Try Another ExcuseI've gone back to read it more than once, thanks Rachel!*Now to counteract my fussypants attitude (see yesterday's post), here's an inspirational video for you. Did you all see that Live Your Best Life Oprah with Bob Greene? Remember Jeff? Here's the deal. Just click on this link, and then click on the video link that says, "See How Jeff Inspires Classmates at the Gym." (sorry, there's an ad at the beginning of the video). Stay with me people, if you haven't seen it, it really is fantastic.*Feeling good and ready to get to the gym? Now you must go read this post by Cara of MiddleSister. And while you're there, you might want to read about her satanic cat, or her feelings on the banana. You will burn calories from laughing, promise.*Chris from Notes from the Trenches has started another blog and I am insanely jealous. 1) She is way cooler than me. 2) It's all about their family not spending mon...

A Case of the Crazies
2008-01-29 19:55:00
Seriously folks. I'm going nuts. It's just wearing me down. Somedays I love running outside; most of the time actually. And other days, I hate the feeling of overcoming a friggin mountain just to get a workout in. Today is one of those days I'm just not feeling and wishing I still had my gym membership. Oh yeah, there's also the big snowstorm blowing in this afternoon. I don't remember winter ever being this long. We're temporarily down to one car, and lemme tell ya, not leaving the house really doesn't help the situation, especially when your companions are all under the age of six.Lately i've been feeling like I've been nailed over and over again with little tiny changes in circumstances that have accumulated and are starting to resemble a bucketload of stress. It's like a woodpecker has found a weak spot in my bark and is intent on getting through the core. When I have a good day and make it a priority to go run, I build up a little bit back, but the stupid woodpecker j...

[This is Jeanne, she lives across the street from me. Yes, she is the one who ran the Turkey Trot with me. Read and enjoy!](click pictures to enlarge)How much weight have you lost?I've lost a total of 19 lbs. since those first pictures were taken after my baby was born. I initially lost about 5 lbs over the course of a year but then it stalled. Since September of 2007 I have lost the other 14 lbs. I've gone from a size 14 to a size 8 which I haven't been since my first son was born almost 10 years ago. I've always struggled with eating healthy. I am an emotional eater and also have a sweet tooth. I started exercising regularly again when baby number 4 was 11 months old (Feb. 2007) but I only lost a couple of lbs and then it stopped. I kept at it for months with no progress. Then in Sept. of 2007 I had a gallbladder attack. My husband is unemployed and we couldn't afford the surgery to have it removed so my surgeon told me she would allow me to delay it until he had a job as lo...

I Didn't Vote for Jordin Sparks
2008-01-26 19:29:00
I've been running to Blake Lewis. For those of you who don't know or watch American Idol, he was a contestant on the show last season and just came out with a new album. I love this guy. The spikey hair, the beat-boxing, the moves, the retro-funk-poppy-80's kinda vibe he gives off. Love him. And if you happened to be in our living room last year during American Idol you would've heard a grown married woman with three children yell, "GO BLAKEEEY BABES!" when he came on stage to sing. And even though her husband is a fan too, you would've seen some MAJOR eye-rolling.Remember his audition? His dad? You can check out his new album here:

Friday Weigh-In
2008-01-24 22:51:00
[Posted by Molly]New Year remember? Well, I did one of my goals. I drove down and re-signed with Weigh t Watchers. Although I have been sticking to their plan for the past two weeks, part of the success they claim is statistically if you GO to their meetings and have to be accountable to the scale gods there, you will be more successful. Although I think I don't have time (hear that? Just another excuse!), I made time. The Weight Watchers near me doesn't allow children (I swear I want to call the ACLU). So it has always been a challenge trying to find a place for Andie. Luckily, the other half of "Sister Skinny" (the one that IS skinny!) has always graciously accepted to babysit Andie. (I think she enjoys the touch of femininity in her home - no guns or swords are in Andie's diaper bag). BUT, WW just added a class for moms with children. I went this morning, made the commitment of 10 weeks, weighed in (I'm not going to talk about it) and sat in the meeting. You know, I just had a...

