular face. She closed her eyes and arched her head back as if drinking in a stream of sunlight.

"Sick" Crafts: Make Your Medic Alert A Work Of Art!
2007-10-05 07:50:00
Yes, we are stuck with wearing "that thing" - it is important and a lifesaver, but who says it has to be... ugly? Unless you are lucky enough to have a real gold or silver medical necklace or bracelet, yours probably looks like mine... plain. I make jewelry and crochet, so I decided one day to play with my medical alert bracelet a bit. Now when I get tired of it, I just take it apart and change it again!

Essay: A Day in the Woods
2007-10-05 07:37:00
The day started early for me. When I awoke at 7:15, my husband and three of our seven dogs had already gone for a golf cart run around our farm. Putting on my red flannel housecoat, I poured my coffee and went outside to greet them. Here they came, lickity-split, so excited to see me. After such a hot summer, the cool weather had invigorated all of them including Eddie. ?I?m not ready for this!? my brain cried, but I forced a smile anyway. To them, I looked like I felt fine.

Review: Network Television Fall Season 2007
2007-10-05 04:47:00
As colorful as a parade, another fall season has begun on network prime time television. Each attraction is designed to capture your attention for at least the next 24 weeks or so. And each network is hoping you'll be so pleased with its current offerings that you'll not tune in elsewhere. There are many new shows this year. I decided to test drive six of them.

Why I Participate in the Walk Along for Lupus
2007-10-03 08:49:00
It is the beginning of October and you know what that means to us here at Butyoudontlooksick.com... It is Lupus Awareness month. For this month, I try to post mostly about Lupus or lupus related stories, reviews etc. I also spend a lot of time talking about my efforts with the Lupus Walk in my local area. It is getting closer...there are only 18 days left to fundraise until the walk (On Oct 21). We need your help to reach our goal. My walk page: http://www.firstgiving.com/cdonato Many people have asked me why I choose to participate in the Walk Along for Lupus. Of course there are many other things I can be doing with my time on an early Sunday morning. Asking a women who has lupus and arthritis to wake up early and walk is certainly asking for a miracle. This year will be especially hard to get out of the house with a new baby. Hasn't anyone ever thought of a sleep athon??

Moving Tips for the Chronically Ill
2007-10-02 06:32:00
According to psychologists, moving is one of the most stressful events in one's life that doesn't involve the loss or gain of a family member. That is true regardless of your health status. While there is probably no such thing as a 100 percent trouble free move, there are steps you can take to cut back on the amount of effort required.

Essay: A Spoonie "Call to Arms"
2007-09-24 22:06:00
We are at odds with an indomitable foe of the worst kind. One that challenges us with callous indifference and leaves us struggling while the rest of the world looks on unknowingly. It makes us question our toughness and our resolve. It forces us to make difficult decisions in which, oftentimes, none of the choices seem favorable. It causes us to grow resentful when we think of what we?ve lost and what could have been.

Writing Away the Pain
2007-09-24 05:57:00
My journal was full of bits and pieces of me, not unlike the diary I kept as a teenager, but now there was a big difference. At 34, Rheumatoid Arthritis was ruling my life. My doctor told me to keep a record. ?From one to ten, write your pain level down everyday.? His suggestion proved to be a smart idea. By documenting my progress, we could see what combinations of medicines were working and find out if diet or my daily activities played a role.

Healthy Snacks: Vitalicious Muffin Tops and Brownies
2007-09-14 01:46:00
I had heard about these Vitalicious snacks from Weight Watchers and a few TV shows like the Rosie O'Donnell show. I thought of them as diet foods and not just healthy good tasting choices. Before I tell you about these healthy snacks from Vitalicious, I need to take a moment to express how I used to feel about healthy snacks. I thought that for something to be healthy, it couldn't possibly taste good. I used to think that if a food was labeled "diet" or good for you, it had to have a gross, yucky after taste that made you never want to eat it again. Vitalicious seriously changed my mind about healthy snacks. I am now a convert!

Book Review : Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes : 5 Essential Health Factors You Can Master to Enjoy a Long and Healthy Life I recently had the pleasure of stumbling upon Amy Tendrich's blog about living with diabetes. I found her writing to be easy to read and interesting (an unusual combination when reading health related writing.) While I was there I noticed that she co-authored a book about diabetes. I was intrigued to see how her writing would read in book form.

Product Review: Liz Earle Naturally Active Skincare
2007-09-10 20:45:00
Ever since I first got sick, my skin has mirrored how I feel and during flares it is worse than when I was a teenager. I know that looking after my skin helps, but I hadn?t found products that were easy and pleasant to use, until now. Liz Earle Naturally Active Skincare is a UK company based not far from where my parents now live. I had picked up the occasional sample before and liked it, but never got around to trying more. This summer I was given a couple of Liz Earle goody bags at parties. Among other products, included in those goody bags was a Cleanse and Polish Set, a sample of Skin Repair Moisturizer for Normal/Combination skin and a sample of Orange Flower Botanical Body Wash.

Product Review: Powacycle Salisbury LPX electric bike
2007-09-10 01:07:00
Having had a probable seizure earlier this year, I had to surrender my driving license. We live on the outskirts of town and on a hill which means that while walking into town is possible, walking home up the hill when I?m tired often isn?t. The bus stop is further up the hill and I hate standing around for buses: the buses home aren?t frequent and I often get the timing wrong, plus someone always seems to light a cigarette right next to me. So the loss of my driving license was going to seriously cramp my independence, and just as I was taking a turn for the better too! My family knew how much I was upset by this and decided to club together to buy me an electric bike, as an early Christmas and birthday present.
