Friday Weigh In
2008-03-07 14:56:00 The Good:I've run 4 to 6 miles every day this week (with the exception of Tuesday). No snow this week.I got my jeans out of the dryer and was able to put them and wear them. Only an itty bitty stretch required, not the full routine. The Not So Good:Scale didn't budge this week. Ok whatever, I'm over it. Honestly don't care right now.I'm stressed out with other stuff in real life. Suddenly not getting the same fiber intake...then getting it back in the course of a week doesn't do friendly things to one's digestive system.I'm contemplating:What an awesome weekend awaits me: cleaning is SO fun (no it isn't. Just trying to psyche myself up for it)Glam's challenge (perhaps with jeans, not a bikini). Bathing Suits. Still. (Thanks again for all your input)Have a great weekend! More About: Friday , Weigh
The Family That Runs Together...
2008-03-06 15:40:00 gets in everybody's way.We took the kids to the indoor track for a fun-filled family night of running chasing. We were there for 45 minutes and I think I maybe ran a whopping 2 miles. Several of those laps I was pushing a stroller, giving piggyback rides, and trying to keep the toddler from entering the sprint lane 2 seconds before someone would come whizzing by. We had fun though. And what are you supposed to do after a night of exercise with your family?Get donuts of course! And no, I didn't have one. More About: Family , The Family , Runs
Is It Me or Is It Just Europe?
2008-03-05 14:55:00 I love this commercial, and I don't. Let's celebrate women who don't look like Sports Illustrated models. YAY! There's one giant step for women's self esteem. THen again, even with all of these women's "differences" don't they still all kind of look pretty naturally beautiful? (Or maybe just from using Dove products...I mean, they DID all have great skin...)Maybe I'm being a tad oversensitive or maybe it's just a Europe an thing....but it starts out saying, "Dove believes that every woman has her own beauty," and feels more like, "Dove believes that every woman [who is beautiful] has her own beauty." What do you think? Love it? Or a little bothered by it?
Baby Burgers
2008-03-04 04:31:00 Usually when we make hamburgers, I form the meat patty to about the size of my palm (I stick with the Body for Life portion control guidlines). This usually presents a problem because it disappears as soon as it is transfered to the bun. The bun always engulfs my little hamburger patties; have to take about 10 bites around the perimeter before actually reaching the meat! But about a week ago, I had a lightbulb moment. What about whole wheat dinner rolls? They're healthier, tastier, and the perfect size for my little patties! I finally got around to trying it last night and they were fantastic: hamburgers with swiss cheese, mushrooms, and red onions...on a regular smallish sized Rhodes dinner roll. I made enough for seconds but was really full after the first. Same for Aaron (that's a miracle, folks). So today I'm officially changing my healthiest food posts to weekly rather than daily (thanks for the suggestion Lucas!). I think it'll be easier to keep up without losing the whole... Let's Go Swimming!
