One of my demises.I'm pretty sure a handful of mini-marshmellows does not qualify as a healthy snack. But I've noticed recently my need to mindlessly sample everything before putting it away. Maybe I feel like I'm reaching in a goody bag for a prize.KATIE: Hate to break it to you, the prize is ALWAYS going to be extra calories.Gotta bet back on track with my eating. With my mind so focused on other important stuff, grazing has become the norm - I don't even realize I'm doing it. I'm thinking that putting a little more effort into making healthier choices might even help me to feel better and more capable to handle everything. We'll see.(P.s. And Mol, I'm not so sure a huge box of Fiber One's are very effective over here. Because when I open my cupboard several times a day and see this:Well, that little black space is just calling to me...or my hand rather... it seems to have a mind of it's own. Because who, using their own brain, would have more than 2 of those fiberliciou...

My face feels fat. My arms look fat. I'm back. I never really left but I've been going half-mast since the middle of June. We have had company everyday until today. My kids went back to school today. It's a blessing and a curse to have family stay with you. The blessing of course is they're family! Cousins, cousins and more cousins! One big continuous lalapalooza going on! The downside is there isn't any normalcy to my life. It seems like when I'm trying to lose weight, I have to use my brain and put energy into the right decisions, have will-power on hand, etc. It seems like when there are guests around, all rules go out the door. Sugar cereal abounds, mac-n-cheese flows freely and late-night eating becomes the norm.SOOOO, on that note, I'm back. I'm recommitting myself. Have I been in this position before? Yes, many times. But HEY! At least I'm here! Instead of feeling defeat because Kate is looking absolutely INCREDIBLE, I just realize I have more work to do. I thought a...

No, I'm not about to do a product review for Twisted Honey BBQ Fritos. (Can you imagine? "A mere 9 grams of fat per handful!") Aaron brought these home two days ago. I'm not sure why but I think it has something to do with football season and the snacks that are apparently inseperable from the sport. mmm. Not sure where the logic is there, this is what I got:"Honey BBQ FRITOS??""What. There was a football game on." Duh. He looks at me as though that explains it all. So I found myself snacking on some of these not-so-tasty twisted morsels. And a couple of hours later, I felt ILL. And thanks to Kery's post the other day, I was starting to feel excited that I felt ill. "Wow!" I thought to myself, "I am actually at the point where I feel really sick when I ingest really salty, highly processed crap! YAY! I mean, I don't eat sugar...very often, and I really try to stay away from white flour...(Ritz don't count), and I never would even dream of eating anything but fruits, veggies, ...

Funeral
2007-08-27 06:04:00
Well, I'm just stopping in to let you know we went to Clay's funeral yesterday and it was so sad, and so amazing and wonderful at the same time. We loved hearing and remembering all of the memories from different parts of his life. I can't even write too much more or else my head will explode from the umpteenth time I have burst into tears over this whole thing. There were over a thousand people in attendance; I personally had no idea how wide his influence was felt. THANK YOU for all of your kindness, comments, prayers, emails, and well-wishes on their behalf. I was overwhelmed at the genuine sympathy from your words. Because we couldn't find anywhere to donate online for their family, we have set up an account for them through Paypal. Although we originally set this up for long-distance friends of the Barnes', I thought I'd put it up here too. For those who'd like to donate you can find the link under the ads. Be back soon with typical silliness and fluff. And although it w...

Not the Usual Weigh-In
2007-08-24 03:16:00
I lost weight this week. But it was not a good week. I don't remember anything I ate, I don't even remember even having an appetite (stop the presses!) and I went to the gym ONE time this week. So what was behind this freakish week?Well, to understand we'll need to back up a bit. When Aaron was in graduate school we lived in student family housing; we made a ton of friends in this very close-knit community. One of my favorite memories living there was just going outside in the evenings and hanging out with all of our neighbors. No one had private yards. Anyway, one of these families we hung out with frequently and grew to absolutely adore was the Barnes family. And so followed the playdates, preschools, birthday parties, etc. We have since graduated and scattered along with all of the other young student families and couples who lived in that complex. We still lived in close proximity to the Barnes and would see each other on a regular basis with school dropoffs. However, it se...

