Closing The Gap

[Posted by Molly]I bought these cute cowboy boots last year and was so excited to get them. When the finally arrived, I eagerly put them on. My feet went in without a problem but when I was zipping them up I realized they didn't zip up all the way! It wasn't a manufacturers defect; my calf was too big! It's bad enough when your pants don't zip but your boots?! So, I thought this might be a good "progress" photo. Obviously, as you can tell, I don't frequent the tanning facilities often.

"You're walking like you just gave birth."Really? I didn't even notice. I'm just so sore from Corinne's first strength training workout, that I guess I've been compensating by sticking my rear out and walking flat-footed. Baby steps. WIth a pained look on my face. Ow.

Biggest Loser Finale
2007-12-19 06:06:00
Amazing. They all looked amazing. (especially impressed at Jerry, Phil, Patty, Kae)*Surprise surprise, anyone shocked at the winner? Are you sad that a female didn't walk away with the prize? Or happy that the least-annoying member of the black team won?*We're any of you blown away at how beautiful those last three ladies looked? I know losing weight will change the shape of your body, but not the space between your eyes or the whiteness of your teeth. And it won't make you have beautiful hair. (*Contemplating for a milisecond wearing makeup tomorrow*...nope)*If this was the end of their road they're all set! But Isabeau said it best in one of those dramatic montages:"It never gets easy."What did you think? Favorites?Or were you too busy taking a photo of your favorite healthy food to watch BL?

Come See What I'm Eating

[Posted by Katieo]It's "New Feature" Day on Sister Skinny. As part of my new no-gym-membership-adjustment, I've made a couple of changes. One of them being the existence of a pen and small notebook in my kitchen, otherwise known as a food diary. I have always planned out my dinners and now find myself aggressively strategizing for the rest of my meals (thanks in part to said small notebook). So you now have another reason to visit us every single day (because we know you all come here EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. RIIIIGHT??). Once you get here, simply click on the broccoli trifecta and you will be taken to a photo. A picture of one of our meals from the previous day. Sounds pretty exciting eh? Wait. Wake up. It gets better. We want to see the healthiest thing YOU ate today. Or yesterday. Or this year. Want to see your favorite "healthy food" listed here? Send us a picture: Lunches, snacks, dinners, kidlet-friendly menu item, breakfast, whatever. Aren't we all looking for more ideas? More va...

Another Reason I Don't Want to Run a Marathon
2007-12-15 18:05:00
The last (and only) race I ran was on Thanksgiving Day. It was a 4-miler that basically went around 2 big blocks. And I still laid awake at night worrying about this.

Mighty Weigh-In
2007-12-14 16:25:00
[Posted by Molly]Stand in line to give me a HIGH FIVE! That's right - a HIGH FIVE! Five pounds this week. We all know that it's probably water weight but I don't care - 5 numbers down on the scale. I'm in the groove!I think I'm going to start posting for the month of December all of the goodies I'm turning down. Last night, at a church gathering, a hot piece of chocolate cake with icing dripping off & ice cream. The ladies were so gracious there that every time one of the servers walked by me and saw I didn't have anything in my fat fingers, they offered me this tempting treat. 4 times later I was getting mad. Finally, I grabbed a cup of water just so I could have something in my hand. Although church meetings always have good intentions, have you ever noticed you cannot have any gathering without food?!

Yummy Tortilla Soup Recipe
2007-12-14 14:53:00
[Posted by Molly]I had to go to a luncheon (I really did have to go - I'm trying so hard to be good that I didn't want to throw myself in with the tons of goodies that would be there). We were served Tortilla Soup . And let me just tell you, it was splendid! I even asked for the recipe. I looked it over and it looked just fine. So here it is:1 large onion, chopped2 cloves garlic2 Tbsp. oil2 lb. diced or shredded, cooked chicken1 (14 1/2 oz.) can tomatoes1 (5 oz) can Ro-Tel tomatoes & green chilies1 can beef broth1 can chicken broth1 can tomato soup1 1/2 cans water1 can drained corn1 can drained black beans1 tsp. cumin1/2 to 1 tsp. chili powder1 small can tomato sauce1 tsp. salt1 tsp. lemon pepper2 tsp. Worcestershire sauceSaute first five ingredients. Add remaining ingredients. Simmer for 1 hour. Serve with grated cheese, tortilla chips & sour cream. Now, when I ate it, I held on the cheese, chips & sour cream. I don't know, but something about all of these spices together, it was ...

