STUDY RAISES CONCERNS ABOUT ANEMIA DRUGS
2008-03-10 12:58:00 Increased risk of blood clots in the legs and lungsA new study has raised concerns about a class of drugs known as erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs), widely taken by cancer patients. Researchers say the drugs are associated with an increased risk of blood clots in the deep veins of the legs or in the lungs, leading to death among patients with cancer. The findings are published in the February 27 issue of JAMA.The ESAs erythropoietin and darbepoetin are widely used to treat anemia in patients with cancer. Some studies have indicated that there may be a higher risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) with these medications, but it has not been known if there is an associated increased risk of death, according to background information in the article.Charles L. Bennett, M.D., Ph.D., of the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, and colleagues examined the rate of VTE and death associated with ESA administration for treatment of anemia among patients with cance... TELEVISION HAS BIGGEST EFFECT ON DAYLIGHT TIME ADJUSTMENT
2008-03-08 14:50:00 Where you live helps determine your sleep scheduleResearch on the effects of 'spring ahead' across the country shows that television, not the sun, determines sleep schedule. Most of the nation is once again readying itself for losing an hour of sleep with the arrival of Daylight Saving Time . This is a “shock” not only to those of us who value our sleep, but also (very temporarily) to all levels of the economy, from the individual to the world. In a forthcoming article for the Journal of Labor Economics, researchers look at the brief fight between American’s natural timing cues -- the circadian rhythms determined by the sun -- and the man-made cues brought on within the last century, mainly by the creation of time zones and the television broadcast schedule. In this relatively brief time, they find, the markers for how we structure our day have been dramatically altered. How did these man-made cues come about? Daylight Saving Time has its roots in the Standard Time Act of 1918; t... More About: Television , Effect , Adjustment

SENATE PASSES TOUGH NEW CONSUMER SAFETY BILL
2008-03-07 05:08:00 Lobbyists wage fierce behind-the-scenes battle to weaken measureThe Senate today passed the strongest consumer safety legislation since the creation of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in 1972.The bill, which passed by a vote of 79-13, overhauls the CPSC and its guiding document, the Consumer Product Safety Act.The CPSC Reform Act would gradually increase the agency's funding to $155.9 million by 2015 and includes many clauses that would make it harder for companies to get away with making dangerous products. The agency was slated to have a $63 million budget this year, but Congress bumped that up to $80 million.A similar bill unanimously passed the House of Representatives in December, but is considered by many consumer advocates to be inadequate compared to the Senate version, written by Sen. Mark Pryor (D-Ark.).The most notable difference is that the House version only provides $100 million by 2011 for the agency, which dropped from 480 to 420 full-time employees un... TESTS FIND TOXIC CHEMICALS IN FURNITURE
2008-03-05 12:38:00 Toxins found in most Americans; highest levels in children(ABOVE PHOTO NOT CONNECTED TO THIS STORY)A high percentage of California furniture contains toxic chemicals that have been linked to cancer, birth defects, hormone disruption, and reproductive and neurological dysfunction, a study finds. These toxins are particularly dangerous to infants and children. The study, “Killer Couches,” was conducted by Friends of the Earth, an environmental group. It tested a sample of 350 pieces of household furniture in stores and domestic residences and found that most of the furniture had high levels of toxic halogenated fire retardants. This analysis suggests that product contamination is widespread in California, exposing the state’s population to a significant and unnecessary risk.Friends of the Earth is co-sponsoring a bill in California's General Assembly (AB706-Leno) that will mandate the phase-out of halogenated fire retardants in all residential furniture products, while promoting ... LESS SALT, FEWER SOFT DRINKS?