I Don't Trust My Eyes
2007-08-22 05:56:00
They're shifty. Their feedback is too often intercepted by corrupt brain signals. Why is it that sometimes it actually takes a photo of ourselves to see what we really look like? What's up with mirrors people? How many times have you heard this, "What really made me decide to lose weight was when I saw that picture of myself..." or "I didn't realize how much weight I had lost until I saw myself unexpectedly in the reflection of a store window..." Is it the fact that your brain doesn't have enough response time to tell you what you "should" see in these cases?I am sure that oodles of scientific evidence deals with ways we actually view ourselves, I am just too lazy to go look it up for you. Instead I will just make the blanket statement that my perception (and I'm guessing I'm not alone) is whack-a-doo.I remember one semester in the dorms which I can clearly blame on an, albeit unintentionally, well-placed mirror for my faulty perception. Let's just say I thought I looked thin ...

We Said Goodbye to Our T.V.!
2007-08-21 16:41:00
I did something this summer about a month ago and it truly has been great for our family. (I'm posting on this subject because it has given us an opportunity to exercise as a family). I pulled the plug on the T.V. Now I love my "Dancing with the Stars, American Idol" and so forth. But for our family, we sort of lost control. So I disconnected the T.V. in the back. I tried to call the cable company but for them to disconnect the T.V. wouldn't save us a penny since we are on some bundle package. The great thing is the very next day, a man cut our cable line in the back of our home when he was trenching our yard. We went without a T.V., phone and Internet for a week. So, when the internet and phone came back on, my kids have just reasoned within their own heads that the cable guy never fixed the T.V. (heheheh...)What have we turned to? Taking walks as a family! It seems like every evening we just want to get out. So we walk. My kids love it. Sometimes they ride their bikes but somet...

Sister Pudge (Molly's Friday Weigh-In)
2007-08-20 19:45:00
2.5! I wish I could just post those numbers and not the + that goes in front of it...I think I'm going to do a spin-off of Sister Skinny called Sister Pudge. Augh! (Don't worry-I'm not crying over this - I mean at midnight I ate a brownie and Kate, politely reminded me it was weigh-in tomorrow. Hey, I've gained some weight back since my cruise BUT for the most part I'm still fitting into my clothes. Just a little tighter. I've also noticed I've lost definition. Now for me, that is the bigger bummer than the weight gain. Also, I would just like to comment about Amy going to the gym. Good for her for trying that hard class! I do believe though our sister has a deeper appreciation for what we go through at the gym. I personally can't wait to introduce her to Mr. Satan Machine!

So we're putting ads up on Sister Skinny, or Sellin' Out to the Man (as Professor Schneebly would say). And I suppose some of you may now assume that we will now be "professional." Are you worried our content is going to be different? (Are you hoping our content will be different?) Maybe you think we'll start putting those commas and semi-colons in the right places. I am here to assure you that you needn't fear! We will continue in our poor grammatical ways for as long as we're blogging! Rest assured, we will remain the amateur bloggers we have always been.So if you've got beef with us for our marketability, send us an email; we will carefully read it and then let out a little snort right before hitting "delete."We had considered putting ads up before but weren't really excited about having flashing pink ads asking you to enter your name to calculate the name of you future soul mate. So when the Blogher Network invited us to be a member (and by "invited," I mean we applied a...

Weigh in and Other Goodies
2007-08-17 17:01:00
And I'm ecstatic. I had a couple of days this week where I just really didn't want to go to the gym, but went anyway. This week I'm going to try structure my eating a little better and do some interval training (it takes less time and has helped me in the past break through "walls" with my weight loss). So there you go. How'd the racing ladies do? Anyone have good news to report? Now onto the goodies:I'm a sap. I almost cried when I watched this teaser. Can't Wait! Also, Jessica's Wednesday post over at Weigh t of My World was fantastic. You may as well go read the entire post, "Motivational Musings;" it's full of wisdom and motivational medicine. But I still wanted to include two of my favorite parts here:6) Food and exercise: find what works for you. Not a morning person? Fine -- exercise over you lunch hour or after work, or even at 8 PM! Can't get off the sofa after work? Get up 30 minute early and go for a brisk walk. Don't like running? Walk. Don't like walking? Bike. D...

