TSA SITE LEFT PASSENGER DATA EXPOSED TO ID THEFT
2008-01-22 13:39:00
Poor design, inadequate oversight, led to information breachIt's a turn of events that Franz Kafka would have to admire.A site designed for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to help airline passengers remove their names from terrorist watch lists was so poorly constructed and lacking security that users of the site may be at risk for identity theft.House Democrat Henry Waxman (D-CA), chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, blasted the TSA and a small Virginia Web services company called Desyne for launching a Web site that "violated basic operating standards of web security and failed to protect travelers' sensitive personal information."The 12-page report from Waxman's office found that "these security breaches can be traced to TSA's poor acquisition practices, conflicts of interest, and inadequate oversight."According to the report, the "Traveler Redress" Website was farmed out to Desyne in a no-bid contract with no other competition. TAX BREAKS FOR FAMILY CAREGIVERS
2008-01-22 13:26:00
Elderly parents may qualify as dependentsIf you’re supporting an elderly parent, you may qualify for some tax relief – if you pass Uncle Sam’s tax test. Here’s what you should know.If you’re supporting your elderly mother (or father), to get a tax deduction, you’ll need to claim her or him as a dependent on your tax return. For the 2007 tax year, claiming an additional personal exemption would reduce your taxable income by $3,400. But to get this tax break, you’ll need to pass two tests:• Income test: To qualify as a dependent, your parent’s 2007 income must be less than $3,400. Her income from Social Security does not count towards that total (disability payments don’t count either). But if your parent receives more than $3,400 from other sources, such as pension benefits, interest and dividends from investments, or withdrawals from retirement savings plans, you can’t claim him or her as a dependent. • Support test: In addition to the income test, you must p...

GREEN BEAN, GARBANZO BEAN RECALL EXPANDED
2008-01-22 13:13:00
Botulism risk in New Era beans canned over the last five yearsConcern about possible botulism poisoning has prompted New Era Canning Company, New Era, Mich., to expand its product recall to all canned green beans and garbanzo beans distributed by the company nationwide over the last five years.Clostridium botulinum, also called C. botulinum, can cause botulism, a serious and sometimes life-threatening condition. The affected cans are large institutional-sized containers, weighing approximately six and a half pounds. The Food and Drug Administration initiated the inspection at New Era, along with inspections of other low-acid canned food (LACF) manufacturers, following four cases of botulism in consumers who had eaten canned hot dog chili sauce in the summer of 2007.Symptoms of botulism poisoning can begin from 6 hours to 2 weeks after eating food that contains the toxin. Symptoms may include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and m...

KEEPING TEENS SAFE ONLINE
2008-01-22 12:56:00
Navigating the treacherous streets of MySpaceThere is one thing about being a teen that every generation experiences. A teen must have a place to hang out, a place to meet and socialize with friends. For some of us it might have been the malt shop, for others the mall. For today's teen, it's the Internet, especially MySpace, Facebook and other networking sites. These sites generally offer an excellent way for teens to keep up with their friends while making new friends along with the way.MySpace has grown to be the behemoth of the social networking websites, thanks in part to its openness that allows teens to be, well, open. But it's this openness that has created a headache for parents, teachers, teens, while raising serious issues of privacy and safety.Trying to restore its good name -- and to relieve mounting legal pressure from 49 states and the District of Columbia -- MySpace recently agreed to implement new measures to protect young users from sexual predators. Earlier MySpac...