Mother Nature, Why Do You Torture Me So?
2008-01-24 07:22:00
It had to happen this way. I put up an "I-can-run-in-any-weather-cause-I'm-aweso me" victory post. So what happens next? Snow. And more snow. And more snow in the middle of the night. I wake up and if I can even see 10 feet out in front of my house through blizzard conditions, it's only to see another 3 inches deposited to the 8 that were there the day before. It's everywhere: the recently shoveled driveway, the street, the sidewalk. GO AWAY ALREADY. For the past three mornings I have gotten up and crossed my fingers as I peak through our front room blinds, Only to curse the injustice of it all, "why, why, WHY!?" I need so little to go running! But I do need to not run in a blizzard (and not on snow, it gets pretty dangerous even with a thin layer of snow over really icy pavement). Really. If snowstorms could just happen in the afternoons, my route would most likely be cleared by the next morning. But that is not the case this week. So this morning, when I looked down at our driv...

Phit-n-Phat Update
2008-01-23 17:48:00
[Posted by Molly] So I let you all know I was going to start the Phit-n-Phat training program. The reason I did was because I can't afford a trainer but I need to know what exercises to do with what. I just need someone to help coordinate my program. Well, after spending about a week going over Corinne's exercise "bible" (literally 2 inches thick of material!) I have started! I have done one cardio workout and 2 weight lifting workouts. I even brought my binder to the gym. To be honest, I felt sort of silly doing it but I had to. Well, I first have to get used to her lingo - skull crushers - any idea what that is?! If you don't, she provides pictures of EVERYTHING she has you do. VERY informative. The workouts took me longer than planned just because I was trying to follow her plan. The workout was very good - I had a hard time walking the next day. That is a feeling I crave! The cardio workout I thought looked relatively easy. It actually turned out to be a great workout. Differ...

It's All In the Cheeks
2008-01-21 15:31:00
Doesn't it seem like all moms have a "before" shot sitting on the couch in an old t-shirt holding a baby? Well, here's mine (I think this was taken October or November of 2006):This one was taken April 2007, around the time we started the blog: This picture was taken a couple of days ago. I was trying to get the boys to take a picture with me using the timer on the camera; the little one wasn't cooperating :)I probably should've done this awhile ago!

I'm Over It
2008-01-18 05:53:00
The fear of running in the cold, ice, and snow. I'm Over it. I ran every day this week even the day with single digit temperatures. THAT was cold! I got about 50 feet from my house and thought, "This is craziness! What am I doing out here!? Why am I not running back into my house?" I actually had one of my fastest times that day. If I stopped, even at street corners, my body started to chill. So I just kept going...faster and faster...until I was home. I've got to write these little victories down, they help outweigh the dorky stuff. Like Today, I tripped and fell. And before you leave a comment telling me to get off that ice, it had nothing to do with weather. I tripped on a crack in the sidewalk. Nice. There was a girl waiting at a bus stop about 20 feet in front of me when it happened. I swear I heard a giggle as I passed her. I also, feeling very uninhibited because of my black winter hat (that makes me almost unidentifiable to the untrained eye), busted out a couple of dance...
STELLLLLLLLAAAAAA!
2008-01-17 13:37:00
[Posted by Molly] Have you seen that Seifeld episode when Elaine says, "Stelllla!!!" Although I love that episode, that is not what I'm refering to. I just saw my friend Stella I haven't seen in over a year. OH MY HEAVENS! When she waved and said my name, I seriously did not even recognize her. Not at all! I can't even tell you the transformation she has had. First, she is divorced from her husband. Not that I advocate divorce BUT she does seem more "light" - not just the pounds but emotionally too. It's like a ton of bricks off of her shoulders. Second, she las lost weight. I don't know if I can even explain this but it's not like she lost 100 lbs or something drastic like that, but she has CHANGED. Her appearance now is STUNNING. And from the inside out. Before, she wouldn't wear make up, she would just wear sweats (not really care about her appearance at all), she wouldn't smile, she didn't have any self-confidence and she just looked like a worn-out mom. Please, I'm ...
Fill in The Blank
2008-01-16 06:45:00
"I would not be able to lose weight without ________________ . " My answers:1)My husband. Because on the days I whine about my pants being too tight, or how I ate too much, he's magically able to make me see things clearly without making me want to punch him (lots of practice).Plus he watches the kidlets for me while I run. Plus, he hasn't baked anything since Thanksgiving (knock on wood). 2) Blogging. I know there are a lot of you out there who know exactly what I'm talking about. What about you? Is it a person? Traveling + Weight Loss DOESN'T = Weight Loss for Me!
2008-01-15 05:44:00
[Posted by Molly]I told you all that I was joining Phit n' Phat. I am still very excited. First of all, you need to print out over and inch of material and my printer doesn't work. Katie was out of ink so I've been waiting for her ink. I looked over her book but she keeps it pretty close to her for her workouts. And then, I've been out of town all week in Atlanta for a buying show (home decor & furniture) for my business. (Can you believe it? I put Christmas away at my home and I'm already buying for Christmas next year! Crazy! Anyone curious about the upcoming trends? Bright, fun colors ahead!) So I'm starting those workouts today. Some good victory moments. Traveling is HARD. When I go to market, I walk from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. without stopping. No lunch break, no nothing! Pretty hardcore BUT you just munch on candy and chocolate at everyone's different venues. VICTORY - I brought food with me. I can't believe it. Fiber One's, granola, just some healthy munchies. Then, I orde...