Re-evaluation

I unwrapped the scale. (If you don't know why my scale was wrapped up, check this out first)It was not as horrible as I had imagined. In fact, it was ok.In fact, these last few weeks without the scale have been divine. I loooove not being chained to such a fickle machine. I didn't have any rapid mood wings because of a number, nor did I reward myself after seeing a good number. No numbers = happy Katie. However, considering I will be taking an extended leave of absence from the gym, I am making some adjustments that include bringing the scale back into my life. For a limited engagement. (sigh)1) Upon review, I have decided that plateau-land and "meh" weight loss isn't where I want to be. So I've made the decision to sign up with Corinne and the ladies over at Phit-N-Phat. (If you're unfamiliar, here's a spotlight on Corinne we did awhile back and here's another on Lorie, one of her clients.)2) I am totally inspired by Amy Lawson who ran the Dallas marathon over the weeken...

I'm stressed out and exhausted. And it's making me want to eat. I really do miss my gym membership. I know I'm going to sound like a big baby, but if I think about it too hard I start to tear up. I can barely stand the thought of my favorite teachers teaching my favorite classes and I'm stuck going around in circles on a track getting passed by grandmothers and pregnant ladies. (That's a fact people.) The track is only open certain hours so I've been going in the early evening, which is totally throwing off dinnertime, my eating routine, and a bunch of other stuff. I'm dying to get on the scale. I came SO close to unwrapping it last night. Bottom line: I'm just not feelin it right now (and yes, I still am going to call 24). (Biggest Loser last night? What did you think?)[Photo credit: doc18 on Flickr]
1 Full Pound Lost!
2007-12-11 16:18:00
[Posted by Molly]I didn't post about my loss (yes, let me say that again - LOSS) last week. I was down 1 full pound! Not point something, a full pound! It's nice to be back with showing a loss. It was that time of the month for me so hopefully, there will be even a bigger loss this week. Right now, my biggest obstacle is my neighbors. We probably get over 20 neighbor gifts during the holiday season, mostly goodies. My biggest weakness on this earth is homemade cookies. Our doorbell rang at 9:30 p.m. last night with a plate full of homemade sugar cookies. My husband, although he knows I'm trying to lose weight, it is just his nature to offer everything and anything, brought up the plate to me in bed to see if I wanted any. I looked at him, took one, opened our bedroom window and out it went! (I think he thinks I'm going nuts!!) What a great victory for me! He quickly took the rest of the plate downstairs. I probably would of just kept hurling them out of the window....Here's to ...

It's Not "Goodbye," It's "See You Later."

My Gold's Gym Membership is officially expired. I've been in massive denial about it, hoping for a miracle. With Christmas coming up, renewing it right now would just be overextending ourselves financially. And if you're thinking, "Gee. Thanks for the invitation to the pity party, but I've got to...go...floss...and...change my smoke detector batteries...," don't worry. I've accepted it; it's just the way things are right now and hopefully I'll be able to be back satan-ing and spinning in the new year. And while I'm semi-ok with this temporary set-back, I'm also in a panic. The holidays! HELLO. Could this have happened at a worse time? I'm so not a home-exerciser, I can kind of get by with weights but we don't own a treadmill and I haven't yet found a doable cardio solution. Jumping jacks? Running in place? Going up and down stairs? It's not that I have anything against working out at home, I have just never been able to do a single workout video without an interruptio...

Again? I Just Went Yesterday!
2007-12-07 13:47:00
Some days I just LOVE exercising. Most days, I don't....love it, that is. I just thank my lucky stars for amazing teachers at the gym, my iPod, and of course the children. Who (bless their little superhero hearts) make my time at the gym feel like a vacation getaway.Have you had any "...Mmmm, probably shouldn't go to the gym today" thoughts lately? I'm having an overabundance of them this morning.Drop off your best excuses in the comments section (mine are already there). Leave them for good and then go workout!Anyone out there think they have a reeeally justifiable, colorful, lame, silly, ridiculous, or sad excuse for not exercising? Do tell! (btw, Mary and Kelly, yours were my favorites!)***UPDATE***Events conspired against me and I WAS NOT able to make it to the gym. So I did some Billy Blanks and push-ups. I love how those super fit in the tae-bo people are drenched in sweat after 5 light minutes of punching. And what's with all the "You can do it!" talk from Billy? ugh. I d...