Quick! Look Presentable!
2007-08-16 15:38:00
We've got a guest author on Sister Skinny today!Molly and I have had a great time with another one of our sisters who has been vacationing around our neck of the woods lately: the lovely Amy. What. Didja think there were only two of us? Molly and I are a mere sampling of the Sister Club. Here's the proof: This is a picture of all of us at the baby sister's wedding in 2004. From Left to Right: Molly, Emily, Bethany, Amy and Katie. (and sorry for the weird dark circles in the pupils, red-eye reduction doesn't work so well on low res. photos). So, as I was saying, Amy has been vacationing out here and we both thought it would be superfun to get some workouts in together. That's all I'm gonna say...Enjoy!Amy: I am visiting Katie and Molly and thought that I’d love to go work out with them. So this past Saturday Katie suggested we go to a “spin” class at their gym. She explained that it was a cycling class. “Biking,” I thought, “no problem.” After all, I do jog t...

Hold On Tight
2007-08-15 15:50:00
We're going into my head. Just so you all know, this is one of the images I see when I'm working out really hard: I know, butter on a frying pan- it's weird. Let me explain. When I am really in the zone and working out hard (struggling to breathe, sweating like crazy) I start to think of my body as a frying pan. I imagine the butter as my extra fat and every time it gets close to my inner "machines" it gets so hot it starts sizzling and smoking just before it evaporates. So even if I only burn 3 or 4 drops of fat, those are drops that are now not on my body. For all of you literal and/or scientific readers out there, forgive my gross oversimplification of the metabolic process. But it really helps me somedays to just keep pushing when I don't want to. Other days Bob Harper is standing next to Satan, "Katie, think about it. Think about why you want this. You CAN'T quite now! I won't let you!! We're best friends remember?" I can't be the only one out there who has an active ...

Hey all of you that love Fiber One Bars! (Any of you living in a 10 mile radius of me know that it is my FAVE because your grocery store shelf is always empty...hehehehhh) GREAT NEWS!!! I was walking in Costco checking out all of the samples (with my children of course) and I stumbled upon - YES - The moment has come - BULK Fiber One Bars! Usually, I pay $3.19 for one box which puts it to .53$ a bar. I nearly chop off my children's fingers when they go grab for one. Now, $9.95 for 30. 30! That is $.33 a bar! I am going to be so regular (for any of you that don't realize it, there is 140 caloris, 4 fat grams and 9 fiber!).

Chunky Dunkin!
2007-08-11 19:05:00
.8 GAIN! I'm jumping for joy!! .8 is great! For the week that I've had with relatives staying with us, this is a miracle. I'm sorry, but it is so hard for me to be in the groove when I'm not in my normal routine. I'll try better on August 21st (my company leaves). Don't you LOVE this sign? It just makes me giggle. All summer as I've been swimming with my kids I really haven't even been as self conscious as I usually am. It's probably because I am trying to lose weight. Really-that's all it takes for my self esteem. Just to know that I'm TRYING. Call me crazy but you can actually feel skinnier when you TRY! A family member saw this sign (who is naturally skinny) and said to me, "what does THAT mean?" without a smile on her face. I immediately thought she is missing out on an aspect of my life that I find a lot of humor in. How would that be to NOT get the sign???!

What a great font. Is it a plus? Is it a minus? It is .3, who really cares? But just in case you do it's a +.And since it's that totm, I am choosing to blame my lack of a loss on that. Never mind the 18 large bites of cookie dough I ate on Wednesday night. Raw cookie dough is one of the big weaknesses for me. My brain doesn't seem to make the connection that eating a large "dough ball" is pretty much the same thing as eating an entire cookie. And eating 18 large dough balls and the batch mysteriously makes two dozen, not three dozen like the recipe says. But as I said, who needs to admit such behavior when it's that totm? Also, my son has the stomach flu and I found myself at the grocery store the other night getting some easily digestible foods and drinks for him. (Isn't ginger good for calming upset stomachs?) Ok. gingersnaps. check. After several cookies, crackers, and carbonated drinks later, I felt this nagging feeling, "Stomach flu in the house Katie. It's o.k. to eat li...