2008-02-29 07:04:00 It's high time I start the search for the perfect bathing suit. Why?Because...1) It was 45 degrees yesterday!2) We have lots of extra money for me to be bathing suit shopping right now. (yes, I am lying)3) My old suit will practically be falling off of me by the time June rolls around. (also a lie, but fun to write)4) I will need a miracle suit to offset the blinding whiteness that is my skin. (unfortunately not a lie)5) I never got one last year.6) Anyone and everyone at the public pool will care how I look...especially when I'm changing diapers. (ooo, pretty glad that one isn't true...)7) Running through the sprinklers with my kids requires a sleek and sophisticated image. (haha!)See? So I really need one. I like long tankini's, they do good things for my I've-had-3-babies body. Here are a couple of suits that intrigue me, let me know what you think (they're from Modbe swim, love them):1(My first thought here: Pretty cute. Good coverage. I'm a Loser, Baby
2008-02-28 18:10:00 Just a quickie post to say I lost more weight this week. I'm really gathering momentum with the warm(er) weather and my gym membership back. I know it's possible to lose weight in most any conditions and excuses aren't really my style, but jeez, it really is easier when I feel like I've got some control over my circumstances.(and random FYI: I think I'm going to take down the healthiest food section. I really like it, but sometimes between grocery trips, it's hard to update with anything relevant or interesting. I'll still keep it in the sidebar as a resource, and feel free to send me any more pictures. I'll be happy to post them. But from now on I'll just post cool snack or meal ideas on our main page.)Have a great weekend!*****Update*****Could you tell I totally thought it was Friday? 10K, I Haven't Forgotten About You
2008-02-27 07:18:00 Two nights ago I had a fun little realization. I am signed up to run a 10K on March 15. That's 18 days away folks. And so begins "Operation: Make-sure-I-can-run-6 miles-before-race" strategy.Yesterday morning, I had a hard time getting out the door, getting the baby out of the high chair, helping the kids get breakfast and do their chores. My four year old screamed right as I was about to go out the door, "WAAAAIT! I need to give you a HUG! I'll miss you!" I assured him I'd miss him too and reminded him I'd be back quick. I sent him to find Daddy and slipped out the door before I changed my mind to even go. I had my doubts, sometimes I feel guilty wondering if I should stay home to get everyone off to a good start for the day. But as soon as I rounded the corner from our driveway and started running I knew I had made the right choice. It felt so fantastic to be running a) on clear pavement b) without needing multiple layers c) and FEELING the sun. No regrets. I got home 40 min... More About: Forgotten
Brown Rice Help
2008-02-25 06:26:00 Every month I find myself in a bit of a predicament. Do you ever have a stretch of time between the last fruits and beggies in your home and the next grocery trip? Whether it's a couple of hours or a couple of days, it gets a little dicey around here when I don't have my "go-to" food in large supply. I like to automate as much as possible; for the first half of the day I pretty much eat the same thing. It's healthy, it works, I like it. But somehow, take away one of my staple meals and I'm frozen: incapable of making an alternative choice. What to do? Well, lemme just open the cupboard...mmmm....graham crackers...Do you see why that broccoli plate was so helpful? My cupboard reflex was stunted while the beggie tray was in sight. But we're out of broccoli...and cauliflower...and a bunch of other stuff. I've planned a big grocery trip, but won't be able to go before Wednesday. I decided to rummage around in my cupboard and fridge and surprisingly found healthy little gems I ha... More About: Rice , Brown
"Not Before I Get A Picture!"
2008-02-25 05:30:00 In preparation for tomorrow's meal planning post, I set my brown rice in the oven (yes, at 8:30 p.m.) and started a couple of eggs boiling on the stove. Then I just hopped downstairs to check some blogs for a minute or two...or thirty seven...Until I thought heard a big *pop* come from the kitchen. I vaguely remember thinking "Wonder what Aaron is popping...and sizzling..."but then of course I heard the dreaded call, "Katie! WHAT that popping noise?"crap!I charged upstairs to find Aaron holding a pan of eggs with no water (it had completely boiled out at that point) and a kitchen full of egg smoke."Your eggs! You've got to go throw them outside!""Wait! Lemme get the camera!""No! Take the eggs!""Camera!""Eggs!"So I took the little stinky searing pot of eggs and through them in our trash bin and set the pot down outside to let it cool off (and release toxic fumes somewhere OTHER than our kitchen). But not before I got a picture.Ok. my throat is burning...gotta go open some windows. Chocolate, Donuts, Pizza...nah...
2008-02-22 05:17:00 Remember my funny and thoughtful husband? The one who got me that broccoli for Valentines day and actually did yoga with me? Don't be deceived. He also brought home this the other night:"What's the big deal?" you say. Just a big fat dark chocolate candy bar? Mmmhmm. Did I forget to mention THERE WERE FOUR OF THEM?He swore up and down he'd hide them...that he'd only use them for baking...Uh-HUH. That's why this one is OPENED. Fortunately he saw my incredulous "WHY did you leave this hunka dark chocolate out on the counter in plain smell and sight?" look and whisked them away to a top secret locale. He's bragged every day about what an awesome hiding spot he found and no matter how hard I'd try- I'd never find them. What he doesn't realize is that if I wanted to find them I would. It's like a shark sensing blood in the water. (he just came in and read this. "You won't find them.")Whatever. I CAN'T find them because I don't WANT to find them. Here are some more things I'v... What's Up With Yoga, Anyway?