18 Degrees
2008-01-14 16:59:00
I did it. I actually went for a run in the early morning in the middle of winter, in Utah. It wasn't that bad. The most annoying part was my face nearly being frozen off by canyon wind, oh and stepping knee deep in snow to push the crosswalk button. The other really annoying part was my socks kept slipping down, but that has nothing to do with the cold. The highlight was running up a very large hill that made me feel like I was halfway up the side of a mountain. Well, I kind of was. I kept imagining Bob Harper jogging backward in front of me, "C'mon Katie. FASTER." I also tried out my new hydration belt. It was perfect! AND allowed me to bring my little camera to take a picture from the top of my hill:One day down, four to go.(FYI, Molly's finally back from her business trip and should be back on here soon!)

Overcoming Wussiness
2008-01-12 19:51:00
I need to get over my resistance to running in less-than-desirable conditions. Here are my reasons:1) As much as I wanted it too, the money for my gym membership is not appearing out of thin air.2)The indoor track is only open certain hours, which are usually the most inconvenient ones for me. Plus, it takes 20 minutes to drive there in bad weather.3) I'm supposed to be running a 10K mid-March.4) If I don't get 3 or 4 big cardio days in a week, my stress level shoots through the roof. Really, I don't know how people don't exercise.5) I'm loving Corinne's at-home workouts but don't feel like I'm maximizing the opportunity because I'm having such a hard time coming up with a consistent doable cardio solutions.6)I see other people out doing it. And not the hardcores. People with iPods and un-fancy running clothes. Why do I have such a hard time? Mostly I'm worried about rolling my ankle, or slipping and tripping, getting injured and being laid up for a couple of weeks. Which ...
Blogging Now Burns 300 Calories an Hour. Honest.
2008-01-11 07:16:00
Or rather that's what I'm gong to tell myself from now on. No really, I'm pretty much always moving when I'm on the computer. Why? I am always freezing. It's winter and my computer is in a room that's halfway underground. I'm always jumping up and down or marching my feet to keep warm. Well guess what folks, it looks like my previously unattainable dream of blogging to burn calories is about to come true. It's all in my mind. Apparently thinking that I'm exercising while I'm warding of frostbite down here actually may make a difference. No, I'm not making this stuff up! Go read it for yourself, (it was on NPR the other day). Hotel Maids and the Placebo EffectInteresting, no? Skeptic? Believer?

Bringin Sexy Back
2008-01-10 05:33:00
Another reason I love blogging: getting random packages in the mail from friends you've never met. Heather was cleaning out her closet, came across a nifty water carrying thingy for running long distances and thought, "Huh. I bet Katieo could use that." So she popped it in the mail, and [clapping hands] it came today! ...random thoughts as I tried it on... -If I had a muffintop before...-I feel very Jedi. -Long distances. Hmmm. -Is there any way I can get away with wearing this at the indoor track...I'll just pretend I don't notice the drinking fountains...-Heather is so cool.-Is it sitting too high on my waist? Should I loosen it and wear it lower?