We Heart Pears
2007-08-09 14:51:00
But we are especially fond of one pear in particular, our friend Healthy Pear. She's one of those "losers" who is now in maintenance mode. That's right people, she's actually reached her goal weight. So we thought we'd ask her what everyone is wondering, "How'd you do it"? If you are, or have ever been discouraged in your weight loss journey, READ ON!1. You have recently reached "lifetime" status at WW. What exactly does that mean and how long did it take you to get there?Lifetime status at WW means that you have reached your goal weight and maintained it (+/- 2 lbs.) for six weeks. After that, it's all about maintaining that weight. You also are only required to "weigh in" once a month. However, I recommend to still attend meetings and weigh in weekly just until you're comfortable in the maintenance mode.In order to reach lifetime it took me about 11 years. (ELEVEN years people!) I started WW in my early twenties and I struggled with the same 20 lbs. or so all through th...

STRESS - How Do YOU Handle IT?
2007-08-08 16:27:00
I'm realizing slowly but surely that for me, the whole game of losing weight isn't about when you are in the "groove", it's when you are hit with the stresses of life and how you handle them. I'm not talking about the normal day to day stresses of life. I'm talking about the kind that make you lose sleep every night. When you can't concentrate on things because you are so worried about something, etc. When I am in my "groove", nothing can stop me. You can put as many homemade cookies in front of me and it won't matter - I'm in the "groove". But I think everyone is like that. Where my weakness lies is when the big stresses hit me head on in my life. I'm realizing I don't have good "coping" mechanisms in place - just food. For instance, I am in the process of deciding to move my store and relocating it. Just the thought of it makes me sick to my stomach because of all the work involved and signing a 5 year lease. We are also in the process of trying to sell our home. The hou...

Incredible Day !
2007-08-06 21:07:00
This post has nothing to do with weight loss. I take that back - I tell people that I'm trying to lose my baby weight. I did not gain my baby weight the normal way that other women do. I gained mine from the wacky fertility drugs. After 8 artificial inseminations and 2 invitros and a ton of money and 30 lbs later, we realized that I just couldn't have any more children coming through me. In January, we adopted the cutest little girl and we named her Andie. So, these 30 lbs are from taking all of these drugs - not carrying a baby. Regardless, they have to come off!Today was our big day! Ande is Ours! We went to the court and appeared before the judge. When our attorney asked me the question under oath about how was Andie doing in our home, I just got all choked up. How is she doing???!! She has turned our family upside down in the most wonderful way! We love her so much. So, I'm on cloud nine today. Now you know where these last 30 lbs came from - the most worth it pounds I've e...

Mixing it Up
2007-08-06 14:37:00
I did something on Saturday that I have never done before. I went mall-walking. Fannypack and all. HA! No, just kidding...about the fannypack part. I really did go to the mall before the stores opened and walked the circuit a million times. Now I knew I would have a good time; I went with a friend I haven't seen in awhile. We talked so much that the entire workout actually felt about 15 minutes long. I didn't expect very much as far as a heart-pumping cardio workout, and well, Satan it wasn't. But I also didn't expect to be sweaty by the end, which I was. I actually felt great when we were done; I'll go again for sure. I also felt very young and hip due to the fact the we were at least 40 years younger than everyone else working out that morning. Did you know there was a mall walking championship? Details can be found at Go Mall Walking. I've posted before on different workouts I love. I think it's important to mix it up, try new things, surprise your body and muscles a lit...

Weigh in and Random Inedible Treats
2007-08-03 14:40:00
Molly: First of all - .6 loss! That is great considering I was away from home. My goal for last week was to go to the gym. At the last minute, my family went to Vegas for a buying show (I own a home decor & furniture store). I walked for two days straight. The day we drove home, my son got the stomach flu so I have been up at night with him and then my baby. So, I did not go to the gym yesterday or today. I'm just lucky to have my eyes open. I'm going to try to get back on the Weigh t Watchers plan starting on Sunday. I just need to get back on the program. It's so hard when you travel or are staying at someone else's home with their food. I actually packed my fiber One bars which I thought was a victory for me. I just can't wait until my life gets back to normal.Katie: Well, in light of my wretched eating yesterday, (although I didn't OVEReat- I just didn't very healthily, "Mmm, fruit tart for breakfast...cookies for lunch? Sure!"), I'm thrilled with .5. I'd like to take ...