Sears, Kmart Recall Play StovesSears and Kmart are recalling about 17,000 'My First Kenmore' play stoves because of a tip-over hazard.A metal bracket connecting the door to the stove can cause a tip-over when the door is opened. This poses a risk of injury to young children.Sears has received one report of the product tipping over, resulting in bruises to a child. The self-assembled, wooden play stove is painted pink with six white knobs and a timer. The dimensions of the stove when assembled are 11 1/2' W x 13 3/4' D x 32 7/8' H.The stoves, made in Taiwan, were sold at Sears and Kmart stores nationwide from September 2007 through November 2007 for about $100.Consumers should immediately remove and discard the bracket that connects the door to the stove to eliminate the hazard. Consumers may obtain updated assembly instructions by contacting Sears/Kmart or by visiting either firm's Web site. Broadband Internet In The BoondocksQ. I live in rural Ohio, and I am trying to find a broadband provider. I have dial-up service, and I commonly connect at 22 to 36 Kbps. The nearest cable provider says that they would have to run 1.5 miles of cable to reach my house (which would cost $25,000). Obviously, that will not be an option. Also, the phone company does not offer DSL. I considered cellular Internet service, but I have to go outside to get adequate reception on my cell phone. I would be concerned about constant dropped service on the computer. I have considered satellite Internet service, but I have heard that it is unreliable. I know the speeds are slower than traditional broadband, but it is still many times faster than my usual speed of 36 Kbps. Do you have any recommendations?A. Broadband Internet access is growing fast. However, rural areas often lack cable or DSL service. Metropolitan areas attract most of broadband providers' investments. Cellular Internet offers more...
APPLE'S FIRST SECURITY PATCHES OF 2008 FIX IPHONE, QUICKTIME
2008-01-20 12:42:00
The security update fixes critical flaws in QuickTime and the Safari browser, and, as with other updates, the iPhone patches will disable handhelds with Jailbreak installedAs with previous updates, the iPhone 1.1.3 software patch sent those who had installed the unauthorized Jailbreak software -- used to run third-party applications on the iPhone -- scrambling to get their phones up and running. That's because Apple's updates have so far always rendered Jailbreak unusable, forcing users to go through a complex re-installation process.According to the Unofficial Apple Weblog, it is possible to run third-party software following this latest update, but the process is complex. A simpler Jailbreak 1.1.3 script is expected to be posted eventually at the iPhone Wiki, which is the hub of much iPhone hacking.Link to complete story: http://www.infoworld.com/article/08/01/15 /Apples-first-security-patches-of-2008 -fi x-iPhone-QuickTime_1.html~Sandy G.

FDA TO ALLOW CLONED ANIMALS IN FOOD CHAIN
2008-01-20 12:25:00
Agency finds no reason not to eat cloned crittersAfter years of study, the Food and Drug Administration says it sees no reason cloned livestock and their offspring cannot be used for food. The ruling comes in spite of opposition from some consumer groups and concerns by the food industry. The decision was not unexpected, as the agency had telegraphed its intentions as it completed work on the seven-year study.According to a summary of the final report posted on the FDA Web site, the government is not advocating or requiring any special labeling for products from cloned animals. Left unclear is when a voluntary moratorium on the use of cloned animals will be lifted.More than 30,000 people – ranging from consumers to industry trade organizations -- filed comments with the FDA on the proposed lifting of the moratorium. Many lawmakers also expressed reservations, with Congress passing a measure urging the FDA to carry out more studies before making its decision. The agency, apparently, ...

HIGH HEART ATTACK, STROKE RISK IN ASPIRIN-RESISTANT PATIENTS
2008-01-19 17:03:00
Study quantifies risk of being sensitive to aspirinBeing resistant to aspirin makes patients four times more likely to suffer a heart attack, stroke or even die from a pre-existing heart condition, according to a study published on bmj.com, the Web site of the British Medical Journal. The study relates to patients who are prescribed aspirin long-term as a way of preventing clots from forming in the blood.Patients who are labeled “aspirin resistant” have blood cells (platelets) that are not affected in the same way as those of patients who are responsive to the drug, i.e. people who are “aspirin sensitive.”There is currently no agreed method of accurately determining who is and isn’t aspirin resistant and the reasons why someone might be aspirin resistant are currently a cause of controversy.Relatively few studies have looked at whether aspirin resistance has any impact on clinical outcome so the Canadian authors carried out a review of all the available data to better under...