2008-03-05 06:09:00 Reducing kids' salt intake could help them cut back on sugary sodasChildren who eat less salt drink fewer sugar-sweetened soft drinks and may significantly lower their risks for obesity, elevated blood pressure and later-in-life heart attack and stroke, researchers reported in Hypertension: Journal of the American Heart Association.Previous studies have shown that dietary salt intake increases fluid consumption in adults. But researchers at St. George’s University of London, England, are the first to examine whether the same is true in children.“Sugar-sweetened soft drinks are a significant source of calorie intake in children,” said Feng J. He, M.D., lead author of the study. “It has been shown that sugar-sweetened soft drink consumption is related to obesity in young people. SAFETY OF MULTIVITAMINS QUESTIONED
2008-03-04 17:46:00 High levels of folic acid may be harmfulThe use of some vitamin supplements can be controversial, with scientists and manufacturers arguing over their usefulness. But they don't spend much time arguing about the lowly and somewhat boring multivitamin. No one has ever argued that multivitamins might not be good for you. Until now.The Harvard Men's Health Watch, which once endorsed these popular supplements, now says that a reappraisal of that advice is in order. The publication, in its March 2008 issue, notes that some recent studies have linked multivitamin use to prostate cancer. More convincingly, it says studies have linked high intakes of folic acid to colon polyps, the precursors of colorectal cancer.Researchers speculate that high intakes of folic acid, which was first added to grain products in the 1990s, may have contributed to an increase in colorectal cancers in the mid-1990s.Link to complete story: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/200 8/03/multivitamins.html~Sandy G. STUDY SUGGESTS CELL PHONE-SALIVARY GLAND CANCER LINK
2008-03-04 01:52:00 First study to look at long-term cell phone usersIt's the question that won't go away. Does heavy cell phone use increase the risk of cancer? A new study, appearing in the American Journal of Epidemiology, suggests that it does. The latest study found focused on cancer of the salivary gland, looking at 500 Israeli citizens who had developed the disease and 1,300 healthy subjects.Researchers concluded that those who had held a mobile handset against one side of their head for several hours a day were 50 percent more likely to have a tumor in the salivary gland.Since cell phones were introduced in the 1980s, there has been speculation of a heightened risk of cancer, caused by holding an electronic device against the head. There have been a number of studies, but no conclusive evidence one way or the other. This latest study is different because it has focused on long-term users. Also, researchers say, previous studies have looked for tumor formation exclusively in the brain, not other... More About: Phone , Cancer , Study , Cell Phone , Cell
23 MILLION TV SETS MAY GO DARK IN DTV SWITCHOVER
2008-03-04 01:38:00 Midwest and West may be hardest hitIf the government and electronics industry don't work harder to educate consumers about the impending switchover from analog television signals to digital on February 17, 2009, 11 percent of American households, or 23 million people, may not have any television service at all after the transition. That's the conclusion of a new report by Consumers' Union, which studied the different regions that will be affected by the DTV transition, as well as the results of efforts to educate consumers about the switch.According to the consumer group, Western and Midwest states such as Texas and California will be hit especially hard by the switchover, as they have large population groups that are reliant on over-the-air television signals via "rabbit ear" antennae.Link to complete story: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/200 8/02/dtv_switchover.html~Sandy G. 2008-03-01 23:26:00 Gorton's Inc. recalled about 1,000 cases of frozen fish in 10 states on Friday after confirming items a Pennsylvania woman reported finding in her food were pills. Gorton's voluntarily recalled the product as a precaution while a laboratory conducts further tests to determine the nature of the pills. The results are expected early next week."Obviously, product alteration is a very serious matter," said Jud Reis, vice president of marketing for the Gloucester, Mass.-based company. "We are conducting a full investigation into the source of the problem."Tracy Rowan, of New Freedom, called police after she bit into one of the pills Sunday about the same time her daughter realized one was in her fish, too. On Friday, Reis said the material was some sort of pill, not compressed batter or bread crumbs as suspected."It's kind of frightening to not only find something in your mouth, a foreign object," Rowan said Friday. CATARACT SURGERY OPTIONS CAN ELIMINATE BIFOCALS
2008-02-27 13:56:00 New implantable lenses let patients see near, far and in betweenThere's good news for the millions of bifocal-wearing baby boomers and seniors who will eventually need cataract surgery. New types of implantable lenses are now available that allow cataract patients to see near, far, and in between without wearing glasses or contact lenses. Here’s what you should know.Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most successful surgical procedures that has recently gotten better. In a typical cataract surgery, a patient’s aging and cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL) to restore the eye’s focusing power.Until recently, the only option was a fixed-focus lens, typically designed for faraway distances, which left the patient needing bifocals or reading glasses to see up close. But now, there are new multifocal and accommodating lenses that can restore sight at all distances so patients can go glasses-free.New lensesThe new lenses – all FDA appro... GLUCOSAMINE DOESN'T WORK, STUDY FINDS
2008-02-24 12:44:00 Popular arthritis treatment has no apparent effectIf you're taking glucosamine sulfate to treat arthritis in your hip, save your money. It doesn't work, according to researchers writing in the February 19 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine.People in middle to old age have long taken the dietary supplement in the belief it would ease pain and inflammation in joints. Dr. Rianne M. Rozendaal at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, headed the research team that concluded the supplement was mostly ineffective as a means to treat hip pain. The study followed more than 200 patients for two years. All were suffering osteoarthritis of the hip. Half the people in the study took 1,500 milligrames of Glucosamine once a day, the others took placebo. The researchers said glucosamine sulfate had no apparent effect on hip arthritis. Those with very mild arthritis noted some slight improvement when taking the glucosamine, but the improvement was very small."The differences... More About: Study , Work