2008-02-20 07:27:00 Here's a brief history of yoga in my life: I have never enjoyed it. EXCEPT for one class taught at my old gym taught by a guy named Daryl. I loved the class. Loved it. Never missed it. He was a great teacher, most of the participants were not really the gymrat type and I always came away feeling like I had been on vacation for 45 minutes - not in a sweaty gym aerobics room. But alas, sinced we've moved it's about a twenty minute drive and since it's a night class just doesn't work with my life right now. So I've searched. I've looked on my tv's On-Demand, at the gym,...ok...so I haven't looked THAT hard...I just haven't found a class that I like. Scratch that, a teacher I like. Daryl always had these profound change-your-life things to say at the most random times. We'd be in warrior pose and he'd break out some real-life tribulation analogy. Yes, it was cheesy, and I ate up every minute of it. I've tried two different teachers at my gym: the first one was an older guy: ... More About: Yoga

Foods I Didn't Eat
2008-02-15 18:50:00 Remember that? That whole section on our blog related to foods I passed up for the good of the goal? Don't feel bad, it's only a vague memory to me too.Now I'm starting to notice again when I wanted to splurge but didn't. Whether it's a treat like a big ol fat piece of cake (pictured below), or eating my kid's crusts, or a handful of chocolate chips, or a second helping at dinner, I seemed to have lost track of the fact that when I am losing weight I say "no." A lot. I pass things up everyday. I really hadn't realized that because I was keeping a food journal and not gaining so everything seemed pretty ok. Before I recommitted to losing this last bit of weight, I would've definitely had some cake. Not a lot. Maybe a couple of bites and I would've written in down. That makes it ok right?Sure! Except for the fact that those bites (combine with a couple of bites of honey nut cheerios, a couple of crusts here and there) add up in more ways than one. 1) I don't feel as full so... Do You Blanch?
2008-02-13 06:51:00 Do you blanch your veggies? You should. Here's why:All the cool* kids are doing it.It will make you feel culinary.Your veggies will automatically look more appetizing...And thus, your veggies will taste better.People will assume you have a knack for finding beautiful produce. They will like you more.(Bedsides the time it takes to boil some water on the stove) It takes under a minute. You will eat more healthy foods and live longer. Here are my broccoli "before and afters:"Straight out of the fridge:After I blanched them (same time of day, no flash, no color adjustment):In conclusion, If you have at all tried the all-day veggie tray (which, by the way, has been wildly successful), blanching is a must. Or if you find yourself pre-packing raw vegetables to take to work or in a cooler, just give it a try.*(I'm just assuming all of you already don't do this...I could be totally off base here...you may all have an extensive background in vegetable preparation for all I know...cut me some s...
New Scale!
2008-02-12 17:27:00 [Posted by Molly]I bought a new scale today! At Costco, they have a Weight Watchers scale for only $27.99. My old scale only weighed by 1/2 lb increments and this one measures by .2 so I'm excited to have just that much more accuracy. Also, my old scale was psycho. It would tell you a different number every time you stepped on it - up to 5 lbs difference! I don't know, maybe somewhere deep in the back of my mind I think if I have a more accurate scale I could produce better numbers...Katie called and asked me if I liked my new scale. Funny, I actually could say yes! I have never liked a scale! But at the time I was talking with her, I hadn't stepped on it yet. I just did and I have maintained since last week. Not bad considering I just had 20 people over for dinner last night.I'll let you know how I like the WW scale. I have their food scale (which I totally LOVE) and I bought their points calculator for $12. In my opinion, light years ahead of the slider. I don't leave home w... More About: Scale
Should I Stay or Should I Go
2008-02-11 06:42:00 Do I want to maintain where I'm at or really try to lose that last bit of weight? That's the question that's been on my mind since reading this post by Corinne. Here's the part that really stuck out to me:"The thing is that when you are trying to blast off the last little bit of stubborn fat, let's say 10-20 lbs, or you are trying to reshape some of the areas of your body, you have to work it just like a girl who's looking at losing 50lbs. You may even have to work harder because your body is already used to dieting and exercising."Light bulb moment. One of the reasons those pesky last 10 pounds are so hard to lose is because we get comfortable. I mean, I look fine, I feel fantastic, I don't have the same motivation that I did 30 pounds ago. I don't think I'd ever be able to stop exercising, but food? That's a different matter. I don't pass things up the same way I used to. Now I feel that I can have that piece of birthday cake, or splurge at a special event (hello Super ... More About: Stay

I Like Raw Vegetables...Really, I Do. I Think.