PARENTS WARNED CAMPHOR CAN BE TOXIC TO CHILDREN
2008-01-19 16:47:00
Camphor not approved for use as cold remedyThe New York City Health Department is warning parents and caregivers to keep products containing camphor away from children. Some camphor products can be toxic to children when accidentally ingested or excessively applied to the skin.Three recent cases of seizures associated with camphor have been confirmed in the Bronx, the department said. All three children have recovered. Seven additional cases are being investigated.Camphor -- "alcanfor" in Spanish -- is a common ingredient in many products used for colds, pest control, to ward off illness, or as air freshener. The New York City warning comes as the FDA is again warning parents about the dangers of over-the-counter cough and cold remedies.Link to complete story: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/200 8/01/nyc_camphor.html~Sandy G.

RESEARCHERS ACCUSE PHARMAS OF 'DISEASE MONGERING'
2008-01-19 16:36:00
Drugs for 'pre-osteoporosis' unnecessary and potentially harmful, researchers chargePharmaceutical companies push a number of drugs to treat pre-osteoporosis or "osteopenia," but are they really necessary?New research published in the British Medical Journal suggests millions of low risk women are being encouraged to seek treatment and take drugs they don't need. The authors don't mince words, calling it "a classic case of disease-mongering: a risk factor being transformed into a medical disease in order to sell tests and drugs to relatively healthy people."Osteopenia or "pre-osteoporosis" is said to affect around half of all older women and, in at least one country, drug companies have already begun to market their drugs to women with osteopenia, based on re-analyses of four osteoporosis drug trials. But the authors, led by Pablo Alonso-Coello of Hospital de Sant Pau in Barcelona, argue the move raises serious questions about the benefit-risk ratio for low risk individuals, and a...

FDA WARNS OF COUGH, COLD MEDICINE RISK TO CHILDREN
2008-01-19 16:20:00
Warning doesn't go far enough, Public Citizen chargesThis just in – the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued an advisory on cough and cold products for children, three months after the drug manufacturers themselves warned the products might be harmful to children under age two.In a Public Health Advisory for parents and caregivers, the agency recommends that over-the-counter cough and cold products should not be used to treat infants and children less than 2 years of age because serious and potentially life-threatening side effects can occur. Most U.S. pharmacies began to remove those products after the drug company's warning, issued on October 12, 2007. However, the recall was voluntary and not all of the products were immediately removed. The consumer organization Public Citizen said the FDA's warning is not only late but inadequate."By simply warning parents not to administer over-the-counter cough and cold remedies to children under the age of two, the FDA has failed ...

FORD FIRE HAZARD RECALL CREEPS ALONG
2008-01-19 15:51:00
Parts shortages delay repairs of fire-prone Ford sMore than 1.8 million Ford Motor Co. cars and trucks remain at risk of erupting into flames 5 months after the automaker recalled an additional 3.6 million vehicles because of a fire hazard in the cruise control system.Ford initially promised parts would be available for the massive recall to repair the vehicles by October 2007. The automaker then said the parts will not be available until later in 2007.When Ford first announced the delay because of a parts shortage, the automaker said there have been no supply problems for parts for SUVs. That is no longer true. The badly needed parts are still in short supply and discouraging some Ford truck owners from responding to the recall. Because Ford dealers are unable to accomplish the required repairs, as a temporary fix they disconnect the cruise control system when consumers respond to their notice from Ford.A Ford spokesman insists the automaker is doing all it can to complete the fire h...

NEW MASS HACK STRIKES SITES, CONFOUNDS RESEARCHERS
2008-01-18 13:32:00
A massive hack of legitimate Web sites has been spreading malware to visitors' PCs, using a new tactic that has made detection "extraordinarily difficult," security experts said today.According to the researcher who broke the news, the hack, which involves several hundred sites, may be related to a November 2007 break-in at Fasthosts Internet Ltd., a U.K.-based hosting service that in early December acknowledged that some clients' log-in credentials had been pinched."All of the affected domains either have or have had a relationship in the recent past with Fasthosts," said Mary Landesman, a senior security researcher at ScanSafe Inc. Like the large-scale hack prompted by a series of SQL injection attacks last week, the sites identified by ScanSafe are legitimate URLs, many of them small mom-and-pop e-commerce sites. Among them are a bicycle shop and several tightly focused travel sites, said Landesman. Most, although not all, are businesses located in the U.K.But in almost every o...