This Time It's For Real
2007-08-02 15:16:00
Glory be and Hallelujah. It's happened. I'm not sure when exactly, (like maybe in the middle of the night on Tuesday, or Monday afternoon), but as of today I AM AN 8! You might want to go read this post if you'd like some background on the pair of jeans I'm about to show you:These are the same pair. I can breath. I can walk. No acrobatics required to shimmy into them anymore. I picked them up a couple of days ago, put them on, and thought they were the tens. But then I realized they had the tag on (I kept it on because I was so excited I actually owned a pair of 8's). Cautious, but extremely excited, I went to the mall last night just to make sure I wasn't hallucinating. Aaron stayed home and made cookies with the boys, a win-win-win situation. I've been wearing them comfortably for a couple of days now, but didn't want to post on my victory until I had some evidence. Anyway, I started at the Gap and pranced from store to store (skipping the junior-ish ones mind you, 5-7-9, ...

Aaron, Puzzled: "You Don't Want...Any?"
2007-08-01 14:24:00
An odd thing happened last night. Very odd.Aaron , for those of you who don't know, loves to bake. If this were a recipe blog for fancy desserts, I'd be able to post yummy pictures and recipes for eons. But alas, it's not. So anyway, last night he made this lovely fruit tart (sincerest apologies if any readers have been fighting off fruit tart cravings for months):And the strangest thing happened in my brain. It said, "Katie, I don't think you wan't any of that."Me: "Really?"Brain: "Well, are you hungry?"Me: "Um, no."Brain: "Are you having a die-hard craving for a fruit tart tonight?"Me: "Nooo." (I could start to see the logic...)Brain: "Then it's settled. Just don't have any, or, just a bite to let Aaron know how yummy it is"Me: "Okay."I had a bite. One small bite, that's it.It felt odd. Really. Here was this delicious just-out-of-the-oven confection and - I'm sorry, can we review - I actually felt like I didn't really want it? No willpower, no deprivation, just no desire....
Resisting It?
2007-07-31 15:05:00
One of my favorite feelings is the sore I feel the day after a great weights class.Today's post is a reminder for those of us who do, and hopefully a little push for those who don't, to lift! (and by "lift" I mean weights, resistance bands, pilates, whatever you do to fatigue those muscles).First things first: Two fantastic sources for why you need to start doing something TODAY. And if you're a die-hard lifter you still might want to check them out. Krista (#1) is one of my favorite people and (#2) has a really extensive group of articles on why women should use weights for weight loss.1) Stumptuous, and2) Changing ShapeI was browsing Sparkpeople this morning when I came across these great little exercise demonstrations. It's divided up into upper and lower body and core sections. I like these because most of them you are so simple you could start building strength immediately. You can go to any sporting goods store you'll find a set of 5, 8 or 10 lb. free weights are reeeeal...
Want to Lose 5 Pounds in 3 Seconds?
2007-07-30 15:10:00
Then stand up straight!Awhile ago, when I was doing yoga on a regular basis, I started to realize the importance of good posture. Yoga definitely increased my awareness and help my posture a great deal. However, I don't do it regularily anymore (mostly because I'm obsessed with a certain yoga master who isn't teaching at my gym anymore), and have caught myself in random mirrors a couple of times looking like a hunchback. I tried to take a "bad posture," "good posture" pictures to demonstrate that you really do look different. (But even my "good posture" picture doesn't change the fact I have no makeup on and toothpaste on my sleeve- sorry). I have two REALLY simple ways to try to correct my slouching:1) Roll my shoulders back slightly. 2) Imagine a string hanging straight through the top of my head to the bottom of spineThat's it, or at least, what works for me. My two greatest obstacles would be actually REMEMBERING to do these things all the time. I also am guilty of sticking...

Molly: I'll take it! I'm not going to say how much I've gained on vacation, but let's just concentrate on the positive - .8! My goal for next week is to get my body to the gym. Wow-it's amazing how fast you can get out of the habit. It's not that before I didn't want to go, I just wasn't near the gym. Now that I'm near, I'm having a hard time waking up. So, we're starting again with the Satan machine!Katie:Does it feel like we're going in slow motion to anyone else? I'm not complaining though, I'll take any loss! And now for the (hoorah for made up words!) Randomnimity :-- THANK YOU for all of those fantastic snack ideas, they made a huge difference this week. I hadn't realized how off-track I had gotten. I had been making PB+J sandwiches or grabbing graham crackers or pretzels which didn't ever fill me up.