Closet Eater (Hoarder)
2007-12-06 16:27:00
[Posted by Molly]A sad reality sunk into me this week. Very hard to admit - but very true. I'm a hoarder. Not of possessions like many people are. I'm actually a neat person. But with food. I'm sure everyone has had an episode in their life but here's mine: I was christmas shopping all day. Tired and hungry I passed PF Changs. I had a gift certificate to them so I thought to myself, "Perfect! I'm not even going to spend money on food!" I ordered an appetizer. I'm sure you're all familiar with the lettuce wraps. Sounds so healthy doesn't it? It's not. It's something like 12 points per wrap.I ate it in the car so I could hurry home. Because I only ate one small one I had to bring the rest into my home. That's when the insanity happened in my mind. I did not want to share - bottom line. To be honest, I really don't think I'm a selfish person BUT something changed inside me because of these stupid wraps. So, I hid them in my shopping bag, took them upstairs to my closet and...

I've been struggling over the last couple of weeks to really come up with a "favorite" on NBC's Biggest Loser . No one is really standing out to me. OH wait. One person is:We've been slacking in our Bob Harper fan club duties. Which duties include...I'm not sure... Finding Bob Harper ringtones perhaps?Anyhoo, my favorite moment from last night had to be when he and Nicole and Neil were jogging and he whispered, "I want you to pass him!" to Nicole. Other fav moments, or people? If any of you happened to miss the episode (by choice or chance) don't worry, I've thrown in some awesome links just for you. To Drink Or Not To Drink
2007-12-03 15:22:00
[Posted by Molly]I am not a pop drinker (some say "soda", I say "pop"). We were just raised without it in our home so I just never have gotten into the habit of buying it. That being said, a friend of mine who knows that I am doing this blog, posed a question to me (for some reason now, my friends think I'm the expert in the weight-loss field because of this blog! HILARIOUS! I just want to scream at them and say, "TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT ME! Do I LOOK like I know what I'm talking about??!) So I thought I'd throw the question at you.Diet Coke - does it hinder you in your weight loss? All I know about it is this: No calories. I asked my teacher at Weight Watchers what she really thought about diet pop and she said as long as I get my water in I'm fine. But never drink MORE pop than water. Some people think because of the caffeine maybe your more hyper which makes you move more which helps you burn calories. To be honest, I have NO idea because I don't drink it. BUT, a lot of people I ...

Corn Chips topped with Mango Salsa and Cottage CheeseI have to count and measure this one; if I don't I'd end up inhaling the entire bag of corn chips along with the salsa. I love the cottage cheese with it because it kind of acts like sour cream (my husband would die before using cottage cheese as a substitute for anything, so I understand if it doesn't seem appealing). And in case you're wondering, the mango salsa is not homemade.

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Crappy Driving Season
2007-12-01 19:04:00
This is what I saw when I looked out the window this morning: And so began the whimpering. I sounded like a two year old at bedtime. "I don't wanna go to the gym." over and over and over. And through all the sighing, frowning, grumbling, cringing and stomping, I got my shoes on and got in the car. Then I grumbled some more...especially at drivers going twice the speed limit on bad roads.Even after I pulled into the parking lot, I debated whether to get out of the car or just turn around and go home. I stayed. I had to. I didn't want to be a big fat hypocrite after dishing out get-your-butt-to-the-gym comments (lately to Glam and Carolyn). So I went, and it was the best spin class I've been to yet, with my favorite teacher. It's becoming very clear to me why I ALWAYS put on weight during the holidays. Besides the treats, I'm generally a wuss when it comes to bad weather. The sloshy parking lots, bad drivers, not to mention it's all wet and coooold! (And no, I didn't grow up in...