Adventures in MallWalking
2008-01-09 07:13:00
(scroll down for Biggest Loser thoughts)As many of you know, on the days that I couldn't run outside, I'd go hit the mall for a good ol'fashioned walk. It's fun. Fun to catch up with friends. Fun to not be too sweaty. Fun to not be running in 20 degree weather. However, this morning while attempting to wrangle all three children up and down the halls, I had an epiphany: Walking for 45 minutes several times a week may help me to lose weight. But it is doing nothing to get me ready for the 10K I'm running in 10 (or so) weeks. So tonight I went back to the indoor track and had a painful run. Not painful in joints or muscles. More like the realization that sporadic runs over the last couple of weeks have gotten me nowhere - except to curb a massive holiday gain. I've got to get back into my schedule, I feel like I have lost stamina and it's jolting me to get with the program. So I'm leaving you with some pictures of my disasterous morning last two mallwalking escapades. The firs...

The whole "Do it or get outta here" talk he had with Jillian resonated with me.*Least Favorite Player this Week:Neil. Get with the program dude. And I felt bad for his wife at the weigh in.*Favorite Moment:Those stupid phone calls home get me choked up EVERY time. The black and white photo montages, the piano music in the background, I can feel it coming on but am helpless. "I love you Daddy! Are you going to bring home a prize?" AAAAH! PLease! I can't take it, go back to Jillian in the gym yelling at everyone!

Motivation Kicking In
2008-01-08 05:34:00
1) Are you wondering if I'm busting out in some random squats and lunges? Nope. Just doing my jeans-post-dryer stretches. The ones that make them fit. 2) On of my sons said to me today, "Hey Mom, you're tummy is looking fat!" Now, he just turned four, so it's not like I really trust his perception. After all, he still says things like, "I ate lunch for one thousand three hundredy forty fifty seconds." He still sees monsters at bedtime so I believe I'm fairly safe that my tummy did not, in fact, double in size over the period of 3 weeks. And I'm pretty sure he meant it as a compliment because he had a big smile on his face when he said it. Still, it's hard not to hear something like that and cringe.3)Tonight we all chowed down on some Monkeybread and my mouth just wanted more even though I was full. I ate slightly past my threshold and just felt sick.4)It's been snowing here. So I've been mallwalking instead of running. (Just temporarily until the pavement is clear. I can do...

If You Were An American Gladiator
2008-01-07 14:28:00
What would your name be?Have you ever seen American Glad iators? You know, where a bunch of "regular" really fit people participate in challenges against "super" people with fun single word names? I'm just going to pretend that I'm not embarrassed by the fact that I used to watch this show when it was on in the nineties. Or by the fact that I watched the new version last night. Or by the fact that I secretly thought I could totally beat "Crush" in the joust. Or that I kept trying to come up with a name for myself if I were a Gladiator. (Apologies If you haven't ever seen the show, the super competitors all have names like Fury, Venom, Titan, Ice, Blaze, etc. But I kept thinking some my fellow bloggers already had the best ones : Mrs. Furious, Crabby, Glam, ThickChick.)Anyway, I can't really fully recommend the show as there are SO many things that are so cheesy and I really can't watch it without the Tivo, but it's really hard to sit there and not want to try some of those even...

[Posted by Molly]Update: Cookie Party was a HIT! Although I made enough homemade frosting that I now have a year's supply...I only ate 2 cookies and a pinch of dough. Very happy with that. (The picture is of some of the kids with whipping cream sprayed into their mouths. They couldn't believe that I would allow that!)Update: Katie looks FAB!Update: I feel like the little train, "I think I can! I think I can!" My home just cleared out 16 extra bodies over the holidays (that had the stomach flu circulating through them all). I cooked for 20. When you're cooking for the many, the mindframe is fast and easy - the last thing you are thinking is healthy. You don't have one extra spare minute for "how many points do I think this is?" So I just enjoyed the holidays with my husbands tribe of a family.Goal s: I'm going to be more realistic. I realized that I set WAY to high of goals and then when I don't accomplish them in the timeframe I've allotted, it is way to discouraging-I plumme...