2008-02-07 20:47:00 Here's my new idea: Chop up a bunch of broccoli and leave it out on a plate all day long. I'm hoping to kill two birds with one stone on this one; eat more raw green veggies and just "roll" with my urges to pick rather than to keep fighting them. This entire plate of broccoli is about 60 or so calories (+ about 80 for the ranch). I'm going to try to trade my graham-cracker-biting habit in for a green one.I've noticed I really don't discriminate in my picking. I'll eat anything (and I do mean anything. Hello baby food.) So hey, why not set myself up to gain some more fiber, betacarotene, vitamins, and all those anti-cancer thingamabobbers while I'm at it? I'll let you know how it goes... More About: Vegetables
Why Do You Eat?
2008-02-06 05:11:00 Besides, of course, for the obvious life-sustaining benefits. Today I opened a package of graham crackers, broke the long rectangle in half and went to hand it to my toddler. And then, before putting the other half back in the package, I took a bite. (That's going to be a fun graham cracker to pull out next!) I stopped right as I was putting it back. What the...Did I really just do that? Oh yes I did. And then tonight I was walking around the house wanting cake. All I wanted was cake. Oh yes, and gobs and gobs of frosting. I sat there and tried to think about why I wanted cake, how I would feel after I had eaten the cake, how it would essentially cancel out my awesome run from earlier in the day, etc. I tried distracting myself, but there was no getting around it: I had serious cake brain. I ended up having a cookie and it kind of took care of the craving. I was left wondering. Lately I have found myself eating for so many other reasons than fueling my body. I'm not talking hol...
Natural Beauty
2008-02-05 15:23:00 [Posted by Molly]Yesterday I went to the gym and did the Satan Machine and then the treadmill. I left the gym with the red face look, obviously not an ounce of makeup, sweat dripping, hair falling out of my hat getting stuck to my sweaty neck and face. Got the picture? I had to run over to my kids school and drop off lunches. I ran into a lady who had to ask me a question about something. But then she stops, stares at me one more second and then puts her hands on both of my shoulders. At this point, I have NO idea what she is doing or going to do. "You have SUCH a natural beauty!" I almost spit on her after choking with shock. My response? "Yes, and I smell very natural too!"I waited for my husband to get home from work so he could get a picture. He got a good chuckle out of that comment also. Hopefully, my picture will bring a smile to your face- just shows you that you never REALLY know what people's perceptions are of you! Cool Runnings
2008-02-04 15:11:00 Apparently I can run on snow. This picture was from my run on Saturday during a severe case of cabin fever; I had to get out. I can't say it was a great run, it was more like a necessity run to save my mind from the winter. I almost cried when Ingrid Michalson's "Far Away" popped on my iPod, Far away far away, I want to go far away.To a new life on a new shore line.Where the water is blue and the people are new.To another island, in another life.I want to go far away.Away away, I want to go far away, away, awayI want to go far away, far away.Last night after a long day of snow and more snow, we saw a local weather lady on tv telling us to stay tuned for "...phase two of this snowstorm..." To which a friend said, "more like phase a billion."My thoughts exactly. More About: Cool