I Blame Williams-Sonoma and Their Wondrous Catalog
2007-12-01 03:04:00
Have you ever heard someone say this after they've started a diet, "...and then the most amazing thing happened! The cravings just -poof- went away! I just didn't want any ______ (fill in the blank with sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, bad fats, carbs, etc.) anymore!" Well sure they went away. But don't they eventually come back? I don't thing any of us really want to pollute our body with over-processed can't-pronounce-the-ingredient-list stuff on a daily basis. But once in awhile? Ever? After you start eating well, do you find that your taste for sugar, highly processed carbs, and really horrible saturated fats starts to diminish? Since we've started the blog, I've noticed that there are some things, like regular pop, that's just waaaay to sweet now. And if I ever were to have a big spoonful of our homemade buttercream frosting, yes, I would feel ill shortly thereafter. But the "ill" feeling doesn't usually stop me. (If anything stops me, it's thinking how many miles I...

Celebrating the Little Victories
2007-11-29 14:52:00
Whoever said coming back would be easy?! After my happy video, "Yes, I'm Back!" and all of your encouraging, motivating, inspiring comments, the real world set in. After a long day on Tuesday, when my husband finally came home, I made the decision to go workout. I had ZERO desire. Tired, cranky and just didn't want to. I'm sure many of you can relate to this feeling. I started with the Satan Machine. I don't know what I was thinking! In the past, it has been my number #1 machine. I swear, I started to have an ashmatic occurence. I don't even HAVE ashma! It was so hard not to keep playing in my mind over and over what level I was at 4 months ago compared to now...Then, I made it over to the treadmill. Remember? I was actually turning into a runner previously! Well, I walked/ran every 5 minutes. Well, honestly, I only ran 5 minutes. The rest was walking. To be honest, it was hard to walk at a fast pace and an incline. The whole time, I was just getting more and more discouraged. ...
Multiple Choice Just For You
2007-11-28 15:16:00
My favorite part of Biggest Loser last night wasa) Neil's last-chance workout. Seriously, did you think at any point that would actually keel over and die?b) Nicole diving headfirst into a shallow pool and subsequently chipping her two front teeth.c) I didn't watch the Biggest Loser (your name might also be Crabby McSlacker).d) Seeing that escalator challenge from last season...even just for a couple of minutes. (That one happened to be my all-time favorite. Can we say SATAN MACHINE? I would've totally kicked butt in that challenge.) e) Seeing some of the contestants literally wipe out serious potentially life-threatening conditions in three months. f) Hearing Jillian say, "I mean, It's getting all Cirque du Soleil up in there."

Merry Christmas to Me
2007-11-27 15:43:00
Scale-free holidays: It's either really smart or really stupid. If everything goes as planned, I will unwrap my gift to myself after Christmas and see a nice *little* number. "(Gasp) For me? a 136? You shouldn't have!" And even if the scale doesn't get me what I want, maybe I'll be able to breathe in my goal jeans. "Weigh-in" Friday's for me will now be "Measure-in" Fridays . The tape measure seems so much less demonic. It's risky, I know. But during the Thanksgiving break, I was driving myself bonkers by stepping on the scale way too much (no gain though, 9 miles and 1 spin class later).Any measurers out there? Do any of you use an alternative method for judging your progress (other than the scale)? (Clothes, body fat, tape measure, yard stick, water displacement...) Have any of you said goodbye to the scale for good?

The Race is over, and I have to say, it was SO much fun. There's a totally different dynamic to running when you're surrounded by hundreds of people. (Passing people = very fun. Getting passed = not so much.) So here I am about to cross the finish line (all in black).Just so there's no confusion, the people walking leisurely beside me were a part of the 2 mile WALK that started AFTER the 4 mile run. As for the girl on the bike, I'm just hoping she was part of the walk too. I'm slow, but not THAT slow, OK?I have got to say THANKYOU! to my cute neighbor who ran the race with me. I signed her up for this race without her permission. I know she was a little nervous (and possibly upset with me, hehe) but she did great. I'm already trying to convince her to do a 10K with me in March.I've also gotta say thanks to p.o.m. for suggesting a race, Lisa for letting me know about this one, and to all of you who left such great suggestions and running tips.