How can you not love an 85 calorie, 4 grams of protein, 3 grams of fiber, waffle?I am not advocating substituting real food for the Kashi . Fruits, veggies, real whole grains, these things are obviously the better choice. But as I looked around my kitchen the other day, I noticed all of my "convenience" food happened to be Kashi (that's right people, I believe my FiberOne days are over)No, I am not doing this as a promotional deal; I'm not getting anything for Kashi pushing. They really do just make good stuff. If you go to there website, they just seem like such nice people too. They even had a snack drive to rid the world of bad snacks (watch the TV spot here).I need one of those booths set up right outside my kitchen door.

I jog. And I wear Pearl Izumi's. If you don't know why that's funny check out this ad campaign. Can we just bask in that irony for a couple of seconds? (Just in case you didn't click, these will help you get the gist of the campaign. Just click to enlarge)Hey I even went mall-walking this morning in them! And when I do attempt to run, I never quite look like an animal or predator about to catch his next meal, and let me assure you I am making no one nervous. So in the races I run where I'm terribly slow and am jaming out with my iPod, I hope people notice the shoes I'm wearing because that's right, they're my Pearl Izumi's. Maybe those people will base they're entire opinion of your brand on my run I'm sorry, jog.Muah ha ha ha ha haaaaa. Not so friends. 1)Vacuum the entire house at least once a week. That's it.But just in case you are wondering, (during some point this year) I will also beRunning a 10K and half-marathon,wearing a size 6,reclaiming a gym membership, whipping our finances into the best shape they've ever been in,setting and meeting lots more goals, and, of course, posting (most) every day until next New Year 's.Not quite resolutions, they were started to 2007 anyway. And they'll happen. The vacuuming on the other hand, I definitely need some of that extra motivation that comes from setting some goals with the rest of the world.I do love this time of year though; it's got me thinking about my blogging addiction how much I love blogging, what a great tool this has been in my progress, and how many amazingly cool people I've met (and real life friends and family I've re-connected with). Yes, I am talking about you. Thanks for reading, thanks for your comments, thanks for the emails, thanks for being people who get it...
Dodging Boogers is One Thing I Never Had to Do at the Gym.
2007-12-31 14:05:00
I'm still getting used to working out at home. It's just...different. There are definite advantages (pajamas, no getting in and out of a car in freezing temperatures, no gym smell) but also has clear disadvantages. For instance, this little early riser was watching me do chest presses. He was even grunting with me. Cute, right? Except for that bit of greenish grossness creeping out of his nostril. Mmm. If you know me, you know that I HATE boogers. I HATE them. I am the booger excavator. And now in this next picture the green drippy mucus was deposited on my cheek. That's not me laughing; I'm actually screaming.I told Aaron to get the camera before I realized what was actually coming for me. Believe me, I would've preferred a tissue to the photo. But then there is the occasional morning when one of my older kids will get up too early and watch me for a couple minutes while they're still "waking up." The other day one of the boys said, "So when you make your muscles strong, yo...

It's time to bid farewell to the old shoes. Now say hello to the new fancy ones. Thanks to a friend (who shall remain anonymous), I was able to purchase some brand spankin' new running shoes from a real running store (no Sports Authority clearance racks this time thankyouverymuch). Aaron and I tried to do some research on the best shoes and top-rated woman's running shoes, you know, just to be prepared before the purchase. But as soon as I stepped foot into the store, the nice folks at Runner's Corner just took over. I was so obviously a newbie runner, the girl who was helping me explained everything she would be doing, like I was at a doctor's office about to get some new unfamiliar test done. "And then I'm going to bring out many different pairs of shoes for you to try. You will try them on. then you will turn and exit the store to test out each and every shoe. Understand?""Uh-huh." It sounded simple but after she had studied my old shoe (even taking it in the back to get a se...