STUDY CASTS DOUBT ON CHOLESTEROL DRUG VYTORIN
2008-01-17 15:47:00
Critics claim drug makers delayed releasing bad newsBad news for consumers with high cholesterol levels: A long-delayed study shows the expensive new drug Vytorin had no benefit on the buildup of artery plaque over the older drug Zocor and could even put users at greater risk, even though Vytorin cut bad cholesterol 40% more.Patients on Vytorin actually had more heart attacks, cardiovascular deaths and heart procedures than those who got Zocor, although researchers said the differences were small and could be due to chance. In addition, patients on Vytorin ended the study with slightly more plaque in their arteries, a result that could also be due to chance.Critics were quick to pounce. Sidney Wolfe, M.D., director of Public Citizen’s Health Research Group, said drug makers Merck and Schering-Plough and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) lagged in warning the public about the drugs' risks."We first warned against using Vytorin, a combination of Zetia and the cholesterol d...

RESEARCHERS FIND GENE IMPLICATED IN HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
2008-01-16 12:44:00
Discovery could lead to preventative treatmentsMillions of people have high blood pressure, putting them at increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Some causes may be obvious – obesity, too little exercise, too much sodium in the diet – others not so obvious. Now, scientists say they may have determined why so many seemingly healthy adults struggle with dangerously high blood pressure. They point to a gene that sets off a sequence of events in the blood vessels, eventually making conditions in vessels ripe for the creation of blockages that can cause heart attacks, strokes and circulatory problems. The finding in a study led by Ohio State University researchers might lead to new therapeutic options for high blood pressure, especially hypertension associated with aging. Obesity and aging contribute to increasing cases of high blood pressure, which currently affects an estimated 50 million Americans.Despite more intensive treatments available for hypertension, little has been done...

Usage levels comparable to LSD, survey finds A new federal study shows more than three million adolescents and young adults have used non-prescription cough and cold medicines to get high at least once. That kind of usage is comparable to LSD, and more than the reported use of methamphetamines, among those aged 12 to 25, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).White youths were more than three times as likely as black youths to have misused these drugs during the past year.Overdosing on many cough and cold medications may result in serious life-threatening adverse reactions. Adverse reactions include blurred vision, loss of physical coordination, intense abdominal pain, vomiting, uncontrolled violent muscle spasms, irregular heartbeat, delirium and death. The survey is reportedly the largest of its kind and involves interviewing nearly 67,000 people from around the nation, including almost 45,000 persons aged 12 to 25.Link to complete story:...

AFTERNOON NAP MAY HELP LONG-TERM MEMORY
2008-01-14 16:05:00
Reason for improvement isn't clearA ninety-minute daytime nap helps speed up the process of long term memory consolidation, a recent Israeli study finds. The research, published in the scientific journal Nature Neuroscience, offered no reasons for the memory enhancement."The results of this research suggest the possibility that it is possible to speed up memory consolidation, and in the future, we may be able to do it artificially," said Prof. Avi Karni of the Center for Brain and Behavior Research at the University of Haifa.Long -term memory is defined as a permanent memory that doesn't disappear or that disappears after many years. This part of our memory is divided into two types – memories of things that happened and memories of how to perform certain tasks. In this new research, it was revealed that a daytime nap changes the course of consolidation in the brain.Link to complete story: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/200 8/01/nap_memory.html~Sandy G.

Daily dose may let men be more spontaneousFor men with erectile dysfunction, but who want to be ready whenever opportunity presents itself, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a once-a-day dose of Cialis , the ED drug made by Eli Lilly and Company. The Indianapolis-based pharmaceutical firm says when Cialis for once daily use is taken daily, men can attempt sexual activity at anytime between doses.Currently available in parts of Europe, this low-dose daily treatment option of Cialis may be most appropriate for men with ED who anticipate sexual activity of twice a week or more, the company said. For other men, Cialis taken as needed - the previously approved dosing regimen - may be most appropriate. In clinical trials, when taken without restrictions on the timing of sexual activity, Cialis for once daily use improved erectile function over the course of therapy, according to Lilly.Link to complete story: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/200 8/01/fda_cialis.html~Sand...
